I am a former High School sewing teacher and I got fabric and sewing supplies donated to the classroom. all the time. It was very helpful, especially for the students who couldn't afford fabric and supplies. I'm sure one of the high school FACS teachers in your area would love some of these amazing supplies.
Our schools in SC fazed out sewing years ago. Such a shame, too, as it is still a useful skill. I remember when the girls used to make their prom dresses…
Someone recently suggested Etsy or eBay for selling the quilting supplies, and I want to second that. Seeing all those boxes with Missouri Star logos means she probably bought a lot of their precuts and/or kits, and those are not inexpensive. I’m glad you have chosen to give yourself time and space, you are working hard and deserve a high five and a big hug! ❤️
K, so I have been watching your struggle with your mom’s property from the beginning. As a genealogist, please find a cousin, 2nd cousin or ANYONE related to your family and send them that scrapbook. I do understand many people in their own family do care less about the past or their parent’s life. But as a family history these scrapbooks are a gold mine and precious. Too much of regular people’s history is thrown into the trash. That scrapbook IS history.
One of my mother’s newspaper clippings was an obituary that eventually lead to me finding a whole branch of the family. Scan or photograph everything carefully for later investigating
Thrifters buy old scrapbooks for the graphics on the cards etc. they sell very well. Also old postage stamps on the envelopes or cards….sell it as a whole unit. I’m cleaning out things now so my daughter won’t have to deal with things. I’ve marked a lot of things for her that were my grandmothers. Craft books and magazines sell good too. Don’t be so fast to put on the curb. You need to have multiple sales. Craft sale, ephemera sale (scrap book and old magazines etc) household sale. I know the driving back and forth is a pain but take your time going thru things. You can have a spring sale, a summer sale and a fall sale. You will clear more money instead of using a company. Just please be safe. I always worry when ppl know you are alone and have cash in the house from the sale. Looking forward to your next video!
when you get there, you could do "by appointment only" viewing of the fabric and craft materials, to attract bulk buyers. this might avoid dozens of people unfolding everything all at once in a public sale and making a mess :) check books for things hidden inside before donating!
The house is looking great. You are really making great progress! Must be a great feeling having all of the quilting supplies stacked up in the bedroom. Great news on the library pick up. What you might want to do is designate one box as a memory box to keep some of your mother's sentimental items. This container method will help you to only keep select items. But only keep things that bring a feeling of joy to you. It may even be the beauty of an item, even if you don't know the story behind it. It is also fine if you keep nothing at all. The memory of your mother is in your heart and not in her things. I kept very little of my mother's belongings when she passed. I would rather think of a memory or look at a photo of her. You seem very sad in this video. I hope you feel better soon. I'm glad you know when you need to take a break. Just take it a step at a time. ❤
I just finished recycling lots of craft magazines and patterns that I had been keeping for far too long. I kept thinking I would use them but never did and now when I get a pattern I get it as a download and store in my computer. I only print it off when I begin the actual project and I have a strict rule about only buying enough for one project at a time. I don't want my daughter to be left in your position. That amount of fabric is going to be difficult to move! Thanks for sharing your journey, you are inspiring me to leave only the necessities behind when I leave. Take care of yourself, you are doing so well! It's nice to see such a lovely home emerging from the clutter!
Hi Mindy. I’m glad to see you know when it’s time to quit working and go home to rest. It’s important to take care of yourself. I think that it might be wise to hold onto that scrapbook until all of the work is done and you can go through it. It might be a way to get to know your mother’s life and history since she isn’t here to tell you about it.
Something that helped me and might help you is the idea of firsthand sentimental items (have emotional value to you) and secondhand sentimental value (meant something to her). Second hand sentimental items can be let go of with the thought that they were loved by the person who is gone and that is nice, but you do not need the burden of such items. Best wishes as you continue ❤❤❤
Mindy, we see your mom was a saver/hoarder for a long time. She saved that scrap book for 70 years. Good luck on this journey; you're making progress already ❤
Mindy, there are a lot of eBay sellers in Arizona that will travel to make you an offer on almost everything you have, paper goods, knickknacks, craft supplies etc. If you put out a call to them on social media they will get back to you. I’ll message you a few I follow and get advice from.
