- Over the last few years on TH-cam I’ve reacted to 16 medical dramas. Today, in honor of counting down the New Year, I decided to rank them from least accurate to most accurate. Remember, just because a show is inaccurate doesn’t mean it isn’t an entertaining and fun show, it just means it fails the Doctor Mike realness-test. I also recognize this list is purely subjective, so if you disagree with any of my rankings please let me know in the comments below and let me know where you think these shows actually belong!

That and Hugh Laurie is just amazing
House is a great show because house is a genius diagnostician. The show gets a lot of things right but I think it’s procedurally inaccurate. Like as diagnosticians they should be covering their bases first and doing all basic tests and bloodwork to diagnose patients but they don’t always have the order right. That said, they counteract that by accurately representing extremely rare conditions and I think it’s very neat

I'm not surprised ER was the most accurate, it was originally written by Michael Crichton who studied medicine before becoming an author. Great to see House near the top too, and the Good Doctor

Dr Mike: Scrubs is a comedy, but sometimes they are mean to the patients.
Also Dr Mike: I like House.
Fax, I also feel like Scrubs should be higher on the list. His only complaints were sarcasm and weren’t meant to represent how real people behave.
@@Zaz5y he was ranking medical accuracy not how good the show, or how well written it is. Meaning how close it is to the reality in working in the meddical field.

While House is one of my favorite dramas of all time, I definitely agree with the positionings for medical accuracy. In my opinion, it's by far the best drama on the list, but some of that drama definitely creeps on the point of malpractice. So I fully get why it's in third.
You are spot on. There is no way a doctor would get away with doctoring under the influence, not obeying his boss and making sex jokes to any attractive female.

In real life there are specific professionist like biologists pharmacologists chemists and technicians to do that. In doctor house they make u think that doctors can do and know how to do ANYTHING. I think him doing those forbidden things is also some part of the appeal, because normally you want your doctor to be as professional as possible but there you have the rogue variant which is also interesting to explore

I'm not a medical student but I have always been so interested in doctor and vet shows. Good doctor has really been interesting because of the long and intresting episodes.
@@FaithSmith-hi7yx yes i completely agree. They're fun to watch for everyone. But the problem with the shows which happens around a medical center is that there are so many instances that they're not realistic , neither medically nor legally , and by legally i mean the consequenses of their actions , like a nurse or a resident do sth without the permission from their supervisor or boss and they get away with it just cuz they're the main character. There are so many examples , but the good doctor is one of the most accurate medical shows , especially in medical category itself , yes there are some events which aren't realistic but overall it's acceptable , btw i just speak for myself and my refrence is my own experience in hospitals and medical system. Ofc they differ in different places of the world

As a dieheard ER fan, I love to hear from a doctor that it is in the top for medical accuracy. I love that show and it pains me that people forgot about it as soon as Grey's Anatomy came around. It such a great show and really deserves its flowers.
And it has one if the best theme songs of all time.
My mom recently got me into watching it and I’ve been binging like mad. I think the only majorly inaccurate thing I’ve seen is Dr. Green’s treatment of the mass shooter. The ethical dilemma and complicated personal feelings are accurate, but not much else is. Especially with Dr. Green considering he was the one being professional and urging his coworkers to follow his example after Carole attempted suicide in the very first episode.
I agree! I started watching it after Grey's went south
I love scrubs because its just the right combination of being funny and being deep, sad, and serious. And some episodes were actually about the patient-doctor relationship. And it often teaches you some lessons. And despite many funny unrealistic scenes, its kinda superb in delivering themes like a fresh doctor not having the confidence to do some tasks or a doctor unable to keep up with the progress etc.
It's literally based on actual doctors who exist in real life's stories too- and the first season was filmed in a old hospital.
@@lexlane_ The whole thing was filmed in an abandoned hospital, not just the first season. They only switched to a set for the 9th/spinoff season.
Ok we can all agree Attaway General is the worst medical show to ever exist.

