As much as I love JinMao, it's really important to remember that Jinshi has hopes and dreams and wants OUTSIDE of Maomao. He is a well written character and he does not only exists to be the "simp". His desire to be free of the role as the heir has been there before Maomao came to his life. Her arrival only helped made his desire stronger
Of course! I love jinMao too but I ALSO love him for him, his character is written with such depth and his character development is one of my favorite parts of the LN!
I think Jinshi's arc is one of becoming less of a self-entitled prince to one who is able to communicate. He needs to ask her questions...like "Do you want to be my wife" instead of demanding, "You will be my wife." And I can't wait for that day. I love Jinshi.

the choke scene has so many panties in a twist,im surprised how many people didnt read the novel and the full context of that power move and many love to forget BOTH maomao and Jinshi have suffered many forms of attepts of SA,maomao has lerned from the burdel love/sex is money and Jinshi from the palace that is power,both face each other not knowing how to express themselves cause also they are both virgins,is a slow burn for them to first compromise,then acept and express their feelings to finally start to build they own version of what affection is and how to express it. people always claim for complex characters but then refuse to let them develop

You really should read to the end of the light novels that have been published. Their relationship changes as they mature, and I've heard that in Vol. 12, Maomao finally accepts Jinshi's feelings for her, and has some of her own. BTW, Jinshi is 19 at the start of the series, with "Jinshi" as his "eunuch" character, who is supposed to be 24. He is one year older than Maomao. I had not understood that Suiren was Ah Duo's mother! That explains a few things, but not all. I don't think, even by vol. 11, that Jinshi knows he is the emperor's son, nor does the emperor. Only Ainshi and Ah Duo do. But he is definitely attached to Ah Duo. He cries when she leaves partially because of how she just dismissed him after coming back from having a drink with Maomao, and partially because he is fond of her. But I wouldn't call him a crybaby. He rarely shows his emotions... when he silently cries on the bed after branding himself, Maomao assumes he is upset by how the Emperor reacted, but he's also in a LOT of pain that he's been concealing afterwards, and finally gets the chance to react when the emperor and Gyokuyou leave. The next translated light novel is Volume 12, which comes out October 14... I can't wait! I've read the books several times, as well as the manga, and the anime (if you have the Kindle app, you can save a little money on the digital versions). HUGE fan!!

In the beginning i thought Maomao was 18/19 and Jinshi 22 or something, but i've seen people saying they'd give him 30, so i can see why some people can be really unconfortable till we know the real ages, but we've had hints along the episodes that he's younger than he looks like. Also, considering the historical context, 23 years old man and 17 years girl don't bother me much, but of course it was a relief knowing the age gap is muuuch lower. Jinshi's harassing attitude seems to me more like a dumb young man than a sexual freak and i think this is very well developed, although there's no need to try to excuse his behaviour: it IS harassment indeed. Don’t y’all know something that Jinshi or Renshi in chinese mandarin translation is a gong zi meaning young master in chinese he is what you call a gong zi which is practically young handsome male nobleman which is a young master in most chinese period dramas as this anime is a homage to classic chinese period dramas just incase y’all foreigners know nothing about also chinese males are not all 5 feet 7 inches tall ok if you go to northern China especially in Beijing and even in northeast China chinese males are around 6 feet tall that’s a fact I think it’s ridiculous to say that Jinshi is taller than the average Chinese male as there’s many Chinese men who are 6 feet tall in height get it