I hope you get some rest and feel better soon. So important to practice self care during this journey. My husband watches your channel with me. He call you the sad lady. Not to be mean, we both feel for you hugely. Was lovely to see your smile at the end of the video. Take care of yourself!
For one person, you are doing a great job. I had to go through my parents house and I relate to a lot of what you are going through. For the scrapbook or other photos etc, just box it up and review it when you have time. It’s ok to throw out things that don’t mean anything to you.
Wow, she seemed to have a lot of her fabrics and crafts organized somewhat. I see that you start feeling overwhelmed after a while. I hope you take good care and know that you are doing awesome!
We have a place called, friends of the library. They sell bundles of magazines and books. Maybe donate to a place like that. You are doing great! Keep going! I’ve been at this 11 years or more - my kids don’t want it. I keep tossing out, purging, giving away and selling. Selling is tough right now. Sometimes it’s going backwards. You have this! You know what to do, the rest will come. Thank uou for sharing so that you inspire and help others.
Best wishes to you as you go through this difficult process. Your experience and cleaning out my mom's house last year encouraged me to read the Swedish death cleaning book and keep downsizing my possessions while I am still able to. I also found a saying that I shared with all my children about my things bringing me joy and if they do not bring them joy (whatever I have left when my time comes) they should set them free. The purpose of my things is not to bring others joy, and I don't want anyone to be burdened by them or feel the need to keep them if they don't want them. I once cleaned out the home of a hoarder who was much less organized than your mom, so I regularly do a clean out of the house to keep things moving on.
I like that saying! I'm sure my mom wouldn't want me to keep anything that doesn't bring me joy. A few other people have recommended the Swedish Death Cleaning book, I should really read it.
I don't suppose your cat met Mr Cat yet? The place is starting to look a lot better just by you putting boxes on top of each other. It still is a very beautiful house with a lot of light and one day it will look amazing!
Thank you! I agree, it is a beautiful house. I love the skylights in it. I always keep Mr. Cat away from my cat because I don't want them to introduce diseases to each other.
hi , find a local quilting place . They can help you with all the quilting items . They even might have ideas for the quilting magazine and books as well.
Haha! I know that last smile was forced. You're so sweet. You're making great progress, even if it's just putting like with like, it'll help time wise when it comes to selling it all. As for the scrap book...if there's anything that speaks to you, keep it and toss the rest of it. Don't feel you need to keep it just because it was your moms. They were her memories and only had meaning for her.
You’ll have no problem selling fabric or sewing items and even patterns. Fabric is not inexpensive so I’m sure it would be an easy sell. The craft magazines would probably sell too. I was a magazine hoarder, I had every type os Martha Stewart magazine, craft magazines,....well piles of them for each hobby to be honest. When we moved from the farm the thought of having to pack up all the magazines and haul them along was just too much. I sorted them into like piles and tied them in bundles with string. The day we had a yard sale I set them out on a sheet on the lawn with a sign that said free to good homes. They were quickly gone and the people who took them were actually interested in the subjects and were delighted to get them. Knowing that made me feel better about letting them go. I wish you the best as you navigate this journey you are on, it’s not an easy one.
Girl, you are doing amazing!! Don’t be afraid to throw things away. That is a lot of stuff to try and sell/give away. Sometimes it’s ok to trash things. Keep up the good work! ❤
Hi Mindy, you are doing such a great job, don’t overlook the fact it is only a short time since your mum died. You are still in the grieving process. You sound less drained mentally in these videos than when you started putting it on line. My suggestion would be just to go gradually it is just after Christmas people are tight for money. Just do as you plan totally empty your lounge then bring back in things to sell. Categorise items in different rooms, just luck in her craft room take out anything that isn’t craft. Then look for everything crafty and put into that room. Then move onto another room do similar in that. good luck and best wishes to you.
There are ephemera collectors who'd love the things in your mom's scrapbook. There's a market for everything, lol. I wonder if Mr. Cat belongs to a neighbor and just comes by for an extra meal? I hope so. You're doing a great job. It's good to spread the mental load over shorter trips. All the best to you and your kitty.
