Wow, seeing this has brought back so many old memories. 54 years ago I lived 8 houses away from the Wayne's and was good friends with Ethan and one day Duke and Ethan showed up at my house and asked my parents if it's OK to take me on vacation to Mexico for 2 weeks on the Goose. Mom Dad and me were just a little bit in shock and as surprised as could possibly be. Was the coolest boat ride I've ever had and an experience and memory like no other and will cherish it forever. Duke brought his sons Micheal and Patrick, John Ford I think and Ethan and I, Burt and a crew member or 2. So strange to see her again after 54 years, I totally just relived the best vacation in my life. Thank you very much Mr. Wayne, I'll never forget what you gave me back then as a 14 year old neighbor, friend and fan. I love you Duke and enjoy seeing your movies on METV the last year. What an amazing career and life you had. Thanks again for the best time ever and Aloha buddy, we all miss you. Maybe I'll see you again some day on the Wild Goose. As a boat captain, I think I loved that ship as much as he and Burt do. Was so much fun...

What an amazing opportunity, and you are so deserving of it! All I could think is how relaxed he must have been, and how much fun he must have had with his children & Grandchildren on the Wild Goose. I didn't become a John Wayne Fan till I was in my 40's. I was dating a fella that just loved him & we would watch a handful of film every weekend. Rio Bravo & McClintock we're my two favorites, but I really enjoyed them all!

I have loved this man starting at 4 years old , my daddy and I watched all his movies and he reminds me of my daddy . I am 60 now . What I wouldn’t have done to meet that man and his family
When I was about 33 years old (1978?) I worked at Rowe Machine Works in Ballard, WA. The Wild Goose was on the drydock getting the hull repaired and fresh paint. I'm not sure what all was being refurbished or modified, because I worked inside the machine shop. But when it was time for the Wild Goose to come off the drydock, they asked for volunteers to man the lines and prevent damage. I volunteered, along with about everybody else in the company. John was in his last month or two of life, and was hospitalized, but somebody made up a huge "Get Well" card and we all signed it. He was a good guy and patriot.
That was pretty cool and that was really nice of you guys to send him that card

Great video, my friend John & I had the wonderful experience of being on one of those harbor dinner cruises. Being the only 2 guests in line wearing cowboy hats, Hornblowers captain came up to us and invited us up to the wheelhouse after dinner. I have photos of both of us taking turns steering the yacht in Newport harbor ( by the spokes only, of course) another point of interest is that the Hornblower yacht "MOJO" sitting next to Wild Goose was originally built for Richard Nixon, and later in its life was owned by George C Scott.

@@gardensofthegods "Tried enlisting". He had enough clout, to get into some kind of uniform. The same way as other Hollywood actors such as Clark Gable did. He could easily have joined the U.S. Army’s First Motion Picture Unit. Actors and technicians in uniform made promotional and instructional films, chiefly for the Army’s Air Forces. At least there, he would have been contributing to the war effort.
Instead, he kept making just one more pointless film. And of course, after a few of these, the war was over.
It's laughable to see him play the tough guy. Especially in the film, "The Longest Day", where he plays a WWII hero on D-Day. What an insult to the men who were actually there for real. How did he live with the shame of it?
@@sandgrownun66 After I replied to you yesterday I looked at another documentary about him that I'd actually seen before and forgot about the part where it says he was just starting to get his big break where he would have been making much more money and with better films and then the war broke out .
It says that he was towards the higher end of where they would not normally want guys his age in action .
He had 4 kids and decided it was better to go for the money and the career ... so if all this is true I certainly have to say somehow he did get lucky , didn't he , where either America was very forgiving or perhaps they didn't even know any of this and thought whatever the Hollywood publicity machine had fed them was the truth ?
He did have some problems in his career afterwards where he lost millions $ producing movies that did not give much in the way of returns at the box office ... he also got ripped off by his manager for a fortune and ended up basically broke .
... then he ends up having one of his lungs removed ... and living quite some time with only 1 lung ... only to end up with stomach cancer which if you think about it , must be pretty unbearable ... he was probably in pain every time he ate or drank ... Plus in his later years , his fairhful wife Pilar ended up divorcing him .
... so , it sounds like his karma had a way of catching up with him .
I guess he deluded himself into thinking he did what he had to do to support his family even though other guys had kids but still went into the service .
No wonder why he loved his houseboat it's so beautiful, John Wayne had good taste in boats.

