Objection. Mike and Harvey from suits were judged on their performance from the first two episodes. Those episodes set their story arc from where they evolve as characters. If you'd assess their abilities across the series, an/or nearing the end of the series, you'd find they belong on A or S tear (depending which character we judge).
Mike went to prison. 😐 I’ve seen the whole show they are the worst lawyers ever lol. They constantly bluff with no evidence and are just extremely lucky they go against lawyers who are just as oblivious about the law as them. But it’s TV! It’s not supposed to be super realistic that’d be boring as hell. It’s just a fun watch
"why should you go to jail for a crime somebody else noticed?" A question right up there with and equally as valid as "Are we alone?" and "where do we go after we die?
I think you're being too generous. F for the lawyer who's clients went to jail for a year for breaking a law that doesn't exist. A working knowledge of the criminal code is a prerequisite to pass any kind of bar exam.
"This man has only once lost a case and it was when his client pleaded guilty. His special abilities include mind control and the ability to speak with the dead. F tier."
Objection. Lionel Hutz represents Marge in “Marge in Chains” where she’s given prison time after being convicted for shoplifting. He tries to submit a fake verdict which is: 1. Written on a cocktail napkin 2. Still says guilty 3. Guilty is spelled wrong.
The judge is awful in that case. I work as a paralegal in a prosecutor's office. Shoplifting ain't a prison case unless it's for jewelry, but then it moves into larceny
Larceny is just an arcane word for stealing a physical object (as opposed to embezzlement or fraud). Many states such as South Carolina have removed larceny from their legal lexicon because it is almost entirely redundant with "theft". Many more states such as Ohio have had pushes to do the same that ultimately went no where because it would have required too extensive of a rewrite of the state legal code.
That might be true for Phoenix in the first AA game, but he has been buffed since. He even had to be nerfed after Apollo Justice, where no one can question his law knowledge and skills. Even since the beginning his passion and justice spirit are the biggest on the list. Also we should take into account the weird law world he lives in, where trials only last 3 days and your client is "guilty until proven otherwise". He literally has to catch the real authors of the crimes just so his clients are declared not guilty. Not to mention the magatama, but you could say it's Maya's power and not entirely his. Thought I have to recognize a lot of the time relies on pure intuition and luck. Taking all this into account, he should be B tier at ABSOLUTELY WORST. I guess 🤔
It isn't even "Guilty until proven otherwise" it is "Guilty until you (a lawyer, not a detective) go and find the real culprit" "Guilty until you can pin this on someone else, hopefully the real culprit"
i was about to leave a comment like this. AA is a legal satire of the *Japanese legal system* & things are VERY different over there. I know it's not that deep but it's a little bit unfair to judge him by our world's standards when in-universe, he /is/ a pretty goddamn good lawyer and gets the reputation he does before [SPOILERS REDACTED] for a reason. (we don't talk about how he was written after AA4/Apollo Justice though. eugh)
Objection: Phoenix Wright is markedly different in the anime, and their interpretations of some of the cases is a bit...spotty. Beyond that, the legal system he's working in has several quirks that aren't really his fault: The world he lives in prioritizes speed and efficiency over accuracy, and thus several things are outright at his disadvantage. Each trial takes place over a maximum of three days, including all investigation of the case. As a defense attorney in the AA universe, you are not entitled to the findings during a police investigation until it's presented during trial; in fact, you are entitled to no evidence unless it's presented this way or found elsewhere, such as being provided by the client or finding it yourself. Thus, this means that almost all evidence in the AA universe is surprise evidence, as the rules preventing such things have been stripped away to support the need for speed and efficiency. Who has time for things like discovery? Is this system completely insane and unrealistic? Absolutely, it's bonkers crazy and is obviously designed to support Ace Attorney's particular style of narrative and gameplay. But, it's the system Phoenix Wright _has_ to deal with to be a defense attorney in the context of his universe. So how well is he able to deal with this system that is so obviously geared to ensure a guilty verdict? He is, without a doubt, one of the best defense attorneys (if not the best) operating within the system. He toppled a prosecutor who abused the system's quirks to maintain a *_40 year_* undefeated streak. And despite how it's set up, he has lost a grand total of 2 cases in his career (that we know of). He got disbarred for a little while after getting framed for falsifying evidence, but eventually his innocence was proven and he came roaring back. He has regularly pushed his way through this system's quirks by his own ability and understanding, and his dedication to his clients. He goes digging around crime scenes himself to figure out what happened, because he _has to_ in the system he works in. Not to mention that on top of this, he has the literal mystical ability to see through someone's lies and force secrets out of them that would have otherwise remained hidden. Whether or not this is allowable in a court of law is debatable, but he has it. So it's not like he doesn't have an understanding of how evidence works; the system he's in deliberately hides it from him and he has to wander through his cases in the dark. With all of this in mind, if you put him in the actual American legal system instead of the crazy one he has to deal with, and he had adjusted and learned to apply what he knows how to do to this system, I have _no doubt_ that he would be even more successful and regarded as an insanely good defense attorney. I know it's a matter of looking at this from the perspective of the American legal system, but it still seems to me that his situation does give him some leeway.
Objection overuled. I might agree that Phoenix Wright is much much better in the games BUT this video is about lawyers in television which means he is only talking about Phoenix Wright in the Anime. He unfortunately does not have the obligation to evaluate his character development in the games.
Also, Japan has a conviction rate of 99,4 - 99,7% meaning him loosing every trial regardless of who he represents is actually pretty on point. The whole game series is a satire of the japanese legal system.
@@RaquelleDeVil Which is a shame, since one particular thing excluded from the anime is his ability to LITERALLY SEE WHEN SOMEBODY IS HIDING SOMETHING. Can you imagine a real lawyer being able to see psyche locks?

