    This is a REVIEW of the Canon RF 135mm f1.8 IS. I also compare it to Sony’s 135mm f1.8 which was my favorite Sony G Master Lens. Regardless of which system you have, this is one focal length that EVERY SINGLE PRO must have in their bag. These lenses are some of the best that Canon and Sony make.

    I could somewhat justify spending on my RF 50 1.2 as I got it used for under $2000 and I can use it throughout an entire wedding. However $2000 for a 135mm which I might not always be able to use due to needing more room to work with just doesn’t seem like money as well spent.
    I still have the 135F2 which I use all the time, so until it kicks the bed, I shall carry on with it.

    • @nogerboher5266

      135mm is the third most used focal length in the fashion industry as well as portraiture and one of the top 5 most used focal lengths for events, journalism, weddings, sports, motorsports and much more.

      @@nogerboher5266 I’m not saying it’s not a useful focal length. I use it all the time when I can. However sometimes I just don’t have room to make use of it, so upgrading over my 135F2 doesn’t seem worth it.

    I love 85mm f1.4 from Sigma and 135mm f1.8 GM from Sony for street photography, I love the 135mm f1.8 for shooting during the day and the other for the night, both are a great couple, I bought the 50mm 1.2 GM from Sony before the 85mm and it did not give the results I was expecting according what I like to do (street photography including people for portraits), 85mm and 135mm just give me the distance and deep the field I need and more important consistent results for focusing moving subjects

    The EF 135mm is my favorite lens and is always on my camera. I preordered the RF version the first day it was announced without hesitation! As a prime shooter, I use the 135mm as my telephoto on wedding days instead of the 70-200.

    Jared, I love your content. I have loved my Canon EF 135 f/2.0 for years using it on my 5DMk3 and 4. I now use it on my Canon R5 and it's even better. Could you please do a video with a head to head comparison of both the EF 135 f/2.0 and the RF 135 f/1.8 and show the differences? I would love to save up for the RF 135 but if it's not a huge difference, I will pass and put that money on other gear or travel.

    Jared have you shot much video with the RF 135 1.8 yet? The Sony 135 1.8 is my favorite lens ever and leaving it behind was the reason I hesitated returning to Canon. I shoot a 50/50 mix of images and video, mostly in low light. I've been using the R3 for 11 months now and love it. IS was the only thing missing from the Sony 135. I'm stoked that the Canon looks like its sharp wide open, but would also love to see some low light action video shot on it too. Not that it matters I guess really - I put in a pre order the day it was announced! Cheers.

    HEY!
    The 100-500 serves its purpose. Not for everything, and definately not for indoors long range situations, that f7.1 is going to kill much of your photo's quality, no matter what camera you have.
    I use the 100-500 for the few sports events I have, but will invest in a 135 f1.8 to have more variety in my selections.

What setting do I need to use, see how his retinal goes to the multi point, then I sees the subject, and goes after it, mine. only auto focus I see on mine is the first option, after that you have to manually put it on the thing you want to focus on. and it says af unavailable in this setting.

      This is only available in R3 & R6 II but the R5 has a “hidden” mode you can enable that gets it close enough. Go into magenta AF menu #5 and select “Initial Servo AF Point for :)” and choose one of the first two options. That will then let you start out with a focus box to tell it where to start and then switch to Eye/Face AF automatically when face is detected. IMO this should have been default instead of “Auto” on the R5/R6

    7:20 what, you think a 100-500 isn't pro glass??? lol! I've been shooting 70-200/2.8+two TC's since like 1996 and the current 100-500 is every bit as pro. The 100-500 has a maximum aperture (not f-stop, I mean the entrance pupil here) of 70mm, more or less the same as the 135/1.8 with a nominal 75mm. So, the bokeh will be nearly the same amount, albeit in a more telephoto shot. The pro 100-500 user might just be 50% farther from the subject, have slightly less bokeh but be able to be substantially more selective about the background and thus get a FUNCTIONALLY equivalent shot. In other words any actual use you put the 135/1.8 shot to you could take a 100-500 shot that would meet the same goals about as well. Really, when you say stuff like this, I wonder whether you're even a photographer or just have an expensive hobby that you don't really understand completely.

    • @LtDeadeye
      @LtDeadeye ปีที่แล้ว

      All I know is that when I fill the frame with my 135 at f/1.8, the bokeh is creamier than filling the frame with my 100-400 at f/5.6 at 400mm.

  • @skyscraperfan
    @skyscraperfan ปีที่แล้ว

    It is only better, if you like bokeh. Otherwise the 70-200 f/4 will do the job.
    Personally I hate bokeh. I do not want to have 80 percent of my image blurry. I only use a lens wide open, if I do not have enough leight to stop down. So during daylight I would not use f/1.8 anyway. I would buy that lens for handheld night shots. f/1.8 combined with eight stops of IS are great.

    • @lsamoa
      @lsamoa ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have to agree. Too much bokeh / narrow depth of field chasing. It's hard enough getting enough things in focus at that focal length without pushing the aperture even more. Then you end up with a portrait like at 18:15 when only one person is in focus. That photo would have been much better with a wider deeper of field at aperture 4 or 5.6.

