    I took the Canon 85mm f1.2 RF lens and EOS R into a Real World Situation to run it through it's paces. The focus at 1.2 which I generally have a tough time nailing on a DSLR, NAILED time and time again. Is this lens worth it or are the camera bodies holding it back?

      The new primes look fantastic but I think the jury is still out on who is going to really bring home the bacon with a pro body. Nikon has some great primes now as well. For me, it's all going to come down to the bodies. Meanwhile, I'll keep shooting with the D850, 1 DX II and the E-M1 MK II until one of the big three are ready for prime time.

    I went from the 85 f/1.2 II to the Sigma 85 Art then the 85 1.4L IS, all are great lenses but the RF 85 blows them away. I put them all side by side in a comparison and the RF has the sharpest subject and smoothest backgrounds. The 85 f/1.2 II is the slowest and has the least contrast of all. I completely agree with Jared here, working pros will want this RF lens and I’ll be selling the others. I’ve been nailing more shots at my weddings and I can make nice crops from full body shots where needed. I’ve yet to see any fringing on the wedding dresses, jewelry, or in backlit situations which are difficult to fix sometimes, especially in rain shots at night with a light behind the subjects. I’ve shot at least 15,000 shots on this lens so far and the weight isn’t too bad, feels the same as the Sigma ART.

      most reviewers are not using Canon lenses as Canin engineers intended. Canon intended that Canons dpp lens correction tool is used in post. My verion 1 85mm f1.2 looks beautifull when Canons dpp is used, as was always intended by Canon. The bokeh is buttery smooth - better than the series 2.

      Well today opinion = fact, so... Be that as it may, taking the point further, Canon looks to be focusing entirely on pros and ultra rich prosumers in the future (for FF mirror less) simply because of the cost of the glass. Given this and Canon’s own forecast for plummeting camera sales, this then begs this question; are there actually enough buyers out there to maintain financially viable sales volumes? How will it maintain cash flow to sustain product development cycles? And can Canon afford to keep developing DSLRs at all, or will the range be left to wither as sales continue to declined? Is the M series the cash cow to feed FF mirror less and will it generate enough cash? Mmmmm.

      @@klackon1 I've seen comparisons between the eye AF on the EOS R vs eye AF on the A7iii and the Canon had more keepers. The Sony eye AF box stuck like glue, but the shots weren't always in focus. Even more surprising, the full length shots where the Canon reverted to face detection still had more keepers than the A7iii. If you think I'm making it up I can find the video for you. The guy testing owns and uses both cameras professionally, so he wasn't biased.
      His tests were initially of a static model and then she walked along a backlit path towards the camera and he shot using continuous AF.

    For portraits I've been loving my EOS R as I never miss getting sharp focus all the time. However, for event photography this camera is slow and I hate the delay when you shoot from the screen to view finder. Somehow the focusing is faster using the screen. I look forward to when I can have my RF holy trinity and primes, as I don't want to always use an adapter for a few lenses and my native RF glass. I am very tempted to get the RF 85 f/1.2. I normally shoot with my 100mm f/2.8 IS, which is easy to focus with... since the RF 85 focuses better, I do want to try it out...

      Jared is starting to say crazy things like Tony Northrup, you should get a shirt that say's "prime lenses don't need image stabilization" with a picture of a 400mm f2.8 IS lens on it. Seriously what is he taking about? Prime lenses as short as 28mm exist, even from Canon so you don't even need to bring up super-tele lenses to make this sound ridiculous. This is like Tony saying "crop sensors gather less light!"

    • @TechnoBabble
      @TechnoBabble 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@patricksmith2553 Crop sensors do gather less light. Not sure why you're trying to make that statement out like it's wrong. It literally has less surface area for gathering light, meaning at the same aperture and shutter speed it gathers less light, which is why they have more noise at the same ISO.

    • @patricksmith2553
      @patricksmith2553 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TechnoBabble Sensors are not like picture windows, if the pixel site size is the same than they gather the same amount of light. It's per unit area, or pixel site size and even depends on sensor architecture such as BSI or not. Trust me I am 100% right, but probably what you're referring to is if a full frame sensor has larger pixel sites than it's DX counter part, as in if both were 24mp, than yes the full frame would do better with high ISO. It's the larger size of the pixel sites, not the sensor size. If both DX and FX have the same size pixels and same sensor architecture than they gather the same amount of light, period, end of story. You can't just make a blanket statement that full frame gathers more light, it's not true, thats why exposure does not change. Have you ever heard of a light meter with a FX or DX setting? No you have not, they don't exist, it does not matter the size of the sensor! Now I get what you mean, but I'm still right, regardless.

    • @TechnoBabble
      @TechnoBabble 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@patricksmith2553 You are sorely mistaken. Go look at images from a 24mp APS-C camera and from the 61mp A7R IV. Do two picture from those cameras have the same noise at the same ISO because their pixels are about the same size? No. Full frame sensors literally gather more light because they are physically larger, therefor they have more surface area and more light hits them. The setting of ISO is meant to standardize exposure across all platforms, it has no bearing on actual light gathered. The reason APS-C cameras have more noise a the same ISO compared to full frame is because they have less information to work with and have to boost the signal more to get the same exposure. This is why ISO exists. Also that argument of larger photosites being better is nonsense and has been disproven many times. Compare images between the D810 and the A7s and tell me which ones look better.

    • @patricksmith2553
      @patricksmith2553 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TechnoBabble Wow you're crazy passionate about this, but your 100% wrong. The size of the sensor has nothing to do with it, it's the pixel pitch. It's per unit area not total area. It's not like a picture window or even a solar panel. We can just agree to disagree, but I know I am right so it's all good.