Objection! Phoenix Wright works in a satirized future version of the Japanese legal system, where defendants get basically no time to prepare for trial. He has won virtually all his trials, a large number of them having maybe a single night to prepare. Given that he's severely disadvantaged in a grossly broken system and still comes out on top, I think he has earned a bit higher than an F.

You spend the whole commentary talking about how Harvey and Mike are actually awful, then put them in B tier. My brain is confused by this contradiction.
He said Harvey is not a good Trial Lawyer, which is kinda the point of Harvey. He settles, because there is so much you can control in a trial, with the judge and jury and witnesses. Settling makes sure you don’t lose, in a trial you can lose big time. Annie did most of the work. Even the talking. She got an innocent man to confess to a crime he didn't commit. The way she did it wouldn't work in real court, but Jeff was on the sidelines.
He also won, or at least achieved a positive outcome for Britta at the Olympic pool's judging table in Advanced Criminal Law. And under special skills, surely always knowing what to say and when to slap the table should be recognised as the innate skill that it is
And "He convinced a judge to dismiss five years of back taxes by getting him to agree that [a stripper] humping an American flag to "Back in Black" was not stripping but actually not for profit performance art!"
It'd be neat to see some international flavour on the channel - Rumpole's an obvious choice, and maybe some lesser-known legends like the two lawyers from classic Australian flick 'The Castle'. Devin might need to engage with lawyers from those jurisdictions in order to fully appreciate the lawyering on display, though.
I don't know if I saw every episode of Perry Mason but, I did see a lot. There was one episode where his client was guilty and he did get a confession from her while she was on the stand. His special skill is actually getting the guilty person into the courtroom so they can confess.
Yeah Winger was a mis-tier for sure. A)he had a law degree, it was his bachelor's that was fake. He was suspended until he fixed that problem. B)he was a successful DUI defense attorney before being snitched out by Alan. C)his special ability is persuasiveness. The reason the group didn't always listen is cause they knew him well. This is evidenced in the favy that he became less able to influence them as the show went on. A courtroom wouldn't know him so well so his persuasiveness would work wonders as it did in the past. D)his practice failed because he wanted to be a better person. He wasn't using his special ability correctly nor his killer instinct. The fact that so many unethical attorneys made A tier shows that Jeff should have been higher. At his most unethical, he was A tier for sure, B at the very least. I could be OK with C tier at the least as a final rank and that's only because he did fall a notch in what he'd do to win after Greendale.

I move for a bad-Court thingy! You mean a mistrial? That's why you're the Judge and I'm the law...talking guy. You mean lawyer?
Well yeah but free pizza.
🤣
That might be true for Phoenix in the first AA game, but he has been buffed since. He even had to be nerfed after Apollo Justice, where no one can question his law knowledge and skills.
Even since the beginning his passion and justice spirit are the biggest on the list.
Also we should take into account the weird law world he lives in, where trials only last 3 days and your client is "guilty until proven otherwise". He literally has to catch the real authors of the crimes just so his clients are declared not guilty.
Not to mention the magatama, but you could say it's Maya's power and not entirely his.

I think Legal Eagle's only exposure to Phoenix Wright is the anime reaction video he did on his channel. That's how it sounds like anyway...

i was about to leave a comment like this.

