I'm 37 now and I haven't been to a proper underground rave since 2004, but those nights still remain my most wonderful and special memories. Two raves in particular really stand out "first two nights I tried MDMA and back when it was pure in 1999" The tracks that were played still stir up emotions I don't get from nothing else. It was all about love and feeling connected to everyone. The atmosphere was perfect, nobody took too much, everyone looked out for reach other, making sure you didn't get too hot or drink too much water, just perfect all around. I wouldn't trade those nights for anything!
Classic shit! I grew up in Detroit and experienced the most capturing time of my in the scene! Not one regret and it was a staple in my youth / young adulthood. I’m 36 btw
Word!! I have a few older friends who raved back in the 90's and then others who did when we were in HS in the early 2000's (I'm almost 32 now), and I wish that I had gone to them back then!! I've heard so many great stories from other OG ravers, I liken them to how the scene was when I first started raving back in '09..way more PLUR and music-oriented. The scene has always had its ebbs and flows, but it has DEF changed quite significantly over the last 10 years, ever since it's become more mainstream/legalized due to EDC and other EDM festivals..which don't get me wrong, I love festivals, I just miss underground illegal parties too lol..esp desert parties!
Raving in london mid late 90s was .... a dream. Very little incidents, organisers were lovely , ravers looked after each other and we never felt unsafe. Such fun times, people genuinely wanted to dance and have fun, just and only that.
Gotta stay hydrated. Also, the fuckers who laced beer with Ketamine that killed that kid are scum. Don't fucking lace anything, ffs *oh, watched the rest of the video and I guess the kid knew but without knowing the dose or tolerance took too much. That sucks. Kids, it's OK to do drugs, but have someone with you with some experience to keep an eye out
@@chucklebutt4470 wasn't laced. in the video he said they put it in the beer as a group to take the ket through drinking it but he overdosed by drinking it all at once
fooglez it was glorious i remember jumping around New years eve wearing a be top and jeans in the snow and dancing as the sun came up Some time in the 90s in Some field on the middle of nowhere. Noone had mobile phones and there was No internet so you would meet up at service stations on the highway and go in a convoy..... Amazing
I'm a 55 year old farmer from Australia and this resonates with me in such a positive way. Youth having fun. The war on drugs is barbaric and has caused much harm but it has led to cool cultures like underground raves. Go kids.
I'm so pleased that these kids can experience what I and many others experienced in the late 80's & 90's, and that they're keeping this special scene alive.
YUP, in 88 the umbrella of rave drew in the 70s punks, rockers and hippies and falkland vets, it crossed 3 generations, it helped smashed hooliganism as mdma outsmarted cocoaine in a hearbeat , it does not discriminate in age, looks, gender, financial status, race, creed or being ugly/beautiful, you just gota want to be part of something outside of what we all keep being told to be in society. Fuckin rave on x
i dote It's possible. But to get to that natural state without the initiation of drugs is probably hard. People are cowards in the beginning, so they do drugs to see themselves. There has to be a rolemodel or a teacher who knows all the steps.
what im saying is, even if you think you have attained the natural state and then you use drugs, it will be a challenge coming out of it because drugs probably get you in a higher state than you can imagine
Dr Tune Ah okay...I would fckin love to go to such a spontaneus rave party, but I've never heard of them in my country....and english house is the best house anyway. (Is it House? I am not sure xD)
Man this brought back memories of my teen years and young adult life. I'm 35 and I still have a few of these raves left in me lol. Freedom to party is the freedom to live. Great documentary. Music dance liberation!
It’s amazing how history repeats itself. The same thing happened in Sacramento at the turn of the century until promoters and cities realized how much money was involved and then you saw the big venues open up in San Fran and surrounding areas to capitalize and soon after the scene died. I imagine now it’s back underground. This all takes me back. I applaud the kids for taking it into their own hands and giving police a run for their money;)
Break-in's were the norm for the rave scene in the 90's. I participated in quite a few of them. It's very cool to see it return and very cool to see a new generation of kids digging it.
Yeah, I went to several all over London and the surrounding areas. Usually in condemned office blocks that were security fenced, the laws at the time preventing officers from forcing entry. There'd be someone on the gate unlocking to let people in as they arrived. I went to one a few minutes walk from London Bridge station, but since it wasn't as residential then, people didn't care all that much about the noise and the buildings were usually pretty much gutted before anyone arrived, so there was no criminal damage. Just a soundsystem, a lot of people, and dealers lining the hallways lol. I never had a bad experience at any of the squat parties or forest raves I went to in the nineties and early 2000s before I moved out of London. The wealth divide is too big, the kids too skint, and they don't want to drink, or listen to the more commercial music in the club's. I'm lucky in that I live in Bristol and there are still a lot of good music venues here, some of them while not exactly drug friendly, do turn a blind eye, and there's a fair amount of musical diversity. But there's something about an illegal rave that's just so much more uplifting and euphoric, even without the drug aspects.
Twenty years ago i was into the same thing and I'm happy that the next generation still wants to carry on the tradition, albeit that the inner cities are all camera'ed up making things a lot more difficult in present day. The need for freedom and to express yourself never dies.
+Drunken Ira Hayes That is a much used argument, that doesn't really take into account that all those things also happen when people go to legal clubs or bars...
+Whazzar Legal clubs and bars have INSURANCE, and also have BOUNCERS, and the staff are SUPPOSED to prevent drug use if they witness it. So there's a bit of a different between this and legal clubs
Yeah I don't really get why they want those raves to be legal. It beeing illegal seems for most of the people there to be a big part of the thrill. No bouncers and regulations and since most of them are either 16 or act like they are still 16 they all love to rebel against authorities.
Thinking with my adult mind, I'd be concerned about having 800 people in one place that's not equipped for that many people, what if a fire started? It's happened before and people get trapped inside and burn to death, that's pretty serious.
i love how most of the vice guys seem pretty chill compared to average media, they kinda fit in a look like they might eve have a little fun sometimes.
Sober raver here. I enjoy all sorts of music. Why are raves tracked down when most hard rock metal concerts are full of drugs but supported by the law? Party and be safe. Focus on being safe.
