Stopping till the point of stillness, requires at least 50% not doing. It's when you realize that nothing is really happening and you can relax and build strength for when you need it. Such a wise choice, going to India. At such a young age to make that decision. That's probably why she can still make a decent living through live performances. She's taking care of herself. Right on!
Brad nailed it. Awesome! She did go to India, she did do all those things he said. He's got the lyrics, great job. This is one of my all-time favorite songs of any genre. I was worried that watching the video was going to detract from the song and the lyrics cuz other reactions I've seen all people do is keep saying she's naked she's naked. Good to see you guys are mature enough to not let it make you miss out on a great song and a great video.
She became a kind of a self-righteous hippie, which is a bummer having enjoyed her music when her anger and disillusionment was the soul of it. Hope she found her peace, though!
@@svenpoletka5236 She didn't lose her musical talent, it was just her style that changed. If anything, her vocals became more complex and powerful after Jagged Little Pill came out. Thank you and Uninvited are two songs that demonstrate her growth in vocal skill.
I think this is a song about coming off the road for jagged little pill tour and being so disillusioned with the industry it was affecting her health hence the opening line. She went to India for a spiritual retreat to get her mental and physical health back in order.
I really think the magic of this album is that you're listening to a young woman that has fully accepted her thoughts, emotions, and most importantly herself. To accept your emotions whether good or bad is a realization saved for middle age adults. It's quite fascinating to see someone put down in lyrics this life transition. For one to accept their faults, insecurities, perception of self is really rare. It's a very open and honest album and it's one of the reasons it was so successful. Most people can spot fakeness. Alanis is not fake.
She went to India after her inital worldwide success to take a break and find herself. Shes thanking India and exposing her emotions to push her forward in being vulnerable and open.
Lex, your infatuation with Alanis is super endearing! You got it, this song is about appreciating frailty and vulnerability and knowing that those are things that make us who we are! Great job guys!
I think this was the first single off her follow up album to the smash hit album "Jagged Little Pill". If I remember correctly, after she became a superstar, she took a trip to India to kind of "decompress" or whatever. So, Brad, I think you are right about that. And, yes, Alanis is amazing!
...I had a bit of an infatuation with Alanis back when this came out....I would listen to it and weep, I so hated getting older...and I was younger then than now..I have come to terms.
This was the first release of the album that followed Jagged Little Pill. She took time off after the JLP tour and went to India to study Buddhism and Hinduism and came back with a much different feel to her music. Instead of anger and angst, it was full of hope and forgiveness and a hippy vibe. Her thank you to India was for giving her a different introspective.
Which for my money is a better album than her first. Mind you, her first album is huge... Her 2nd Album is still on my phone...still listen to it time and again

I like all of her songs, the video for You Learn is my favorite and my favorite song from Jagged Little Pill album. Interesting reaction her nickname was Alanis So Upset , LOL ✌️
33 MILLION Jagged Little Pill was a worldwide commercial success, topping the charts in thirteen countries. With sales of over 33 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling albums of all time and made Morissette the first Canadian to achieve double diamond sales
I’ve always liked Alanis, but would never put her on my favorites lists. Having said this she is absolutely brilliant and I got the opportunity to see her a few years back at one of the casino’s in Connecticut. She was awesome. She sang her ass off, her band was packed with top notch musicianship, and she told a lot of anecdotes that told pieces of her story in a way that made her totally relatable. Also, she was the perfect choice to play God at the end of Dogma.
As amazing as she is, I still feel she's underappreciated. That voice is so pure and perfect. "Thank you, thank you silence" is the best part of the song!
that noise you are referring to is usually called a "vocal break" often used in yodelling..... it is a quick transition from one vocal register to another.
Hello from Canada!! Just for fun, you should check out her earlier stuff - I remember one "hit" called Too Hot from 1991. It was a dancey type song, before she really came into her own and found her signature sound. Way different than what you have seen so far. She became her true artist self when she released Jagged Little Pill in my opinion.
