Honestly this helped out so much because I just released my first track and I was not expecting distrokid to be so useful to someone like myself. Patience is a virtue, and virtues are a blessing.
Andy the song was on some platforms on the next day. Spotify around 3 days after. Until the own DistroKid could give me my artist spotify page, today, so 4 business days. Can’t say much about anything else but that! Not being able to select release date for the song with the basic fee really is a pain, so it will randomly be uploaded to Spotify. I wish they could change that (but it is stated in the basic fee that you can’t do it so...) This means that your first song can never be eligible for a Spotify Playlist (because you can do that on “pre-release”, but you don’t have your spotify artist linked to Distrokid before it is released so you cannot apply for the first song basically haha). that’s all I know for now in the first 4 days in Distrokid and 1 song released.
Thank you so much man! We are a metal band called MegaDragon that just started. We literally just finished recording our first song called the "Cult of Cthulhu" and we can't wait to share it with the world. The same old story, fundamentally no money for the artist in distributing digital music. The only people making money out of this are the distribution companies who make more money on the subscription than the artist does on music sales
Friday twentytwo Well that has been the case for six years 😂 I’m a bit lost with my music career to tell you the truth 🤷♂️ the annoying thing is people listen to my music but I don’t get enough money from digital sales to pay my band members to play live. I played live for thirteen years maybe I’ll do something this year 😂or maybe I’ll do something else that has a better balance of effort to reward ratio sounds more appealing 😂
Funny I was just reading the distribution agreement terms. "b. You understand and acknowledge that Digital Stores may retain for themselves a portion of income that they receive from Customers and may deduct or withhold sums from the amount that they pay to DistroKid. Sums retained or withheld by Digital Stores may include, without limitation, taxes and tariffs, administration fees, royalties or fees paid to third parties, wire transfer fees, and credit card processing fees and chargebacks. DistroKid shall be entitled to rely on payments and accountings received from Digital Stores. Any objection relating to any accounting statement or any lawsuit arising therefrom must be made (and/or lawsuit commenced) no later than one (1) year after the date the statement is rendered, and you waive any longer statute of limitation that may be permitted by law. You shall have no right to inspect or audit our books and records, or those of Digital Stores." Pretty sketchy. The section before this mentions processing fees, taxes, tariffs, to distrokid too as well as 20% of what youtube income is received. Hmm. Imma say you get to keep more like 50% of your royalties. No different than a scummy record label it seems.
Rewatching Sanjay here, as I'm planning to start uploading to distrokid soon, so that by 2021 it's ready, small gift to myself😀 Thank you Sanjay for this video!
I know the focus is just the platform of Distrokid, but something I think would be a worth while topic to bring up is Sampled vs Covers vs Original Works. I haven't heard of anyone I know falling into this, but I've been very cautious not to put up any of my remixes or beats on spotify. I don't think enough musicians are actually tackling this tough discussion of sample licenses and cover licenses. If we have learned anything from producers in the past is that lawyers may move slow, but they still move when they're protecting the rights of their clients music. Honestly, with platforms like distrokid offering up the "we'll cover the cover license for you" option, it seems rather silly that artists don't take advantage of new negotiation offers through distrokid to have their works sampled by other artists and determine what percentage of sales they want. It's actually a nice feature of distrokid that you can divvy up sales between people on albums posted up. I understand this may not be your area of expertise, but I feel it's an important thing to keep in mind for any musician trying to protect themselves and their work. The business of being a musician is also important, and this video is a great first step into that.
very interesting ! if i can resume you : let they stream with our sampled song, and take the money later, when they achieved a certain amount of sail ! so finaly they work for free, for us ! as i said the formula could be : i want to be sampled . so you said that distrokid has a a special contract option, that you can be sampled legaly ? if i understood well ! nor this suject is super usefull when we saw lot of that hits that used sampled tune ! and the price of them now in the industry ! nobody has awnser this post yet ... so the option could be left considering waiting to be sampled and request due later as you said before ! or sail sample before the song will out as the option of distrokid ps : not natif english so ... some points i miss writting (..french..)
Thank you man! I've been struggling to find a good distribution service for a while now. I subbed in hopes of seeing more videos like this in the future! This helped me out a lot lol

