- The team are in Somerset to investigate the remains of a small Roman villa, dating back to just after the time of the Roman invasion in 43 a.d. But previous excavations suggest it was occupied by local inhabitants rather than Roman invaders. Could it have been built on the site of an earlier, Iron Age settlement? The team are joined by Roman specialists John Creighton and Tom Moore, and Claire Ryley makes an authentic period garden. Members of the Stranglers put in a surprise appearance

Archeology is an amazing subject, been doing it all my life. I enjoyed people who get excited over finding an old building that no one has seen for a 1000 years. Love this show.
It offers "that feeling" indescribable at the moment, but you know my meaning.

I really like this episode in particular because of the incredible Pre-Roman coin found in Phil's Iron-Age round house. You can see what it means to him, Incredible find!
This show has always fascinated me. I love history and I love learning about different cultures from different time periods. Phil Harding is my favorite person on this show! His enthusiasm is catching!
At roughly 37. you can see one of the ancient white horses on the hill behind the site.
This connects with the coins Phil finds with the horses on the obverse. Epona was the Celtic goddess of the horse.
Epona is key.

I hate to be a drudge, but after John Oliver's rrecent interview with Monica L., I can no longer laugh at her. She spoke about becoming a national punchline at age 23, and how she fell into the clutches of the most powerful man in the world. She spoke of these things without playing the victim, and she is far from humorless. It was quite poignant.
I'd like an update about this site. Surely they've continued excavations there...? Those fields have some wonderful stories to tell. Well done TT. This show never disappoints.

The Celtic coins that they call Dobunni are the same in South Wales the Dobunni and Silures are of the same Tribes, the Horse is Epona , I have some 2nd Century BC Celtic Coins that were found above Llangynwyd in a very Large Hillfort, during the 19th Century, they have the Horse and a Man with spikey Hair , also Celts allegedly did not write, being Welsh and from a Family of Archaeologists we have always known that Celts did write and some coins have names on them, like Gered or Gyred also Meur, they are high Status.

29:16 The guardian of gardens was not Venus but Priapus. There was a statue of Priapus in every Roman garden but they can't show Priapus on this programme.
This is a extraordinary episode relative to our time. Suppose the Iron Age citizens saw the concentration of wealth of the chieftain and than met these Roman chaps that were more like me? I might be tempted to join the invaders to get my share of the wealth?

it appears you can put a trench anywhere and find something of historic value...what a place.
A piece of land would be assigned to a Roman citizen, he would bring his family and slaves to the land, clear the land and build the villa for his family and slaves, over time the villa would turn in to a village.

Interesting program. I enjoy watching programs about Roman history and archaeology..... As an aside, listening to Phil, I believe his accent has tones of the US Southern accent and where it might have evolved from in South Western Britain.

I think the same thing! It sounds a whole lot like the high tide accent found along the south eastern US in isolated island communities AND a lot like parts of my own accent. SO INTERESTING!

That's what happens when you get another culture coming into an area. Buildings go up, the natives take a look see and decide to incorporate some of the "good aspects" they see in construction or amenities. Other natives cling to the past and its familiar construction or necessities for daily life. The key thing is that people had choices---to follow traditional ways or adopt some Roman ways. That's what counts in the end---choices.

During my archeology practice such a excavation methods using excavator wold be wiewed as horrific. We did all with shovels. Layer after layer. And after layer was taken away all was fixed on special paper using scale and system of coordnates.

@@elianazz , may be not all is shown here. But archeologist during excavation destroys historical monument ( villa, manor, fortress etc) he is excavating. So everything - trenches, ditches etc. - must be registered so that next archeologist may know where you were excavating, what you have found. It does not matter how long you dig - 3 days, week, month .... . It is wery interesting to learn new facts about Britain's history and i like these documentaries.

A farmstead site bigger than it should be: I'd put my money on short term animal concentration: many more animals than a single farmer would likely own. A pound for stray animals: Pay a fine to get your animals back. A temporary holding yard to assemble a herd for trading purposes, or tribute in kind, to the local warlord.
The open fire in the round house has always troubled me because of the smoke issue. How could you get around the lack of a chimney without any evidence for a chimney? Answer make a chimney out of light weight organic material that would not survive in the archeology. A suspended funnel made of animal hide would generate the smoke stack effect and draw the smoke through the peak, It would also make an invaluable drying rack.
Experimental archaeology has shown that the smoke filters out through the thatch on the roof without need for a chimney. Earlier attempts apparently left a central hole in the thatch but this created such an updraft that the flames would reach the roof and set it on fire!
@@georgedorn1022 I understand this. The trouble with it, is it depends a lot on the internal humidity of the building and the roofing material. I’m not convinced that the limited amount of experimental archeology has covered all the variables.
More importantly, indigenous fire culture is nothing like the western attitude to fire. We have an attitude of making a fire and then letting it do it’s thing, while we get on with other stuff. An indigenous person in charge of a fire, is constantly focused on its behaviour. It’s like driving a car. Starting a fire and fuel are a big deal, especially when fuel is scarce and the risks of letting a fire go, are catastrophic.
Another problem is fine particulate matter below 2.5 microns which is invisible, does not trigger the cough reflex and tends to linger in enclosed spaces. These particles are too small for the lungs to expel, and they are an electrochemical vector for chemical and biological pathogens.
Besides, the perennial problem of drying out wet clothing remains. These people need drying racks that don’t get in the way of food preparation and general activity around the fire. Suspending these racks would be essential when space is at a premium.
The smoke just went into the thatch and it gets very smoky! I have been in one and my asthma prevented me from staying more than a second. People didn't spend much time inside but they must have been affected by the smoke

Yes Tony is on that as well...if you havent seen Reel History thats worth checking out. I loved the episodes where they had 7 famous Brits who tried to live as working folks in the Victorian era...its very interesting!
You can tell that both Tony and Mick have a strong dose of "Roman + Italian" influence. (Early Roman invaders to Italy were Germanics), after some generations they came to assimilate in the variables if Italian, i.e., (Etruscan, Greek, Phonecian, Sardinian, Basque) and the Etruscans were from the area around the Levant, as were the Phonecians and many of the Greeks. The Basque are their own indigenous Peoples largely found in the area between France and Spain, Basque Country, and they are the lineage if the White Berbers, Post Flood Peoples of the Canary Islands, and Post Flood Irish, the Rh(-) bloodline.

This series is so informative, but I get too irritated to watch. By Tony Robinson that is. The melodrama and limp wristed camp stuff, combined with domineering arrogance.
Tony felt arrogant at first, but the is not the main star in the show. He is just the narrator. And there are many moments when he is cheerful and good sport, and not just witty.
Many people agree with you, him scurrying around , sleeves flapping, negative and sarcastic BUT... it shows how truly polite, educated and lovely the many others that made up the best part of the show were! Please keep watching.