Brad, you nailed it. I lived in India for a few years and studied yoga and meditation. Where I was taught, an ashram ,that focused on losing your ego as Alanis demonstrates in the video. No makeup,no cloths and no ego. Alanis reserved the whole compound where I stayed, for her and friends who came with her. India is a county you need to experience by living in it and not read about it. By the time I arrived Alanis had left the ashram. It was kind of cool to know that she had stayed there.
I'm sure someone already explained but she is talking about all things,. good and bad that has made her who she is. For instance,. she had an inspiring trip to India,. then,. in the same line she is thanking 'terror' for some hard realities she evidently had to face? This is simply what I have found out doing research upon taking this trip with AM with you guys. My room mate use to listen to her but me being a 'metal head',. I never did. I am opening up my musical genre range in my old age,. glad I am. Along with Tatiana from Jinger, she is now one of my fav female vocalist just because of the uniqueness of her voice,. THANK YOU Brad and Lex for taking this journey with me and discovering artist that I would have never listened to otherwise. LEX I just heard you saying that you like the way she moves her mouth while she sings! I NOTICED and agree! I believe that helps her with the uniqueness of her voice in pronunciations and different pitch, etc. Regardless I find it to be a cool trait and is adorable.
This is true talent. Thanks Alanis Morissette 🙏. A gift to let everyone know that everyone is brilliant. Rare and I'll say needed. Great guess Brad in my opinion your spot on. Look at you go brother.😁 If I was asked is there a reason for whatever I'd have to say yes now. Cheers Brad and Lex 👍
I think it's as simple as her thanking the experiences and emotions that have made her who she is. I see it as an acceptance of trauma and choosing to own it instead of letting it continue to traumatize.
this is a beautiful song, very emotional for me. I appreciate how she just lays it all out there, for herself. Wish i could do the same, and maybe will do when i get the same courage as alanis. one of my favorites, EVER!
It is funny to watch Brad's face during Alanis reactions. Normally he is very analytic so you can see the deep thought on his face. Though when watching Alanis she causes him to randomly smile. As others stated she is actually wearing a nude colored body suit.
I saw her last fall, this was the final encore song (I’d been waiting for all night)-I was a bit tipsy by then, but I pulled myself together long enough to etch that onto my brain, hopefully forever!
She's giving thanks to all the things she's experienced in life, like when she went to india to pay homage, it affected her soul. Its a truly beautiful song.. Love your Reactions! You two Rawk❣️
The song highlights all that is bad in the world for us to be thankful for the positive things in our lives. Alanis sought enlightenment from yoga, meditation and a trip to India. Its a song of atonement and renewed perspective.
Just watched some of your reactions to Alanis, thanks very much! I was one of the listeners back when who were grabbed by her first album. Like with many artist it's hard to follow up, when you're "praised into heaven", as they say in Dutch. Everyone has their own favorite songs from that first album: to me the most precious one was "Mary Jane"; another one which is not played enough is "Right though you". It would be great if you would react to those songs. Warm regards from the Netherlands!
Brad you NAILED IT. Alanis suffered from deep depression in her early years. She went on a spiritual trip to India to find herself and to heal mentally. She wrote "Thank you" as a thank you to all of the things, place, and people that helped take her pain away. Alanis is a practicing Buddhist.
Bread nailed it. And she will always have those Irish keening vocalisms as part of her singing which makes it interesting but I love how she can totally wail and yet it's still pure and clear.. I've heard this song many times but I've never seen the video. And all I'm seeing is a really tiny thumbnail on my phone but I got the impression that it was supposed to be like a mask over herself like we so often wear but she's telling you what's real with the singing.
And when she started, no one thought she could be successful... she made herself without letting go to the establishment.. She's awesome for NOT giving up!
Great reaction as usual, I loved watching Brad put the pieces together and enjoy Alanis live! Alanis owned Canada for 2 summers! Jagged Little Pill was so epic in Canada, we all went on our Alanis phase of contempt. She caught us all off guard with her raw emotion. I love her music
You got it Brad, she's 'baring' her emotions, and reflecting on the circumstances that formed her. Try YOU LEARN from her Jagged Little Pill album (1995), just as good and better.
