In his second Masterclass, Sven-Göran Eriksson revisits his Italian double-winning Lazio team.
After being appointed manager in 1997, Eriksson won numerous trophies with the 2000 Serie A champions. His four-year spell in Rome also involved them winning the Coppa Italia and European Cup Winners' Cup.
Eriksson discusses that most decorated of squads, the roles of each player, and their duties within the team.

Lovely to see Sven speak with such fondness about his former players.
easy to do that when you have all time greats as your players
Late 90s and early 00s every saturday morning watching Gazzetta Football Italia (after Trans World Sport) those teams and players will always stay with me. Ronaldo at Inter with Recoba scoring those ridiculous goals. Zidane and Del Piero at Juve, if you scored a tap in at school it was always called an 'Inzaghi'. Batistuta and Rui Costa at Fiorentina. Watching Roma win the title and their fans running on the pitch and stripping Totti down to his pants. I remember it all so well but my favourite player to this day is still Nedved.
REVENONE good ol days
how dare you forgot to mention the Bermuda Triangle in Parma! Buffon, Cannavaro, Thuram.... good old days
@@iamjeff818 Didn't mention Milan either, they had some pretty handy players too.
@@revenone1077 Sheva, Serginho, Maldini and Gattuso. The foundations of Ancelotti's unstoppable Milan.
Football is dead now sadly
Veron is so underrated. He was Pirlo before Pirlo. But many people still remember only his (relative) failure at ManUnited. Ferguson was so correct when he defended him.
In italy he had more time on the ball yet at united he didnt have that luxury
He was underrated but never Pirlo.
@@la-do-ra-ch6810 He was equally good.

As a Lazio fan It was such a pleasure to listen to Eriksson's explanation about the best team in our history.
Sven, we Lazio fans will always love you !!!
come tifoso del chelsea, lazio la mia squadra italiana preferita e adoro tutto cio che riguarda il club i suoi fan di storia e leggende
when he talks about Mihalovic i get goosbumps ! that man had a left foot that was magic Freekicks Corners long passes just Unbelievable
Mihajlovic had the best long pass of any center back ever and crazy free kick taker (today he would be worth god knows how much). When someone scores a hat trick just from free kicks they can say they are close to him. But of course Nesta was the best defender on that team.
Pep guardiola would sign him instead of laporte..
Second best free kick taker ever after Juninho
I remember when klaus topmoller (if im not mistake) make a request to uefa if he allowed to use 2 goalkeeper in a match so mihajlovic cannot score on the free kick situation lol
@@ivanwidjaya7371 haha never heard genius...
@@shruk4 if i'm objective both could score from anywhere. But the keepers in serie a when Mihajlovic played and keepers in ligue 1 are 2 different classes,
That Lazio team was ludicrously good
What a legendary team that lazio squad ...unbelievable
the entire serie a was world class during the 90s... half of the teams were so stacked with top stars back then
They will win it with Inzaghi this year (if the season resumes)
Poor in Europe.
@@thunderparadise.704 do you think lazio underachieved
you can tell he's proud of them all
and notice how many of these players became coaches
he's definitely the greatest Swedish coach ever
"Greatest Swedish coach ever" doesn't really say that much since there barely have been any in international football. Lagerback is the only other Swedish coach I can think of from the top of my head.
qwrtyz Yeah, it’s basically only Eriksson and Liedholm who managed to coach some big teams
As if he is talking about his grandchildren, he obviously loved all of them.
Mihajlovic's accuracy and consistency was incredible. Effortless 50m pinpoint long balls from the back or corners that were more like a shot at goal
Lazio were unbelievable on champ man 00/01 and 01/02. Salas and crespo !
Best team I ever saw in Italy
1. Lazio 2000
2. Milan 1994
3. Inter 2010
Lmao at Lazio 2000 ahead of Milan 94 or Juve 95-99. Absolutely hilarious. Let alone Milan 2005- 2008 or Inter 2007- 2010. Lazio won ONE title and did nothing in Europe then fell away.
Juventus 1998
That was one of the best team eva! temember the uefa final!
Marchegiani must be crying watching this, Sven completely forgot him!
vinnyvasquez i thought the same. Hehe, poor lad
Peruzzi?
@@alone2break peruzzi went to lazio a year later. Marchegiani was the scudetto winning goalkeeper
Well, Marchegiani forgets he was a Lazio player and that he won a scudetto here (he's a journalist now and he never has good words for Lazio). So I don't think he's crying
Danielazio Why is it so? 😯
In that year i begin to watch Seria A, so i like Lazio, good play, interesting characters of players and jersey, they are so beatifull, one of the best in history i think.

