There is a very big difference between a dishwasher and having a mum who owns a cleaning mangement company. Choosing to understand the business nature and expansion is worth giving up degree for.

I think the poor perception of dishwashers are not the same for every country. It is common to find young people working in the same jobs in Turkey and people do not share the same low perception of this job. A job is a job. Parents got to stop teaching their kids to judge different occupations based on the pay. It's a stereotype that needs to be unlearned.
Precisely. I saw young people working such jobs in japan too at airports etc. It's a honest job. some japanese people work as cleaners and they are proud of their job, unlike in sg, where people tend to look down on cleaners and jobs they deemed as low class.

I think the most respectable part is that he chose to focus on the family business, understand it from the ground up, and kept his head down when people made snide remarks instead of flexing his actual position on them. He could easily have said so to 'keep face' and perpetuate the stigma against such humble yet important jobs, but I think it wise that he did not do so. Kudos to that.
I actually would have wanted to be a dishwasher… it’s my favorite chore and I don’t even care if my skin gets so dry.

He seriously reminded me of my ex colleague. I used to work at a restaurant while waiting for Os result and the dishwasher was a 24 years old dude and i have gotta say after working at the back end of the kitchen, he was seriously one of my favourite. I felt so safe because i know there will always be him to help ensure the plates are clean and replenished in time and he was such a nice guy. I truly knew the importance of them and how the entire kitchen system would collapse without him without a dishwasher

Such valuable life lessons humility and rooted in values for the children and young ones out there! Unfortunately they grow up with lots of stereotype in their minds and their parents should be the ones to receive such education of the world. I totally feel what he went through... As a broke masters student in the US, I worked in the school canteen, also have to clean dishes, granted got machine to clean, but I need to throw the stuff thats on the plates first, and take out the trash. It's so tiring, heavy, and smells bad. All this just for $9.50 an hour, because it was the only "legal" thing I can do (of course being a TA is better but the hours isn't enough).

Shoutout to all dishwashers in the world, i worked in a hospitality industry and i must say the dishwashers folks are the backbone of it. Without them there’ll be no smooth operation
Much respect for the guy. In fact I have lots more respect for people who do all these menial jobs for society, probably more so than investment bankers who are just shifting money from A->B->C->A while making a big commission in the process.
Its a win for him, he gets to work with his mum and be with her a lot! I couldn't see my self in an office job slavering away 50+ hours to hit a target, I work as a bus driver and that gives me time with my love :)

I used to wash dishes in my cousin's stall for quite a number of years during my studies.
And I still instinctively do it whenever I'm back at the stall in my kampung.
I have been working for Nordstrom habitant as their dishwasher for almost three years now and I enjoy it however it does get at times hard but you get respected by the others as long as you stay on task which I have been 😊

An honest days work . In Switzerland, Restaurant dishwashers are paid $5500 Swiss Francs.
It’s a societal issue on how we view them.
I would move to Singapore from Mexico to do this, and obviously study to get a degree
