Designing A Pockets-Only Everyday Carry (EDC) Kit

- This is a fun one! (Contents below) I spent a great amount of time considering what the best items to carry everyday (EDC) in my pockets should be. In this video I go through the decision making process, technical requirements and day to day use-cases that shape what I consider to be my ultimate every day pocket carry kit.
Part 2: • Taking Pocket Carry Fa...
While designing this system I concluded there would be two kinds of use-case for the things I would carry in my pockets, and defining them made it much easier to work out exactly what should go into the kit. The two main purposes to keep things in your pockets are for convenience and to deal with unexpected situations.
You can then create a set of tools to accommodate those situations. For me, this meant preparing for things like first aid situations, tick bites, things breaking, power cuts and general repairs. That is the 'unexpected' use-case. For the 'convenience' use-case we want to create a really good collection of tools and systems that save time and avoid friction for potentially annoying day to day tasks. Things like changing batteries in toys, opening locked doors with an elegant key management system and having a torch handy for situations where you forget to get one before you go somewhere where there is no light! And of course a really nice light-weight one-handed opening pen knife/pocket knife.
Essentially I concluded I need a multitool (which I ended up using a bladeless Leatherman Rebar to work around UK knife laws), a separate UK legal pocket knife, zip ties, plasters/band-aids, alcohol wipes, a space pen, a mini sharpie, a tiny periscope-style Olight torch (Perun Mini), and some carefully chosen pouches and wallet to minimise the impact of the bulk and weight on the pocket carry. These are from ARC Company and are really excellent items. There are quite a few design choices that go into this system/kit and I hope some of them are useful if you're building your own pocket carry kit!
I can say it is super-fun having a really well considered pocket carry kit and I've found it incredibly useful on several occasions already.

Hi, I don't know if anyone else's mentioned this but may I suggest that you get the SOG PowerPint PP1001. Cracking little multitool and since you're obviously handy you can make it UK legall with just a small modification. There's a video here on youtuve on how to do that. Anyway it's much more pocketable and it's coming at about 60 gr lighter than the leatherman rebar if I recall correctly.
What a refreshing video. Thank you for making the term EDC something other than showing how much useless stuff can fit in a pouch. You really took time to explain why it works and is practical. Kudos to you.
I appreciate your EDC setup more than most I've seen because its easy to tell you genuinely use it. You spent money where it mattered, and created solutions where a personal touch was needed. That's my style as well and its awesome to see that in others. Good stuff.

Stick a sewing kit in there, never know when something busts open when you are out and about, safety pins will hold it together until you get a chance to repair it properly

Sewing kit, safety pins actually, and duct tape by the way, fab for sealing up a busted backpack and all your stuff falling out, not an entire roll of duct tape, that too bulky for a pocket only EDC system; just wrap like a metre or two around a flash light, It's handy

The main issue I have with most EDC channels is that they never seem to have used any of the items for very long. I think you should have had something in your pocket for at least 6 months before it can be classed as EDC!
Totally! This kit is still in use in my pockets right now. I have made two very intersting changes which I will be doing a video on soon (additions not swapping).

Most EDC channels exist solely to sell you crap. Consequently, they need new crap to create new content to keep selling you more crap.
If you're cranking out content, after awhile you start having to talk about items you've only had for a week. That's the problem with youtube, people often feel forced to crank out Content despite not really having the material they need to crank it out.

My most important EDC tool is nail clippers. Might sound crazy but I’m dead serious.
I do all kinds of works, including IT, handyman, outdoor, etc. I use this tool nearly everyday, sometimes multiple times.
You get a cutting surface that can cut and clip through and incredible amount of materials and situations.
If you have a nicer one it will have a pick on the back of it which can be used to pry, puncture, and file.
It’s basically a micro tool that is legal to carry anywhere in any situation.
You will often be stopped for knives or multi tools, depending on where you are, but nobody knows (or cares that) you’re carrying one as it doesn’t print and can be put in any pocket (my preference being the nearly useless coin pocket on most pants).
Loose threads, opening boxes, clipping any hangnail or broken nail (or toenail), prying out broken RJ45 ends, cutting zip ties, string or twine, filling burrs or edges, clipping stray hairs, opening difficult cans, prying device backs or compartments open, and the list goes on. They are literally dirt cheap and can be had in bulk easily if you tend to misplace them or stash them everywhere. My only wish is that I could get one side of the flip pick / file to come sharpened (because then it’s a conceal carry mini pocket knife).