What a team! That shows how good Serie A was between 1980-2005.
oscar silva 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤡🤡.
oscar silva Please, stop talking about Lazio and about players like Nesta, Crespo, Laudrup, Verón, Stam, Nedved, Vieri, Klose, ect.
- Sinisa ... Mihajlovic... you’re not a winger, you’re defender.
- No, No, I am a winger, or a second striker 😂😂😂
His accent is fun to listen to.
Fascinating... how did I only just discover this channel?
Very lovely to see Sven speak like that about his former players ♥️♥️
He missed stankovic, conceisao, couto, marchegiani, and vieri
Vieri just played in the season 98-99
Marchegiani Just played in the season 2001-2002
45 Rajamad stankovic was always in the stands
@@filippocecchetti4241 But he was excellent later for Inter...
And Inzaghi
Nesta and Nedved are world class players
Agreed. I think what set Nedved apart was the fact he was just so consistent. 9/10 in every game!!!
Roberto Mancini also
Nedved. Oh man. What a player.
The real playmaker of them all Roberto Mancini...
Amazing team. Good memories . Forza Lazio
This was possibly the team I feared the most as a pre-teen. I'm a Chelsea fan, and I remember worrying we'd get battered by them if we reached the Cup Winners Cup final in 1999 (we didn't). Then we got them in the Champions League the following year & did pretty well home & away, even got a draw in Italy, but that quality Sven talked about here was evident. Mihajlovic scored one of the best free kicks I've ever seen in the home match, from nearer to the corner than the centre just rifled it into top bins.
Even back then, with how young & relatively ignorant I was, I could see that team was a collection of winners. They might not have been the best team technically, which says a lot about Serie A in those days, but they were the most savvy & committed. Kinda like what Mourinho's Chelsea would wind up being in the PL years down the line.
Italian football was fantastic at that time. So many great teams and players . Nedved was one of my favourite players of all time.
They were class on late 90's manager games ha.
This channel is a pretty different and that's what makes it an excellent one. It's such pleasure to watch coaches unfolding their tactics and praising their players
How come he didnt mention goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani and Right Midfielder Sergio Conceicao? 🤔
Dejan Stankovic and Simone Inzaghi too
This is pure masterclass. Only Sven could make Lazio scudetto.
They were all winners, man, i miss that about players these days
Fascinating 👍👍
Who was the keeper Sven? Those outfield players were world class - a special time of Italian football .
Luca Marchegiani, who was also N.12 for Italy at 1994 World Cup
what a team !
Super Cup vs United struggling to think of two teams at their peak with such depth of quality.
Marchegiani,Conceicao,Stankovic,Boksic,S.Inzagi,Ravanelli,Lombardo...they play a lot,not a single word.
legendary team with legendary players.
Lazio and Inter have always been my favorite teams after Real Madrid.

Sérgio Conceição was the regular right-side midfielder
Great coach, but he forgot Cristian Vieri, Dejan Stankovic and Sergio Conceicao: they all won the Cup Winner Cup in 1999
Vieri's stint at Lazio was very short, so as Conceisao. Stankovic will have started shining after his resign
And all this without considering other big players (at least 3) he not mentioned in that lazio: Dejan Stankovic, Christian Vieri, Sergio Conceiçao.
Stankovic and Conceicao?
Yeah: I don't get why for the midfield he chosen Sensini, who was at the end of his career, and Almeyda: definitively a defender...
kleb441 yup Sensini was great in Parma not Lazio. Almeyda and Simeone were more outstanding as DMF. What I don’t understand why he didnt mention Stankovic and Conceicao who were massive as attacking midf beside Nedved.
This makes me want to play Championship Manager 01/02 and play as Lazio
We need more tactics... How to attack hw to defending n transition negative-positive... We wish got them
and what about the gk?
Sinsa was great. Even in swos 98. What a shot
Veron Almeyda Simeone Stankovic Nedved Conceisao what a midfield!!!
Waow,.Mancini and sinisa are the key guys in the system
He also had Dejan Stankovic, Sergio Conceicao, Alan Boksic, Simone Inzaghi, Fernando Couto and Atillo Lombardo
Veron, Almeyda, Simeone..what a fucking midfield
What about Stankovic?
I begin to watch lazio and growing as a fan looking up to allen boksic, cristian vieri, simone inzaghi.. i wonder why he didnt mention about karel poborsky or dejan stankovic..

Best lazio squad ever.
Not really tactics just him going through his team player by player
yeah which was Svens (lack of) tactics
Stunning team but let me tell ya Allen Boksic was a beast one of the most underrated football players at Lazio and Juve. Remember him coming on as sub vs Chelski in champs league at bridge and le-B and Desailly just could not handle him

That Lazio was made of great players.
GK ??
Istället svengelska by Sven :D
I really think with a better Coach Lazio could win much more in those years
Eriksson might not have been a tactical mastermind but he was very good for managing big egos and being well-liked by most players. For example, in the same season (99/00) Inter also had a star-studded squad, but manager Marcello Lippi (one of the best ever) started fighting with Baggio and Panucci and the atmosphere inside the team was ruined.
@@giannb5145 it was Seria A, hard for everyone. Eriksson, before arriving at Lazio, he just wanted to have his Sampdoria players. He insisted to buy Jugovic (great player) to replace Nedved, he didn't like Signori, who was one of the best forward, and we went to the Final Uefa cup without players, he didn't like Negro, great defender. After the Scudetto he signed for England, really dodgy
@@Diogene1936 do you think lazio didnt fullfill their potential
@@keyuantejohnson6266 yes, definitely. He chooses to get rid of some players like Signori or Di Matteo which would help Lazio to much more than 1 Scudetto...
@@Diogene1936 do you think lazio were the chelsea or man city of their time
Right wing and striker?
This Lazio side had Conceicao, Stankovic and Lombardo at various times playing on right wing. Strikers were all excellent: Salas, Boksic, Mancini and Simone inzaghi (from January 2000 also Ravanelli)
I guess he didn’t like Marchegiani and Sergio Conceicao since he didn’t mention them 😅
Looking back the entire squad was made of star players. Actually the entire Serie A was full of stars. But Veron was the best.
He looks like a Matrix agent. I think he's after Messi...... *The one*

I am surprised that Lazio had this great and strong team in the late nineties ... I am a Liverpool fan but here in the middle East it was all about British football and German football back then