Who needs md when you have dnb?! Maybe some bears and a little skunk to release a litle bit and u in the front line like they say playing the game ;) md is diferent to everybody some people dont even like and start to feel bad, understand that make sense to you, but I dont think so, anyway is just opinions, in the end I think music is what moves people and the rigth to party drugs are a consequence not from raves, from every world in any kind of things
Mdma doesnt do a damn thing to me anymore, i still love concerts/raves. I guess i still have the memories but the music is definitely the biggest part by far for me anymore. Get a few drinks or do a little blow sometimes is enough for me
8 years later and I still come back to this vid. From an era we might not ever see again, about an experience I can only ever wish to have participated in. One of my favorite pieces from VICE.
Haszyszyn HSN nah I go and see live metal bands that actually have talent of making melodic compositions with real instruments. A rave where everybody is gurning to some sub par shite isn't for me anymore.
I was 15 when the rave culture hit the first time round.....ahhh the happy years that followed. Then the scene got commercialised but the tunes were amazing in the clubs, which were still good back then. It made me happy on this vid to see young free spirits going out into nature, round a fire, doing whatever recreational ;);) and dancing in the tent. No bother.... how youth should be. Now older and wiser...I feel that theres something very shamanic about rave culture. We had our own summers of love in the 90s and 00s and this cynical world needs it again....rave on peeps 🙌✌😷
"People have been gathering together in groups and transcending their pathological individuality through music and ritual since the beginning of time..." -JBP Just an excerpt from a conversation that I committed to memory that my late 90's and early 2000's rave scene experience(s) here in Detroit inspired. Even in such a City as Detroit which is said to be the birthplace of this genre, the vibe, the experiences, and the Love were, and still are the most beautiful and amazing memories I have of my youth. "Techno" and the heartbeat of Detroit's minimal techno and house music provided the soundtrack to my young life. Where I was once an acid tripping slam dance and mosh-centric teenager through the sonic energy nu-metal (rage against the machine, Korn, etc.) Provided my young soul, the beautiful heartbeat of this music genre and the chemical soup, of suburbanites and city dwellers alike, I was shown the love and belonging our current society cultures right the hell out of each individual that doesn't seek the deeper truths of our existence. Love these pieces ❤️ Keep em coming vice 💪🙏💯 PLUR
Vice needs to do a follow up on this and these folks to see if they are still doing the parties or if they have resorted proper venues. Also to see how if the law is cracking down harder or lightening up. I hope the law is easing up because these kids aren't fighting or killing each other its all about love and love for the music. Respect to these guys throwin down!!!
Awesome, glad to hear illegal raves are still happening. I enjoyed the late 80s early 90 raves. At the time, I never realised that I was part of a dawning culture and was just enjoying and living it. The excitement of being part of a dance trend is a buzz in itself, being at an illegal rave just heightens that excitement. People are always going to push the boundaries, its part of learning and growing and it creates some truly exciting memories based on an underworld culture. Raves are about acceptance and a joining of minds. Didn't matter who your were, where you came from or what you did for a living, you were all there for the same buzz. There are always going to be individual casualties in whatever risky activity you do. Give people the knowledge to enjoy it as safely as possible, because, it isnt going to stop them even if you create a culture of ignorance and more fatalities will occur due to the ignorance culture. Anyway, love it - Let's av'it! :-)
you're breaking the law, you are not allowed to break and enter into people's property how would you like it if i broke into you're place and threw a party? do it at you're place or rent a place to have a party do not break and enter into people's property
as a 16-year-old coming from a really conservative family that judges people like this, I find this so cool & exciting, I personally don't see anything wrong with it, they're just having some fun and now I wanna go to one of these.
I was in the Portland, Oregon rave scene starting in 2000 to like 2006. It was some of the best experiences of my life. It opened my mind and turned me into a better person.
I can totally relate (though my own experiences date a lot later + were mostly on mostly legal parties). *This* is exactly what is missing from all media coverage I have ever seen: The connectedness, the caring, loving culture, everyone asking everyone if they are okay, if they drank enough water...it's just one big family. Much love to all ravers and dancers and lovers of electronic music
Whoot whoot, 420 crew present.....Portlands scene got a start by like 98, 99. Then full swing by 01. Went to a warehouse party that got shut down early. Miss those days and the crews that ran the streets. Portlands dead
I was still really small but I went to some raves with my cousins and honestly those parties were bonkers. Parties today are so bland. Kids are just taking pictures the whole time, they don't even speak to one another, just oggle each other down like some kind of filth. Really nasty environment.
That's exactly the time and place I started going to my first ones. I used to go to after hours raves at the Paris theater near burnside. Watching this took me back, to some deep woods hardcore events. I prefer the legal festivals now, lol. I don't mind spending the money to not be hassled
I've been to over 25 raves in the last 1.5 years and I will say there is absolutely nothing that compares. Once you are familiar with the producers you're watching it's the ultimate joy. You can get so close with DJ's, there is no such thing as looking stupid at the club unless you're not dancing and you meet other people who come from all walks of life
Respect keep the scene alive I am 55 and still travel the UK for a Illegal Halloween Party. Now taking my son and nephews along. Respect from Norfolk and Good.
you didn't watch this video, what these people are doing is wrong, they are breaking and entry into other people's property, some of these people are being violent and there are minors in these raves, i don't care if adults want to rave in a rented venue that's fine, if they were doing this legally renting a venue having only 18 and up and not being violent then i don't care if they take drugs, have sex whatever there adults and should be able to make their own decision but its how they are going about it is wrong and illegal for good reason, these criminals belong in prison. Do it legally for fuck sake, i don't agree with the war on drugs but how these people are going about it is wrong
@Inthe Garbage no its not, and you are a fucking idiot how would you like it if i broke into your home and did whatever i wanted there? just as i have no right being there, these people have no right breaking an entry into private property they don't own