It's good to see you liking her. This song got so much radio play when I was in high school that I actually can't stand it lol. But she's a phenomenal singer! I loved her Jagged Little Pill album. You should react to "Rivers and Roads" by the Head and the Heart and pull up a lyrical video of it. I've never known anyone who didn't love that song. I think you'd love it.
Bang on, Brad. Got the lyrics in one. Introspection, meditation, contemplation. Forgive yourself, forgive someone else. All that emotional baggage just weighs on the soul. Along the journey you can find yourself again.
She probably visited India and saw the poverty. Thank you India, thank you terror, thank you disillusionment. She learns from negative feelings. And how to turn it around. She has other songs with that same theme. I think Brad nailed it.
She’s always great! Can you do a song from my favourite female singer+band? They’re called Florence + The Machine. And one of The most EPIC live bands in the last years. Great song (to start with 😉) would be Dog Days Are Over. Greets!
Michelle Shocked sang a Song called Anchorage. She (to me) was like an earlier version of Alanis Morrisette. Have a go with Anchorage....its a great track.
Facts! Alanis wrote this song after spending 1 1/2 years in India. After she blew up here in the states she was really overwhelmed with the fame, feelings of loss, how the business treated her, how she was disillusioned with what fame brought her and stuff so she took a sabbatical. Because of this she wrote this to thank India for the experience that put her career life back onto a more focused track. She's also thanking the feelings and experiences she was dealing with. For without them she would not have grown as a person. It's an awesome song. Btw. She used to be a pop singer in Canada before changing genres and then blowing up worldwide.
Love the deep thoughts by Brad. Awesome interpretation. Many people did not like Alanis back in the day despite her amazing voice and creativity. I guess they didn't like her honesty. Not sure.
I bought Jagged Little Pill when it came out, I was in high school. Great album, but “Ironic” was played everywhere to no end. I got really sick of it and didn’t pay attention to much she did afterwards. A few years ago I was going through a pretty rough period in my personal life. I heard this song and just lost it. I ended up listening to it on repeat and crying my eyes out. It has deeply spiritual meaning to me, as I’m sure it does for Alanis. I’ve really found a new appreciation for her as an artist and a human.
I love how Lex gets the vibe right off the bat (no matter the words...) Brad needs a moment to put it all together, ( but when he does, it's super sweet
I can't speak to Alanis's childhood, but I do know she was involved in show biz from a young age and had a teenage dance-pop kinda album that didn't do well. I can't imagine either experience would've helped with the insane success of JLP, which itself is quite an expression of rage and cynicism and, to some degree, depression (brutal breakup behind all that, too). That sort of thing can really mess a young person up, as we've seen much too often. That she managed to find what appears to be at least some healthy serenity and peace, that then enabled her further tremendous artistic development, is all too rare of an occurrence, and one I think we're all glad she achieved, whether you're a fan of her work or not.
Alanis Morissette-Right Through You All I Really Want-Alanis Morissette Alanis Morissette-You Learn Alanis Morissette-Everything Alanis Morissette-Precious Illusions Alanis Morrisette-Your House Acapella
I think she's thanking things that have made her grow. When she's saying thank you terror, I think she means fear, things that torment her, not a terror attack. Thanking India, is probably because she went there, and it helped her evolve somehow.
Brad, Your enjoyment of this woman's talents is a reminder that we are all the same when it all boils down to discovering/ enjoying pure genius. Coming from a man that has used music to cope with many personal issues and set backs over the last 52 years I say a huge THANK YOU! love to you both
Ah... Alanis' enlightenment. Thank You for the bad things, as they make the good things be appreciated even more. Live your life in happiness no matter all the things you and the world encounter.
YES!!! Vulnerability! It is baring her soul. I take the nakedness to be a metaphorical nod to getting fully in touch with the raw you. It is exactly what you said.
I love how Brad's face lights up when he hears her voice, but you can see his it in his face he is trying to figure out what her lyrics are about! You guys are the best! You are sooo honest!
Omg, I'm so proud of Brad!!! It started with the love of her voice but he's really *getting* Alanis! Love you too, Lex! You guys should definitely listen to Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, the album this was on, whether as a reaction or on your own. As a full album, it's still my favorite by her.

