He is wrong about one thing. If you have a topic channel and you have a TH-cam creator channel you can merge them together and make it into an official artist TH-cam channel which will put your music videos and your auto generated distro kid releases all on the same page and you can edit that page at any time once it becomes an official artist channel including bios and videos you can change everything once you have an official artist paint channel

Well it sounds like the upgrade to the Musician Plan is just about choosing your label, which is great, but even more importantly it allows you to choose a release date and have a release schedule. Personally, that's the main reason why I upgraded. But yeah choosing your own "label" makes a huge difference too.
Thanks for your tips! So you made up a kind of record company sounding label like "Sun Records" or whatever, and that's better than the cheaper route where your label is automatically "DistroKid"? What advantage is that? Also what is so great about having a release date?
I have a Musician Plan on Distrokid, and I totally hate it. Main reason: they refuse to acknowledge "ambient" as a genre/subgenre. The lame ass rationale about how digital outlets don't accept the classification is just bullshit. Forget that the term is nearly 50 years old...attributed to electronic pioneer Brian Eno. Even sent them the Wikipedia page on ambient music, and they came back with same BS excuse. Never had a problem releasing AMBIENT RELEASES WHEN I WAS ON CD BABY, so who the fuck works at Distrokid? Third graders? And then, when you try to exit their plan, you have to "purchase" your albums back from them, or THEY WILL HAVE THEM REMOVED from ALL DIGITAL OUTLETS. I don't appreciate the extortive policies of Distrokid, and someone needs to do an exposé on this frickin' racket NOW.

I don't now if I'd recommend paying for the iPhone + Shazam addon for your song releases, especially if you're not getting many streams at the moment
because if your music is being submitted to Apple Music then it will automatically be Shazamable because Apple owns Shazam.
I don't pay for the Shazam addon on distrokid and my music has been Shazamed plenty of times.
You get paid for Shazam’s without buying the add on ?
@@whodfisbk4523 No, because when people Shazam your songs you don't get paid in general. Shazam just allows people to find out more about the song they are Shazaming so they could stream it on whatever platform they want.

exactly. since apple bought shazam, that add-on makes no sense. your songs will be automatically added to shazam if you already have your music in apple music.

@@mwj5368 Sorry, I'm not sure about that. I just remember when I was trying to decide if I should join, I signed up but didn't close the deal, they began sending me offers for a discount. I decided to try it when they lowered their price even more. The reason I eventually cancelled was because I didn't want to continue to have to pay a fee every year (or month if you don't choose a year) and I also wasn't thrilled with the fact that they will remove all of your songs you uploaded to them from the streaming platforms after you cancel. Hi, today I got in my distrokid account and i found my release lost even in all platforms....what reason for that and what have to do??
Never mind he kinda covered it. But obviously that’s part of the set up though is you can edit it after that so I don’t know why he said you can edit it once it becomes official Artists channel you can edit whatever you want without taking the release down

Years of working with DK and TuneCore.
DistroKid is only good for Cover songs imo. Just because they have the most headache-free process to do it. Very straightforward and fast.
However, I think TuneCore wins for everything else. They are very straightforward and with no weird “add-ons” which let’s face it - in DK most of these add-ons should be free.
These are just my 2 cents.
hell na bro tunecore's hella strict on those album covers and capitalization; like, why the fuck do i need to e-mail every time i wanna capitalize all letters on my track? that shit's str8 ass
@@scanialover can’t speak on full capital letters track names cause I never tried. But cover songs was my whole point. With TuneCore I had to wait 7+ months for a cover approval which wasn’t even relevant by the time I reached 8 months and I just cancelled and cut my losses. Cover was completely irrelevant by that time. DK wins with Cover songs 100%. Took me a week to get a Justin Bieber cover approved.
TuneCore is pure garbage. I've paid 50 euros for a one year subscription. I made a mistake in one of my releases, it went to another artist profile, they were uncapable to change the Metadata to solve the issue. My other 10 releases were waiting almost 1 month to br released, one day I became 10 e-mails telling me that there were problems in each one (no specifications at all). Went to DistroKid, in less than 12 hours 2 of them are already almost released.