Just to add a bit of information about "Leave a Legacy", it only protects your music from being taken down when a credit card payment is declined. If you freely discontinue the membership, all your songs will be taken down, no matter what!
Rustling Stillness Yes , Distrokid is not that legit . They won’t give you a 100% commission obviously (*hidden charges ) and you know the other shady things these mofoes do . I saw a video of Indie music where he said that all of his music was taken down by distrokid for no reason and he couldn’t keep his music online if you dont continue their membership for ever . Its better to opt for Bmi and also they secretly charge sudden charges for no fucking reason . 20$ from my bank account was cut for no reason . I emailed them and they were like sorry we dont have any answers to the question . They are scam and piece of scumbags tryna make some money . Thankfully i had only uploaded 2 songs and they weren’t the best of my songs . I was gonna drop my album ( hopefully i didn’t) and i lost my own music forever:( and also they say that . Leave a legacy is a service when the artist dies like wtf ( these motherfuckin bitches are high as hell) it leaves a legacy ,fuck distrokid they suck . Their customer service is pathetic and they also don’t give any clarity to the situation and also have no call service . These bitches are some ugly ass mofoes tryna manipulate Poor independent artists and make them feel bad . Like fuck them all th-cam.com/video/eYUknhwd1Y8/w-d-xo.html
Are you sure of this? Here the founder of distrokid says it won't be deleted... Or am I reading something wrong. www.reddit.com/r/WeAreTheMusicMakers/comments/75rbl2/a_question_about_distrokids_leave_a_legacy
@Ab Yes, I'm pretty sure. If you read the threads carefully (as how Phil and Distrokid phrased it out), they were talking about "letting an account expire", not "cancelling a membership". Distrokid requires users to keep a valid card on their system so the only way to "let an account expire" but not "cancel a membership" is to *trick* the system with a valid card and ensure the card is declined when the next payment is due. Also in Distrokid's own words - "If you manually close your DistroKid account, your releases will be deleted. But your releases won't be deleted because your card is declined or that sort of thing." see distrokid.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360013648233 I will let you decide whether that makes sense or not. Phil, the founder has never made this crystally clear when replying these threads. I don't know why. The feature should be named something like "Payment Failure Protection" or whatsoever. Naming the feature "Leave a Legacy" seems to be deliberately misleading. I have a post elaborating all of these. Take a look if you'd like. medium.com/@rustlingstillness/6-pitfalls-to-know-about-distrokid-f4f12b999a81
Distrokid is no longer monetizing some genres like EDM, Electonic and Hip Hop on some platforms like TH-cam. They are being very quiet about it. But, You can email them and ask.
First off, I love you voice, it's very calming and almost subliminal, do you have any tips on speaking like that? Next, I appreciate this video though it came after I'd signed up for the distrokid service at the full fee (yikes!) Spotify is still not available in Nigeria where I'm from but I'll try to monitor my progress via Apple Music... (By the way I've subscribed and will be watching your other videos to learn more, 👍🏼)
Thanks so much for the compliment. And good luck with your music releases! About my speaking, I don't know if I have any tips...I kind of just speak like that naturally. I am very aware of my international audience, so I try to speak very clearly - pronouncing every sound of every word with intent. I think it helps people whose first language is not English. I'm also sensitive to loud sounds and crowded places and I think it affects how I speak as well. I find it hard to hear and understand people in large crowds, so I think I subconsciously improve my own diction because I fear the same for others. I wish I had a better answer for you. maybe I'll study it more and make a video about it :-)
@@SanjayC Thanks for replying my comment and for being real about it... Believe me I've learnt from this response and started applying what I've learnt from what you may consider not to be a guide on speaking better🤯🤯 Thanks and keep up the good work 👍
I have some bad experience with DistroKid and good one as well. Good one: It's pretty easy to use (good UI and stuff). Many features and a pretty atractive price for the services. Bad one: Their support service. One day I found all of my songs removed from all of the platforms and my revenue was gone. I checked the email in order to find out a reason from DistroKid explaining in details why is that. But I had to contact them in order to find out the reason. And the answer was : " .. music stores told us that it is a fraudulent revenue. We don't have more information. ". I'm like : "Heeeey, what's going on? ))) Who is the recipient of my revenue. Can you be more specific on that problem? Whats next ?" They don't take any risk if they remove your content from their platform. And if you are a small independent artist, if there will be some problems with your content (taxes, claims, etc.), they will asume that it is your fault and for 20$ they will not dive deepper to solve your problem. They will secure themselfs and delete imediately your content and will not tell anything about it. Oh yes, and your revenue will go to them.
Hi Sanjay, Just discovered your channel! Love all the tips and your all around positive vibe... makes me want to produce music again :) Will definitely be checking out your work on Spotify ... Thanks again! :)
Hi Sanjay, first, my best wishes to you for 2020! I would love to hear your and your followers’ thoughts on services like playlist push... I just did a campaign with them that was not successful and wonder what I did wrong (probably mismatched the genre of my track with the targeted playlists ...) All the best! Jeff
Distrokid is really good and cool indeed, Im also trying out Soundcloud Premier distribution, also gives 100% back, however Deezer and Beatport are missing there so far.
@@floodyNumb My DJ/Artist name is Mike Redfields, profile: soundcloud.com/mikeredfields So far I have released all tracks through Soundcloud. And it's easy, they give 100% to the artist and the button is there for every track to instantly monetize and distribute. Plus I usually upload to Soundcloud anyway first so I can privately share to friends before release. Next to that when you change something or delete a track you can also with a click of a button delete it in distribution. So far very happy with it, they only need to add Deezer, Beatport and Traxsource to their distribution program 😀 Good thing about Distrokid extra is Lyrics support, locking of tracks and payments can to wire transfer, next to paypal. I have asked Soundcloud if they will get Beatport and so on and they say they are working on adding it.