  • @nogerboher5266

    Yeah, that's a big no, no... The 135mm Zeiss Batis and the 135mm Sony GM are by far the best two modern day 135mm lenses you can buy across all systems. Putting aside idiotic things like pixel peeping shortcomings, corner sharpness or autofocus performance, the 135mm GM and Batis produce objectively the best looking images out of any modern autofocus 135mm lens ever made. (And the best 135mm lenses I have ever shot with, are the 1998 Leica APO Telyt 135mm and the 2012 Zeiss APO Sonnar 135mm. Unbeatable image quality out of these two lenses. Probably some of the best lenses ever made overall, not just in the 135mm focal range.)

    9:50 "I love the look you get from a 1.2 sometimes." You have no idea what you're talking about. The 85/1.2 has about a 72mm diameter entrance pupil. The 135/1.8 has about 75mm, basically about the same. At equal distances to subjects, were you to crop the 85 down to 135 field of view, you probably wouldn't be able to tell the two shots apart. In contrast a 50/1.2 only has a 42mm entrance pupil, so would look like a 85 stopped down to f/2 or the 135 stopped down to 3.2. There's no such thing as "the look from a 1.2." Actually Jared, if you have a Sony full frame body you now buy the lighter and cheaper Samyang AF 135mm f1.8 FE, not the overpriced Sony 135mm f1.8 GM, as the Samyang is a far better lens optically.
    In comparison, the Samyang is sharper, right across the frame, at any aperture, it has no CA or LoCA, even wide open (whereas the GM has to be stopped down to f5.6 to get rid of it's LoCA).
    It has perfect image quality at it's MFD wide open (Whereas again, the GM has to be stopped down to f5.6 to get good image quality at it's MFD).
    It is essentially distortion free and it has no vignetting, even wide open (Whereas the GM has pincushion distortion and noticeable vignetting wide open).
    It has much better flare resistance than the GM (the GM flares like a bitch!).
    The AF is just as fast, quiet and accurate as the GM, it has less focus breathing, and it's still razor sharp at f16 (Whereas the GM gets soft due to diffraction at f16).
    And after seeing the reviews for the new RF, I can tell you that while the RF is better than the GM, it's still not as good as the Samyang.
    The RF has to be stopped down to f2.8 to get rid of it's LoCA, it has to be stopped down to f4 to get good close up image quality at it's MFD, it has pincushion distortion, and it's about double the weight and it's about 3.5x more expensive!!!

    10:58 No, the "right exposure" doesn't necessarily freeze action. 1/100, ISO 100, f/16 would be a correct exposure but not freeze action. What freezes action is a suitably fast SHUTTER SPEED, whether the resulting exposure is under, over, or correctly exposed. Useless video for not contrasting with the EF 135/2 that is like 1/4 the price. The EF doesn't have IS but every shot you're taking is like 1/3200 ... as long as you have an IBIS body, you can be sure of at least three stops, getting you down to say 1/30th, and you don't want to go any slower due to subject motion anyway. So, IS in the RF 135mm is pretty pointless.

    • @lqr824
      @lqr824 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't see the point yet. The IS seems pointless: 135mm is a people lens and people move, so you have to shoot at least say 1/30th, and the IBIS bodies give you 1/30th for sure with the 135mm. And every shot he's got here is 1/3200 or something anyway. So is the bokeh actually better? Resolution? Color fringing?

    • @jan.tichavsky
      @jan.tichavsky ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The good old EF 135 is mainly cheap but on modern high resolution sensor you can see it's decades old design. Sharpness is good but not excellent, focus tracking is slower and contrast and night with bright light sources isn't that great either. For those the RF is worthy upgrade, for 8K video that needs fast AF it's a must have. For the rest the EF version is still good enough.

    Gotta dissent from your always deactivating the control ring on RF lenses. As an old film SLR shooter from 1968 to 2003, I love getting back an on-lens aperture ring. I set the main dial to control shutter speed like the old top of the camera dial for that and the rear dial for ISO. Shooting RAW in Manual exposure with the three color histogram in the EVF (more informative than a match needle), I'm home! I had gone to Live View on my 70D and 80D to get the accuracy of dual-pixel AF, but I'm back to viewfinder shooting with my R7 - which is actually smaller than my old Canon FT but so much more capable than the 80D it replaced.

  • @lqr824
    @lqr824 ปีที่แล้ว

    9:50 "I love the look you get from a 1.2 sometimes you just want to obliterate the background" ???? I don't think you know where bokeh comes from. It doesn't come from f-stop, it comes from aperture. The 85/1.2 has a 72mm aperture. The 135/1.8 is like 75mm. That's the same aperture, given the fact that lens specs are nominal not actual anyway.
    OK, go take the 85/1.2 and 135/1.8 shots from a tripod then compare them. The 135 shot is higher magnification of course, but if you crop the 85 to that you will find out the bokeh is just about IDENTICAL. 85/1.2 doesn't obliterate the background any more than 135/1.8, it obliterates "only" the same amount. It just does it in a wider shot.
    I cannot believe you're out making camera videos and don't even know this. There are probably people watching your video and taking your mistakes as bible. You are literally making some portion of your audience stupider with this disinformation.

    A+ as usual. My EF 135/2 bought used was a steal. With R6's IS I don't need IS in the lens. In any case, I can shoot at 1/500-plus for indoor stage events, and the near-unbelievable image quality lets me crop deeply, similar to what you demo'd with the 135/1.8, effectively giving me a 400mm f/2. Bonus: it has a magical ability to bring out the humanity in images of human faces. Just sayin'. (Age 80, 56 years in photography.)
