Pretty much every single generational refresh is not worth upgrading to if you already have the previous generation, this just makes it more compelling of a purchase to those who are multiple generations behind (e.g. 11 years behind, me) instead of forcing them to get a device that’s already 3 years old or making them wait another few years for the next big “innovation,” whatever and whenever that will be.
I completely agree! I have a gen 11, and then an ancient paperwhite I still read because it’s JUST narrow enough to fit in my purse: within a sentence or two, I forget how ancient it is.
I still use a 10+ year old kindle lol. Only wanting to upgrade because of the background lighting which I miss from my gen 4. Other than that I am still completely satisfied with it.
@@triciacarr5019 The only reason I even upgraded from a used Paperwhite 3/7th gen is that the 5/11th gen being bigger and more importantly higher resolution made a big difference in reading manga (also the added storage helps). For normal books the difference is minimal to nonexistent. Heck, I even prefer the older model's lack of another layer on top.
Obviously this video isn’t about when you are already reading on whatever Kindle you have. This video is for people who are thinking of which Kindle to buy.
I'm glad you addressed the screen being more cream and less white than the 11th generation but it actually looks way more creamy in person than in your video by far. the 11th generation is like looking at a new newspaper and the 12th generation looks like looking at an old yellowed newspaper in real life. A new user to Kindle will never notice or know the difference but I do think that older users will be bothered by it. The brighter you turn the device up the more the text looks more brown and not black on the 12th generation. That's not the same on the 11th generation.
@philologus6577 that's why, because of the yellowish screen of the new many we're not going to change. The problem is... Will the next generations change that? To read, I'd rather stay with the 11th generation.
@@philologus6577 couldn’t tell from the TH-cam vid, but I thought with the brightness at 24, the black contrast actually looked better on the gen 11. Might just be the camera focus. I use mine at brightness 12, warm 4. Is the screen still cream on the new at that setting? I quite like having the choice between bluish or orange, or none.
@@rudevectors8018 black contrast is definitely better on the 11th generation. The 12th generation actually makes the text look more brown than black the higher you turn up brightness. There's nothing you can do to mitigate the creamy hue on the 12 generation either because it's actually a tint in the screen itself. Not the lights.
I ordered the signature 11 three weeks ago, just before the update. When they announced the update, returning the 11 for the 12 signature. Sure, little difference between the two, but I keep my e-readers for a long time (still, use my 9 year old voyage, which I’m updating from), but the speed, jade color and (about) $40 difference whiter (non blue) with the slight yellow tinge is preferable. Going for the latest is my choice.
@@LASoundCrafter I did exactly the same thing with my 3 week old 11th gen, knowing I'd still have this kindle in many years' time. I'd still be using the old "keyboard" model if the electronics hadn't failed on me. Anyway, I agree, the 12th gen is easier on the eye. And if you do much highlighting (I do, adding annotations for Readwise) then the slight speed increase is useful.
I got my new Kindle Signature Edition yesterday afternoon. I spent a couple of hours playing with it and doing some reading. I upgraded from the 11th gen. The first thing I noticed is this thing is FAST. Page turns are lightning fast. Swipe down for controls is super fast. There is no lag that I perceive in any of the usual things you do with a Kindle. It's about as fast as using my iPhone and my iPad, i.e., I don't feel like the Kindle is "old technology". Honestly I think this is worth the upgrade alone. I like the new background color. I use the warmer background on my iPhone Kindle app and both are about the same. This is another thing I like. I'd rather have the same visual experience whether I'm looking at a smaller screen or a bigger screen. The "metallic" back doesn't seem metallic. I'm curious why they use that name. It is smoother than the 11th gen but still "grippy". At first use it seems like it will be less of a fingerprint magnet and easier to clean. I need to use it more before I'll really know. I think it's a worthy upgrade. I suspect I'll use this one for a long time before upgrading again.
I have the PAPERWHITE 5 and the PAPERWHITE 4 and and I also have the 2022 BASIC in Denim Blue. They all look and function like brand spanking NEW. I honestly can't see a good reason to upgrade yet. Granted the 2024 doe's seem slightly faster but definitely not "MUCH" faster as stated. At $160.00 or $200.00 I'll wait until the prices drop and they definitely will soon as always.

Hardly worth an upgrade. After 2 years wait you have a tiny screen increase and slightly faster page turns that changes nothing for most readers. what about the pdf reading? my pdf files (only text, around 120MB) on gen 11 usually crash the device - as well as the browser, when i read newspaper websites... (actually, i wonder when it'll be able to comfortably navigate through google maps).
