This method works! I started using wood chips a couple years ago. My soil was so compact. I did not till or turn the soil in any way. I just started with "lasagna" style layers the first year i.e. shredded newspaper, cardboard, kitchen scraps, leaves, what little compost I had made, pine needles, grass clippings, rotted wood from the woods, old straw, aged manure, etc. Anything I could get my hands on. I went by 3rds, 2/3 brown, dead material (carbon), 1/3 green, in alternating layers. Then I laid wood chips down thick on top, at least 6 inches, thinking I wouldn't have to do it the following year. Ha. They break down so fast and turn into the richest soil. I'm in my 3rd year now of adding chips and if I dig my fingers in an inch or two, it's filled with worms. I throw my garden debris, what little there is since there are no weeds, roughly torn up, right on top. They die quickly, break down and go right into/through the woods chips. I also pick up free coffee grounds from Starbucks and sprinkle it liberally over the chips. A good rain washes them through. Occasionally I add kitchen scrap, just whenever I have a lot, not regularly, to feed the worms.. I move the chips to the side, spread the scraps out a bit, then cover back up with a handful of soil and then back thick with the chips. I do this to deter flies and critters. No tilling, no weeding, no work after the first year, no composter! Root veggies are naturally cold weather crops. The heat put off by the composting process naturally extends your growing period. I don't pull any annuals up in the fall. The tops will compost. The roots aerate the soil and I leave them until the following spring and only remove them if they are in the way of new plantings. And no, I don't water. My neighbors just don't get it.
Amazing. How did you plant into it that first year? This is what I"m confused about. Do you dig down to soil or plant into the decomposing chips?
Michael Lohre hello michael, you dig down to the soil and plant the seeds into the soil but only like a quarter deep if that. Once the plant grows tall enough you spread the wood chips back around the base of the plant but make sure you don't cover it entire haha

Also told him how juicy & sweet the vegetables are in your garden & that you can smell the minerals .I wrote your name down for him to watch your videos. Oh, that is really great, really good you did that. Such people need to cooperate to wake people up. Would be so nice to see them toghether. They are both ''information sources'' in gardening and minerals.
I am going to try his method this time. Although I have established raised beds. I put down what compost I had and four inch layer of woodchips I got from a tree service. I am hoping by spring I will have a good start on the process and increase my success in growing food for my family.
How much did the tree service give?
I have had three piles dropped off so far. Although I DO have an acer of land to let it sit. I am also laying out a mini fig / peach orchard area also that I will layer the chips on when I have the strength to move them. It will have 8 fig trees that are about 12 ft apart as well as two peach trees and maybe another fruit tree that is self pollinating. I have 6(16 ft) beds, 4(4x8) beds, 3 large strawberry beds and a large asparagus bed.

Nope, I actually live in central Arkansas. They seem to do very well but I do a little extra winter protection on the figs just in case we get a bad winter.
Please, don't forget the manure. Chicken or horse/cow. It´s in Paul recipe.
Paul, I really enjoy this video. You are funny and you had me laughing, but you are speaking truth. I love your revelation. I am so motivated. I can't wait until spring to start putting a lot of your practices and recommendations to work. It's now November and I have left my carrots and onions in the ground. I live in Colorado so when it gets below 25 degrees with no snow to insulate, I do cover them with a frost blanket. I'm not sure if I have enough insulation in my soil to keep them warm. I am calling around looking for wood chips. Thank you so much for sharing about your relationship with the Good Lord and the revelations you are receiving from him.

Hello, I find this method of planting very interesting.....in agriculture school we were always taught that we had to keep our gardens in a semi clean state. Only things that we used for mulch were straw, or other dried grasses. Unfortunately we turned those things under......disturbing the soil biology. This method (back) to Eden gardening method just turned some of the old ways on their heads..
Elliot Coleman is growing food in Vermont where it's likely the coldest place in the US in greenhouses and outside under cover all winter long without lights or heat. It can be done and its really really cold there.

does the wood chip mulching method work well for all food crops? I have heard from Matt Powers videos that perhaps grasses and other plants that do not naturally grow in woodland environments may not thrive as much in the fungal-dominated compost that results from woodchip mulching?
What's up with the lump on Paul's back? Is it from his "Agent Orange" exposure in 'Nam, like his nerve problems that limit his ability to walk? I hope he is OK.

What happens if you are like me and got a huge area covered with chips but now the company doesn’t wanna to do free ones any more and can’t afford more? I’m really worried about the next few seasons.
Does he give his culture wastes to the chickens? What does he do with the composted result?
If you have a drone, could you get some aerial footage or footage of the whole garden?
If I had an extra $1,000 to $2,000 I would have a drone. I do have 20,000 subscribers though. There is a chance one of them works at a drone company that would like to sponsor a struggling TH-camr. One day I will save up the money to get a drone but, that is going to take a while.

Paul; they don't dare to take things to eat unless you tell them. They are too careful, better tell them from the beginning what they can take and try, and if they can buy some more to bring home.

It's an order thing, a preference of the gardener.
Because he feeds it to his chickens so he also gets eggs and higher nitrogen compost/manure this way, better ROI.

Since Paul has woodchips in the orchard, he does not ever have to water that. Paul uses the compost from his chicken pen in the garden space next to the parking area and in the main garden on the other side of the orchard. While there are some woodchips in those two places, they do not get the full benefits of the woodchips and during the dry parts of the summer, he from time to time has to water a bit. This year he started planting the orchard with more plants and those do not get watered at all.
how would Paul deal with the dense Georgia clay soil?
All of Paul's soil was hard as cement. He still has some that way by the house and in the earlier tours, he showed it off a lot. There are other B2E gardens in the south where clay is an issue. My dogs, they were English Mastiffs weighed around 200 lbs each, were getting unhealthy, allergies, etc., per my vet's advise I tried different foods, nothing worked, I was finally convinced, by a Vegan, to feed them a Vegan (Dogfood), and they became healthier then ever and lived beyond their life expectancy. My last dog I just made her her meals, rice/potatoes/oatmeal, etc she lived a nice long happy life. We have all been raised and trained by corporate-owned billion dollar industries to think that the truth is only what they say, and not what we see
That's just the difference between omnivorous and carnivorous . (Dogs are omnivorous if you didn't know)
what's with Paul's fanny pack?
I'm just a poor child from the city and can't afford the good things like quality wireless microphones yet. I saved up and bought a supper cool Zoom H5 to get better audio from Paul as requested by you all (hope you are liking it). I have the recorder, an extra battery bank and wires in the fanny pack and the mic up his shirt.

he was exposed to "agent Orange" used by the US military during the war. check out the effects on the nervous system
constant heavy exposure to agent orange when he served in vietnam. Most of his buddies with this exposure are long since dead. Paul is still physically strong and able (due to superhealthy diet?), but his neurology has been damaged by the agent orange so his brain connection to instruct the legs to move isn't working properly.
It's easy to look at the surface and see problems and judge, yet Paul clearly teaches the opposite in the garden.... Always remember you never have the full perspective of life.

Not only is this method misguided but is filled false promises and half truths. Mulch works but it's not the be all and end all.
He doesn't use mulch. It is wood chips. It is tree branches that have been put through a chipper shredder and what comes out is green and brown natural material that composts together to make soil. Mulch...like you get from the store does not have the green material...the nitrogen to break down the carbons of the wood...in it. YOU'RE RIGHT MULCH WILL NOT WORK!!!!!!!!! IT MUST BE WOOD CHIPS!!!!!!
