  • the front passenger end makes a quiet bump and ratchet here and there and I noticed that I am able to wiggle the axle shaft extensively. I had the truck on a hoist and the tire has no play at all. This means a good bearing, right? Could this be the inside axle needle bearings? Help me

Great idea for the video - crowd sourcing the answer. Glad it worked out for you and reading the comments helped me be ready for the job - preventative maintenance in my case, but I've got 273,000 miles on the truck and am just about to take it on a long trip.

I ended up replacing axle hub roller bearings, knuckle seals, bearings in the 4x4 locking hub and repacked both wheel bearings through the abs sensor. everything is tight and 4x4 works with automatic locking. just made a 2000 mile ride trouble free.

joe snowmo do you by chance have part numbers?

If your knuckle is loose its more than likely your knuckle seal is shot. they are abour $35 each at oreilys. After I stalled the knuckle seals it was pretty tight. Then I replaced the needle bearings in the axle hub and locking hub and it was really tight. I highly recommend taking out the axle shafts, I just pryed them out with a crowbar and replace the inner axle seals as well. this task is easier than you think. make sure to have bought or made your own seal driver, youl need it

Same issue on my truck. So the only thing needing replacement is the bearing and the seal right? An7y other recomendations while I'm at it?

Your vacuum seal fails , leading losing needle bearing, chew up shaft, locking hub, not hard to repair.

You say its not in the hub but it obviously is because the outer is moving and well as the inner part of the shaft assembly.

Yes, the knuckle seal definitely, inner axle seal. O rings, roller bearings in the hub assembly and in the locking 4x4 black hub. I forgot part numbers and it took me a hot minute to get exactly what I needed. Dont forget to make or buy the knuckle seal driver. If you want one I made one from pipe. Email me for it @ 25 it's yours paypal only. Wittock2007@Hotmail.co

My truck does the same. I thought it was the universal joints. Replaced the driver side and test drove it a mile. Started clunking and grinding again for 2-5 seconds every once in awhile. Sounds as if my locking hubs locks up or something? It's freaking annoying and I can't seem to pinpoint the problem.

Ernesto Watchman it’s the axle shaft seal, I had the same problem

See my channel for the fix. There's two roller bearings in the hub. Replace those and remove the abs sensor ion the bearing hub itself and squeeze more grease in the main bearing. Also replace the knuckle outer seal and inner seal. It will be super tight again and your automatic 4x4 will engage and disengage perfect

I don't see any "fix" on your channel?? Did you make a video on it or what?.... I know what it is, but I just wanna see how bad your needle bearing looked... Mine doesn't seem to have as much play as yours.

Y’all are wasting your time replacing the seals and needle bearings. Just replace the whole axle shaft then you don’t have to pinpoint the issue and you’ll save money in the long run

Thing is the axle shaft is good, reason its loose is either bad seals or bad hub/needle bearing…while at it i did the U Joints. Only reason to replace the outer axle(the one that connects to the hub) is it the needle bearing damaged the shaft.