I have and still do, live a fortunate life and I've been able to spend time, either for private parties, or working, at and on some legendary homes, yachts, hotels, cathedrals, historical buildings, in and around Los Angeles, and SoCal. One private party was aboard this beautiful, iconic ship, Wild Goose.
You did a good job of showing the rooms and interesting points of the vessel, but a person has to actually be aboard to see the detail, the love and the money spent making this a wonderful home for The Duke.
It has been about 30 years since I had the privilege of being a guest for a great party on this ship. Just as a personal interesting fact, back around the same time that I was on this ship, I had worked at a topless girls nightclub which was named The Wild Goose. This ship is on the top five of my top twenty legendary places I've been a guest or worked at, like The Playboy Mansion, Greystone (Doheney Mansion), Frank Lloyd Wright Jr's Sowden House, Pickfair Manor( home of Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, Presidential Suite at The Biltmore Hotel, just to name a few of the many cool places.

All I can say is LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS MAN. I was two years old when he passed away. My addiction, if you will lol, came from my grandmother, who pretty much raised me. She was quite possibly the biggest John Wayne fan, junkie on this planet!! If they had made John Wayne wallpaper, I’m pretty sure her entire house would’ve been wrapped in it😂. I am so glad you got to take that tour and being the junkie that I am, I truly did not know that his wife was that incredibly talented with her painting. She truly had a gift as well.
We loved it! One of my favorite actors. An icon of my childhood years (He died a week after my HS graduation). Plus a navy ship that was his yacht which I had no idea even existed. Thanks for sharing this.

What an awesome tour and worth the 30 minutes to take...John Wayne has been my hero for my whole life...and he was always BIGGER THAN LIFE to me. Started watching films of him with my dad when I was a little girl and he was my favorite since then. I have a lot of his memorabilia and enjoy it so much. The WILD GOOSE did not disappoint...what a wonderful trip into yesteryear with all that beauty...the woodworking, the awesome art, and the feeling that "The Duke" had just stepped onboard with me. Just to see the chairs that he sat in, the bar, his bedroom, beautiful pictures, and all that he loved and cherished just gave me chills..No wonder he never wanted to leave the decks..John Wayne slept HERE! Awesome! Thank you for this marvelous Tour!

My son was born on J Waynes birthday & being from Tx , many know when his birthday is..
My son came home from school when he was about 10 yrs old & asked me who J Wayne was..
I told him & asked why he asked..
He said, an older security officer at school told him he had the same birthday .
Now he's 22 & he knows J Waynes movies will be playing all day .
He's probably seen most of his movies at this point & he loves his cowboy movies the most.
I would watch John Wayne movies with my Dad. John Wayne reminded me of my Dad. Thank you so much for sharing your video. It brought back some very precious memories. John Wayne was the best!!

Great job on this video! I have great memories from growing up in the Newport Beach area, and living there to this day. One of my favorites was from the "Duke" himself. It was 1978, I was around 15. He just got out of the hospital from open heart surgery a day or two before, somehow my dad heard there was going to be a "boat parade" in his honor in front of his house (the bay side of a house is considered the front). When we arrived at his house there were only 5 boats or so, I thought that was a little strange, but we all drove around in a circle, but then to my amazement, out walks John Wayne, by himself in his bathrobe, to say hi to all of us! He was always my hero, but man, he solidified that position for me that day. We have Polaroid pics somewhere. As far as the Wild Goose, I have driven my boat past her many a late night (or early morning) going back to my slip after serious good times, always hoping to see something (I hear on good authority she is haunted, more on that in a moment). A really good friend of mine got married on that ship about 10 years ago and Hornblower was fantastic, I've been on quite a few of their cruises and they never fail to deliver, I highly recommend them. I know the head chef of Hornblower Cruises so I requested he be our chef for the wedding, he agreed to do it, and because of this, I too was able to have full access to the ship. Us groomsmen and the groom were fed a specially prepared meal and catered to in the "card room", we ate while seated at the card table and sat in those chairs, it was incredible to say the least. Boy, to be a fly on the wall back in the day, the who's who of Hollywood played cards to the wee hours of the morning in that room, can you imagine the things that were talked about? One time I asked my friend (the chef) if he thought the ship was haunted, he said many times he has come back to the ship in the morning after being the last one on board and has found lights on, doors open or things moved around as well as hearing things throughout the ship, he has many stories, to this day he won't go to the lower parts of the ship alone at night. @@gardensofthegods That was true. I read that his family put a marker on his grave in 1998, almost 20 years after he was buried. He is buried at Pacific View Memorial Park in Corona Del Mar which overlooks the ocean.
I lived on Lido Island. Across the water was the Goose. After his death it went through all sorts of indiscretions. The current state is “optimistic” but not at all assured. The neighbor kids all clamored on board for the summer filming of a moving in Alaska. Great memories.
John Wayne will always hold a special place in our hearts. Our favorite actor. How absolutely beautiful and what a thrill to experience this. You did a fabulous job in capturing all it's glory! You are the best!❤❤