Vice must do a piece on Cape Town, South Africa's Psy-trance scene. It's pretty much the same as the North Wales scene, but it's not illegal. So naturally, the scene is much more developed, allowing some huge raves.
I don't know what you've heard but there are two best reasons to move to Israel: you are Jewish and are in touch with your spiritual and historical heritage. 2. The country you live in atm is worse off economically and you can use Israel as a launching pad for somewhere like Europe, North America, or Australia.
I felt a huge sense of nostalgia watching this. I used to live in East and went to lots of raves in the early 00's. It was a hidden, underground, magical world full of great music, love and euphoria. Ive never experienced anything like it since. I will forever cherish those memories it was a brillant time in my life. A great documentary which took me back to the good old days.
This has been a part of the human experience since before civilization. It is a modern incarnation of the Dionysian Rite. It will never be stopped. It is an integral part of being human.
Nailed it These Experiences and behavior are hard wired into us. Experiencing this level of love and understanding in an industrial wasteland and ghetto such as Detroit changed me forever. My most fondest memories of my youth were encapsulated in these short couple of years. The biggest danger in all of this is the youth with their rudementary understanding of the world and their place in it. Especially the level of responsibility that comes with the ingestion of such powerful psychedelics and empathogens. Then again, these are the experiences that once led me to drug oblivion, are the very same experiences that "cultured" me into the man I am today. Much love and ALWAYS P.L.U.R. 😁😁😁
30 Years ago in America, and NYC we called them outlaws. They were held in warehouses, under bridges and in fields. 90% of the time the cops broke our balls. The Music was Hardcore, Hard Techno and Acid Trance. This is a Global Culture, it will never end!
@Orion Rodriguez all the paramedics I've ever encountered are so understanding and accepting. hahaha you clueless fucks don't even know. south africa, specifically the western cape has one of the biggest "underground" rave scenes in the world in the name of psytrance festivals. try five day long parties with 3000 people and 24/7 music on a massive system ranging up to like 200bpm in the fucking african mountains. the shit you get in europe is weak in comparison tbh. rave is alive everywhere
I've been to plenty of real raves in my time. How would you know what I have or haven't done when you don't know the first thing about me. Again, this video is just thuggish idiot kids. Not the real rave scene at all. North of the Scottish border, things are very, very different and waaaaay more chilled out. Fannies like the ones in this video get kicked out or driven away and dumped in the middle of nowhere, very fast.
Peacful Ravers. Well, is it peacful to break in to someone's property, vandalise it then being upset if the police kicks some butts? honestly i like raves, i've been few times, but do not try to sell me that all of these people are lovely, happy, peaceful lads.
Well the problem is that if they get their own buildings they get shut down extremely fast. In many places you literally cannot do raves, so this is how they act out. In my country raves are usually held in derelict buildings or hired on the down low.
They're being forced to do this because clubs get shut down as soon as they open. And yes, about 99% of ravers are lovely, happy, peaceful lads. More fights break out in legal clubs because of angry drunk retards, but here? It's all peace, love and ecstacy baby!
I live in the U.S but this takes me back to my younger days of club houses and pop-up raves! I may have gotten older, but those rave beats are forever in my heart! 🔊🤩🔊😎🔊🤗🔊♥️🔊

