Heskey set up Owens first goal, and look how soon he starts his run to be in the right place to score.
His strike partnership with Owen was lethal for Liverpool back in the day

i'm from argentina and although i was very young at the time of this match, i've always been a huge huge fan of the Premier League and English national team from 2000 to 2010 or so and to be honest, i feel kind of sad that these playerse couldn't win anything given the HUGE talent they had. Football was truly unfair with them
How England didn't win something with that team still puzzles me to this day.

Ronaldinho’s trick goal on a free kick in WC2002 was what got them. They just lost their morale after that.
There is no puzzle, my friend. It's all down to the negative football by Eriksson where often the most forward pass was sideways. Even a Brazilian pundit said something like, _England need to let go of the reigns_ . I remember us playing against a 10-man Brazil yet watching the game it looked more like the other way round.

@@jamesfrance57 Even with those tactics though - that midfield. Beckham, scholes, Gerrard - what would they be worth today? Not sure they ever really gelled together, or hit full fitness at the same time or maybe it was tactics, but on paper you put that team up in todays world 11 and there would be more England players in it than today that's for sure.

That Steven Gerrard goal is my favorite goal of all time. Always tried to replicate it growing up, very difficult.

The best goal for me was the first from Owen. (Although Gerard's was not bad al all) The free-kick from Beckham (the best player that day), the way Gerrard turned and looped it out high dropping it in the middle right to Gary Neville who stood and placed a beautiful soft header into the centre. The header down from Barmby to Owen who finished it off with his typical hard, low and swerving shot. It was like it been studied. A piece of art..I could watch that goal again and again.
And to think that the next game was almost a disaster if England had not been given that late dubious free-kick in the 93rd minute. I don't know anyother European "top" team who is so inconsistent as England. At least you can rely on Scotland if you know what I mean.

This is the England performance that I wished had played in the World Cup & Euro semifinals, no fear, no respect for the opposition, played with the passion of the 3 Lions, and the fans, the fans were having a party, AWAY to Germany, oh such happy memories, my only regret was that I wasn't there to have witnessed it live.

Was 8 when I watched this with my loving Dad. One of my best football matches to watch in my childhood. Wasn't yet accustomed to seeing matches with a team scoring 5 so I was mind blown 😂.

Prior to this game Michael Ballack was asking the German press who this Steven Gerrard was, "never heard of him." Obviously it was a bit of trolling but in a game where England hammered them, in Germany, Gerrard scores a screamer and Ballack gets substituted - I think he knew who Gerrard was during and after this game lol.

Not surprising when you looked at the standard of opposition they played. The easiest route to a Wold Cup Final ever.
In fairness we put up more fight against the Brazilians than they did. Probably our best chance to win the WC since 66.

They got called the golden generation but to be honest this was one of the few times when everything just clicked perfectly. Real sense of what might have been with a little bit of luck at the right time.

With this thrashing its just amazing how Germany always bounces back and has won 4 world cups while England has only won 1 world cup. The Germans just know how to make it happen when it really counts.

@@mybitmix this isn't true btw. We had to go into the playoff against Ukraine to qualify because of Beckam's late strike against Greece. In the actual tournament we placed better, mostly due the luck of the draw, but this was still an important game.

I was living in and going to uni in Amsterdam at the time - and being from Canada - didnt know much about football.... yet. I remember asking an English classmate of mine if this win was a big deal. LOL. RIP Sven, you were a real gentleman.
I missed that game - on a flight to Cyrus for our holidays at the time. I was overjoyed when I heard the score. Ten days later, the world as we know it changed forever...😢
