MaoMao is my favorite detective who’s not a detective. She’s so deadpan and single-minded. Been reading it since the web novel so I’m interested in seeing the light novel changes
Maomao's unironically one of the most fun characters to watch I've seen in a good while... In only one episode too it's like "Oh, this one's built different."
So, this happened in history a lot. Not just the Japanese and Chinese, but with high class ladies in Europe. One of the most famous is Queen Elizabeth (the queen of England that had the red hair and pale face). The cause is they use to mix lead and sometimes mercury into makeup. Since it messes with the blood flow, it makes the skin ghostly white, but slowly poisons the user. The worst part is that it damages the skin, so you have to use more to cover it up. And, it does lead to death or makes the body weak enough that something else kills you off.

I never liked Frieren since I read the manga back in the days of old mangadex and hated the way it was written and direction it took later on, but AD I loved teh hell out of. Started with the Maomao Notes without knowing about the other adaptation, then got into webnovel on Creative Novel, when it got licensed started reading the LN and only after that found out about the manga adaptation that is used as a base for this anime.

Those who are well off had access to "high quality whitening powder" which can give you that pale skin look, but is usually lead-based and thus deadly poisonous.

They’d get rid of the kidnappers that brought her in (especially since it means they won’t have to pay them anymore), but they’re not just going to let a prize like her get away. A highly skilled apothecary is worth three times their weight in gold in that day and age, and Jinshin, I think his name is, is way too intelligent to not know Maomao’s value.

Great show! Absolutely the one I look forward to the most this season! Maomao is just great. Also, someone probably pointed it out already, but Maomao is an adult. Well, 17 at the start of the anime. And Jinshi (purple hair dude) isn't that old. Though there are like, 3-4 versions of this story in LN and manga forms, and the exact ages shift from one or two years between versions.
This one of those hidden gem that at first it looks not so great but its actually hilarious, for sure one of the most entertaining anime's of the year.
One thing that you need to realise with this is that even if you, in a harem, is not employed specifically to be the emperor's concubine, if he sees you and he wishes, even if just for 30 minutes, you are available to him or you die. Like. There is no compromise. All the women in that area are at the emperor's disposal because _he said so_ and it's got nothing to do with whichever position you supposedly actually holds. Wanting to keep a low profile is definitely smart for more reasons than one. If it were me I'd probably just stop bathing. Rather be disgusting and alone, tbh. Ugh.

So a lady-in-waiting would NOT be of interest to the Emperor. The concubines are actually nobility from other regions IIRC. So only they have the potential to produce heirs for the Emperor's lineage. Ladies-in-waiting are merely attendants to the Concubines.
