    I want to attest to Paul’s truth here about asparagus. When we first bought our little, organic farm, we immediately planted asparagus crowns. I did NOT trench then in but merely dug 2 inches in the soil. I spread out the roots and covered them with the garden soil. I dusted the tops with wood ash from our stove. I then covered them with probably 6 inches of woodchips.
    THREE MONTHS LATER, our asparagus was up and as big around as my index finger! When you bite into it, it is the coolest sensation. The spears are so jam-packed with water that when your lips close around the asparagus, when you bite, you can feel a circle of water touching your lips as it shuttles to where you just bit!
    It’s the coolest sensation! Paul knows! 😁🙏🏼❤️

    I've emptied the pots out and pushed the roots out the holes. We may bigger holes huge holes and put them in. It works. But you have to train the roots. And you can do root cutting. Nurseries have been doing root trimming for years - it works, you have to to keep them alive until people can purchase them. He's talking about your backyard.

    Thanks again L2Survive! I love what I learn every time you post a video, but I especially love the BTE's! I knew a girl could buy asparagus seed, but I have literally NEVER EVER heard anyone seriously advise me to actually sow asparagus from seed. (why I needed to hear it instead of just trying it is a mystery). Gonna get me some before the September crash!

    If using wood chips, grass clippings, leaves, etc etc. that have been sprayed with poison does the poison breakdown? There are several tree service companies that give away wood chips and all that but may have been exposed to chemicals for weed killing etc etc. Please advise

    Thatnub, I bought 2 fig trees this spring and I am growing them in 15 gallon containers so I can move them in my garage for the winter. After I heard Paul explain about the root system choking themselves off in containers I want to plant them in the ground. However, even Burntridge Nursery says the winter will kill them if it gets below 20. I heard Paul say that the coldest he had on his property was 4 degrees. So the Q is what does Paul do with his fig trees when it gets down to 4 degrees.

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He has mentioned in videos before, though I cannot remember which one right now (usually by the fig tree near the chicken coop on the tour), that when it gets really cold out his fig trees will die back but, they always come back around in the spring.

      @@L2Survive my grandmother had figs trees in Romania planted by the fence and I remember she cover it with straw and sometimes will die and come back. I ate figs from her garden when I was little.

    I used to do the same and then suddenly i was getting asparagus bugs uhhhhh. What I got when i paid attention was that by pulling it up from the root you are technically pruning and leaving room for more shoots to come up. I used to always just cut the asparagus plants at ground level at the end of the season. I also don't do that anymore because again it leaves all those stems in the ground and makes it much harder for the new ones to come up next season. I noticed that the shoots come up much easier and no more funky weird curved shapes on some shoots due to the least path of resistance coming up.
    I can't believe i never thought of that. It simply is no longer crowded. Duhhhhh i said to myself. I love when the light bulb goes on but just frustrated also when the concept is simple and over looked it. YES the stems will decompose but it takes a while and in the meantime the new shoots have a crowded area to grow through....
    I'll always harvest this way from now on. This year??????? NOOOOO bugs!

    • @camicri4263
      @camicri4263 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome, ever since I am braking them at the crown they don't stop, I get some asparagus almost every day. I need to buy more crowns.
      I don't know how we like to complicate things when is so simple, Paul is right. ...we are disconnected.

    Several tree service companies and the different counties give away green wood chips etc. I have read that this can spread different tree diseases, bore beatles, bugs etc etc...so Before I pick some up what should I know about these as I may get some for my wifes grandmother as well but would feel horrible if their garden and property gets destroyed by an infestation of some sort.

    I would love a fig tree but I am curious I know its not for his climate, but being in wyoming where we get SO COLD would something like that live through the winter?

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Crystal Walker Send Paul a self addressed stamped envelope, box or cash this January and have him send you some cuttings to stick in the ground. The worst thing that happens is nothing.

    Hey there thatnub! I'm addicted to watching all your back to Eden videos. It's really great to learn all the details that didn't get covered in the movie. I'm from Texas, but in August I'm getting married and we are going to Portland for our honeymoon trip. The first full day we will be there(Sunday) we are making the drive to see Paul and go on the tour. I am so excited. I was curious if you still have any extra copies of "growing food gods way", I would love to have a copy but it's pretty hard to find any, as I understand it's no longer being printed. I hope to hear back from you, and I hope all is well with you and your family.

      colton McDonald Congrats on finding someone to put up with you for ever. The wife and I have been together for like 20 years and she hasn't shot me yet. You will have a good time at Paul's but, you are brave to ask your new wife to do it on your honeymoon. The book was sold out quick. Everyone is on a back order but, there are not enough orders to justify a second printing yet. Go to his website for more info on that.

    LOL I watched you and Paul go buy a potted Pear tree at a nursery. I watched that video, then went and bought several potted trees. Now here is a video saying never buy potted trees. Well so far their doing great. Thanks for posting. But why did you and Paul do a video buying potted trees?

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the video you are talking about is this one th-cam.com/video/FCjD4tVBYpM/w-d-xo.html but, these are all bare root trees.

    • @suffolkshepherd
      @suffolkshepherd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that would be the video. And after I watched this one, bought bare root trees, so now I have even a larger orchard with both bare root trees and tress from potted planted, I am sending you the bill for the potted!, LOL. Thanks for posting. These videos have changed my life and land!

    Has Paul ever addressed the 7 year rest issue?

    • @jeffelkins426
      @jeffelkins426 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dads Mimi He did talk about the Shemitah (sabbath year) during this tour.

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dads Mimi I asked him the 7 year question ( th-cam.com/video/aOcdTbjuuDc/w-d-xo.html ) and he basically said that his land is never stressed so, there is no need for it to rest. Look at the forest, does it take a break every 7 years?

    • @MalarkusD
      @MalarkusD 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dads Mimi I wonder if he would need to rest his land if he was unable to bring in loads of woodchips to kickstart / speed up the natural covering process? In nature the land doesn't need "resting" because it is never under the strain of being intensively harvested. Maybe if you couldn't bring in chips from offsite, or had no way of chipping up your branches & leaves, you'd need to let the land lie fallow? Just thinking out loud :)

    • @theversatileartist6446
      @theversatileartist6446 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MalarkusD You are absolutely right, the Torah is a set of instructions for the benefit of all man kind among it is the instruction to give the land to rest on the 7th year, since people in the past had no access to a wood chipper and such abundance of mulch and of course most people during history did not know about the wood chip method their land would get depleted and would need a 7th year rest.
      Good point!

    • @SerJahPhoto
      @SerJahPhoto 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This only applies to the tilling method. Paul doesn't till his garden, so his soil is constantly at "rest".

    Listen to me...listen to me. Everytime someone else speaks, Paul totally ignores them, but expects everybody else to listen to his words of wisdom. Too much arogance for me.

    • @Itsmyzelf
      @Itsmyzelf 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He sure is the radical type, but with his 60+ years of gardening experience and finding out at the end it is supposed to be simple yet abundant.. that's so opposite to what people are used to. It's his way to make people aware about it which can be hard. Such a tour is like a crash course about food, health, nature and most of all.. to make people think critically. What I find is that his heart is in the right place.

    • @camicri4263
      @camicri4263 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think he is arrogant, he answers questions! The reason he is saying listen to me is because everyone is talking, you go to his house, he feels you and wastes his time, I absolutely love this guy. Humble man!
