Cadbury used to be popular in NZ until one day the public started to notice their chocolate started to taste waxy, when quizzed Cadbury said "Oh yeh, sorry we changed one of the key ingredients to Palm oil, tough luck". Unfortunately Cadbury underestimated Kiwis, who as a whole rejected the new recipe and while they back peddled, their arrogance put them off side with the public. A Local company who specialized in Peanut slabs (the best in the world)saw an opportunity to expand into the market and Kiwis jumped on board in mass. Whittaker's has taken over the market to the point where Cadbury up and buggered off to Australia, frankly they can have them.
Whittaker's 110%, get it in yah!!!

About the same price point too. Whittaker's put out an add campaigne on telly when it happened. I think k it was something like a screen shot that came up with "thanks Cadbury" and then next the Whittaker's logo. Only lasted a few days and then they launched with a bang. NZ laughed with them. Loved it.

That was when they were being made in their Auckland factory. Their chocolate blocks were also the same size as the Whittaker’s blocks. They changed to palm oil when the Auckland factory closed and they started being made in Dunedin and made the blocks half the size.

I REALLY MISS Raison Peanut Slabs.. Then again my all time favourite chok was (uggg I shudder to think of the name... GRAPEFRUIT chocolate..
Sounds disgusting (And I hate grapefruit)... but I deliberately gave people some and refused to tell them what it was... and they all said it was the best flavour they had ever had...
Then I told them it was Grapefruit and they all said the same thing... "I would NEVER have brought Grapefruit chocolate..."...
And there, for a bad name, died the best chocolate ever..... If only they had called it "TROPICAL" or something and had fine print.. contains citrus including grapefruit...
Mum asked Whitakers, apparently they can't get a constant supply of quality grapefruit...

Cadbury's used to be the most trusted brand in NZ, then they dicked around with the recipe using palm oil which Kiwi's pushed back on hard as it messed with the flavour and texture. Then they moved the production to Australia. No surprises, Cadbury's dropped of the list which Whittaker's no heads it.

Cadbury Chocolate has been made in Tasmanian since 1921, it was bought by a foreign company in 2010. So it isn't that it started to be made in Aus n not NZ, it is that in 2010 it got purchased by a foreign company, where they closed the NZ factory down n changed the recipe. While it is made in Australia the recipe is made from a foreign company. It bought the reputation and then made the Chocolate rubbish.

Mondelez International, Inc. The American multinational confectionery, food, holding, beverage and snack food company based in Chicago that owns Cadbury , switched from using expensive cocoa butter in their products to palm oil .
Aside from palm oil plantations being the major cause of rain forest destruction in Southeast Asia, the taste of the chocolate turned to shite.
The market in New Zealand switched to Whittakers which was a small player in the chocolate market. Their market share exploded and Cadbury moved all production to the Australian factories.

Cadbury also reduced the size of their large bar from 250gm to 200g7m. And a few months later put it up to 220gm with a big promotion based on a 10% increase thinking we'd forget the original reduction.
Their corprate greed got what it deserved.
Now l notice that the one product of theirs that l do buy the Breakaway biscut (each one individualy wrapped) is smaller than it used to be. We know most Cos do it but when it come to shrinkflation they're the worst.

Cadbury and Nestle products no longer live in my pantry. Once Cadbury changed to using palm oil instead of cocoa butter it lost any quality it had. They've changed back but for New Zealanders the damage has been done. Nestle also use it and they also often use HFCS as a sweetener. Use of palm oil destroys native habitats of orangutans and other animals when their forests are mowed down to plant palm oil trees. It makes chocolate taste odd, it stays feeling slimy and waxy and is an inferior product, in my view. If you get the chance try a Whittaker's peanut slab. I've been buying those for 60 years. Also check out some of their old ads on TH-cam, They're very creative and well produced.

For a short time Whittaker’s made a PB&J chocolate bar - basically that peanut butter chocolate on one end and the Jelly tip chocolate on the other. That meant you could have the flavours separate or put one square of each together for a combo flavour - BEST THING EVER!!

I stopped after the Dunedin factory closed although had mostly swapped to Whittaker's and/or nestle before that. They were giving cadbury blocks out for free at a netball game I went to (they were a sponsor) and it was so sickly. The taste was even worse than when they were messing with the flavour/formula a decade or so ago.

I think Hazella is more of a mousse than fudge texture. Your friend hooked you up with a good selection of Whittakers. I agree with those that say it is no comparison to Australian Cadbury. Caramilk Twirl is now the other Cadbury I eat. Whittakers all the way.

One thing to keep in mind, the main difference between the Original Cadbury and the Australian version is that Australia adds an anti-melting agent to their chocolate to stop it from melting at our standard room temp. its why sometimes it can leave you with a weird mouthfeel

Was drinking in a pub outside of London, during the night one of the guys found out I was a kiwi. he was like " oh man had some NZ chocolate once was is so good....." , Whittakers yeh i've brought some over, peanut slabs etc. " how much you sell for?" being typical kiwi, haha how much you want to pay.... He pulls out wallet, peels off 20 quid!! Others are like WTF Is going on here, 20 quid for a block of chocolate. A rapid transactional exchange, vibe felt like a drug deal was going down. Duly noted he stashed it pretty quick, wasn't going to share it, later he bumped me, "so good worth every penny". I tell you Whittakers Chocolate overseas is currency!! never leave NZ without it.

Cadbury used to be decent in New Zealand (Whittaker's was always superiour to me) but then they moved production to Australia. And Rob as you know Australia gets HOT so they have changed the ingredients to melt less under hotter temperatures, so I'm told. This is why the taste is worse than it once was. Whittaker's btw is available in every store and corner dairy shop here. About $7NZ per block which is about 3.30 pounds. Personally I prefer their white chocolate over the rest but plain dairy milk is second best. It is indeed a much higher quality chocolate than most but to us it's normal. They did once do a macadamia and white chocolate tho and that was something special. That sadly was discontinued years ago due tot he nut prices.

Whittaker's is far superior. Cadbury's used to be made in Auckland & Dunedin... & was more popular. When it came out that Cadbury's was using Palm Oil, they alienated fans. Then they raised their prices while reducing the block sizes. Whittaker's Chocolate is the best. An iconic Kiwi family business that's our Most Trusted Brand. Made in Elston, Porirua north of Wellington - Capital City of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Whittakers is all about the peanut slab and the coconut block. Cadbury in Australia is all about the dairy milk, old gold, caramello, top deck, fruit & nut (though that one is controversial), marvellous creations and maybe dream (if you are into white chocolate). It’s a bit weird to be tasting these two brands and not to be trying many of the most popular flavours.

And to think you didnt even try the best Whittaker's ones. As a kid it was always Cadbury's but they changed the taste, reduced their package size and closed their Dunedin NZ plant so between all those things alot of Kiwis stopped buying or reduced their buying and moved to Whittaker's or the other brands available. A few years ago I must have gone crazy and bought a cadburys when it was on special and it was sooo sickly sweet. It was so yuck it reminded me why i'd stopped buying them. Occasionally i'll buy one of the single-serve crunchies or flakes but thats it, but never those big blocks. Whittaker's all the way. There is also a mint version of the Aero bar which is good too but its often hard to find / unavailable.
