60+ (minimal music for guitar) - Annette Kruisbrink

- I composed 60+ in 1988 and dedicated it to my teacher Pieter van der Staak. The piece has a minimal character. I combined two existing guitar techniques (hammer on/pull off and right hand arpeggios) resulting in a new playing technique and a complexity of rhythms.
It is notated in boxes. Each box contains a separate motif; the playing order must remain intact (as notated), but each motif can be repeated ad libitum. Each motif proceeds to the next without interruption: the total composition (60 boxes + coda) lasts 15-20 minutes. I.e. each box lasts (on average) 15-20 seconds. For this youtube clip however I didnt repeat the motifs as many times as I normally do when I play it for an audience. This is because of the time limit youtube prescribes.
60 + is published by the Dutch publishing company DONEMUS, Amsterdam. Website Annette Kruisbrink: www.annettekrui...
minimalism is quite overlooked on the guitar; this piece is one of the few masterpieces of the guitar in that idiom. This deserves more attention!!
Thank you Greg!
@@annettekruisbrink Great minimalists such as Simeon ten Holt and Louis Andriessen are from the Netherlands. Have you ever had contact with them? It would be interesting to hear their minimalism on the guitar. I am in the process of purchasing the score for this piece. I hope to one day to perform a complete guitar recital full of nothing but minimalist pieces
@@Gguy061 I only met Louis Andriessen once, but of course I am familiar with the music of his and the minimalistic works of ten Holt. Andriessen wrote a solo piece for guitar 'Triplum' but not in minimalistic style.
Another entire minimal piece of mine is called Jimnastics, shorter and less advanced than 60+ but with a similar concept: Patterns are to be played consecutively. Each pattern is repeated several times and proceeds to the next without interruption. The duration of the total workout is up to the performer, although a duration of 6 to 8 minutes would be appropriate.
Jimnastics is published at Les Productions d'OZ.
What a beautiful, otherworldly piece of music! At times it doesn't even sound like a guitar.
Thank you Russell
In an ocean of human souls all having something to say, only a few shine stronger than the others. This piece belongs to one of them.
My most warm greetings from Frankfurt a.M.
When searching around the web looking for an atonal guitar song to play on my electric, to irritate my "I V I" oriented classical guitar teacher, I never thought I would find something so utterly fascinating! The surreal, trance-like, psychedelic feel of this piece is something I've never experienced before. You are truly a unique composer and I am so happy that you are playing your pieces on TH-cam for us. When I get a classical, I am definitely going to try this technique! Thank you!
Most wonderful! Indulging in it for hours on end by having it transferred on a looper. Instantly subbed! Thank you for your inspirational work!
What a nice response Eleni! Thank you very much!
Wow - this is such a fantastic piece…hypnotic dream music…maybe not for everyone but I loved it! I imagine it is not so easy to make this sound as convincing as you do…..what wonderful tones you get…almost sounds like an organ at the very end!
Thank you Mark!
+markmdavis Cheers for the Video clip! Excuse me for chiming in, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you ever tried - Riddleagan Blossoming Solo Remedy (just google it)? It is a smashing exclusive product for mastering guitar scales minus the normal expense. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my friend Sam after a lifetime of fighting got amazing results with it.
awesome... the technique sometimes gives the impression that 6+ voices are playing at a time... really powerful sound. Wonderful!
+8jondo8 Thank you!
Wow! unlike anything I've ever heard. So beautiful.
Till Schulz Thank you!!
Reminds me of Brouwer's Espiral Eternal and Tarantos. And from what I read above about the notation it's notated much like both. Brouwer calls his "Cells".
I am amazed!
Thank you Jaroslav!
It sounds like you re directly tapping into the universe. Beautiful.
Nice playing Nice playing Nice playing Playing nice Playing nice Playing nice...
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you
The way it starts just bobs me in it. I don't know if I expressed well. But I didn't know you could do that just moving your right hand up and down. Congratulations for your playing style madamme
Incredible
Thank you Mark.
Amazing technique. I mostly play electric guitar, and I don't usually play minimalist music, so this is a double whammy of something new and interesting for me. We just finished learning about minimalism in my theory class, and I need to compose a piece (probably for guitar and piano) so thank you for the inspiration!
The way you use hammer ons and pull offs along with your fingerstyle right hand is really cool. I usually use a pick, but I want to experiment with this technique. Instead of fingerstyle, I'll use hybrid picking with the guitar pick and my fingers together with my right hand. It might sound really cool if I can figure out how to get it really consistent like you, and if I can wrap my head around some polyrhythms and stuff.
Very impressive playing. Really cool song.
Thank you for your comment! Lots of success with composing! Greetings from The Netherlands.
WOW!! FANTASTIC!! BRAVISSIMA 👏👏👏
Thank you Marco!
Wonderful! Touching! Thank you!
Thank you Davide!
that was amazing
good vibrations ... thanks
Annette, what a splendid piece this is and how well you do play it! The only other performance I'm aware of at the moment is the one by our dear colleague Jan Bartlema, which is great also. By the way: thank you for your compliments on my playing.
If only music can be hanged on the walls of a contemporary art museum, this would most likely be one of its main piece.
Wow, what a huge compliment! Thank you very much Edmond!
everytime I am nervous I play like this -I`m so happy to find another guitar-player who play like me ( I call this style -dark-empty circulate ... or s.th like this :D) liyubliyu
He Annette. Erg mooi stuk! Een vriend van me dacht dat ik dit wel mooi zou vinden en toen zag ik tot mijn verbazing mijn oude gitaar lerares.
AMAZING work =) and playing
Beautiful.