Though it's a show I think it shows a truer aspect to lawyers and behind the scenes deals
Can I second an objection? I don't actually think that'll fly in court, but luckily this is TH-cam

IMO Jeff Winger is deserving of S-Tier, he can convince anyone of literally anything. The proof is in the scene where he convinces the group that having Chang in the group is better than Rich. And his entire argument is that because they KNOW how terrible of a person Chang is, he must be better than Rich, who's more perfect than humanely possible and therefore hiding something. His closing statement puts it perfectly:

Objection! In the episode “Basic Lupine Urology”, we get to see Jeff Winger’s lawyering skills first-hand, and he ultimately wins the case of the murdered yam.
And under special skills, surely always knowing what to say and when to slap the table should be recognised as the innate skill that it is
Didn’t he also convince an arson victim he preferred his house on fire
And "He convinced a judge to dismiss five years of back taxes by getting him to agree that [a stripper] humping an American flag to "Back in Black" was not stripping but actually not for profit performance art!"
Need to go old school: Rumpole of the Bailey. Definitely S tier.
YES!!
Welp, you just explained the joke for me with Runkle of the Bailey (real Canadian lawyer out of Alberta.)
"it's Mabo, it's the vibe"
I was looking for this.
I don't know if I saw every episode of Perry Mason but, I did see a lot. There was one episode where his client was guilty and he did get a confession from her while she was on the stand.
His special skill is actually getting the guilty person into the courtroom so they can confess.
**Anxiously waits for Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer**
**Sees rating**
LEGIT LIST, MY DUDE.
8:42
Photographic memory imo is a better skill for the Detective class rather than the Lawyer class.
All he has to do is read actual law books and he would immediately be S tier
True. Just ask Shawn Spencer.
Okay but Winger destroyed the case of the yam and Shirley vs Pierce
His crowning achievement for me will always be the time when he turned a racist accusation back at the black guy who accused him in ten seconds.
@@Vesperitis I forgot about that lol
The world wasn't the only thing that changed on september 11th...
@@Mewse1203 I would also like to add, Jeff's practice failed because Abed refused to put his actual phone number on his TV commercial which severely affected his ability to acquire clients.
OBJECTION: Perry Mason did indeed represent guilty clients (unknown when he took the case). The first time was in "The Case of the Terrified Typist" in the shows first season.
Also, what about Franklin & Bash or The Grinder?
In the first Perry Mason book not only is his client guilty, but she also framed him for murder. The Perry Mason moment is getting her to confess, and then he goes and gets her out of it anyway.
I wanna lobby for Jeff Winger to get moved up solely based on the fact that he had tons of people convinced for a long time that he was actually a lawyer before he got caught and was forced to going to Greendale. Not only that but he was apparently pretty good before he was outed by his buddy- dudes got some solid lawyer skills whether he passed the bar or not lol
I imagine Devin dressing up in a fine Indochino suit on his days off, logging into Twitch, and streaming something classy like Legend of Zelda or Goldeneye
Can’t believe he missed kyle’s dad from South Park lol
Or south parks version of Johnnie Cochran
It does not make sense.
Objection, your honor!
Saul Goodman needs to be entered as S-tier lawyer! You forgot to mention, that he has absolutely the best TV-commercials that money can't buy!
And yes, your honor, I have called Saul already.
Jack McCoy deserves his own tier - S+. He's just that good.
I’ll allow it, but watch yourself, McCoy…
S-tier is already a stupid concept, so S+ is more stupider!
The plus is for his boyish charm
Actually, that would be tier SS
Well, I saw that E wasn't taken, so move the ones in D to E, C to D, ... Leave McCoy in S.
I feel like there would be a riot if Jack McCoy wasn't S.
As there should be.
I would have found a way to burn down the channel, yes.
I was waiting for Jack to make his appearance.
Jack McCoy is who made me want to me an attorney as a child, so I would throw a Molotov cocktail in his name, absolutely.
I was on pins and needles.
"Oh! Ranking fictional lawyers! This should be fun!"
"Phoenix Wright is F-Tier-"
*silently turns off computer and walks into the ocean...*
Agreed. He could've put him up higher in E. D at most tbh
I swear he put The Practice in for 5 seconds with no real commentary just to piss me off lol. I want my deep dive of an episode already!
man I would love to see him play the ace attorney games
I'd love to see a Courtroom Drama/Comedy spin-off of HIMYM called "Marshal Law"
There already is a show by that name (well, "Martial" Law) so it might be confusing
I never watched the show and even *I* want to see that!
Best part is they could bounce around the time line too, from when he was a lawyer to when he was a judge
Objection: This rating system is greatly biased against video game characters. All video game characters are being rated against what happens when a player controls them rather than canonically through their story narratives. As such, I have to declare that this video is subject to medium bias and therefore invalid as a point of comparison.