The classic Victorinox mini plays a very similar role for me, but with a small screwdriver, tweezers and toothpick included
Very well presented. I especially liked the focus on convenience and pocket carry. I also liked that you shared your thought process for inclusion and use. I agree with others who have noticed some channels seem to have a short attention span for the tools they carry. I’d rather have a well thought out kit I carry for years. I always said that any technologies whether physical or digital are just "layers of abstraction between you and what you want to do", so I second your point about using the things you use as a "reflex" kinda thing! While your setup is not exactly my cup of tea in some ways, I appreciate the thought process you've put in and respect the kit in many more ways. I especially like the flashlight and knife choices. (man, UK knife laws are outlandishly silly though)

Workflow - this was kind of exactly (kind of...exactly....hmmm) what I was looking for. Everybody has gear reviews, you can find them all day long. Very few people (you are the first I have found) that really go through and show how you organize and accomplish your EDC.
I apply this principle to all kinds of other things on this channel too :)

this video is so good i watched it again today. I think there are only a few upgrades I would consider, the ever-ratchet clip instead of a carabiner, and maybe a coiled lanyard, so you have somewhat more reach.

A vero fulcrum mini is a nice thing to have. They are quite pricey for what they are but they’re made of titanium, have space for two screwdriver bits and a flathead on the end.

My wife thinks we’re twins, not in appearance, but in philosophy. I carry many of the same things. I find the Victorinox Huntsman to work well for me. I also have a separate set of things in my jacket for when I leave the house. Great video, I look forward to seeing more.

I have the Swiss Champ and Swiss Handyman, Swiss Champ is the only model you will ever need; it has almost everything in it, there are models with torch and USB Stick even, Swiss Knives are truly fab gear, Leatherman is better, but you cannot carry that around other than when out camping if in UK, because it has locking blades, Swiss Champ doesn't

I know you're *supposed* to use a tick remover. But if you've been outside where ticks are on any particular day, it is best to do a tick check once you've gone inside--or, just regularly if you think of it. If it's only been a few hours, chances are that whatever tick has attached itself to you isn't going to be embedded so deeply that you can't grasp it firmly at the base and tug it out slowly with your fingers. I don't get ticks often, but I've never used a tick remover before. I can see their value in ticks that are embedded--but I've never felt the need to make them a part of my EDC. I do think the alcohol wipes are a good idea, though, especially if you're worried about Lyme disease.

Just come across this vid from a different one on your channel, and I think the main take away from this is that every person is different and has different requirements. On a day to day basis I don't need any of this stuff that you carry around with you all the time; to be weighed down in this way, to me, seems crazy. If I can get away with it I have nothing in my pockets - I even leave my phone behind (that's what the Watch is for!).
Having said that: The moment I step outside, my need for all of these items increases. And that's where having a light sling with all of this jazz in, right by the door, makes the most sense to me. Especially as I like to carry a small Fuji camera with me (Phones are fine; cameras are better) then a bag makes a lot more sense.
I'll be checking out a few of these items (especially that sweet light) as they'll be excellent in my bag. Nice vid!
Phone, knife, wallet, keys. That's all I carry. I tried carrying a bunch of stuff i might need. But i found i never used any of it. And i like not having alot of stuff in my pockets. I have a ton of EDC stuff, its just scattered around the house.
Yeah, same. Plus my PPK/S. I guess we're minimalist. I do have a small flash light.

Love your advice. I’ve picked up some of the items you suggested and find they work really well. I’m curious what thumb screw you used on the Luna as I can’t seem to find one that works and fits well.
Mate has the keys on the cord type set up but used bungee cord. Can still be used in a pinch and has flex when keys are hooked on trousers or bag

I carry a lot in my cargo pants a pouch full of tidbits and bandaids and a multi compartment pill container and a small maxpedition coin pouch that has repurposed pill tubes full of medications.

