  • Hello! Thanks for joining me as I learn how to sew from scratch. As a beginner sewist, I thought it'd be fun to share my journey and encourage folks to get into things they've always wanted to learn how to do. Sewing isn't impossible (or as hard as it seams? ..dad jokes going hard). Let's fail and get those tiny w's together.
The thumbnail may be giving a little graphic design is my passion, but happy you found me. Some information you might want to know:
I'm sewing on a Singer 4432 heavy duty machine. I paid $199 for the Singer which is the best sale I could find. I'm using quilting cotton from Joann which is a great fabric for starting out -- wait for a good sale or coupon, $2.99 - $3.99 is around where you'd want to pay if you're buying new fabric from the store.
Some videos I found helpful in getting started:

I'll have some more sewing videos coming up and will branch out to whatever else I'm wanting to learn. Don't be afraid to say hello in the comments and let me know what you're working on. :)

Hi, hint to stop the bird nesting, (no matter what the instructions say or anyone tells you), hold both threads to the back of the machine, under the presser foot until you have a few stitches. Another hint is to start past the fabric edge and the back stitch. Good luck with your projects. 😊

Thank you, I hadn’t yet heard about either of those before your comment! I appreciate it. :)

Sometimes when it seems like there is too many threads coming out adjusting the needle all the way to the up position solves the problem.

Congrats on starting to sew! I've been sewing for a few years now, and for ironing tips off the top of my head: I iron on the wrong side of the fabric, I've accidentally burnt fabric a little a few times and it's not as noticable. And if you have some really stubborn wrinkles, spray them with water a bit and give it a few minutes, 5min is probably more than enough, then try ironing again. It helps relax the wrinkles (because science?)

Magnetic seam guides are amazing for keeping your stitching straight. I love mine. I've been sewing for 15 years now and still use my magnetic seam guide from time to time.

I’ve never heard of these - going to do some research now! Thank you. :)

When the needle is completely at the top of the machine, there will be only 2 threads, usually. The thread forms a loop under there which creates the stitch, so halfway through the stitch cycle you should see 3 threads. It does that for every stitch.
I was wondering when you would realise the wrong sides were together, not the right sides.
I am watching this after watching your 2nd video. Great job for both your first rice bags. No one cares about it not beinbg perfect. It works. It serves its purpose. Nobody is perfect at the beginning of any journey. Well done!!

Hah, I had a feeling folks would pick up on the wrong sides before I did!

For other new sewists, IMHO find a vintage machine. A late 50s singer 500 or 503 rocketeer can be had for significantly under $100 and it will last forever. But that's the golden sewing era (50s and 60s) to look for. Also they're cool looking =p

I’m starting to get into the look of the older machines now that I’m learning more about it. When we moved into our house there was a Singer from maybe the 40’s left behind. Might need to clean it up and give it a whirl.

It's super fun to rehab then too, complicated enough to make me feel mechanical, but simple enough so I didn't throw it down the stairs

Congrats on joining the sewing club!! You have my wish list machine! I’m going two years on a Brother cheap model. The first thing I ever tried was a stuffed animal from Animal Factory. It was very easy to read and put together. Good luck on your journey!

Happy to be a member! Almost pulled the trigger on a Brother machine after binging so many seasons of Project Runway. I hadn't even considered making a stuffed animal.. That sounds like a great idea. :)

Welcome to the sewing world. A little tip about cutting, always cut away from yourself. Can't wait to see more videos.

Ooh, I’ve been trying to work out whether to get exactly that model! (Settles down with coffee & bagel…)

I really like it! Some of it is the aesthetic, but it’s been reliable for everything I’ve done so far.

New to sewing here as well. Further along the journey but like you bought a machine before sewing know how. It is fun and possibly frustrating. The seam ripper is my friend, note: they can dull and don’t hang on to those. Starter projects? Eyeglass cases? Fabric coasters, I use cork? Fabric basket? Pillow covers, cases etc. Grocery totes and the like. Finally comfortable with stitching straight lines, top stitching too.
The sewing machine is a power tool. Sewing is a skill. An acquired skill. You have a good start. The video, camera angles, editing and shots are good. Watchable! No TH-cam music? Thankful for that. 🙏🏼

I appreciate that! It feels like we’re finally starting to get away from the over editing, attention economy type videos. Wanted to contribute to that.
Also I kind of want to use your examples as a checklist for my next projects, haha. I just might.

A side comment, the rice bag is something I haven't tried but use and buy similar. I have a new project idea on my list.