I have a box of things I’ve saved over the years like concert tickets or cards that were extra special. I also have a note in there for my daughters to have fun looking through it and then throw it away. Get some rest 😊
I’ve only just watched about 1/2 of your post today and I just want to tell you what a good job you’re doing. It sounds like you’re hitting your stride and as I hear you “staging” areas, I say YES! Great idea. It’s a long process with a lot of shuffling around of items. I completely understand the idea of STACKING AS HIGH AS YOU CAN! You’re doing GREAT 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I would keep your mum book. I wish I had the opportunity to go through her stuff. My sibling who got the house is and was really not good to my mum and me.
Thank you for sharing the scrapbook and message to go through those things with your kids while you’re with them!My parents and I were just going through pictures and things today and have nice old ones we will get rid of because we don’t know who they were but really wish we did. We worked to piece together who they might be but in the end many we just can’t figure out. But at least we had a great time and I learned who many were and what many keepsakes were so I can pass that down to my kids and grandkids.
You could put a large amount of same stuff together. Example bathroom stuff and sell a box at super cheap price. $10 for the whole box. Or entire book collection $100
I wouldn’t separate everything. Just have one big sale for the living room stuff and let people know you will have future craft sales also. Just get everything you want out of the living room and do a sale.
You’re doing great! I hope you understand the progress you’ve made even if it’s just to organize areas! Some people are going to love all the quilting supplies! You might want to go to a fabric/quilting store to advertise the sale when you have it ready.
Hi, Mindy. You are getting a lot of sorting and organizing done and that’s great. In Texas, we have some outstanding estate sale companies that come in and stage the whole house. You don’t have to move a thing, it’s priced fairly as second-hand merchandise, they have a team that comes in to run the sale for security purposes, and at the end they pay you and make sure the house is empty, even if the remaining portion of it is donated. I’ve been an ephemera collector and retailer for 15 years, and the best advice I can give you is don’t throw anything away. Let the company help you; it’s worth the money to take the stress off. People like me love anything from old photos to wrapping paper to old grocery bags, old books missing their covers, tickets, greeting cards, playing cards, old office supplies ( old used pencils are my favorite), old notebooks, ledgers, letterhead, kids books, and more. Fabric, too! I think it would be well for you to do one big sale with help. Books sell really well at estate sales. Clothing, household, tools, toiletries… people will buy anything. I’d be happy to make an offer on the scrapbook and other ephemera you find. Wishing you the best of luck. XO Birdie
Hopefully I can give you a few words to help you through this. I can only assume you are an only child. If you don’t have biological children and you know you never will, don’t let guilt make you keep it. I am 70 years old. I felt for years I had to keep things because they were my grandmothers or my mom. I now know I only need a couple of things the keep the good memories for me. I have children but they have no interest in my things or my mothers etc. If a couple of things keep me happy, then I know overwhelming my children with my crap after I’m gone is no gift. Your mental health is more important than $15-$20 here and there. 💕
I am an only child and I don't have children and will never have children. You do bring up a good point that has been weighing on me lately. I have nobody to pass my things onto and therefore nobody to pass my mom's things onto, yet I feel bad getting rid of some things that my mom put so much effort into keeping and maintaining. It's definitely something I need to do more thinking about and perhaps change my mindset.
That's awesome! I had a "scrapbook" like that, I made it in photography class in high school that I filled with photos and stuff. It's already in a box at my oldest daughters house along with all of my photos.
Loved seeing your progress on the kitchen & bathroom this trip! I know you said your cat doesn't climb well, but maybe she knocked down the bear figurine?
I have that scrapbook. I’ll be sure to go over it with my daughter soon. Once I’m gone, she can deal with it And you’re doing a wonderful job! Whatever way she feels is right for her. Thank you for that valuable bit of advice.
Paper crafters, and book makers, specifically junk journal makers would love that scrapbook. If there’s a local Facebook group, I’m sure that will get snapped up. They would also be interested in magazines, books, and fabric. I know a couple of junk journal makers in Arizona but I don’t know if they’re in the same area, one is in Peoria. I’m not sure where the other one is I think in the Phoenix area.