Great video as always. I'm also in the UK and I didn't know about the locking blade thing. I thought you just couldn't have a blade longer than 3 inches. I have a Leatherman Wave (with a locking blade), which I carry on my belt in its pouch and I have a pen in the side pocket. I used to have a Spacepen, but I didn't have the clip and lost it :-(. I have always used my phone as a torch, but that handfree clip-on option looks a great idea. Also having plasters and alcohol wipes with you all the time is a good idea (I also have kids). I have my phone in my front pocket, because I hate taking things out every time I sit down.

The ARC Company wallet looks very well thought out. I have been very happy with 511 Stryke pants to help organize my edc. The pockets have a reinforced flat for pocket clips on knifes, flashlights, etc. They also have cargo pockets that do not bellow out so they are not as noticeable as normal cargo pants plus the pockets have dividers to help keep things in place. They also have two small slash pockets in front that are handy for pens, credit card wallets. keys, etc. The big deciding factor for me is a hidden expanding waistband that helps with mobility. The fabric is light but durable and well worth a look. I have been carrying a Bic lighter with a 6 inch loop of paracord secured with a couple feet of gorilla tape wrapped around it. The loop makes pocket retrieval easier and the tape and paracord are good fire starters in an emergency. Plus tape always comes in handy. Stay safe!
Those pants (we call them trousers heh) look very cool. I'm trying to decide if tactical trousers would be a bit of a step to far for me but I can certainly see the appeal. The pocket layout does look really good. Great ideas with the tape and lighter etc. Thanks for commenting!
@Ben Vallack I'd put another vote forward for 5.11 trousers. I was looking for a pair of walking trousers with a long leg (I'm 6'5) and the 5.11 brand was suggested. I'd never heard of them before. I got a pair of ABR trousers for walking and general work around the house etc. Within 2 weeks I'd ordered a pair of their defender flex slim trousers for work. They are a jean style and cut but not denim (they also do a jean which I believe is the same cut). The big reason I got them for work is they look like normal trousers but have two extra pockets on the yoke of the trousers where I've taken to keeping my phone. The pocket is slightly higher and further round the side than the back pockets and the opening is slightly hidden as it runs across one of the seams. They are virtually invisible with nothing in the pocket. I can also sit down without sitting on anything in these pockets due to their position. They're super useful and I dont look "tactical" while out and about at work or in town. PS thanks for the tips on EDC, has really helped me organise my personal system.

Got to say though, I don't carry my gear in the house, as soon as I'm in the door its strides off and shorts on, I have bits and bobs dotted about the house to make my life easier. I have 2 separate 'normal' wallets that I pack with a lot of my smaller stuff, I'm maybe wrong but I think wallets look less 'odd' and don't draw as much attention although as my pockets are pretty full, I'm maybe deluding myself.
Smart ideas here. I’ve looked a few times into making a custom pocket carrier for my right pocket to hold car key air pods a small flashlight and a pen. Possibly a lighter. But it’s very rare I need one and I always know where the bbq lighter is in the kitchen when I need one around the house. The car key is a big one. Three times a week I need something out of my trunk or glovebox and had forgot to grab the key off the hook. So frustrating! I do like the idea of adding the golf bag sharpie. Having a permanent marker is very handy for very little weight/ size penalty.

This is a very practical and well thought-through EDC.
I like your system! Don’t think your “crazy” at all. I have my EDC and of course it is a little bit different than yours, but you have a very nice EDC.
I also share your thinking. I tend to gravitate to the convenience side. To me the unsolved problem is to do an easy carry given the total weight of the items, their bulkiness, real life every day utility and having very easy access to a specific item at any time (also a must-have requirement in my book). I have found that it is easier and convenient for me to carry very small and above all very lightweight utilitarian items at all times. Some items go in a small multi-compartments leather pocket wallet for IDs/cards (mini pencil, mini paper pad, mini bars), others items go in a Countycomm titanium bead chain in my neck (olight microlight i3E EOS, Wazoo Survival micro ceramic blade, DGQ smallest titanium micro flood light, Splinter Sander micro knife), others items go with my keys in a key holder that attaches to my belt loop (plastic fox 40 whistle, Quiet Carry bandit micro knife, Countycomm micro prybar, Olight i1R EOS microlight, a titanium toothpick holder, a minimalist titanium bottle opener/flat screwdriver), others items go in a wazoo survival cache belt with its integrated compartments (Quiet Carry titanium-scales IQ knife, Victorinox nail clipper, Countycomm screwdriver, Vital Carry titanium pointed punch) and pens in the shirt front pocket (Fura titanium tactical pen in black ink and Countycomm titanium Embassy pen in a blue ink Fisher Space refill. Both double as defense tools). This arrangement which has taken me many years to figure it out works very well as EDC. Even though titanium items are expensive, I prefer same because of their lightness and the resistance to corrosion when compared to stainless steel items, which in a tropical, humid place is of high consideration.

