In our latest masterclass, Sven-Göran Eriksson revisit the tactics that inspired England's memorable 5-1 victory away to Germany.
England needed three points in Munich in their pursuit of qualification for the 2002 World Cup.
After conceding the opening goal, they succeeded in securing one of their finest ever results on an evening that was as encouraging for supporters of England as it was for those of Liverpool; Michael Owen's hat-trick and further goals from Steven Gerrard and Emile Heskey devastated the hosts.

Sven's masterclass -- "Football is very simple, I just ask 'who are the most famous and popular players from the biggest clubs in England'.... It was my job to find them and put them in a 4-4-2" - Job Done.
Fair play to him tho, 4-4-2 was the 4-5-1 of today. Looking at his formation, I just wondered how he managed without a dedicated 4.

Just because his English isn't the best don't underestimate him as a coach. What we see in TV interviews shows 1% of the actual person and his skills as a coach.
His tactics were very basic and simplistic by today's standards, stuck to 442, but it got the work done. His strength as a coach was always to recruit and combine players who work in harmony with each other, covering each others weaknesses and lifting each others strength. Encouraging players to specialize themselves to only do what they are individually good at instead of trying to be equally good at everything.
Sven is a gentleman, that cannot be denied, and that is a big reason why he has been such a successful manager.

The pressure was so big to the three lion.
People think England would be defeated again.
But, several days before, Liverpool (European League winner) won against Bayern Munich (champion League winner) at european super cup.
England played so similar like how Liverpool defeate Munich.
Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, and Emile heskey are the star on both match!
Fantastic as always, these are my favourite videos on youtube.
Remember that game so well. England were always constantly looking to get Owen into space and areas that he could shoot, because you just knew that the chances were so high. He was fatal.

Fair play for admitting luck played a big part. It’s probably easy to be in this scenario and milk the “tactics” that were implemented.

Agreed. Football is a simple game really. Erikson is a testimony of this - he is a calm friendly man, his role was man management. The players train all day all life from young age. They don't need tactical schemes and over the top planning. They just need clear vision, guidance and tranquility

@@sneezylasagne8534 I'm an England fan and I agree. We had great midfielders so we should have played 4-3-3 in every game. But he played 4-4-2 to get the most out of Owen and Beckham. Owen needed to have a partner and would have been isolated in 4-3-3 and Beckham played best on the right in a 4-4-2.
There was always a debate in England, "how do we get the best out of Gerrard and Lampard?" The answer was simple! play someone behind them, like Hargreaves, Carrick, or Scholes. Instead we had to see Fabio Capello trying ro play Gerrard in LM in a 4-4-2

Simple football works best. As Sven shows here, 4-4-2 keep the shape, build through the wings.
Step 1 - Have a really good young team

People mock Heskey nowadays, but at that time he was a quality striker, very hard to handle with his phisicality, also has very good pace. He was a starter for england for a few years, kids nowadays don't even know that.
Germany had only lost one World Cup qualifying game at home prior to this.

Boi Boi the football England played was so so so boring and mediocre. The team never looked like scoring- I guess people expected more and a team which didn’t let matches go to penalties.
Because he played Paul Scholes out of position on the left, kept with a rigid 4-4-2 and didn't have the common sense to play Hargreaves as a DM, dropping either Lampard or Gerrard. His strategy was to shove as many big-name players as possible into a conventional formation and hope for the best, thereby removing the need to make any hard decisions. He's a massive grifter.
@@Retrostar619 He played Scholes as CM in 2002 (played at this position during Hoddle and Keegan tenure also) and underachieved, useless in QF vs Brazil. Gerrard and Lampard were overrated and didnt care about England. Worse generation and players compare to Hoddle, Barnes, Waddle, Gascoigne, Platt etc.

Suddenly you English clowns think you know better than a manager who has been there and done that with teams and players far better than what England had to offer. England's failures had nothing to do with Sven, they were simply not good enough. They weren't better than Portugal, or Germany, or Italy, or France, or Holland, let alone the two South American big boys. Anyone who knows anything about football knows that playing one player slightly out of position is not fatal to your plans, and the quality of the player comes out at the end of the day. If you England truly failed because Scholes was left-mid, then they were never that good to begin with.

This kind of game killed England. 4-4-2 is basic. Every pro coach and player know very well about strength and weakness of 4-4-2. After having a win like this, England squad and coach believed that they gonna win World Cup with 4-4-2. Not gonna happen in 21 century. Even when you have scholes, beckham, lampard, Gerrard, Rooney.