@@chickabiddiesI make junk journals and that scrapbook would definitely sell on line. I have my mother’s scrapbook from the 1930s-1940s and it’s now in the loving possession of my daughter. It contains a valentines card from my father to my mother from about when they were both in 3rd grade! We may not know much about the individual items but it’s fascinating to see another era displayed in paper and keepsakes!
I'm sorry you're not feeling well. I know it's slow going, but you're doing it. There is so much good advice, here in the comments, about what to do with the things you mentioned. Also, you may not care about it now, but I wouldn't get rid of the scrapbook. There may be a time that you really regret it. I save memory type things, and I was once urged, by a friend, to get rid of something. I regret it very much. It hearts my heart that I let it go. I'm glad the kitty seemed to feel a bit more comfortable. I hope you're feeling better.😊
That was a lot of heavy lifting to move all those boxes into the bedroom no wonder you're exhausted! Glad your cat had a bit of mum time on the bed with you, bless her heart. That's a bonus the library is going to pick up the books. That will be a big space cleared, they're going to a good cause and it's a load off your mind. I'm sure the magazines will go if you put them out for free or advertise them. People love free stuff. You're doing great, chipping away and getting stuff done. It's frustrating when the weather is holding you back because it's out of your control, but at least you're not on a specific time scale. I know I'm not the only one who is really rooting for you and invested in your journey. Take care 💐, I meant to ask your cats name. I have four (two sort of snuck their way in 😊) Eric and his sister Pudding, Barney and his sister Mavis 😻
Thank you for the encouragement! My cat's name is Coconut but I just call her Coco. I had 5 cats for a long time but sadly 4 of them have gone to the Rainbow Bridge over the past few years and Coco is the only one I have left. She's 19 so the time we spend together is precious to me. I love the name Pudding! One of my cats was named Muffin.
Keep the scrapbook for now. Toss when you're truly ready. But yes, share your stories now. We treasure our grandmother's scrapbook but it's full of pictures of her, her family and friends.
Something that might help is tackling a category that has many small but not valuable in resell. Example : all books. They don’t really sell well and are a pain in the butt to deal with for quantity you seem to have. Have you tried one load in your car just to test it out for you. That might also help. Even 4-6 boxes. Passenger, back seat and truck filled up.
Do you have any relatives of your mom or dad that can fill in any missing pieces that you may have. Regarding yard sale, maybe next time you are at the house, set a sign outside that says “Indoor Yard Sale” and have the things you want to get rid of in the living room. Start with whatever is already in the living room.
You gave us a little picture of your parents life last time and why you think your Mom became a hoarder. I get the impression from your reaction to that scrap book that you and she were not close. That is sad but makes me understand how you seem to react to all this.
There's too much stuff here to display it all at once, so I decided to use the living room as the "sale area" and then add more things as stuff gets sold and more space is cleared.
I would clear out the garage first. Then you have a staging area for the rest of the house contents and a more controlled space for the sales. Hire a professional organizer to help you.
I was thinking Facebook in the future, join all the local quilting groups. Then just advertise on them when you have time. I did like the other posters idea about quilting classes at schools. I don’t know how many do that anymore, but that would be a good idea for donating stuff that doesn’t sell.
Posting some of the quilting supplies on Facebook for area quilting groups is a great idea. I zoomed in and saw layer cakes of Starry and Speckled. Both are in such high demand that new colors are being added to each range, and Starry, once limited edition, has been reprinted. If you want to make a little money, those items would sell very well. And as other folks have said, craft donations are welcome at schools, assisted living facilities, community centers, etc. Take care of yourself, and thank you for sharing an intimate journey with us ❤
I’ve been thinking about the amount of things in your moms house and thought this might help for the craft items: If you can, is it possible to sort through the craft room and put “like with like” (fabric pile, notions pile, patterns, magazines, etc). Even if it’s stacked up. Keep all the “craft” stuff in that room only, to get it out of the bedroom so you have another clear room to relax in. Anything not crafting, put in the living room (I can’t remember how many rooms your moms house has). As you start to get rid of other stuff, you can start sorting through the craft items a bit more to have sales. Buttons together, zippers, similar fabrics/themes. Sewing as a craft is huge, so I suspect if you’re able to get it all together, you could sell a lot of it. Maybe post flyers around the town as well when you have the dates you want to do fabric sales. Like maybe it’s “every Wednesday from 10-4 until quantities last”. Do bundle deals, like a bunch of holiday fabrics together with notions or “colour” deals (all the pink fabric, etc). You could do “theme” craft days so it helps you sell categories at a time. Maybe some people are just looking for green fabric. Great about the library! That should free up a ton of space!
