    I subbed to Musty's Patreon when he first started and I was looking to build out a PULSE-esque rig as it was (and still is) my all-time favorite sound. I can't recommend it enough. Mustafa is an absolute beast and really makes the whole (daunting) task of reverse engineering these sounds quite approachable. Even though I've since gone to a Fractal Axe FX III rig, his tutorials and tone guides are still insanely helpful (from effects ordering to gain stages, etc). One of the "A-ha!" moments I had with Musty's content was the importance of rotary sounds in ALL of Gilmours pulse songs, not just the obvious ones (like Any Colour). You can bet that I also have that punched in on my Fractal presets!
    Hat's off, Musty! Always a privilege when you drop a new video.

      he gets them with shit ton of expensive gear just like everyone else. can we stop with this "finger and soul" nonsense already and move on with FACTS? I admit there's a mini little room for playing style and picking style, but honestly, would he get the same sound with a gibson guitar or vox amp? because I heard another brick part II solo like you and it's gibson and it sounds nothing like PULSE.

    Just letting everyone in the comments know, the reason the tone sounds different is because those raw sound came from a Pink Floyd bootleg, probably recorded with a cassette recorder. The tone is a half step down because of that. The bootleg is either from the TV broadcast or the BBC 1 radio broadcast.

    • @EsteemedRepresentative
      @EsteemedRepresentative 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I actually prefer the Comfortably Numb solos from TDSOT over the PULSE version. The second PULSE solo sounds like he's "going through the motions" while on TDSOT he's really digging into it and those descending licks don't just go down because they do. They have more feeling... that raw attack with stops that make those notes stand out.

  • @rhaulvictor9288
    @rhaulvictor9288 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I'll give you a tip!
    The gilmour sounds more powerful because it doesn't let the entire signal pass through the chorus. It divides the signal where one amplifier receives the signal without chorus and another with chorus. But for those who don't have the means to have two amplifiers, I recommend using a Split pedal. And there you mix the raw signal with the chorus, which will give a feeling of greater strength in the sound. The mix of modulated sound and raw 50/50 sound is very interesting!

    • @rhaulvictor9288
      @rhaulvictor9288 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Another tip I learned from a great sound engineer. Change the Sm57 to the Shure Beta57, it's incredible how it is more compressed and makes the guitar sound more pleasant in the mix!

    • @mustyguitar
      @mustyguitar  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I explain this on the PULSE definitive guide video. That's why I'm using my chorus about half the level as you might have noticed. splitting signal and using stereo setup would be much better for sure, but I didn't know about shure beta57, I thought they all used sm57 throughout pulse tour.

    • @rhaulvictor9288
      @rhaulvictor9288 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mustyguitar The Beta57 was widely used in vocals and guitars in the 90s. It is more compressed so that it doesn't need to use as much gain, making it easier to use on stage with loud sounds.
      But this idea of a pedal that divides the Chorus signal into two gives a more controllable Chorus sensation! Where you can use more Deph and have it more controlled in the final signal.

    • @rhaulvictor9288
      @rhaulvictor9288 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Hey man, I wanna offer a few thoughts on the difference in EQ in the two recordings. As I understand, the "raw" sound is from a home tape recording. Now, with tapes there are a lot of variables. What deck it was recorded on, what tape, what bias (the mid and treble sounds a bit over saturated so it might be underbiased or recorded a little hot) and of course what deck was that tape played back on to be digitised and how old the recording is. And there's an audible speed difference as well. So I think you're totally right that the final recording was overproduced, but I don't think we can judge the original tone by this raw recording either.

    There’s one thing I noticed immediately. When it’s mixed it sounds like the left side of the stereo has the delay set for 20 or so milliseconds. Whatever they did during the mixing made it sound more full bodied along with the mods. These tones are particularly dark you need a fuck load of bass to try these in your bedroom. Good luck

    I think you get great tone. I often wonder -- especially when there is a critique of "thin" tone -- how many of those players know how to sit in a mix. I don't like to complain about "bedroom players" like so many do. If you're playing music, that's a good thing. But it's always good to play in public. It makes you a better musician when you play with other musicians. And you begin to learn why other guitarists make some of the choices that they do.

    the raw tones sound a lot better, they definitely need touching up and a little bit of eq here and there, but I feel like the final mix sounds too nasaly and too mid heavy, which is why I'm not a fan of pulse tones, I didn't realise how much was actually studio stuff lol

SO bright in 1980 for numb I thought he must’ve been on the wrong pick up or something was wrong with the eq. Thin and brittle. But hey. It doesn’t matter! You know what, and I am just as guilty as the next person for this, but as you have stated before a few times no one, and i mean no one is going to get the sounds down to an absolute T. It's just impossible as we know that a certain % of the sounds comes from the fingers and the pressure etc. But, the tones that you produce are 97-98% there - with that last few % being DG's fingers. How can someone not be happy with that? However I know that there is an itch to get a 100% match and that's a problem all of us DG imitating guitar players do most of the time when covering PF songs - particularly PULSE tones.
    Musty, you do a great job and I applaud your desire, research and guitar skills and really applaud your tone matching of the great man himself.
    On another note, have you ever tried recreating the PULSE tones for the Helix Floor? If so, are they available to download?
    If not, can you recommend where to find the closest sounding PULSE tones for the Helix Floor that for your ears are as close as you have heard?

    imo opinion truely amazing tones and guidelines for David G tones.
    I would find interesting if you have experience with body wood choice (alder or ash in a strat body) for DG tones. I believe DG used mostly alder / maple in his strats. But I think ash as bodywood will also work fine. But in my opinion opinion there is a tonal difference. I'd describe alder as a tad more on the warmer side and ash a tad more on the side of being brittle but in a good way if that makes sense. Sorry buddy but just too much blah! Add in your marketing and it's all too much...

      do you think I should do everything free, for someone who comments disrespectfully like this? without promoting my countless hours of work, the best work there is on the web about the subject, the best work for YOU? best work, approved by hundreds of paying people?
      I get great results when I talk about these things because people don't know they can learn everything very easily. you are probably not my audience, don't be a stranger though.