@FeuermannFilms Thank you very much for this nice comment!
Warmest greetings back from Zwolle.
Thank you Jakob !
harmonics 3:50 and on wow! ❤
Thank you!
Love it!!!
Fantastisch!
This is incredible. the right hand technique really lends itself nicely into these modal patterns, sounds like different brush strokes and changing shades and colours. I also the love timbral modulations moving the the right hand up and down the body. Do you have any sheet music for this? I'd love to learn. Best, Cee
Hi, thank you for your comment. The sheet music (in pdf or hard copy) is published at Donemus Edition (webshop.donemus.com/action/front/sheetmusic/9001) or at www.annettekruisbrink.nl (only hard copy)

L'he posat 8 vegades seguides..
El meu professor és cubà, i, d'alguna manera, potser, alguns passatges i sonoritats d'aquesta peça m'evoquen fragments del " Paisaje cubano con lluvia".
Thank you Frederic. I appreciate your words!
i love it
Thank you!
Arrgh!-l am being pulled in so many directions! l'm learning piano-Glass,Tiersen, Satie, Chopin, bossa nova guitar, lute music of jsBach and now l find this amazing artist whose music l. also want to play l need two more lifetimes just to catch up chords
I am glad you like it!
If there were a "like a lot" button, I would click it.
Interessant, er is niet veel minimal voor gitaar en dit is een goed stuk.
Dank je Christiaan!
wow I love it, but I want minimilst pieces that I am actually capable of playing as this seems really difficult.
Te vez y esuchas hermosa
Gracias
@Valdivia9494 Thank you !!!
Interesting. It reminds me of Steve Reich.... Just a little ;)
@cabezaconorejas Thank you and greetings from The Netherlands.
And if there were a "thanks a lot for your comment" button I would certainly click it too!
Awesome!, don't quite see what minimal about it though...

Oh Well...
Pieter would probably turn around in his grave with a smile of satisfaction if hearing this flow of rhythm.

That's not music, just cacophony .

You should write and sell a classical guitar book of all your pieces.. I'd buy it.
She has many for sale on her website
Whitewater Rafting.
Haunting
Very interesting ,enjoyable, reminiscent of Steve Reich.
Thank you John!
Marry me
Have you done something like this with more consonant of harmonic movement? Not that I don't like this but it'd be a great contrast piece for this one
THIS is pretty cool! I think of Michael Hedges when I think of minimalist guitar pieces. This is really really wild!
Have you ever listened to the band 'Hella'? Some parts of this remind me so much of them.
Hi Logan, No, I have never heard of the band Hella. Thanks for the tip!
I love that piece. I've heard it in Szczawno like 150 years ago :))) AMAZING!
Absolutely amazing! You have a beautiful sound and an equally beautiful soul- thank you for sharing this!
Annette, you make me feel like i was in a building with a lot of rooms. Each chord was a room. Each one better than the last. Each one stranger than the previous. At the same time the change in the resonance was really clever durring the whole song, that gives development. You're great. Greetings from Chile.
Annette, that's some wild sounds! I enjoyed listening. Thank you for posting.
@ricbleu48 Thank you very much for this huge compliment!
I love this; have you done other minimalist pieces for guitar?
Thank you! I wrote minimalist pieces for two guitars (Toccata a due), for double bass and guitar (Cirex) and for stringed instr. and guitar (Jungle Skunk). Best regards, Annette
Thanks for the reply. As a guitarist and composer myself, I love finding stuff like this. I just purchased a copy of 60+ from Donemus, and will be looking up some of the others.
