How mRNA Medicine Will Change the World | Melissa J. Moore | TED

  • The secret behind medicine that uses messenger RNA (or mRNA) is that it "teaches" our bodies how to fight diseases on our own, leading to groundbreaking treatments for COVID-19 and, potentially one day, cancer, the flu and other ailments that have haunted humanity for millennia. RNA researcher Melissa J. Moore -- Moderna's chief scientific officer and one of the many people responsible for the rapid creation and deployment of their COVID-19 vaccine -- takes us down to the molecular level, unraveling how mRNA helps our bodies' proteins maintain health, prevent disease and correct errors in our genetic code. "We have entered an entirely new era of medicine," Moore says.

      None of this matters anymore, the vax got put on the schools/kids schedule for shots to take before school starts each year. Which means, as of last week Pfizer and Moderna are free to make as many vaccines for Covid as possible without the option for the public to sue over the vaccines ever. Game over.

      Well lets look at the figures shall we. In the USA, the incidence of mRNA vaccine-related myocarditis comes in at 8·4 to 26·7 cases per 100 000 males. However the Myocarditis risk is higher after SARS-CoV-2 virus infection and not being vaccinated and comes in at 59·0 to 63·7 per 100 000 males. So 3 to 7 times more likely to get heart problems from being infected with covid and not being vaccinated than from the vaccine.
      They are working on an new mRNA vaccine that they can tailor make to your own specific cancer trials are underway in Australia for one on melanoma. So yes a whole new era but then perhaps you think we shouldn't do this?

      I don't think you'll find a single "paper". Rather, there is a large and lengthy body of research that studies the two different avenues of mRNA delivery - lipid nano-particles that cross the cellular barrier and adenovirus tailored to deliver an mRNA payload.
      You should probably read something basic on the development history of mRNA vaccines, then do more specific searching based on what you learn there. For example:
      "The tangled history of mRNA vaccines", Nature, 14 Sept 2021.

    • @sociallyconstructedonline
      @sociallyconstructedonline 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jamesmason2228 Yup, this.
      For real though, as someone who specializes in social science I can absolutely confirm that singular papers are not how we make discoveries. If anything the discoveries are made 15 years before we've officially announced it, because we have to wait for like several dozen papers to be released to show a consensus, and the seminal paper published in a journal that connects them all is called a "meta study". By the time the meta study comes out, most of the scientific communities are just like, "well duh, we've known this for a decade."
      Peer review processes are rarely fast enough to contain the excitement of boundless discovery. That is what makes peer review so critical. It's literally the leash that prevents us from running away with our snake-oil minds.

      @@bighands69 Technology is the same, whether you apply it to a vaccine or a cancer drug. You inject mRNA, your body makes the encoded protein. Then, depending on where it is expressed (inside cells or at the surface is a very different outcome), your body produces antibody or not. In either case, you want safety data, it is the basics of medicine ("do not harm"). Now I totally agree with you that a cancer patient stage 4 would likely more readily accept greater risks associated with a new drug/technology. Normally, not healthy people, not young people, not kids, not 6-months old babies (but clearly the vaccine roll out has shown what people are ready to do for restaurants, cinemas, etc..I'm still shocked to be honest). Again, this mRNA technology might turn out to be revolutionary, but it should go through the normal clinical trials (they are long and stricts for a reason). All I'm say'n.

    As a scientist myself and having been in the industry for years developing therapeutics, I have to say, I think this is remarkable technology. However, the mRNA vaccine designed for COVID 19 has not been studied extensively enough to provide this therapeutic to the world. There are several questions that have not been fully addressed including:
    1) Which cells uptake this mRNA and express the spike protein?
    2) At what extent is there an autoimmune response, if any?
    3) Can the mRNA be reverse-transcribed into cDNA then integrated into host genome via LINE1?
    If anyone has any peer-reviewed articles relating to my above questions I would be happy to read these.

    • @jamesmason2228
      @jamesmason2228 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Your questions are strangely basic and weirdly leading for someone who claims to be involved with the development of therapeutics. It's a poor scientist who doesn't know how to even begin a literature search of the sort you imply.
      I suspect you really have an opinion and you're just lying in wait to see if you can ambush someone who has a basic but not thorough knowledge - so that you can feel better about yourself. A real working professional in therapeutics wouldn't be posting what you just did anywhere - let alone here.

She's talking about mRNA medicines as tools for regenerative medicine i.e. tools to stave off age related diseases. Yes, eating natural foods and exercise are important to staying healthy as we age naturally, but the most effective ways to stave off age related diseases will be from regenerative medicines. Yes, there is a lot of scepticism about long term side effects, but once long term studies are completed, this could definitely well and truly be a reliable revolutionary medicine.

      With the COVID vaccines the mRNA was told to make a fake protein that mimicked the COVID spike protein, so the immune system would fight it (and whichever of our cells made it). Since our body parts do talk to each other, these vaccines are already teaching the body to fight against itself. Eczema and rheumatoid arthritis are both auto-immune diseases already. What the mRNA technology needs to do is teach the body to STOP fighting against itself!

    Engaging in regular exercise and maintaining a healthy BMI (Body Mass Index) is truly a powerhouse for natural disease prevention. Exercise not only strengthens your cardiovascular system, enhances immune function, and improves overall physical and mental well-being, but it also plays a key role in regulating weight. Controlling your BMI through a balanced diet and regular physical activity is a dynamic duo that significantly reduces the risk of various diseases.
    Exercise acts as a natural anti-inflammatory, lowers blood pressure, and enhances insulin sensitivity, contributing to the prevention of chronic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Moreover, it supports healthy metabolism, helping to keep your weight in check. A balanced BMI is associated with a lower risk of cancer, joint issues, and even mental health disorders.

I recall when the top execs from Pfizer and Moderna were interviewed last year, and they were all smiles because they had just become, not millionaires, but billionaires, at the expense of millions of people with no $$.