YES, I also think that "code black" is the most undervalued medical series, because it combines absolutely everything and the plot is well-built
I absolutely fell in LOVE with Code Black from the first episode! So sad they cancelled it…😞
House and ER are two of my all time favourite medical shows (I was named after a character in ER because it was my mothers favourite show!) But in terms of accuracy, I’d say my personal pick would be This Is Going To Hurt - which might not be well known in the US because it’s a British limited series but it was incredible and showed beautifully the stresses and trauma underpaid NHS workers go through. Definitely recommend to anyone who hasn’t seen it!

Nah, it's ma8n focus is relationships in the hospital between doctors. It's not a bad show (by any means), I can see why Dr.Mike ranked it where he did

With the New Amsterdam firing thing it actually happened in real life. The show is based on Eric Manheimer and his time at Bellevue Hospital. In an article I read is said "he fired an entire department, hired all new attending physicians, essentially replacing the med students who were running the hospital, and putting himself in conflict with the medical school” it’s a really interesting article.
But not on the same day without notice surely 😂😂 Think Dr Mike’s point was that you wouldn’t fire a whole department without having found replacements first
@@littlelilacbunny the article implies it was on the same day and found replacements later. I haven’t read Eric Manheimer’s autobiography as it’s hard to get here in Australia so I can only go by the article.
Finally someone recognizes the beauty behind Code Black, it's my second favourite medical drama since House M.D and I got mad when it was cancelled, because it was so good
I was in awe watching Code Black. I remember jumping around all excited trying to get someone, anyone to watch it so we could talk about it! Huge fan of ER and House too. An episode of ER had a huge impact on me and while in nursing school I spent a ridiculous amount of time studying DIC even though it’s rare, also one of the reasons I didn’t want to be an OB nurse.

Man, I grew up watching ER. I never realized it at the time, but with hindsight, yeah, that was definitely the most medically accurate. And the show had some truly heartbreaking moments. The one character with cancer who died on the beach? I think of him every time I hear “over the rainbow”.
My dad spent a good part of my life in the hospital. So I was surprised to hear from nurses saying that Grey's Anatomy was accurate in the drama that goes on in hospitals. Then I'd ask interns and residents, and they'd have a huge list as to why it's so inaccurate. One of them told me her and her friends have contests for who can point out the most inaccuracies in a single episode.
The fact that House MD was third only for the crazy nature of House himself is the most accurate thing ever. It's why we love House. This was a fun list to look through!
To be fair there were a few just blatantly wrong episodes. (The ricketsialpox episode implied that it was seriously deadly and could be mistaken for small pox… the patient from that episode would be the first ever person to die from that illness)

ER will forever be my favourite medical drama. Because of it's accuracy but also because of the character Dr. Kerry Weaver. Just when she was being introduced as a character, is when I was getting evaluated for my first pair of fore arm crutches. Truly, I could relate to her character and as a young teen, I loved it.
It could not have been anything other than ER. Its not just the best medical show, its one of the best shows period. I watched it on the original run and it was the kind of show that we all used to race home to watch.

Yep. My mom was a nurse in a very busy level 1 trauma center for 15 years. She could not and cannot watch ER. She said it stressed her out because it was too realistic.

Thank you for this! I appreciate the time you saved us in making this list. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I did not expect Doogie Howser to be so far down, but it is an older show so that's fair. I always worry about seeing inaccurate medical information in shows and storing it in my subconscious as "fact" and later using it in a book without thinking. Really appreciate this channel for setting the record straight and calling out the medical inaccuracies. Thank you. 🙂
I’m really impressed that Scrubs made it to #6 and is just out from a pack including ER and House. Speaks volumes to the show runner’s’ investment into the technical aspects as well as the laughs.
Actually, you forgot a couple I’d be interested in knowing their relative rank: MASH and Chicago Hope. Which honestly, even if MASH wasn’t the most scientifically accurate, it still stands out as being one of the most realistic tellings of the realities of war.