    Technically speaking, IS elements are not “Floating Lens Elements”. FLE’s are actually present in the lens, and used to maximize performance through the entire focusing range. Also, the superior chromatic aberration correction is due to special glass elements, not coatings.

    Compared to Leica glass, this lens is cheap. Jared really nailed the point here. Finally, after all the BS of last year's FF mirrorless announcements, Jared finds a setup that truly improves his professional photographic results that he is being PAID to do. He focused on real time results, not just more blather about specs and what the system is missing. Thanks Jared for sharing what you actually experienced with this setup in the field, doing what you get paid to do. To everyone else, you are in competition with this guy, so either pay up or shut up.

    Somebody watching this video may think that EOS R is a really bad camera that is not taking the full advantage of this lens. I totally disagree with Jared. What could EOS R do better with this lens? Maybe having some MPix more and recording 4k without crop and... Nothing else. This is a typical portrait lens, rather for stills than a video and with more than enough MPix for 99% of cases. Yes, of course, it has one card slot and burst rate that is below the average in the segment, still, none of those will affect the final result (except the card failure lol or if you are shooting sports, which anyway this lens is not made for).
    I bought EOS R to become my second camera, having 5Dmk4 (backup body for portrait sessions and second body for shooting events without changing the lens too often). Because of how good the EOS R AF is, it became my first choice for portraits. I have two Sigmas, 35mm, and 85mm 1.4 Art and with my 5D shooting at 1.4 my hit rate was miserable (40% at most). With EOS R and Eye AF it is over 95%.

    • @RETRONEXT

      Basti S I think Jared is arguing that it's tough to invest this much money into a lens without a full SYSTEM to support a pro photog. Sure the R might get most out of this particular lens (although arguably you could get a lot more out of it with IBIS), but to throw $2700 into a lens mount with a body lacking some of the features you're mentioning (higher mpx, better eye AF, IBIS, faster burst rate, two card slots, etc.) is a compromise.
      I fully believe the pro R is coming with most/all these boxes checked and will make this glass worth it to those photogs looking for a system that can cater to all of their needs.

    • @jneiberger
      @jneiberger 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I also disagree with Jared. I don't understand his dislike of the EOS R. I've been taking the best photos of my life since I got it. It vastly improved the IQ and workflow, as well as focusing. And I'm still learning little things it can do. It is a superb camera. I was tempted to switch to the Sony A7iii, but I take mostly portraits and didn't want to deal with the Sony skin tone issues. What I get out of this camera is phenomenal and exactly what I want.

      @@RETRONEXT, Of course, PRO is coming and we all know that.
      Still, EOS R is a $2000 camera body so hating it for not having some features that more expensive cameras have is ridiculous. Also, the way it is presented in this video can make some people think, that EOS R is a rubbish camera compared to other brands and it still managed to take those great shots. None of those "missing" features would make a difference in this backstage shooting. It is the lens that has the biggest impact on the final picture, not MPixels, card slots and burst rate.

    • @RETRONEXT
      @RETRONEXT 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @jneiberger @basti S Don't get me wrong, I think spec sheets are overrated and that most photogs, with the exception of some specialties (sports/wildlife/etc.) would find the current R more than suitable for their workflow. I'm a Canon shooter who shoots wildlife on the side so perhaps some of my gripes are just because the R system bodies aren't yet great for fast action. ( I shoot w/ 5d4 and 7dmkii primarily) ;)

    No, but’ it’d be fun to try out, and I thank you for this review.. And not necessarily because of the cost. The 85 1.4 is still a pro lens in build and image and AF and it gives me image stabilization, helping me shoot at lower ISO when appropriate, and the difference in the bokeh from the 1.2 is minuscule. For me, what I gain with the 1.4 is more valuable than what I lose by not having the 1.2.

I have many cameras that I've kept throughout my life and I still shoot with film from time to time but I'm also hanging out to see what Canon gives us as a Pro body mirrorless and I will almost certainly buy it, what's on offer now is, I think, not worth the money.

What about that isn’t “top of the line”? We are talking about a more modern version of a 5D IV! I could understand if you were talking about it’s internal video recording capabilities, which really are good despite the specs, but we are talking about photography! nice video. i think what is holding back canon mirrorless (and canon in general) is lack of IBIS. for me its makes a huge diffrence....on the canon eos m5 with trying to get good portrait photos i would often miss the shot...not get the person in focus either shaked the camera too much or whtaever....would happen a lot actually and a photo that could have been super nice turns out to be meh.......with the Sony A7 II i notice my photos are more in focus as they should be and i hit it far more often..it may be i get a bit nervous sometimes in doing portrait photos as im not a pro so i may over shake the camera or something........i dont know. but whatever the case i find having IBIS really helps nail the shot in focus far more then not. so id HIGHLY recommend those to consider a IBIS model and i WISH Canon would get with the times and PUT freaking IBIS IN Their cameras! also its a HUGE help for video for being less shaky. This looks like a great lens, but in my personal opinion, the f1.2 aperture is something that should be used selectively. I like how it can create a great deal on focus on the subject when applied in wider shots, but with the close-up shots of just the face, I think the effect is too much. Often most of the details in the face are completely out of focus, especially when the subject is not standing completely perpendicular to the camera, you lose everything except one of the eyes. It may be purely a personal preference (Not saying there is anything technicalyl wrong with the shots), But I think stepping back to f1.4 o f1.8 will show slightly more detail, and therefore yield a better shot overall.
