Hiromi - Voice - The Trio Project Featuring Anthony Jackson & Simon Phillips

  • Pianist and composer Hiromi Uehara, whose passionate and incendiary keyboard work has been a shining light on the jazz landscape since her 2003 debut, believes that the voice that never speaks can sometimes be the most powerful of all.
Her newest release, a nine-song trio recording simply titled Voice, expresses a range of human emotions without the aid of a single lyric.
"When I play music, I realize that it really filters emotions," says Hiromi. "I called this album Voice because I believe that people's real voices are expressed in their emotions. It's not something that you really say. It's more something that you have in your heart. Maybe it's something you haven't said yet. Maybe you're never going to say it. But it's your true voice. Instrumental music is very similar. We don't have any words or any lyrics to go with it. It's the true voice that we don't really put into words, but we feel it when it's real."

similar thing happened to me... someone sent me a youtube link, I was blown away, looked her up, and found she was playing at Yoshi's in Oakland 3 days later... including a Sunday afternoon for $15... ARE YOU KIDDING? F*K YEAH we're going...
Couldn't believe my eyes/ears... Simon Phillips alone was worth the price, but Hiromi's playing and spirit were just spectacular...

saw this trio live in SF a few weeks back. THREE GENIUS MUSICIANS... no words capture what I saw that evening... Simon Phillips, by himself, it's like watching a magic trick; how can one guy play like that? Anthony Jackson, one of the greatest, says that Hiromi is one of THE GREATEST artists to ever sit behind the piano... he would know... and she NEVER LETS UP! amazing phrase after phrase, this might have been the highest level of playing I've ever seen... GO SEE THEM LIVE!

Just saw her live at the Jazzfest for the 1st time and she was w/ this band. DEAR LORD! It literally brought me to tears. Hiromi is a FORCE, and this band (and Simon's rock influence) really brings out her boundless energy. If you see her live, it's an experience unlike any other.

  • @tombone63

She is one of the foremost cutting-edge musicians in the world right now, yet she is so sweet and un-assuming. I have seen her four times now and met her twice while buying her CD's. She also walked by me and said a few things to me as I got seated at Yoshi's in Oakland. That only confirmed to me that the most highly developed individuals are often the most humble. All this is costs about the same to see her as it does for a large pizza. The world is upside-down.

She's a marvelous performer, especially the solo concerts, which I've been dying to see in real life (only have seen video). Hmm, the Phoenix one was February 18 I thought, so about a month ago (when you posted). Maybe she was in Rome just before? What a long bit of traveling!
I'm seeing her this week w/ the Trio in Seattle. The thing I like best about her is that she's very humble and appreciative despite her talent. Rare....

@thebasicguide haha I obviously watched the video. I asked because she didn't really say why she DIDN'T choose them when she wanted to return to the trio, and I was just curious. I guess it is nice to play with many different musicians, though. I've since listened to the album and it is AWESOME, but I gotta say, I still like the way she meshes with Valihora better! Maybe I just have more invested in those older songs because I've heard them more haha.

@Dooality & she loves & plays fusion & prog-rock much more than straight Jazz. People have been maligning prog-rock & Jazz-Fusion for decades but all-of-a-sudden as soon as Hiromi comes out & starts playing it, now it all becomes Jazz? Naw, it's still prog-rock & fusion, just played on the same level of talent as John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Tony Banks, Joe Zawinul, Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman & all those legends of old. Also it doesn't hurt that she's cute which makes her very marketable.

It's funny , she looks like Bjork... if Bjork was Japanese. This woman is the total package. high musical intelligence ,tech ,mprov, skills, speed , stage presents and beauty. Listening to her is not just ear experience but a physical one. My body fills with such energy experiencing her sound. It's almost sexual as the music passes through you. When I'm done listening to her I fell like I need a cigarette. She is the Yngwie J. Malmsteen of piano but better.
