Musicians want to be making the best music possible, so they don't have a lot of loyalty when they can get with a better band. Notice that Ringo simply abandoned his band at a moment's notice. Grace Slick did the same thing. She was asked to join the Jefferson Airplane and just abandoned her band. But look at the music that came out of the Beatles and the Jefferson Airplane! The Beatles fired Pete Best in a crappy way, but they knew Ringo was much better, and they even liked him better. Then George Martin--the one person willing to give them a break--confirms what they already knew: Pete Best is not up to snuff as a drummer. It was a tremendously awkward situation, but if they could get Ringo, they were going to do it.
You also gotta think that Pete didn’t want it, there was many times where Pete would not turn up to a gigs so that’s how Ringo came in the picture he would play with them when Pete wouldn’t want to.

It's well established Johnny Hutch of The Big Three was regarded as the best drummer in Liverpool at the time, When Brian asked him to join he said "I wouldn't join The Beatles for a fucking gold clock!" It could never have worked out anyway. He was loyal friend of Pete, his personality DEFINITELY didn't fit in with the others and John Lennon was scared of him. At one of the three shows he sat in with The Beatles after Pete was sacked he told John "If I find out who worked to get Pete out I'll smash him and the lot of you." and Hutch always meant what he said.
@@acajutla It takes alot more than just being good at your instrument to get anywhere. Pete Best was a good drummer, but he was just too heavy on the kick drum, and didn't have the same strength on the snare or other parts. That's where Ringo was better. He just had a better feel of the drum set as a whole.
Best vs Starr of The Beatles reminds me of Paul Di'Anno vs Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden. Paul was good for clubs but bad habits and lack of desire made him a liability in the band's journey to arena rock. Dickinson had the goods.
The only similar example is Dave Mustaine being fired from Metallica during their trip from Los Angeles to New York to record their debut album in 1983.
True, Pete never improved and as John simply said Ringo made a better Beatle. But here's something that nobody has brought up. British bands did not want that "bum" group The Beatles in Hamburg because they were really bad. Without a drummer they couldn't go to Hamburg. Without Pete, The Beatles would not have improved and never have made the big time. Pete's a hero not a zero.
"...because history shows that Ringo was the member of the band..." OK, George.. did it occur to you that history was what you made it in regard to choosing a drummer? It wasn't ordained that Ringo would be the drummer until you guys made that choice. I noticed that George's eyes were kind of rolling as he was talking about Pete Best. You could see a bit of squirm in George's face, because, if I remember right, George lobbied to get Pete kicked out. It is interesting how George distanced himself from any kind of responsiblity by saying that in effect "history had ordained Ringo." George screwed Pete over, and George knew it.
Pete was not screwed over. Everyone who gets fired is not screwed over. Pete was a mediocre drummer. Because he was there from the beginning, or there about, that was his place in the Beatles for perpetuity? I think not. Even Pete’s mommy says they had the right to let him go but they should have been kinder.

"The great drummer of Liverpool". LOLOL Yeah, that's why Ringo's version of, "Love Me Do", was rejected by George Martin, the same as Pete's was. Lmfao! Epstein thought Pete's drumming was plenty good enough, and that if Martin rejected him, he would also reject Ringo, as he was no better or more polished for studio work than Pete was. And Epstein was right, as Martin did reject Ringo's version. That's why the day before Epstein sacked Pete, before calling Ringo, he asked Johnny "Hutch" Hutchison, to join The Beatles, waving the EMI record contract in front of his face. Hutch's answer was, "No. Pete's my friend, and I won't the dirty on him." Which I think speaks volumes about the characters of Hutch and Ringo, as Ringo was also mates with Pete. smh
@@Mario_11 Probably. But that doesn't change the fact that he and Pete were mates, and it doesn't change the fact that Ringo betrayed Pete by taking his job--right there on the band's launchpad to stardom, and after Pete had devoted TWO years of his life to The Beatles. Disgraceful.