I'll take House over The Good Doctor. The premise is very similar: Brilliant socially challenged doctor solves insane medical cases. But the Good Doctor, while well acted, has nothing on Hugh Laurie's House.
Loved that the Cuddy actor was Glassmans oncologist and the crazy fisherman patient was thr Wilson actor
I wouldn't really say 'created' when it comes to The Good Doctor.
The Good Doctor is based on a South Korean TV series of the same name.
Its insane that scrubs, which isn't intended to be medically accurate, is that much higher on the list than some medical dramas intended to be mostly truthful.

Scrubs is based on a real person at a real hospital, it helps a lot
Scrubs was intended to be medically accurate. Production regularly consulted with real doctors regarding what they wanted to put on the show. This was a key factor to why scrubs was often praised as being the most medically accurate show of its time.
@@walterulloa3839 my b. I was talking mostly in the sense that the show is not focused on the medical aspect primarily and rather on the dramatic aspect.
Was thinking the exact same - I was cringing at every early number as I just knew it was going to be SUPER low. Not that I can as I LOVE Scrubs and have seen it over a dozen times.
I'm so glad people still remember ER, I grew up with that show, I loved it so much. And it's good to know it was that accurate.

my mom used to watch ER when she was in med school and she said it actually helped her haha. she said she had a test and didn’t know the answer but remembered she heard it on ER and then she knew what it was.

High school: I sometimes pulled test answers from animanics XD television shows sometimes are pretty decent at making us remember stuff

ER is really the only medical drama I've ever watched. I just could never really get into dramas much, but ER was intriguing enough to get me hooked on it.
There is a show that I'm sure you've heard of and maybe even watched called LOST where a doctor was the lead character and I'd be interested in your thoughts on how accurate some of the medical situations were in that show and if you would have done anything differently if you were in the shoes that the doctor in that show was in.

My mom watches a lot of shows like these, binging and rewatching for years, and Grey's is definitely a fave of hers... but we started when ER was new, and our household watched all of it, all the way through. It's the only series of the genre that we own on DVD. I'm SO glad it made the top of your list. I'm glad we got the accuracy, to our benefit, so many years ago.

I love when you react to medical shows! There’s one I’m watching currently that’s called ‘This is Going to Hurt’, it came out last year I think. I’m only on the first episode but so far, pretty good. I’ve read the book and it definitely focuses more on the medical aspect, rather than the drama. You should check it out anyway!

Fun fact: A house md episode where the patient had a problem due to a botched hip replacement procedure actually helped a doctor ( who was a fan of the show) solve a similar case.

The one thing I love about House is they always bring up amyloidosis, however when the one episode the patient had it, amyloidosis was a complete mystery! 😉😜
Well a House M.D episode about a biochemical anomaly helped me solve a case study in my biochemistry paper in medical school. So I can relate
That same case is in Grey’s Anatomy where Dr. Richard Webber had a cobalt hip which was poisoning him making him have hallucinations and etc…
I'm not sure if you would be willing to face subtitles, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Korean series "Hospital Playlist"! As a complete layperson I always thought it was a bit too emotionally sunshiney (all the characters are kind and devoted doctors who basically never make significant mistakes), but the medicine seemed really realistic!

House M.D isn’t always as accurate as ER or good doctor but it’s the most entertaining medical drama to watch. In my list it’s definitely the top. Love it!!!
This is %100 true because unlike all the other cool and hip 24 year olds I know, I decided I wanted to invest my time in watching House MD in the year of 2022. It’s a timeless show
And unlike others, it's very obvious this isn't realistic. They focus on the rarest of the rare and the craziest cases. Of course much of it is just script and not accurate.
Unlike most ER shows that try to seem realistic.
@@jsas2047 An actual doctor explained how it is more realistic than most medical shows. I am not saying it is 100% realistic and obviously you can't do that if you want to make it entertaining for a bigger audience. But it is certainly one of the best.

