I think the Octoling hairstyles were rejected because they resembled those of a stereotypical African American (especially the cornrows) and Nintendo didn't want to represent the race rudely (since you have to pay for the Octo Expansion and it would be unfair if you had to pay to unlock the "African American" hairstyles).
I'm glad they scrapped the idea of Pearl being an Octoling. If they kept that idea, then Off the Hook could have seriously been villains, kind of like the "anti-Squid Sisters" and it wouldn't fit for Splatoon 2, being the second game in the series, where we are still being Inklings and considered Octolings as our enemies.
I also feel like Pearl and Marina's friendship is way more meaningful with one being and inkling and the other an octoling, which was also a great way to start the reconciliation between the two species.
Two things: 1) I kinda wished that the model of Yoshi was still in the game so hackers can just go in as Yoshi and confused the hell out of everyone 2) I wish they continue that Commander Tartar design as a conserved human in an astronaut suit and had it become the giant blender mech as part of the escape. 3) I wish that they kept that buff Octarian so they can have it in the beach themed levels in story mode
Legendary Fact: Muscular Octarian was supposed to be the secret boss in Octo Expansion. To increase the chance of winning they remove it and add Agent 3 in its place. (bad english)
