When Time Team Finally Found An Ancient Roman Temple | Time Team

  • Time Team has never found a Roman temple. But a 30-year-old photograph clearly shows double square cropmarks in a field. Surely this time they will strike lucky? The trouble is, the site may have suffered plough damage. Francis takes charge. Though initial excavations are encouraging, John and Stewart are puzzled by a geophysical anomaly. Including a tessellated pavement and a coin hoard, a picture gradually emerges of not one but four temples - in fact a whole complex of buildings. It proves to be one of the most important excavations in Time Team history.

So Stewart did the thing I thought they would have done straight from the beginning: To get your ruler out and look for landscape features. Stewart is they absolute best, he always stirs up seemingly sure assumptions.

Unless Tony gets a perfect temple or villa, he is never happy. His time on Time Team and Odyssey prove that. While he is frustrated with the field archeologists who explain things to him, he finally admits, "though I don't know a lot about archeology, I still think we should be able to find more buildings.". Phil and Francis are so patient. I am always excited and amazed with the great finds that are discovered which allow all of us to understand history so much better.

I always thought Tony was just supposed to be basically the voice of the average person who does usually want more. Basically a way to let the audience feel their frustration addressed on show and then move on happily with what you actually get. Maybe it's just me that feels that way and appreciates feeling my other less patient side gets a voice on the show through Tony.

It’s so annoying that the post-Roman era Brits demolished all the Roman buildings, and went back to living in mud huts.

Ironic that slaughtering dozens of people for entertainment would become celebrated in the Roman world, but Druidic human sacrifice was a horror. I wonder if capital punishment (of murderers and such) were ritualized into religious ceremony more often than choosing "innocents". Maybe the thought of sacrificing innocents is a modern dramatic interpretation.

One important critique for readers to note, while the 3rd CE coin can be used to establish a terminus post quem it does not necessarily mean the floor predates the it. For example, imagine the floor was built in the 4th c. CE but the older coin was still in circulation when it was dropped. I’m that case the floor is younger than the coin. That’s why we say that the floor is at least as old as the coin rather than as old or older.

Lol they do backfill the site, they plot out where the buildings were located, the next lot of diggers know the exact location without having to go through the hoohaa of trying to find it. And no farmers dont have their land taken, British Historic Trust may buy that piece of land that the the buildings were on, or the farmer may cease ploughing that area of field.

@@katerinakemp5701 no... they legitimately do have it taken... they are not allowed to grow anything on it or plow it in fear of damage to artifacts and structures beneath the soil plus they don’t own anything that is/was found on what is technically their property.... essentially they are stuck paying taxes on land they can no longer use so 9/10 times they end up selling it because is of no use to them anymore