This is a great video and you seem really genuine. But I don’t see how it’s an unsponsored opinion when you get paid by people signing up for distrokid with your link? Also I do think this is probably best for a lot of people, but you can’t overlook the fact that distrokid does have other fees (up sells) that can add up if you want your songs on Shazam, or if you want TH-cam monetization. They charge PER song, per year for some of those things. Again it won’t apply to everyone, but it’s important to include that kind of info. Distrokid has to get their money somewhere. Again this is a great video- and all the best on your career and thanks for helping people out

I just started in DistroKid, some days till the song is released. Got my yt visuals and good advice! It's going to be a beatiful journey! Thank you!
Thank you, Nether
How long did it take when your song or songs came to distribution? Have you been satisfied?
@@nether_nl Okay, pretty fast tho. Thank you for the answer 😊👍
Distrokid is the shit been with them for almost 2 years. No complaints.... Cant beat 20 dollars a year to upload music whenever you want to....

@@SanjayC for that ill subscribe...good luck keep helping guys like me good energy comes at the end
Thanks again 🙏🏼
The same old story, fundamentally no money for the artist in distributing digital music. The only people making money out of this are the distribution companies who make more money on the subscription than the artist does on music sales
You could always just do nothing. Then you wouldn't have to worry about anyone ever listening your music.

"b. You shall have no right to inspect or audit our books and records, or those of Digital Stores."
Pretty sketchy.
That's awesome! A big step! Wishing you the best, my friend!
@@SanjayC Thank you soo much ❤️
I know the focus is just the platform of Distrokid, but something I think would be a worth while topic to bring up is Sampled vs Covers vs Original Works.
Good point. I need to learn more about this first. I don't create covers or remixes, so definitely not an expert on this....yet ;-)
very interesting ! if i can resume you : let they stream with our sampled song, and take the money later, when they achieved a certain amount of sail ! so finaly they work for free, for us !
as i said the formula could be : i want to be sampled .
so you said that distrokid has a a special contract option, that you can be sampled legaly ? if i understood well !
nor this suject is super usefull when we saw lot of that hits that used sampled tune ! and the price of them now in the industry !
nobody has awnser this post yet ...
so the option could be left considering waiting to be sampled and request due later as you said before !
or sail sample before the song will out as the option of distrokid
ps : not natif english so ... some points i miss writting (..french..)
Not even half minute in and I'm already subscribed to you. That's a new record
Wow...I really appreciate that! Thanks so much!

Like fuck them all

But your releases won't be deleted because your card is declined or that sort of thing." see distrokid.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360013648233
I will let you decide whether that makes sense or not.

First off, I love you voice, it's very calming and almost subliminal, do you have any tips on speaking like that?
Next, I appreciate this video though it came after I'd signed up for the distrokid service at the full fee (yikes!)
Spotify is still not available in Nigeria where I'm from but I'll try to monitor my progress via Apple Music...
Believe me I've learnt from this response and started applying what I've learnt from what you may consider not to be a guide on speaking better🤯🤯

The most honest video about distrokids, thanks for advice
Whats next ?"
They don't take any risk if they remove your content from their platform.

Distrokid is really good and cool indeed, Im also trying out Soundcloud Premier distribution, also gives 100% back, however Deezer and Beatport are missing there so far.
Michiel lemme know on how smooth soundcloud distribution works! thanks in advance
@@floodyNumb My DJ/Artist name is Mike Redfields, profile: soundcloud.com/mikeredfields
So far I have released all tracks through Soundcloud. And it's easy, they give 100% to the artist and the button is there for every track to instantly monetize and distribute.
Plus I usually upload to Soundcloud anyway first so I can privately share to friends before release. Next to that when you change something or delete a track you can also with a click of a button delete it in distribution.
So far very happy with it, they only need to add Deezer, Beatport and Traxsource to their distribution program 😀
Good thing about Distrokid extra is Lyrics support, locking of tracks and payments can to wire transfer, next to paypal.
I have asked Soundcloud if they will get Beatport and so on and they say they are working on adding it.

whats your experience with distrokid?
