She's not bitter, she's angry. He treated her like sh*t and he ought to know how she feels whether he wants to or not. The difference between Carly Simon's 'You're So Vain', which Alanis says is a song she wished she'd written, and this is that Carly plunged the knife and twisted it. Alanis keeps stabbing. Bless her.

Bob Saget outed Dave Coullier on this one cause he said he was AT that dinner when she called.
And Mr Boyd, she was a KID. She was a teenager with a much older man and had already been in the business since she was a child and had been taken advantage of at every turn. She had A LOT of demons to expel when she wrote this whole album.

Come on Boyd... I refuse to believe you've never been angry at an ex who'd moved on before you'd even gotten over her.
I'd say we ALL have at some point. Which is the reason this song resonated with so many people.

I like this guy, but that was a lot of opinion for a guy who knew nothing about the situation. That kind of assuming is what does a lot of damage in this world. Besides, it's a curious notion that a woman who was treated very poorly in a very public way is somehow dangerous or mentally disturbed, rather than justified in feeling valid and immediate anger. He was just exhibiting discomfort with her angry expression of it and blamed that on her. (It's art Boyd.) Some people just state promises when it's convenient. They often end up hurting the sorts of people who exhibit the character necessary to make real ones.

I get where you're coming from, LBoyd, but just make sure you can still recognize great art when you see it. Also, this was the 90s. Women taking power back, owning their own sexuality, and having a strong voice that they used? It wasn't as common in the U.S. at that time as we might like to think. Remember, it wasn't until 1974 (!!) that the ECOA made it so women could get their own credit cards (i.e. it became illegal for banks to discriminate against women by refusing to give them a credit card based on gender alone, or gender + marital status). Alanis Morissette is a fucking ICON.

In reality, she has said it could be about any of about six different guys she had broken up with. Dave Coulier is the only person that has been hugely vocal about it absolutely being him (and strangely one denial that it's him - publicity seeking much?). She denied that it was specifically about Coulier in the documentary Jagged.
My guess is that it is an amalgamation of relationship experiences to create a story of breakup and heart break.

I love her when she is in her more hard, aggressive mode of music like this. She was female '90s angst. Men had plenty of representation, but she WAS the female representation. The follow up album didn't get nearly enough credit - constantly listed as either her best or worst depending on what you look for in her music. I loved it. Especially the song Would Not Come, Can't Not, and I Was Hoping. Watching her head bang to Can't Not when she plays it live is a thing of beauty!

Alanis Morissette, Canadian singer from the 90s. She incapsulated in that debut song off her first album. Young women's rage at being dumped and became an overnight. Boyd, you must surely be younger than you look! One couldn't have been around in 1995 and not have heard this; next you will say you never heard Boyz II Men, lol! 🙂
Did you know they performed the theme to Different Strokes for a event with Jimmy Kimmel called Live in Front of a Studio Audience? It was good 🙂
But yeah, I love Alanis. I have like 10 of her albums. I graduated in 1996 and my friend played this CD in his car when it came out, and I've been listening to her ever since. I have only seen her live once, though....I flew from San Francisco to Las Vegas to see her live at the T-Mobile Arena. It was amazing. The way she performs "Uninvited" live is pretty great, they put a strobe light on her and she does a crazy headbang dance! 😀
Are you going to go watch her live? She is playing in Texas on the 14th.
Also there is a musical play based on her music that's on tour. The play is really great and the main character is a bisexual African-American high school senior. 🙂

Its a lyrical snapshot of an emotion. She's pissed, and thats fine. I hear this song as being right at that moment. If she is saying/feeling this 16 months later, then she has a problem. But she is quite justified to feel and express this. Rarely expressed in art, glad to have it.
Alanis Morissette has the single sexiest line in music that I know (a different song)
"I was wrong, and I'm sorry." Would be great if we all could say that when we needed to.

This was based on her dating that stooge Dave Coulier from Full House when she was 18 and he was 33. He knew her family so I think she was taken advantage of because she was young and naive. Some rumors have it that she may have been 16.
Until this day, she's never disclosed who it was that dumped her. That's just the kind of gal she is and there's nothing wrong with being mad. She slayed with this. It's a masterpiece that paved the way for more women to be able to rock out and express themselves via music.
Please don't infer that she's a psycho. The woman is an icon and still selling out concerts to this day. She's not nasty. She's a MEGA rocker known all over the world.

    Flea on base
    Taylor Hawkins on drums
    The studio version is HARD

Actually in the studio version it’s programmed drums. Taylor just played during tours. But wasn’t on any recorded material.
Flea and Dave Navarro however are on the studio version.

I loved her and had such a crush on her as a teenager. I listened to 'Ironic' all summer long when I first heard her. The song, strangely enough, has no examples of irony in it... how ironic, wouldn't you say?
But as a young man with a crush, I was counting down through the '21 things I want in a lover' to see how many I matched up with. No chance, since I lived in the south and she's Canadian, but a teenager can dream, can't he?
(post script: "Ooo. Went back and listened again real quick, now that I'm older, with more life experience. I'm up to 19 out of 21! Alanis, give me a call if you find yourself in the south!")

As a male, I'm likely not supposed to like this song, but it is the lyrical equivalent of bringing a knife to a bazooka fight.

This is one of the top five breakup songs of all time.
Number one breakup song is "All Cried Out," either version with Full Force. Although I think Tisha Campbell did a better job than Lisa Lisa.

Shit.... you're going way back...nobody knows who Tisha Campbell or Lisa Lisa is. and full force even less people know therm. Got too say i didn't know Tisha did all cried out. I remember full force because i was a huge fan of a rap group called U.T.F.O, full force was their and many other artists producers, as well as doing their own music. thank you for reminding me, going to spend the day listening to my 80's favs

This song was about her Ex Dave Coulier who played an uncle on Full House! He dumped her hard so she wrote this!
