I love the ethic of your channel: it builds community to share our love of this sport. My teens and I will be at Alta/Snowbird for six days this season. We’re psyched, and your videos help us feel better prepared and enjoy the mental preparation. Thanks for your super informative channel.
Aaron and Ariel, Your dad is great for taking you on so many great skiing adventures and you guys are so fortunate for skiing so many great places. Awesome, I love it! And I look forward to many more skiing adventures.
I have been fortunate to have logged in lots of great powder days in at both resorts since I first ski there in 1989. If you are only limited to a vacation your chances are limited. The longer you are in the SLC area the more often you will get powder. Ski midweek and try to avoid holiday weeks and only ski on weekends if there is new snow. You got to start up LCC early on powder days but be aware that the road maybe closed for Avalanche control so you will wait in line. Also be aware that lifts don’t open until Avalanche control is done so you might have to stand in lift line for a while. The more snow the less terrain will be available due to avalanche danger. Don’t get mad until you actually see what Avalanche debris looks like. Like the kids say today “ it’s no joke”! Be aware that once you go through the Avalanche gates at Alta Snowbird it could be a while if you need ski patrol especially in certain areas along the boundary lines. If you really want powder after it’s been skied out in the resort boundary you can go Alpine Touring in the BC. However you need the equipment and skill with Avalanche beacon, shovel, probe and knowledge of safety and navigation. Alta is definitely the area favorite of backcountry skiers. On the drive from Snowbird up,to Alta look up to your left and notice the ski tracks. Those skiers earn their turns by skinning up. If
Very well said, sir. It takes many day to get into a strategy and rhythm to fully enjoy the powder day at these resorts. But once you figure out, it is priceless.
It's nearly impossible for non locals to figure this out and if you're looking for powder as a tourist, the experience can be quite frustrating. I'm gonna try Europe for the next ski vacation. There may be more terrain to explore and less headache competing with many people over limited runs.
Totally understand. This was how we felt about Alta/Snowbird powder day during the first a few visits, But after more days and some research, it is possible to find a strategy that works. For example, in Alta, 2 runs at high traverse and then spend the rest of the morning at keyhole. It involves some work but guarantees 4-5 good runs.
@@hstubc I live in Utah, I've only been to Snowbird maybe 10 times, I still don't have a good sense of the place. Solitude resort is my spot, i know that place very well👌.
I just want to say. I also make videos like you guys. And, I noticed having subtitles is the key to the growth of a Channel. Americans didn’t catch on to this yet. But I believe it will pay off for me in the long run. Have subtitles. I’ve noticed a lot of travel vlog channels I watch have subtitles. Oh and, keep making more videos! Keep going. It seems like your Chanel picked up a nice momentum to have 100 comments every video, soon. You guys Channel and “Alpine and Shine” are very similar. Sub number/comment number wise. I watch both channels often (you and his). Both of you channels need a drone shot. I think it’s a must for a ski Channel. I’m getting one that’s cheap as well. Hope it functions well in a extreme cold weather.
Appreciate the tip! We plan to buy a drone probably this summer/fall for hiking first. Drones are prohibited in ski resort but we may use it when we start to explore backcountry.
I have skied Alta and Snowbird since 1989. I have bought an Alta season pass since 2014 so I been fortunate to have logged it some great powder days in the resort and Backcountry. The Ikon pass has brought more skiers who probably would not have made the drive up LCC and bought a day ticket. However all ski resorts need to make money and more skiers visits generate more income to cover expenses. Powder days were always busy due to the draw of the powder experience. However what we have noticed is that the Icon pass brings in more less experienced vacation skiers. If you are an experienced powder skier you understand that you should never ski or traverse side to side across a powder run and cut it up with crisscross lines. You ski in the fall line and lay down tracks right next to other tracks. The locals call this farming. Often in certain bowls like Ball Room you will drop in off the traverse at the top into a fall line decent only to hit multiple traverse lines made by skiers who cut across because they did not know any better or didn’t have the necessary skills. Then you have the visiting skiers who stop right on a Traverse instead of stepping up to let those behind them go by. Just a few observations from a skier who has been fortunate to be there full time.
Ikon definitely made the resorts busier, by making skiing cheaper and more available. However, on powder days, most of the crowds are locals and season passholders. A week day powder day in January is far busier than a dry day during Christmas/New year. With or without Ikon pass, parking lots will be full on Powder days during mid winter anyways. This is confirmed by a friend working in Snowbird, the amount of Ikon passholders, day tickets visitors are pretty constant throughout the season, season passholder visits spikes during weekend and powder days.
I'm local. Season passes at Alta for 15 years. Let's check your math. If I have Ikon Base (what a large percentage have) I get 5 days at snowbird and then out for the season. The reg Ikon, 7 shared across AltaBird and then again...gone. I (and my kids) will hit 40-50 days per season. Would you rather me race to the same place every single one of the 40-50 days and compete with you for parking and drops or would you prefer I hit the 6 Utah resorts spread out on the Ikon and dump in on all the surrounding states resorts for my days? If you were in the canyons today, a nothing special weekend, you surely must know the answer.
I love Snowbird. I did CIRQUE TRAVERSE today for the 2nd time ever...and wow,, I've progressed a ton since my 1st try in December (very scary at the time). I only Snowboard 🏂 so no Alta for me 😔.

@@TheBlacktulips welcome! Ohh, I did t know drones are prohibited in ski resorts. Ok, good to know!
Both are great
can't argue with this.
The problem with following the terrain openings is there are 1000 other people doing the same. I would rather avoid the crowd and ski the chop.
The choice is easy for me! I'm not even allowed to go to alta because I prefer to go down the mountain sideways.
that is one thing I don’t like about Alta even as a skier
I love ur vids
Where is Alta & Snow bird?
They are in the little cottonwood canyon near salt lake city
That guy is wrong it’s in Idaho just outside of Boise
I wish Snowbird left the Ikon pass. The crowds have ruined a powder paradise.
It wouldn't change much imo. Snowbird is like mecca and skiers will go no matter what pass it's affiliated with or not.