Good idea to call the library. They always seek donations for their sales. They may take the magazines too and any music cds, dvds, jigsaw puzzles, and games.
Books sell….go on Facebook marketplace and advertise next time you are at your moms. A crafter would come in and make you an offer on the fabric. Use the internet to help you. You can find local groups in your moms area to sell things to on marketplace.
I agree. The library is a great 9:57 place to donate. Unless I really needed the money that the books would bring I would donate as much as possible. Peace of mind goes a long way.
I’ve posted two Facebook links to show you how a lady in my area is selling fabric in lots organized by color. The two comments I’ve left you are gone.
Hard but try not to overthink things, you are becoming overwhelmed. As for the quilting stuff, why not donate to a worthy organization, i.e. one that makes quilts for hospice or active military, veterans, abused womens shelter. It could be gone quickly and with meaning. Great progress with thinking ahead and donating and recycling. ❤
I do tend to overthink everything, it comes with being a perfectionist. LOL A lot of the quilting stuff is brand new in the package and worth a lot of money. Although donation is always an option, I would like to try to sell at least some of it and get some money for all of the work I've been doing. Whatever doesn't sell I will probably end up donating.
I agree. Someone once made a comment that she never smiled. She will in her own time. Her smile will be beautiful when it is genuine. I hope she doesn't feel pressured to be something she is not. She's doing great, especially on her own.
It's so hard, isn't it. I know when my Dad passed, I had to go through everything, and I had no idea why he kept anything sentimental either. Some ideas for dealing with the stuff are talking to second hand book stores about taking some books off your hands. For the scrapbook, some historical societies like to collect journals, scrapbooks, newspapers, etc. for their collections. Also, if you want help, there are some TH-cam channels that help people clean and declutter for free if you let them film it. I'm not sure who would be local to you, but this is one channel I watch @reneeshull

I 2as going to say the same sort of thing. Maybe an aunt could she'd some light on the things in there.
I'm glad your cat is doing better, it has to be hard on her too. Your mom's home looks like it's really nice and you're bringing it back!
One of my mother’s newspaper clippings was an obituary that eventually lead to me finding a whole branch of the family. Scan or photograph everything carefully for later investigating

A couple ideas on the scrapbook....1. take some pictures of it and release it or 2. save a couple items and release it.

I think he belongs to a neighbor, he seems well cared for.
Glad to hear it! I'm a cat lover with a number of rescues and appreciate your kindness to the felines @@chickabiddies
I have a box of things I’ve saved over the years like concert tickets or cards that were extra special. I also have a note in there for my daughters to have fun looking through it and then throw it away. Get some rest 😊
It is so nice to see your smile at the end. You are so sweet!
You’re doing GREAT 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Love seeing your smile!
The scrapbook is amazing. A junk journallers dream!
You did so much 😊 take care of yourself
I would keep your mum book. I wish I had the opportunity to go through her stuff. My sibling who got the house is and was really not good to my mum and me.
Thank you for sharing the scrapbook and message to go through those things with your kids while you’re with them!My parents and I were just going through pictures and things today and have nice old ones we will get rid of because we don’t know who they were but really wish we did. We worked to piece together who they might be but in the end many we just can’t figure out. But at least we had a great time and I learned who many were and what many keepsakes were so I can pass that down to my kids and grandkids.
Smart in stacking your mom’s room up. That will clear just some space to work in.
Good idea, thank you!
