My Credit Card Sized EDC Pocket Kit

  • In this video I look at my tiny wallet. This wallet is absolutely tiny and by itself weighs just 5g. The full kit I keep in it is 130g and contains a full day-to-day survival kit for dealing with unexpected events throughout the day wherever I am.
    This kit compliments my 'augmentation kit' that I keep in my other pocket. In contrast to that kit, the items in the wallet don't need to have super-fast access but they are all selected to save the day in various scenarios.

    Great update! Thanks Ben. I have a similar fixit kit that is normally in a coat pocket. I always carry the Midnite Manager which I use the most. Probably because it is always with me. Keep trying other items and discard them when I don’t use them. I am working on a mini toolkit update with a pocket sized pouch. I think the key thing is not to overload a pocket pouch or it becomes uncomfortable to carry.

    Brilliant use of something (the wallet) that has been right under our nose & you show us how to use this piece of kit for your EDC. I used something similar for flying - AAA torch (flashlight) pocket pen, some cash, ear buds, alcoholic wipe, ear plugs & a few band aids. I even folded a spare mask when we needed these on flights. Great to have all these things at the ready when get onboard a flight.

      Yeah I was really pleased to get this solution in place. Instead of thinking about new pouches for the gear, just use the actual wallet. Now we have phones to handle payments there's no need to carry loads of cards and cash any more so makes sense to re-think the wallet a bit!

    Interesting to see how you've evolved your kit since the original EDC Video, you did some years prior. After watching those videos I did take on board, your ideas and implemented them myself. So my EDC Pocket Carry tools are very much inspired by your videos. It is quite the weight in the pocket, however it is balanced quite nicely against the weight of my phone. The interesting thing is that the system works perfectly with Jeans, but not so well with Chinos. I can say with confidence that the divergence approach does out perform a Leatherman Surge.
    I would suggest thinking about a precision screwdriver set, I'm yet to find one that would nicely complement the existing Victorinox though, perhaps you'll have better luck. I'm currently leaning towards the adapter bit and then a separate set of 4mm bits, in their own little case. Also tweezers, would be useful.

    Hi Ben. Looks pretty neat. I managed to get hold of a couple of (very) cheap, mini pouches in soft leather from a local retailer, which I now carry all the time. Aside from your current contents, I'd suggest you might consider one of the small victorinox knives (inc tweezers, toothpick, scissors etc) and maybe a short length of micro cord for those scenarios where glue might not suffice ? If you’re carrying first aid stuff two suggestions for the extra space - first choice would be nitrile gloves, useful for first aid or even just if you need to fix something that’s filthy, a resuscitation shield basic life support can be done without rescue breaths (certainly was taught that way during the peak of the pandemic) but is more effective with breaths and a shield might make it less gross.

    Maybe you could fit some tweezers in there in case of a splinter or other precision tasks, but I suppose the knipex could be used similarly so you could try and stuff the victorinox scissors in there? I think you can get those separately as replacement part for the card tools which might fit in that pouch in it's entirety which have some tweezers (really weak ones tho) and other pretty useful stuff (one with a lens in case you lost your glasses or need to find a splinter)

    that's a great, little pouch - I'll have to check it out! As for suggestions, how about a small pair of folding scissors or tweezers? A length of bank line would offer cordage for very little space. For me, it would be lip balm, but I realize not everyone shares my addiction. But a small plastic bag with some medications might also be a good idea. A safety pin also comes in handy from time to time. A couple of those little toothpick flossers could be helpful. I did HVAC at my old job so I have used a lot of Duck Tape. All of this looks good except the Duck Tape. From how thin it moved and how it flexed that looks like cheap Duck Tape. So I recommend not the best Duck Tape for HVAC because the glue is just too strong on that for fixes intended to be a temporary fix until you do it properly later. Instead I recommend what I have been using the last two years; specs are 'easy tear' 'exterior grade' 'easily removable' so that last does not mean the glue is weak, but it is a tape that can be removed even six month later without leaving a glue residue on your surface. So it is like the painters tape that has different recommended removal time periods...but it is much thicker and more durable so it can survive heavy use.

    • @BenVallack
      @BenVallack  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think most people don’t realise just how small and light it is. I use it surprisingly frequently. I was wheeling a tyre from garage into the car the other day and noticed a screw in the tyre. Relieved to see it hadn’t actually gone through I pulled it out with my Knipex - and I did that instead of going into the already open garage and finding my big pliers. And this is even needing to open the pouch and take the sharpie out of the way first. That was still easier than going back to the garage at the end of the driveway.

    • @BOSExperience
      @BOSExperience 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BenVallack I understand it sometimes is handy to have pliers on you. I sometimes carry a Leatherman or other mulitool but that has more than one tool. But your garage is open and has tools in it but also your car has a repair kit (small toolbox) in it normally. What if a screw came loose (flathead or philips) your Gripex is useless and your mulitool isn't. You also can't cut wire or rope with a Gripex. So as a small tool for a designated repair job I get it. Not as EDC. That to me makes absolutely no sense at all.

I also have a Victorinox Huntsman as well as the Victorinox bit driver kit, and then the 4 ‘augmentation’ items in my right pocket. With a Victorinox Huntsman and a Knipex you still don't have a wire cutter or a file and you still can't fasten a screw that has a screwes on both ends. @@rcascioli Have a look at the Sealey or Sabrecut (it's sold under both brand names) mini ratchet, which has inline driver capability too, and a 72 tooth flat ratchet. Alternatively there are bike ratchets with bits made by Topeak and others which are more similar in size to the Victorinox one he has, about 10mm in length. The Sealey ratchet is shorter but it's a bit heavier as it's thicker.
      Alternatively you can (and I do) carry a screwdriver handle bit holder, the smallest is the Wera 813, the size of a Bic lighter. If you need to torque up more you can use the Knipex Cobra XS if you carry the bit extender, you put it in the adjustment slot in the pliers and tighten and it grips it. Hard to explain clearly but it works.

    That’s not really a wallet, it’s a women’s change purse made into a pointless EDC pouch.. This is what normal pockets are for, why not just put your sharpie and pliers in your pocket like a normal person? All the pouch does is complicate things..?