Two well noted TV shows you left off: The Defenders (1961- 1965) and LA Law (1986 - 1994)
Regardless of the Tier rating, I'll bet Robert Reed wished his legacy was as Ken Preston instead of Mike Brady.
Marshall's special ability is to yell "lawyered" 😂
And he aced the slaptitude test
Would’ve been wonderful to see Ron LaFlamme and Pete Monohan from Silicon Valley ranked!
Yesss Ron is like the chillest lawyer I’ve ever seen lol
"Can I be honest with you Richard?"
"Uh, Ron, you're my lawyer!"
I would have loved to.see Perry's most notable Rival, Hamilton.Burger, ranked.
Also; when's Legal Eagle gonna cover Silicon Valley? :-D
Most of the series is worth scrutiny but, if we can only get one episode, it ourght be The Patent Troll.
@@alm2187 As someone who studied law, I can say that the show is actually painstakingly accurate. They even throw in some offhand jokes only a lawyer would understand.
This is great. I love that Marshall Erikson is S Tier, he is genuinely a great lawyer and in a flash-forward we see that he actually becomes a Supreme Court Justice for the State of New York. I would've loved to see Matt Murdock and Laurel Lance on this list, but I suppose you can't cover everybody.
Yeah I watched the video to see either Matt or Laurel
Why do you think he's genuinely a great lawyer?
In New York, the Supreme Court is the lowest level state court. Justices are elected.
I haven't seen How I Met Your Mother in a long time, but I'm surprised that I managed to completely forget how he was a lawyer.
He has used other HIMYM clips in his videos, but this made me convinced that he has seen every single episode more then once and is a big fan.
Love how the logic of the universe is taken into account- with Lionel Hutz ranked alongside Saul Goodman
Perry Mason should get bonus points for having Ozzy write a song about him.
Objection: Lionel Hutz has lost majority of his cases. One example is Marge’s shoplifting case. The only reason that many of his cases shown in episodes are won are because of the Simpson children. My ranking: S Tier.
He went toe to toe with the devil and won, but it was due to Marge pointing out the vows that Homer wrote for her.
He somehow got Bart declared Mr. Burns' biological son in a trial for custody while representing Homer. That's failing so badly you break physics.
Blue-Haired Lawyer wipes the floor with him
@@phanatic215 I don't think Lionel Hutz can be credited with winning the case against the Devil, seeing as he deserted his client in the beginning of his opening statement. If anyone could be said to have represented Homer at the time of the ruling, it was Marge.
Surprised to see no Matt Murdock in the tier list.
He probably would've been pretty low. Matt was a shit lawyer since he's so busy superheroing. I think legal eagle did a reaction to the punisher trial scenes, he wasn't impressed.
@@killaxero86 there was also Foggy, who was pretty good. And i would have liked to see his opinion on Jessica Jones lawer.
Me too, but we all know he'd be pretty low. He's kinda distracted figing ninjas and stuff
I actually did watch Eli Stone with the family when I was younger! However, we stopped near the end of the series when my step dad kept getting second hand embarrassment from him reacting to the visions.
Are you going to have to devote a full episode to all Law and Orders LOL?
On Nebula!
On Nebula. 😂 i understand
@@LegalEagle Does it take a while for them to show up? I can't find it in your videos. And I really need to know your opinion on Ben Stone! Thanks.
@@SamBarge1 A friend who is an L&O original flavour junkie once made this comparison of Ben and Jack. Ben thinks the law is a shield and Jack thinks the law is a sword. Both are equally valid ways of looking at it but I do know which one made for better TV.
@@LegalEagle Is posted differently than your other videos on Nebula? I can't see it.
Man isn't this just the biggest crossover ever.
LawPickingLawyer and LegalEagle crossover be like:
nahhh, tierzoo and legaleagle are my two favorite professionals on youtube, the latter having more credentials obviously
Well, top tier crossover, for sure. But not straight-up broken, like Tom Scott with Legal Eagle and Jay Foreman in the TH-cam copyright system video.
Nah, the biggest crossover ever would be JoCat with LegalEagle
I guess all the E-tier lawyers are in the E-xtended version.
If you do a part 2, I would love to see where you put Diane Lockhart from The Good Wife / The Good Fight on this list
Yes more to this. Please do this again for film lawyers.
Tom cruise and Kevin bacon from a few good men
Lenny is S tier
I'm guessing you'd put Cousin Vinnie in S Tier?
@@PhilBoswell Vinnie is C at best. He didn't know about disclosure, proper objections, or dress codes.
Lol ytube only tells me now that people liked/speculated on this. I wanba hear people's S tiers.
Never saw this crossover coming
Im fairly certain they already did a video together a while back
@@earendilthemariner5546 they did
They are both part of the curiosity stream network.
Objection!
In Episode 39 "The Death of Harvey", Harvey Birdman manages to successfully retry every single case in his career simultaneously - the only attorney on the list to accomplish the feat, including Lesser Harvey. That unique achievement surely places him in the B Tier.
This comment just made my day. BIIIIIRRRRRDDDDDDDDD MAAAANN!
I would've given Jeff Winger an A. How often does your lawyer have a degree from a community College? Or win a trial against Subway? Or teach law at said community College?