Even John Bonham spoke highly of the drumming on The Beatles albums. About the Quincy thing, I'd read that before and pondered it. I think there are a couple of reasons... Ringo said himself that he never practiced. I think George said the same. On the early albums you can hear that his drumming is super tight and metronomic, probably because they were gigging like crazy. On the later albums, when they were no longer touring, it's looser, but much more experimental and ground-breaking (Come Together, A Day in the Life, Strawberry Fields). Rock drummers simply weren't playing the instrument like that before then, weaving all the different parts of the kit into the melodies. Sadly, there isn't much footage of the later albums because they weren't touring. But you can see on the rooftop with Don't Let Me Down the style is much more laid-back but he nails the feel absolutely perfectly. It's the same with Get Back. Do you really think when you watch the rooftop gig that the drums in any way let the songs down? For me they absolutely complement the songs perfectly. Back to Quincy... He is one of the greatest producers of all time and he always hired the very best musicians in the business, to make hit after hit. I can understand why The Beatles, all of whom he criticized as musicians, weren't up to his standard but that's a matter of opinion. The Ramones are a great band, even if they would never be allowed near one of Quincy's sessions. He would certainly never work with someone like Keith Moon either. It's a whole different requirement. What I will say about Ringo is that it's clear that his drumming declined from the 70s onwards, as it was no longer his main focus. I doubt these days he'd be able to play Help as well as he does in that video that I linked. Lars Ulrich is the same. His drumming on the early Metallica albums is incredible but even he can't play it properly these days, and hasn't been able to for a long time, because he hasn't pushed himself as a drummer and kept his practice up, but it doesn't diminish what he achieved before. I'm curious to know what your experience is as a musician? I've met very few people who've actually made a living out of music who don't see the magic in Ringo's drumming and how revolutionary it was at the time.
Ringo never, Pete Best forever! They screwed Pete Best. Those cowards did not even want to speak to him after they forced him out. BTW Beatles, your music sucks. Rolling Stones is the best.

It was a tremendously awkward situation, but if they could get Ringo, they were going to do it.
imagine pete best drumming on "A day in the life" hahah history was kind to us
Wasn't it Ringo who told Jeff Lynn that "I am the click machine"
You also gotta think that Pete didn’t want it, there was many times where Pete would not turn up to a gigs so that’s how Ringo came in the picture he would play with them when Pete wouldn’t want to.

Pete was the most popular with the birds and yet Ringo was the bow on the package.
So Brian called Ringo not John i think after His death writers wanted to make John More than what he was
George gets hit in the eye and then hit by a bus. Bad day indeed lol
Ringo was musically, every bit as important as the other three. Posssibly more important (not including the songwriting ofc)
♡
The popular myth is that they got rid of Pete to bring in Ringo, but that's simply not true. Epstein asked FOUR different drummers to join the band. Ringo was the third to be asked and the only one who said yes. The fourth one was asked to join The Beatles AFTER Ringo had already said yes, but he declined.
Brian may have asked others, but the Beatles themselves probably wanted Ringo as he had played with them before
I wish they would have paid - at least - a little tribute to Pete. They shared their early days; their early memories. Paul and Ringo should meet with Pete as long as they are able to do so. It would be a great gesture to see the surviving Beatles all together. Pete is part of the band‘s History and should be treated as such 😎✌🏻
You know how many groups had different members before they got signed? Happens all the time. We only know of Pete because the Beatles are huge and we all know everything about them.
Queens original singer wasn’t even Freddy Mercury. Nobody is going to pay tribute to the previous singer
Pete and the Beatles didn’t get along too well. The Beatles huge success made Pete get very depressed that he hadn’t been good enough, and it made any meeting awkward
@@thedogwoods5716 This is different than what you describe..he helped build the majority of the actual structure and was replaced literally in the last minute.Had he not dropped everything to go with them to Hamburg,it may not have happened at all.
@@jerry3790 you are revising history. What you say is not true. The only reason they out casted him and gave him no credit after dropping him was to limit they're liability to having to pay money to him for his part in it all.

1:13 "We really started to think we needed the great drummer in Liverpool".
It's well established Johnny Hutch of The Big Three was regarded as the best drummer in Liverpool at the time, When Brian asked him to join he said "I wouldn't join The Beatles for a fucking gold clock!"
It could never have worked out anyway.
If Best or Hutchinson were any good drummers they would have made it in another band.
Now they are only remembered for what they didn't become.
@@acajutla It takes alot more than just being good at your instrument to get anywhere. It takes promotion, good material, proactive supportive managers, like-minded bandmates, suitable record producers and much more.
Brian Epstein ruined The Big Three by making them record and promote material which didn’t suit them like ‘By The Way’ and ‘I’m With You’ and everyone knew it.
Nevertheless, Hutch is still remembered and regarded in Liverpool as one of the best drummers to come from the city.
Same situation with Pete. He didn’t have good management and Decca didn’t do much to promote either Lee Curtis And The All-Stars or The Pete Best Four’s records.
Furthermore his former bandmate Wayne Bickerton pointed out in an 80s interview the Beatle-obsessed media had no interest in Pete’s new bands and only wanted to talk to him about The Beatles so the odds were stacked against them
@@TheMerseySound1 are there any examples available of their drumming skills?