What about Cells At Work!?!? I think that show deserves an honorable mention for accurately describing and explaining how the different blood cells work, and how the different bacteria and viruses work too
ER is my favourite! I watched it with my parents when it first aired and I loved those grown-up ladies and gentlemen. I rewatched the series a couple of years ago and I was amazed HOW YOUNG they all were!))) I'm sure I'll watch them a couple of decades later and I'll say: Oh what a bunch of nice kids)))

I wish more medical shows would be more accurate and give credit to more professions! It’s always either all about doctors or all about nurses, etc. No show has ever shown the dynamic relationships between doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, radiologists, engineering, environmental services, etc that it takes to make a hospital run. It really takes a village, and I wish that would be shown more in the media! Also, Dr. Mike is the best! 😊

Chicago Med does a decent job of it, I think
I worked as an extra on Code Black several times, and they always had a medical professional on set whose job was to make sure the actors/extras were doing things correctly. And they hired a handful of extras weeks before the first day of filming, and sent them all through a kind of medical bootcamp. I was really impressed.
The quality GLOWS!!! (Only complaint I've got about the show is what's the doctor's problem that they never call the firemen when they obviously need them xD)

As an avid greys fan AND a medical professional, it is a very accurate placement on the list. Grey Sloan has like 3 nurses and an over abundance of doctors doing jobs that are not the job of a doctor.

@@Robi2009 Yeah but the group under House is a very special group handling only rare cases that others can't solve. So kind of makes sense. All House's subordinates had to be all-rounders, bordering on being super-doctors.
For me, House MD and Scrubs simply are the best shows. Yes they are not the most realistic, but House MD is just nice to learn something while having somewhat of a plot to follow, while Scrubs is comedy with a bit of truth sprinkled in every now and then
Chicago Med was always my favorite show growing up, especially my favorite of all the "Chicago" shows (Chicago PD, Chicago Fire and Chicago Justice). So much so that it inspired me to pursue the medical field and become a licensed Phlebotomist.
Wow that is so great, I love Chicago med so much and I want to do biomedical/biochemical research in the future!

The guy that created ER went to medical school, Michael Crichton. He was always VERY accurate with any of his books and made sure the accuracy was still there when they were adapted. He wrote Jurassic Park and Sphere too.

I'm not a medical professional, and I'm not ranking these based on medical accuracy. But here's how I'd rank the ones I've watched for their entertainment value:
1. House
2. Scrubs
3. The Good Doctor - Viewing on pause around Season 3.
4. Grey's Anatomy - Quit watching after Season 3 (and I'm glad I did lol). Couldn't take that whole Burke-Yang fiasco. It was so contrived!
And because of this video, I feel like checking out ER 🙂
ER was written by Michael Crichton (RIP) who did medical school in Harvard, so it helps for the accuracy. :)
Crichton is my favorite author. I love his work. Jurassic Park obviously, but also Twister and The Andromeda Strain are my favorites.

I was gonna say that. Crichton is definitely known for using as many realistic elements despite his fictitious plots. I remember one of the reviews on a book jacket read “he definitely makes you think revived dinosaurs, man eating nanobots, or time travelling knights are possible” and it’s so true about his writing
@@rachelhughes8487 for me I really loved prey. It felt a bit more like a horror book because some parts were creepy for me, or at least creepier than what I normally read, but it did such a good job of keeping the suspense going that I never wanted to put it down

would love to see what you think of Emergency! its a show from the 70's or 80's i believe and its mainly about two firefighters who sign up for a paramedic program, so you get the fire and paramedic side, but it also follows a couple doctors and a nurse at the hospital in their city. no idea how accurate it is but i loved watching it growing up, it is a little hard to find though since its older

I’m currently hooked on reruns of an old 70’s drama called Emergency! From what I understand, the episodes were actually based on real incidents that the LA fire department attended to back then. They took great pains to be as medically accurate as they could be. Sure, there was drama on the show outside of the medical emergencies (the lead actor Randolph Mantooth was a bit of a ladies man on the show and they kind of played that up) but I really appreciate the fact that they did their best to make it authentic. Lots of the vehicles and props from the show are in the LA County Fire Museum because the show was rather groundbreaking for its time. But I’m an old fart and I remember this show, whereas Dr Mike is far too young to have watched this or even heard of it.

Absolutely love the authenticity produced by professionals who can oversee and back it up. I know Scrubs took a page out of that book, and it really is refreshing to see a show that isn't about drama based off unrealistic happenings.
