This is one of the best reporting moments I’ve seen about these fires with the compassion rather than the sensationalism. Also, I am very impressed with her knowledge of these vehicles and which one is which right down to knowing what year the vehicle is. Even if she looked that up on Google before she made this video it’s impressive because she was able to present it effortlessly as if it was just knowledge she already had which it may very well have been. I was on many of the these streets yesterday as part of my utility employee duties. The higher up the hill I drove the more destruction I witnessed. It’s an older neighborhood and I witnessed many classic cars of all types burned to a crisp. Fire melts automobile alloy wheels and glass into puddles. As a “car guy” it was sad to witness so many Porsches, Jeeps, classic pickups, old Cadillac’s, desirable short-bed Chevy C-10’s, etc. destroyed. Fire spares nothing except ceramic pots and shower tile. Even steel gets warped from the heat. I feel bad for the residents and all of the future insurance headaches the owners will have to deal with IF they are insured. I can’t imagine anyone surviving the raging inferno at its peak. The FD found one body during my shift and they were waiting for the coroner who refused to come up due to safety concerns.
Ok, good news if owners are safe. Otherwise it’s kinda hard to feel sympathetic to people who owned $5-10M properties and like, literally, a collection of dozen+ antique cars! These 1%-ees will be ok! It’s not like they are gonna be homeless after this event, unlike 99%
A lot of those homes are mid-century ramblers that probably sold for less than $20k and are paid off. I think the term is "property rich" when you find yourself suddenly owning a million-plus dollar home that you bought in the early 70s for $20K. That's exactly what happened to my family, and none of them are rich. Yeah there are lots of rich people in So. Cal, but there are a ton of retirement age people who aren't swimming in cash. I've had two classic vehicles for years that I could afford back then but not now. I have a friend who was a welder and has awesome cars all over his property, but he bought the place over thirty years ago, and got the cars one-by-one as he could afford it. Doesn't mean he could afford all that now - he can't. I'm sure people drive by and call him rich - he isn't, not by a long shot.