They want to do it because it's natural not because it's not allowed. What's wrong about dancing and jumping around?
its the drug involvement thats not allowed because otherwise there are clubs and house parties
i dote
Yea. Are the drugs really necessary to go wild? Is there no other way?
probably not...thats why its very difficult to stop drug use after you start them
i dote
It's possible.

It’s amazing how history repeats itself.

Oh i hope someone breaks into your home one day.
Harald von Hinten nice
@@haraldvonhinten8921 They're breaking into abandonned warehouses not houses you idiot
This reporter is fucking great, loved how he embraced the rave scene so much.

Twenty years ago i was into the same thing and I'm happy that the next generation still wants to carry on the tradition, albeit that the inner cities are all camera'ed up making things a lot more difficult in present day.

shame the police declined to interview. i was honestly curious about their reasons behind banning these raves.
It's happened before and people get trapped inside and burn to death, that's pretty serious.
i mean, it'd be real nice if it weren't made illegal then
i love how most of the vice guys seem pretty chill compared to average media, they kinda fit in a look like they might eve have a little fun sometimes.
Sober raver here. I enjoy all sorts of music. Why are raves tracked down when most hard rock metal concerts are full of drugs but supported by the law? Party and be safe. Focus on being safe.
no offense and I don't mean to sound elitist but you honestly cant understand what rave is if you haven't dropped md at one
Get a few drinks or do a little blow sometimes is enough for me
I have been to many metal shows the only drug I have seen is pot. In genral metal shows are at proper venues so there is nothing illegal

Just an excerpt from a conversation that I committed to memory that my late 90's and early 2000's rave scene experience(s) here in Detroit inspired.

Just an excerpt of a conversation that I committed to memory due to my underground rave scene Xperiences in the late 90's and early 2000's.
Literally everything humans do is "an integral part of being human".
Godspeedhero posting inane comments on TH-cam is not an integral part of being human.
@@str8neverstr8ened60 couldn't agree more, you've just said exactly what I had in my mind.