You're doing great! You're doing good! Keep up the good work! Hello from the heart ❤️ of Illinois USA 🇺🇸
XO Birdie
Thanks for the advice Birdie. I will be sure to keep any more ephemera that I find.
You are making progress! :)
I would keep the scrap book!! ❤❤
You achieved so much this trip!
Sending you loving kindness as you move through. You’re doing great ❤
Thank you so much!
Woman shelters is one that picks up a lot of stuff. Daycares and schools would love craft stuff.
Your making good progress. Hopefully you can have a big estate sale in the spring.
Thank you! And my cat would not be able to jump onto a 6 foot tall bookcase, she can't even jump onto the bed. She's 19 and has arthritis.
I have that scrapbook. I’ll be sure to go over it with my daughter soon. Once I’m gone, she can deal with it
And you’re doing a wonderful job! Whatever way she feels is right for her. Thank you for that valuable bit of advice.
Good job. You might not see the improvement but we do.😊
Save making decisions about "sentimental items" like the scrap book until last. It gives you time to think on it.
This is a great idea, thank you so much!
Yes, junk journal makers would go nuts for the items in the scrapbook... especially those beautiful old cards!
Yes, I love finding scrap books.
Thank you! I'll be holding onto the scrapbook for awhile, until everything is cleaned out and I can really think about what I want to do with it.
I would rent a larger car and fill it up with stuff to take to local charities. Take a few trips. The cost might be worth it.
My car is a sports car. I can fit one box on the passenger seat and that's it. There is no back seat. The trunk is the size of a duffel bag.
I have loved watching your journey. Do you think you could film the process of cleaning each room? Like set up your camera on time-lapse?
Thank you! I always intend to film the process of me cleaning but somehow forget. 🤣 I will try to do more filming on my next trip.
❤

Do you have any relatives of your mom or dad that can fill in any missing pieces that you may have. Regarding yard sale, maybe next time you are at the house, set a sign outside that says “Indoor Yard Sale” and have the things you want to get rid of in the living room. Start with whatever is already in the living room.
You gave us a little picture of your parents life last time and why you think your Mom became a hoarder. I get the impression from your reaction to that scrap book that you and she were not close. That is sad but makes me understand how you seem to react to all this.
Usually estate sales are the whole house not just one living room
There's too much stuff here to display it all at once, so I decided to use the living room as the "sale area" and then add more things as stuff gets sold and more space is cleared.
I would clear out the garage first. Then you have a staging area for the rest of the house contents and a more controlled space for the sales. Hire a professional organizer to help you.
?Can you order a large dump truck
good the library will come get the books, make sure you flip thru the pages to make sure no hidden $ inside.
maybe the holiday moved the trash collection back a day
Did your mom have any friends you could ask? Or any sisters? They might know about the scrapbook
🌺👍👍🌺
Take care of yourself, and thank you for sharing an intimate journey with us ❤
💖
I’ve been thinking about the amount of things in your moms house and thought this might help for the craft items:
If you can, is it possible to sort through the craft room and put “like with like” (fabric pile, notions pile, patterns, magazines, etc).
The craft room is pretty full already, so there will have to be "overspill" into another room. Great ideas for the crafting sale, thank you!
I believe TH-cam deletes comments that contain links.
If it was me I would literally throw out the magazines. Yes, I know there's tons of ideas in them for other quilters but honestly they're just trash.
Yup, recycle the whole lot and be done with them.
I would trash/recycle them but there's too many for the curbside trash bin and they won't fit in my car to take to the dump.
Thrifters pay good money for magazines and craft books. Her moms things are clean and in good condition not garbage.
Have an auction and be done. What doesn't sell? Get a dumpster.
Oh,that forced smile is sooo painful.
I agree. Someone once made a comment that she never smiled. She will in her own time. Her smile will be beautiful when it is genuine. I hope she doesn't feel pressured to be something she is not. She's doing great, especially on her own.
goeie genade..zo schiet t niet op he. staan klagen voor de camera. Geef alles toch gewoon weg als je er zo erg mee zit.
You don’t need to be nasty. If you feel you need To go do it on your own channel