You did a fantastic job at giving us a video tour of the Wild Goose. One thing that i think was the best feature of your tour was your identifying the differences between what we see and what he would have experienced in the ship such as the pictures and posters. Too many tours or displays make you think the site is authentic as when the site was active whether it was with the owner or time in history. Your expressing the awe of the original items or the disappointment of changes made really capture how one would feel if they were there. Your description of how he would have felt in real life about the pictures and what he had on the walls made your tour not only informative but heart warming. Great job.

I worked at a boat marina in Big Bear Lake, CA in early-2000’s and they had a Boston Whaler for rental that was apparently owned by John Wayne and was carried on the Wild Goose. It was still in really good shape, despite being used as a rental boat. We referred to it as the Duke
Another wow. When I went to Mexico with the Wayne's on the Wild Goose, I remember that Boston Whaler strapped to the upper deck with a cover over it. I think there was another one upside down up there too. I water skied behind that Whaler. I remember Aiisa cruising newport in a Whaler with a Mercury 50 hp on it. Was very fast. The Duke pulled me skiing and showed me how to drop one ski to single ski. Was so strange looking at the boat thinking, this is so surreal! I'm looking at John Wayne in a bathing suit pulling me water skiing. It was hard to concentrate on skiing. All I kept thinking is the Duke is pulling me water skiing. If I tell someone when I get back to newport about this, I don't think they'll believe me. Thanks Duke, I went on to be a decent single skier. Could make all 6 boys at 34 mph and 28 off the line. Thanks for posting this about the whaler on the Goose I used to lean against when on upper deck. Like when they all showed me how to shoot a gun for the first time. Duke gave excellent instructions on position and proceedure and most of all to respect it and only used properly. Duke finishes and says, OK, now go ahead and squeeze the trigger slowly. The target was in the water 100 ft or more away and the boat was not still. I missed the first shot but with him adjusting my elbow position, he says now try again slower. I aim and squeeze and bingo, got it on the 2nd try as he smiles and says, thata boy. Folks, I think we have a sharp shooter here. Patrick and Micheal sound off saying, beginners luck. I just smiled and thought, wait till I tell my friends at school about this. Wow. Thanks again for posting this. I never thought I'd here about that Whaler again. Amazing what surprises lurk online. Thanks for the memories, Refreshed. Aloha.

I used to watch old westerns with my father and he loved all the great ones and especially John Wayne as I did myself. Of course most of the westerns he did had already played out in theaters by the time I was going to them so I think the first movie I saw him in a theater was Brannigan and he was probably in his 70's then but, still action packed.
P.S. I have the worst habit of making a comment before video is done. This ship or vessel is amazing even in today's standards so imagine what it must have appeared like when it was first completed.
In WW2, the Fairbanks-Morse Company went from building railroad locomotive engines to Marine engines.. same engine, just a different application. Great vlog of an American Icon, the Duke!

I lived in SoCal growing up and spent part of the summers in the '60's in Avalon on Santa Catalina Island and recall the excitement that would 'rumble' through town when the Wild Goose was anchored in the harbor..people hoping to catch a glimpse of John Wayne. What a treat to come across this video and your channel! Subscribed!! What a great job you did ...heartfelt and mesmerizing to the end...I'll be watching more of your work. Very nice of the owners leave you make this video and give you exclusive walk-about. You did a nice job of narrating your video. It was also nice that you respected the boat and John Wayne that didn't touch anything that you felt was not appropriate. Thumbs up..... If I was rich, I'd want my own private boat too, even if not as pretty. Awwwwww you dog is so precious.

I lived on Balboa Island for three years as a child. I would fish off of Davey's locker, on the Pavilion ( It's In the first pic his daughter painted). The Wild Goose, on at least three occasions, with the Duke at the helm and his daughter on the top deck, waived to me and my father as they steered through the harbor. John Wayne was a legend and my father and I cherish those memories ! Thanks Jordan, just subscribed .