Great write-up! I too have settled on the bellroy key cover after trying everything else. Its slim, and it keeps your keys from scratching up your other stuff if you just toss them in a bag loose. I have had the elastic band snap twice after a lot of use, so I wish they improved that bit.
Yeah I'm on my second one now. Will keep buying them as they fail though because they're so good!

All those items if I carried them in pants pockets would wear me down at the hips while walking. Pouches are good for cargo style pockets on the side of the pants' leg. But even then, the weight is noticeable. I carry a small sling bag for lunch & toss any edc items in it I'm not using throughout the day to lighten my pocket load out. My friends edc fanny packs for the same reason where they toss it up on the dashboard or hang it up somewhere. I like your thinking on your included items.
On the non-locking blade front. If its expected to be needed (e.g. you're out hiking or doing some diy) you can still carry fixed blade knives, its just not acceptable to carry one 24/7 for EDC (say to the corner shop).
But... you have cable ties. Cable ties can act as quite an effective lock around a slip blade. Just zip a couple up tight at the base of the blade and it'll prevent it from collapsing on your fingers. Useful in a pinch when you need to do something a little different with your blade than normal.

Glad you demonstrated the Zippo butane torch. I've always loved the Zippo lighter, find it very classic (pairs well with a Swiss Army) I dislike the traditional fuel version and had switched to the 'Electric' insert. The problem is that it does not fit into the traditional case and so I never carry it. I suspect the electronic 'guts' make it thicker (?) and so it may not 'seat' as neatly as it should.

I have Swiss Handyman and Champ, I prefer the Handyman for EDC kit it has everything I need, Champ is a bit too much, for when out camping only
We put keypad locks on the house and garage so we don’t need any of those keys with us. Easy fix and massive convenience
i can highly recommend the Spyderco Lil native G10 as an edc knife
That's why I wear cargo-pants. "Stuff" goes left leg, wallet goes right leg (and in corona-times a a small hand-sanatizer with it), keys in the right front pocket, phone in the left front pocket, flashlight in a belt pouch.
NOTHING in the back pocket(s). That has some benefits: 1.) You can't accidentelly sit on your phone. 2.) Your phone or your wallet can't easily be stolen from your back pocket; you have more control. 3.) The back pocket(s) can be used occasionally for a small umbrella or for a folded (thin) shopping bag - hands stay free.
I carry a small roll of dyneema string its really strong for its size and easy to carry in its small container.
Great video man. Have you considered instead of the parachord for the keys, using like a phone cord for it not to be fixed if the keyhole is further away? Cheers!
I did think about that but havn’t found the need so far. The carabina allows for quick disconnect if there is something in my way etc. Parachord lies nice and flat which a coiled thing wouldn’t do too. Cheers!

I’ve just ordered the Bond UK friendly multi tool. Although I’d not be completely comfortable carrying it in public, Leatherman do say it’s UK legal.

those lighters are enough to melt solder. so personally i would have a little bit of solder and a small bit of electrical tape :-) perun? is it made in the baltic?

As important as the EDC set up is to me, a great pair of trousers are the essential counterpart to a well balanced EDC set up, and I couldn’t help but notice yours, they look great. The ones in the vid are a bit tight actually, they were just from Next. I will be doing a video on the ones I have now soon though and these change the game!
@@BenVallack I cannot wait for that video! Trousers for me are the hardest thing to get right, something rugged enough but that can still be worn causally, and provide all the pocket space needed for EDC and daily use

Just one thing: For an EDC, it might be better to take one of those tiny flat torches/lanterns. The one you carry is a bit heavy. But still a great idea.