21:22 i feel this Guy
30 Years ago in America, and NYC we called them outlaws. They were held in warehouses, under bridges and in fields. 90% of the time the cops broke our balls. The Music was Hardcore, Hard Techno and Acid Trance. This is a Global Culture, it will never end!
This journalist offered really insightful and well-spoken commentary
no imo
It's lovely to see different generations mixing together!
Nice to see people keeping this thing real. PLUR
i wish i was cool enough to go to a rave
+0oo0CLOUD0oo0 ironic??? you mean sarcastic ? LMAOOO
+0oo0CLOUD0oo0 Your username...
Auto-correct does not correct Sarcastic to Ironic you bellflick
same here, I would NEVER GO TO A RAVE. if I went to a rave people would laugh at me because i have no rhythm and am 15 pounds overweight
wtf lol
I used to love going to these do's in the 90's. Highlight of my life 🙂
Not the rave killed the guy, the drugs did!!
idiocracy killed him
fr4gde4l3r Not knowing how to measure the amount killed him
yeah hard drugs often require some simple research. However nearly everytime someone died on something like ecstasy it was caused through alcohol.
More like dehydration, overhydration or other substances (like alcohol) that were consumed aswell.
i think you mean "idiocy"... the irony.
wow the welsh gabber scene looks horrific
Heujj gabber unite
looks fun to me
Let out a riot parade out on a group of rave teens? Wow... just wow... kinda like how america treated punks and goths during the 80's and 90's

..... white people.
@@gil5885 What is it you wanna say about white people?
Damn right!
lil dude this is what makes me pissed off. I riot for YOUR race and your just rude to ours. Not all white people are racist
this just makes me want to rave even harder and make a trip out to Britain
Yesenia Contreras beauty 🤙🏻
@Orion Rodriguez yeah it probably wouldn't be very fun run running from the cops while rolling lmao
@@fabiorobey4375 thank you!
@Orion Rodriguez all the paramedics I've ever encountered are so understanding and accepting. I remember my first time rolling I got separated from my group while I was coming up, I had a panic attack and decided to go to the tent. The paramedic lady helped me find my friends and comforted me during my come up hahaha
Check out any BOOMTOWN videos, best uk dance music festival :)
Im 15 now, and Ive experienced nothing, This video was really cool to see. All the PLUR and just will to party in all these people is amazing. I really wish I could experience a classic rave

Meanwhile in Africa...they have the whole wilderness to throw a rave but no speakers and shit...
right enema, right... (^^_)
Spencer Meyer shut the fuck up kid
this nigga thinks all of Africa has no speakers. u stupid and ignorant
@ redi .... Acid pepe isn't a 'nigga'... that would be an insult to proper niggas.. (^^,)
hahaha you clueless fucks don't even know. south africa, specifically the western cape has one of the biggest "underground" rave scenes in the world in the name of psytrance festivals. try five day long parties with 3000 people and 24/7 music on a massive system ranging up to like 200bpm in the fucking african mountains. the shit you get in europe is weak in comparison tbh. rave is alive everywhere
Great documentary, amazing to see the lively rave scene on the other side of the world :)
this is not the real rave scene. these are thuggish idiot kids. the real rave scene is far different
I've been to plenty of real raves in my time. How would you know what I have or haven't done when you don't know the first thing about me. Again, this video is just thuggish idiot kids. Not the real rave scene at all. North of the Scottish border, things are very, very different and waaaaay more chilled out. Fannies like the ones in this video get kicked out or driven away and dumped in the middle of nowhere, very fast.
lol scotland is worse trust me
Scotland is a tumour on the island of the UK. Awful country.
Palace floor is the typical keyboard warrior, cmon up to Scotland and say it to one of our faces, perhaps come to Glasgow and see what happens
I went raving a lot in the early 2000s. Far too old for that now but it's really nice to remember those crazy days. Another excellent docu, thank you.
Love how they all are wearing angerfist’s masks @ 15:15 !
Raise your fists for angerfist!😍🖤
the mask existed before angerfist was a thing tho
nah hardcore is shite
✊✊✊ ANGERFIST!!!!
I much prefer Scott Brown to be fair 🥴
Peacful Ravers. Well, is it peacful to break in to someone's property, vandalise it then being upset if the police kicks some butts?
honestly i like raves, i've been few times, but do not try to sell me that all of these people are lovely, happy, peaceful lads.
The world sees ravers as criminals so they shut down the clubs we go to, making us have to break things to carry on our dying culture
In my country there are no raves. Not a single one, anywhere...
Where are you from?
I live in the U.S but this takes me back to my younger days of club houses and pop-up raves! I may have gotten older, but those rave beats are forever in my heart! 🔊🤩🔊😎🔊🤗🔊♥️🔊