I've been trying to find an answer, from the depths of the web as well as the Distrokid page, but does anyone here know if I can somehow prelisten to the tracks that they sent to the stores? Yeah, I made the possible mistake of ticking the loudness normalization box... Hopefully it's not as bad as some reviewers have said. Thanks in advance.

If you use FL when composing music, i highly advise that you should set your masterbass song loudness between 6 and 9 DB and also use a Youlean Loudness plugin to keep your songs on -14 DB. That is helping a lot when mastering songs.
it totally ruined my song a while back....
I relased 3 singles through distrokid with no problems they even went live on TH-cam music and Anhgami almost in an hour or something
Then now im releasing a 7 songs release (and included the singles in it) i uploaded it on Friday waited tell Monday nothing happened no release anywhere
So i thought maybe abort then reupload may fix... And it didn't

I would like to know: if your artist identity is like "linked" to Distrokid, don't you have later on problems with rights when you put your content yourself in your youtube channel? Like, doesn't it assume you might not be the official artist uploading it and so blocks you?
Luckily no - that only happens if you have TH-cam Content ID on, and you didn't whitelist/allow your video and channel to have the music on there

I would suggest finding someone online to do Mastering - and DistroKid does NOT require that, but you should always master your tracks before releasing

Thanks for your lucid and cogent presentation! I would have never known any of this! I'm very glad I saw this before I joined DistroKid. I recorded at home and a pro engineer remastered it so it is a WAV file and it's of course in stereo. Is that enough or could they for some technical reason say I have to record in a big studio?

You can release ur music w any distributer if u cancel with DK. You can also get a ‘legacy’ on DK which means u pay to have that album there forever despite deleting ur acc w them ❤

I am getting ready for an ep release tomorrow. I plan to upload it tomorrow and set the release date for next Friday 1/28. Will all the sites release it on exactly that day if I set it to that or will it automatically release it when it’s approved?
Yes It will
Late response, but - no. Many platforms (especially Apple) have lengthy approval processes. 1 week is not enough time for them ever, speaking from experience. I’ll upload a release, it’ll be on Spotify (which is typically the fastest at approving songs), then a month later I’ll get an email from DistroKid saying “your release is now live on Apple Music!” as if I care at that point. If you’re very specific about something coming out on all platforms on the same date, upload it 4-5 weeks before that planned date, some companies take forever to approve and release.

This is normal if you are using a free Spotify account. You will hear the song in "shuffle" mode, so it won't necessarily be played first. If you upgrade to a paid Spotify account, you can play a song on demand.

There's a file limit - you might have to convert it to a different file type (mp3, m4a, etc)

I planned release date for feb 10 2024
Then I released my song was up and it’s November
I checked and I accidentally put it for 2023 forgot to change year.
I have now taken the song down but im this song has been getting the most streams I’ve had and I now want to keep them.
So when I re upload I put the IRC code in but if I put that the song has been previously released (accidentally) it no longer gives me the option to make a release date and it’s important that it releases on Valentine’s Day.
So I decided to click that it hasn’t been previously released and still put the irc code. As it gave me the option still. Planned my original thought out release date feb 10 2024 ect. Will it still count my streams that I have already gotten ? As long as the irc is there and everything is the same it should no?

I'm thinking about putting my music on streaming services through distrokid for a while now, but am tentative because most of it has been released on the free music archive under creative common licenses, so artists can use it without hassle for videos et cetera. I wonder if I put it out through distrokid, these used tracks will be copyright flagged. Does anyone know if there are options in distrokid to regulate this? If it is auto released on youtube, other videos using the tracks wont be taken down?

I believe you will have to pay each year for your music to stay on. Don't pin me on that though.
If you pay $50 Leave a Legacy fee, distrokid won't remove your music even if you stop paying your membership bill.

Personally I just suggest going through Songtrust directly, they will sign you up with all the other PROs
