Drafting a Bodice Block and Sewing a Muslin (Beginner Style)
The journey of a beginner sewist as he takes custom measurements, drafts a bodice block/men's sloper, and sews a muslin for future garment creation. He opted not to make sleeves because he didn't want to -- also (spoiler ahead) the next project is a vest. Why did I write my description in third person? No idea. It amused me. But hello there, anyhow!
Sewing on a Singer 4432 heavy duty machine in stylish black.
Muslin is Sew Essentials Muslin Fabric 36'' from Joann.
Other materials as needed:
- Flexible measuring tape.
- Sewing pins or clips.
- Two very interested cat assistants.
Thank you to Cornelius Quiring for his video "How to Draft a Shirt Pattern ... and Fix Fit Issues". Tremendous help found here: th-cam.com/video/WDFF6jT43-M/w-d-xo.html

Sewing a tool roll because I have so many notions

Hello! Thanks for joining me as I learn how to sew from scratch. As a beginner sewist, I thought it'd be fun to share my journey and encourage folks to get into things they've always wanted to learn how to do. Sewing isn't impossible (or as hard as it seams? ..dad jokes going hard). Let's fail and get those tiny w's together. The thumbnail may be giving a little graphic design is my passion, bu...

    Hi Cody. I'm glad you have success on your first try. Confidence means everything with a newly learned skill. You are doing well. Looking forward to your finished garment now. Now, with your two chosen fabrics, make sure you take note of any stretch in both fabrics. Make sure the stretch goes ACROSS YOUR BODY, not down your body. And being your first lined outfit, there are some tricky techniques to learn. I recommend you first try making an item with no sleeves to practice on. Maybe with some thinner cotton fabrics, you will need to line up seams together at shoulders and side seams. For the neat edges, you will need to sew the lining fabric and the outer fabric together, right or outsides together, then press your seams to one side, turn right sides out, flatten your seam edge and press seams. From then you sew that pattern piece as one. Of course, if you want your garment to be completely reversible, there are more techniques to learn and more excrutiating turning of fabric to right sides out. But don't tackle that yet.. Great work so far.

    Wow very impressive. To answer your question, you need to ask yourself about how your body will react to the fleece. Are you naturally cold or hot in nature and is your skin sensitive to certain materials. I would say it a personal choose and you would be the only one to answer your question. Can't wait to see what you choose. Have fun sewing🪡

    I don't want to be the insufferable know-it-all, but: it would have been easier to buy a commercial pattern, make a block then anything can be adapted. See the closet historian's youtube chanel to understand drafting concept. I would suggest readers digest complete guide to sewing. I believe the older versions are better than the new publication mmy copy is 46 years old in tatters and still used. I think it's great you are being so adventurous.

    When the needle is completely at the top of the machine, there will be only 2 threads, usually. The thread forms a loop under there which creates the stitch, so halfway through the stitch cycle you should see 3 threads. It does that for every stitch. I was wondering when you would realise the wrong sides were together, not the right sides. I am watching this after watching your 2nd video. Great job for both your first rice bags. No one cares about it not beinbg perfect. It works. It serves its purpose. Nobody is perfect at the beginning of any journey. Well done!!

  • @MyDjturner

    When you have two different weights/thickness' of fabric like that, it is best practice to pin through the layers, For example, on your little test square, pin in the centre, then close enough to each edge but allowing the machine foot plenty of room to pass by. This will prevent puckering and slippage. Also, good practice to start sewing with a couple of stitches forward, then reverse stitch a couple of stitches then continue forward. When you reach the end of your sewing, reverse sew a couple of stitches again. It prevents the stitches coming loose with use or moving it around while creating. To ensure your stitches/seams meet, keep the edge of the fabric at the same distance from the foot. There is a tool, a strong magnet that sits on your machine next to your foot on the right of it, that will keep the edge of the fabric at the same even space from the sewn stitches, which will help your corners meet neatly. 1 big serious tip using rotary cutters...ALWAYS cut away from you not towards you. So glad you found the Zen. Again, with rolling the width of the roll, use pins to hold the fabrics in place so they don't move placing the pins top to bottom through all layers, between all lines, then roll the item after sewing each line as tightly as you can. With practice you will get used to doing this so that you feel comfortable with. You can lay your scissors on top of the roll. It adds a bit of weight to prevent the fabric unrolling while you sew. Adjust the roll after each line of sewing. CONGRATULATIONS. It looks good, does what it's supposed to do and who cares if it looks a liitle scrappy on the ties. Personally, I would put the scissors in the pocket upside down and the rotary cutter upside down to the way you have them. Less movement and fallout. Great job for your first large item. This is the first time I have watched your channel. I have taught how to sew for years as well as created my own designs. I hope you don't mind my comments. Purely to help you and save you from injuring yourself. lol. See you next time. Fun.

      I don’t mind the comments at all, thank you so much! Not many folks in my life sew - and my mom used to but has greatly slowed down as she’s gotten older - so I missed the window to pick up the teachings from her. Going to review your tips before I start the next project. Again, thank you so much! I love the shared wisdom I’ve gotten from the sewing community so far. 😊

    Greate job! Your best friend in sewing is ironing. It's super boring but pressing seams makes all the diffrence! You also erase the bunching from fitting it in the machine that way. But to not destroy your fabric, first iron a test piece starting with a low temp to see how much it can take.

  • @blueberry_lemon
    @blueberry_lemon 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Congrats on starting to sew! I've been sewing for a few years now, and for ironing tips off the top of my head: I iron on the wrong side of the fabric, I've accidentally burnt fabric a little a few times and it's not as noticable. And if you have some really stubborn wrinkles, spray them with water a bit and give it a few minutes, 5min is probably more than enough, then try ironing again. It helps relax the wrinkles (because science?)

    For other new sewists, IMHO find a vintage machine. A late 50s singer 500 or 503 rocketeer can be had for significantly under $100 and it will last forever. But that's the golden sewing era (50s and 60s) to look for. Also they're cool looking =p

      @CodyLearnsThings 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m starting to get into the look of the older machines now that I’m learning more about it. When we moved into our house there was a Singer from maybe the 40’s left behind. Might need to clean it up and give it a whirl.

    New to sewing here as well. Further along the journey but like you bought a machine before sewing know how. It is fun and possibly frustrating. The seam ripper is my friend, note: they can dull and don’t hang on to those. Starter projects? Eyeglass cases? Fabric coasters, I use cork? Fabric basket? Pillow covers, cases etc. Grocery totes and the like. Finally comfortable with stitching straight lines, top stitching too. The sewing machine is a power tool. Sewing is a skill. An acquired skill. You have a good start. The video, camera angles, editing and shots are good. Watchable! No TH-cam music? Thankful for that. 🙏🏼

    Hi, hint to stop the bird nesting, (no matter what the instructions say or anyone tells you), hold both threads to the back of the machine, under the presser foot until you have a few stitches. Another hint is to start past the fabric edge and the back stitch. Good luck with your projects. 😊