Ringo is widely considered to be one of the great rock drummers.
Those who insist Best is/was better don't care or know about the music, it's just the constant arguing that keep them going.
@@acajutla The only examples of Hutch's playing are his recordings with The Big Three. The best examples being on the Live At The Cavern EP. There is documentary on the band worth checking out called 'Some Other Guys: The Story Of The Big Three'

"Ringo was a better Beatle." - John
Anyone watched the big train sketch of george martin
Pete Best had a lazy foot in his playing, as some of us musicians would say
BEST hit the drums.., RINGOS drums smiles on the music and MAKE it come TOGETHER right now OVER me shoo tom tom tom tom tom .....shhoo...
You're right, Ringo is pure melody! 🎶 He changed the role of the drummer in rock/pop music 👏
All arguing about what? Waste of time, life's too short. Move on, they have.
Ringo was the *4th* choice. Three turned it down before him. So all this they wanted the _best_ drummer is bunkum.
I’m a drummer, and Pete best was a terrible drummer and would have dragged the Beatles down, Pete deserved it
He's still right though. Ringo was the last piece of the puzzle, the perfect fit, they knew it and everyone else soon knew it too
Pete was not screwed over. Everyone who gets fired is not screwed over. Pete was a mediocre drummer. Because he was there from the beginning, or there about, that was his place in the Beatles for perpetuity? I think not. Even Pete’s mommy says they had the right to let him go but they should have been kinder.
@@majipoorcat You tow the standard line.
@@KenTeel what is it that annoys you that Ringo ended up the drummer for the Beatles? Okay, Pete Best after putting in two years didn’t get the everything that came with being a Beatle. Those fellows he thought were his mates ended up not being such good friends to him. That’s the way it goes. History didn’t ordain that would be his life. He got through it the best he could. Got some money from a defamation settlement. Got some more from the anthology. Does that make it good? That’s for Pete to say. If what John, Paul,George did makes a difference to you and you don’t like their music because of it, well that’s your choice. If what they did makes you a better friend to your friends, that great. Blessings.
Shame they told so many lies about Paul throughout the last 60 years..
George was the instigator and they stabbed Pete in the back. It will always be a stain on The Beatles. My god Pete's mom got them alot of their first gigs in the clubs. Paul, George and John didn't do any of that. She arranged many things for them and then they screwed over her son. You never hear that part of the story.
@steve phillips You don't know your ass from your elbow. Explain to me why then before they offered the job to Ringo Brian Epstein offered it to another drummer, Give me a break, they would have been successful with or without Ringo
Who didn’t hear that part of the story? It’s well documented that Mona got them gigs and arranged some things. That didn’t mean they had to keep her lesser talented son as their drummer in perpetuity.
@@majipoorcat I am not going to keep going over this. Here is my point. They had the guy for two years, they could have let him go sooner and they didn't. They get a recording contract then they left him go, give me a break. Also Paul and John didn't have much of a problem with him till George became the instigator for RIngo and he did things behind Pete's back. @@David-tu4dl whether you’re done with it or not I cannot let stand about Pete’s lawsuit. It has nothing to do with the contract and getting fired just as they got a recording contract. It was for defamation from a playboy article in 65 where they allude it that Pete was absent a lot because of popping pills. He never had any cause to sue because of the dismissal. He wasn’t employed. He was a gig worker. Could they have done better by him? Maybe , but what? They didn’t want him playing in the band. There are other marks with the Beatles that are blacker and hopefully they made amends for.

Pete Best was a nice guy, but a very mediocre drummer. He also didn't have the bonds and comradery the other three had. They hung out together all the time. Pete hung out with them once in a while. Also, Pete didn't share the same clever sense of humor the other three had, but Ringo fit perfectly, musically and as the missing ingredient. Any stories that they felt threatened by Pete's good looks are complete BS.
They all three heard the crowds chanting loudly "Pete Best forever, Ringo never!" and still nothing was done to reinstate Pete. Were Epstien and Martin doing Paul's bidding?

Highly unlikely, since it turned out to be an inspired decision that couldn't possibly have worked out better, and Ringo fit like a glove and went on to become one of the most famous and respected drummers in the business 🤷♂️
Pete's my friend, and I won't the dirty on him." Which I think speaks volumes about the characters of Hutch and Ringo, as Ringo was also mates with Pete. smh
Ringo was more mates with George then he was with Pete.

@@Mario_11 No, it wasn't a lot, it was 4 or 5 times. Heck, one cold per year could knock you out of commission for at least that long. And consider this. The other 3 lads took amphetamines to power through the grueling schedule the band had for those two years, playing 7 hours a night, 7 nights a week. Pete declined to partake in the drugs. So if he needed a handful of days off over a two-year period to cope with that kind of grind, who in their right mind would begrudge him that? No one (in their right mind.)

@@bobtudbury8505 Sorry dude, you can't just say the word 'closed' and negate the opinion of Dave Grohl, Stuart Copeland, Tre Cool, Questlove, Abe Laboriel Jr., Phil Rudd, Max Weinberg, John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, George Martin, and drummers like me, who made a living from drumming for years.