this is a beautiful song, very emotional for me.
So love her. Since day one. And Brad always gets that grin with her
Be carful Lex I’m thinking Brad has a crush I feel that emotion 😍
Favorite.
Well Done Brad 👏 👏👏👏👏
Love Y'alls Reaction as usual ❤
Peace & Love ❤️
And when she started, no one thought she could be successful... she made herself without letting go to the establishment.. She's awesome for NOT giving up!
A mall singer...first bravo Alanis
.
Love this song
It's good to see you liking her. This song got so much radio play when I was in high school that I actually can't stand it lol. But she's a phenomenal singer! I loved her Jagged Little Pill album. You should react to "Rivers and Roads" by the Head and the Heart and pull up a lyrical video of it. I've never known anyone who didn't love that song. I think you'd love it.
Brad on the top of his game. Nice one
She is an Angel
Bang on, Brad. Got the lyrics in one.
Introspection, meditation, contemplation.
Forgive yourself, forgive someone else. All that emotional baggage just weighs on the soul.
Along the journey you can find yourself again.
“You learn” is a must
She probably visited India and saw the poverty. Thank you India, thank you terror, thank you disillusionment. She learns from negative feelings. And how to turn it around. She has other songs with that same theme. I think Brad nailed it.
It had little or nothing to do with poverty. She became a Buddhist there. It's pretty clearly referenced in the song's final verse.
She’s always great!
Can you do a song from my favourite female singer+band? They’re called Florence + The Machine. And one of The most EPIC live bands in the last years. Great song (to start with 😉) would be Dog Days Are Over.
Greets!
I really LOVE Florence + The Machine's acoustic version of Cosmic Love.
Yes please! I love them. Shake It Out is also amazing.
On yeah, they should definitely do Florence & The Machine. Fantastic voice.
Ooh yes, they would love Florence's voice, Brad especially!
Michelle Shocked sang a Song called Anchorage. She (to me) was like an earlier version of Alanis Morrisette. Have a go with Anchorage....its a great track.
"Unsent" is my favorite Alanis song, gives me shivers every single time
Today we watch Brad fanboying again over Alanis and Lex eyeing his reactions to see if he's not enjoying himself too much. 😂
Love Alanis!! The whole Jagged Little Pill album is 🔥. Not one bad song on it. So good. Great reaction!! 🙂
I think this song was off the follow up album! Not 100% sure though!
@@phatphat7089 It was. It was from "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie".
@@phatphat7089 You're right, it absolutely is. I just like the JLP album the best, lol.
Brad knows exactly where she came from!
I love how Lex gets the vibe right off the bat (no matter the words...) Brad needs a moment to put it all together, ( but when he does, it's super sweet
One of my favorite Alanis songs. Please react to Hands Clean and Head Over Feet ❤
Brad! You got it!!!
Well we all know who Brad has a crush on lol. I’ve never seen him this excited watching an artist before 😆
Brad’s smile is priceless. This song gives me the chills every time. She is awesome . Thank you Canada for all the artists you’ve shared
Brad nailed it! Love this song
Her phrasing is so unique it’s phenomenal.
Alanis was and is such a beautiful soul. She was what coming of age in the 90's was all about
I think she's thanking things that have made her grow. When she's saying thank you terror, I think she means fear, things that torment her, not a terror attack. Thanking India, is probably because she went there, and it helped her evolve somehow.
A really beautiful voice on a really beautiful lady,
Brad,
Your enjoyment of this woman's talents is a reminder that we are all the same when it all boils down to discovering/ enjoying pure genius. Coming from a man that has used music to cope with many personal issues and set backs over the last 52 years I say a huge THANK YOU! love to you both
Brad! Cover your eyes man! 😂
From 1st grade till now 34 y/o and still crushing on Alanis. The way she throws her voice around and facial movement singing is such beautiful thing.
Next song from Alanis Morissette - That I Would Be Good (Live) :)
Brad, you get her.
Brad certainly loves AM. She wrote the song while visiting India in '97. Keep the reactions coming guys.
This song gives me chills