Good point about not carrying your garage key on your person, I lost whole set of keys once, but I kept spares and able to replace them all except for a Sentry Safe key because you can't get that cut, but from hence forth I don't carry the garage or Safe key because it should seem obvious, why would you need to, sentry safe I need to get into the house to open and the garage key is only the convenience of being able to get into the garage without having to go into the house first, other than that, it is just an extra thing to lose
I have been devising an EDC over many years, this video outlines a lot of useful items as a part of any kit, but everyone will have different stuff, you get a feel for what gear you will use in a daily basis, one thing I never leave the house without is the Swiss Army Knife, it is the single most useful piece of gear ever
Yeah, to avoid losing that garage key, just keep it in the house, tied to its normal storage spot by a really long bungee cord :-).
Hey! I've just recently discovered your videos and subscribed after watching a few of your keyboard videos! I have been in the EDC space for a while actually and researched quite a bit. Have you considered getting a handkerchief? I purchased one from MightyHanks, and they are smaller, have microfiber on one side, machine washable, and fit in my back pocket without a fuss. They are so convenient for cleaning my glasses and phone/laptop/tablet screens!! Not to mention you can buy them with really snazzy designs :) Keep making content mate! I really enjoy how thought out and intentional your videos are!
That is actually a really good idea, finding a glasses cleaning cloth around the house is never as quick as I’d like. It’s quite a versatile thing to carry, cheers!

Very interesting. But I usually go the complete opposite route. I barely even carry anything around. I don't even bring my phone to school, only when I'm outside somewhere that's farther than 20 minutes by foot or I feel like I need my phone for something. The only things I carry aroung are paper tissues (due to stuffy nose in winter) and sometimes my keys. But your way approaching it is very interesting. I definitely want to try building a kit like that, that I can easily move between different bagpacks.
I have a new version of this coming soon. Simpler and lighter.
I like Olight and have used a few around the world, but just know they dropped the ball with the Open. The proud button comes on in your pocket and kills the battery, and my first refill didn't write well at all. Turns out the pressurized refill wasn't made right and came dry.
I carry edc equipment but being in the UK never yet seen anyone else with one. Lock open knives,safe to work with but illegal here.A law obviously made by someone who has never done any manual work. Good kit you carry,useful stuff.
If you ever want something different than the arc wallet I highly recommend a chums wallet. You can fit those same items and it's water resistant and like 9$ in the US atleast. Love mine. Have talked about them on my channel. Great video keep it up!
I have a chums wallet, and really like it. I can fit the cards I need and cash and still have space to put a knife or chapstick or whatever I need in the small outside pocket. I’ve had it for a few months now and haven’t had any issues with it
@@chrisj3423 absolutely solid purchase. I bought a bunch to swap out as they wear out but haven't needed any and I've carried this one for like 5 years. Very minimal, if any noticeable wear. plus they're much more comfortable than rigid wallets.
I think a fanny pack would make more sense in your case. I found the best design for ultralight EDC lighting to be Fenix HM50R. It's better than that Olight in a few ways and its only shortcoming is the lack of magnetic tailcap.
Great Ideas Ben, I have a zippo insert on the way from Fleabay. Have you ever considered a Swiss army knife? I carry the handyman, no locking blades but it has two blades saw and pliers plus lots of other goodies.
All my stuff lives in a bum bag that sits inside the front room which I just pick up on the way out the house.
Cheers Russ, yeah I looked hard at swiss army knives, trouble is I've had the screwdrivers close on my fingers enough times to value the full locking tools on the Rebar. Also why I ruled out the smaller non-locking Leathermans. At least this way I have everything locking that is allowed to be!

I really liked how you explained your methodology - you've actually made me want to revisit EDC after a long time away from the idea. Like many others perhaps, I fell down that rabbit hole, but got off at 'my stop.' But this makes me think I will try it again. Maybe this time I can get something working that will stick.
