    In this video I have a 2008 6.4 Powerstroke that is smoking from the tailpipe profusely with the check engine lamp on. Cylinder 1 and 2 contribution/balance, and a p0302 cylinder 2 misfire. While cranking it over found uneven cranking so attempted to do a compression test but found a failure in the valve cover. Let's go check out what I found which is pretty common.

    Wish people would stop saying the 6.4 is a garbage engine. Yes between Ford and the government, they screwed the pooch with the emission system but we got that figured out we deleted it and put a tuner on it. Yes, you can screw it up by over-tuning it but just sensibly keep the tune down this engine will work its heart out and give you more. I think we have proved it's a 500+k engine with descent MPG properly tuned properly tuned you will get zero to very little black smoke on lift-off in stop-and-go traffic keep your services up and enjoy your 6.4's

      I get that completely. It's the whole design including the emissions system that makes it not great. I love in California so we cannot do that here. Thanks for watching. I appreciate the feedback.

    Thanks for making this video. I believe I have a failed rocker arm on my passenger side due to the regen issue. I run into where it kicks on when I am not in a place where traffic allows me to run it properly, I do when I can. I am looking into everything needed to do it myself, as I can't really afford a shop at this time. I am extremely thankful that you show removing what is in the way to get to the valve cover and how to replace that and bleed it as well. And a big thank you for showing part numbers. Sometimes that is the hardest part tracking those down.

    Great video! I had to do this on my 6.4 right after I bought it. It had 59k and was thumping through the air intake. The dealership had a warranty but reneged on it after they found out how much it was going to cost them. After talking to my wife I did it myself. I ordered the rocker arms and when the showed up I got started on the passenger side. When installing the new arms one of them was still really loose and when I removed it I discovered it was missing the ball bearing. Fearing it fell down into the motor I went searching with a magnet. After an hour I heard a click and instantly felt relived. I pulled out the magnetic pickup tool and the dang magnet was no longer on the other end!!!! I wanted to die!!! I ran to the parts store for another magnet and after searching for about two more hours I got the magnet back out. I was mentally exhausted and went to bed. The next day I kept searching for the ball bearing and never found it. I’m certain it was never there to begin with. I reused one of the old ones and never had any port problems. I do gotta say I am very disappointed with how cheaply manufactured the rocker arms are!!!
    Keep up the great informative videos!

      Well first I would like to say I am happy you had good luck fishing. So the main reason the rockers fall off is because this engine has early exhaust emissions. It has a DPF but no def fluid so the way it works is when it is wanting to regen it puts a message on the dash and while attempting to do the regen it turns on the fuel injectors with the exhaust valves open to dump fuel downstream to burn off the soot. Well truck owners do not allow the truck to regen properly so fuel gets dumped into the crank case, this dillutes the oil and that is what causes the rockers to wear. They are the weakest point. Thank you for watching and hit me up on instagram if you have any further questions.

    I bought my 6.4 a few months ago with 116k on the odometer. The dpf filter was already deleted. I deleted the EGR and added a tuner first thing. Then i cleaned out the fuel water separator, changed ALL the filters, and ALL the fluids. The previous owner had records of all the oil changes before i got the truck. I now run Rotella T6 with Archoil 9100 in the engine and Hot Shots EDT in the diesel.
    I think I've mitigated most of any potential issues the best i can. The idea of a rocker failure still worries me, though.

      I have been using lucas oil stabilizer in mine to keep them lubed up. 175k runs great.

      Very nice to have that set up. I would be as well however if you want to be preemptive then replace them to prevent them failing when it is not a good time. Thanks for watching.

    I've had this happen twice In my dad's 08' coincidently both time's while I was behind the wheel. Reason for failure on 08's is the Rockers don't get adequate lubrication like 6.0s get from the hpop system and Also it was the early 08's 6.4 not the 6.0s that were actually the motors that made Ford commonize to a shorter pushrod

      Thanks for all the patience when getting in there with the camera. It is so helpful to us. I hope your ankle surgery went well and you're on the mend.👍from us up here in Canada 🇨🇦. It's hard to find a good diesel mechanic who is willing to work on a 6.4. At least in my area. Again thanks for what you do.

    Hello sir, fantastic video. I have the exact same problem on my 6.4 which is completely deleted. Contribution error and misfire on cylinder #2 except my problem comes and goes, it isn't constant and no fuel in my crank case. Does this sound like a rocker arm issue?

    • @NutsandBoltswithTone
      @NutsandBoltswithTone  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would think that since it is intermittent it is not the rocker arm, because the rocker arms wear down and if it were the problem then it would happen all the time. Thanks for watching.

    Well l gotta give you respect for doing this for a living. I love older ford stuff but. But l have a 6.0 litre diesel that k absolutely hate. Ya lve heard it all I got the shitty year cause it’s an early 04. Bla. Bla. Bla. I’ve done the egr delete Head studs and gaskets All the usual crap. And thought it all lve come to realize just how much l hate those engineers All those Diesel engines suck and l would never again buy a diesel truck unless it had a Cummins 12 valve. But then again l hate the dodge trucks they come in. Anyway this was a good vid. Just reminded me of why l hate ford Diesels. Lol. Have a good one.

    Can you do things to make the motor a solid long lasting motor?

    • @NutsandBoltswithTone
      @NutsandBoltswithTone  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really because of the design with the dpf and dumping fuel in the exhaust valves. Thanks for watching.

    • @kevinoneill41

      Ya. Move to a state that doesn't force the failed Emissions science project on you. And delete it as soon as you can. After my delete, I found that the stock cold air filter was too restrictive and the change air filter warning would come on when passing or pulling a load up a hill. Get one that comes with a fitted air box. Don't suck warm air from the engine compartment. Run a good quality oil additive and use a stabilizer. PS met a seemingly knowledgeable fellow. Says that because there is zero lube in modern diesel he said I should add 200cc of 2stroke fuel mix to every 16 gallons of diesel. Says it could save me from replacing my HP fuel pump. Well, I am now doing that. Why not it certainly can't hurt. ?.

      Can you really believe that all that embarrassing smoke during regen is saving the atmosphere from a little black smoke? PS A properly tuned engine should have zero black smoke on a normal lift-off.

    Don't you have to torque the rockers in a specific pattern

    • @NutsandBoltswithTone
      @NutsandBoltswithTone  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes technically you are supposed to. I have never done that I always evenly tighten them down and make sure all push rods are tighten down as well. Thanks for watching.