My 11th Gen Paper White has a bug where it will lock itself into the book I’m reading not allowing me to access the menu by clicking on the top of the screen-this prevents me from using any other part of my Kindle except accessing the settings menu. This only happens if I close my case (locking the Kindle) while in the book and leave it for a while. The only way I can get back to my Library is by restarting the device. Has anyone else encountered this situation?
I'm a die-hard paperback carrier who's now going to try a kindle...the 11th gen looks like a good starter kindle. I don't mind the delay in page turns since i usually turn pages by hand, lol. Thanks for this vid!
This is NOT worth the upgrade. And DO NOT make the same mistake as I. I traded my perfectly usable 11th gen (yes just tiny bit slow but never had a single issue) in to get a discounted 12th gen and I highly regret my decision. I’ve been battling Amazon for weeks now regarding my own purchase of the 12 gen paperwhite. There’s a VERY obvious yellow banding on mine and I went out for a swap and this one has it too! And then I asked to get my 11th gen back and they say that they can’t give it back!!! The problem apparently is something to do with the adhesive used for the new line up. Deeply concerned that this video doesn’t mention the yellow banding problem so please be wary. ALL the new models have this same issue!!!!
@ so basically, when you have the backlight turned on, especially cool whiter light and not warm light setting, you can see a very feint yellow vignette like band on the bottom of the screen. At first I didn’t see it but as time went on I started noticing it and now I can’t unsee it. Amazon are doing swap outs for ones that don’t have this issue but I’ve been unlucky enough to be landed with one with the same exactly issue apparently a mix-up. Getting it replaced AGAIN but it’s just taking long and this is just frustrating. If you’re a first time buyer, I’d wait a month or so before I try buying one so they can replace all the faulty stock.
0:10 right😂 2:06 I can see that. As someone with sensitive eyes I feel like I would notice that a lot... Not sure if it's something I would get used to or like or dislike. But I definitely noticed right away! 🤔 8:58 while I did absolutely love the color I found it very dramatic and hilarious of Amazon to release a device that's basically the exact same and continuously add the word "new" as if it was so great and amazing 😂😂😂
yeah... i got the gen 11 paperwhite in june 2022, so im not due for an upgrade for a good few years. amazon has completely missed the mark on innovation and features users actually want. im hoping by the time i need a new ereader kobo will have fixed the contrast issues on their color device and that they still have physical buttons
I have a PW 7th Gen that I put in a new battery a couple years ago. Still works flawless but the blooming of the 4 leds at the bottom always bothered me a little. I just ordered an 11th gen with leather case, mint condition for $90 on ebay.
Thanks for this great review! Too bad though you did not talked about the contrast and crispness of the text as it allegedly better on the new one. That would been nice to hear your opinion.
I've had the 11 and 12 side by side and didn't notice if they were. Colour tint, screen size, more solid blacks in dark mode, and response times were obvious differences (and I preferred the 12 for all of those). I didn't notice a real difference in text in light mode, but I think text in dark mode does look crisper.
All of the new kindles are an easy pass I think. The upgrades are so lacklustre that the range simply feels like a rush job. The coloursoft is just a joke of a product. I do think they have handed Kobo a golden ticket. Kobo were applying pressure already and now they only need to do minimal upgrades to the Kobo range to completely knock kindle sideways. I'll be sticking with the kindle signature I have had for over a year and watching what Kobo do.
I would have liked a demonstration of typing a note comparison. I feel that my 11th gen has so much “lag” as I try to type into the search bar or type a note. It would be great if that were improved on the new 12th gen.
Does the slight tint really on the 2024 PW really have an effect on usability? I usually read manga on my 2021 model and there's noticable processing lag (downloading, opening big books, sometimes freezing, etc) and I thought the dual core processor in the 2024 model would help 🤔
Yes its faster but do we really need it to be faster when turning pages? The 11th Gen isnt even slow. I might get the new basic just because of its new color Matcha 😅
My brain switches back in forth between thinking one has brighter background or another. All in all I think they are going in the right direction with upgrading e-ink sandwich, they should bring back etched glass from voyage next time
I saw some over reviees of Kobo 2e vs Kobo BW (Carta 1200 vs 1300) and it was also pointer out the more yellow screen of Carta 1300. This seems to be the case here.
Great device, not worthy of an upgrade from the previous generation, but definitely interesting for newcomers. And it sets a new standard in ereaders technology. If I may say, I think the bezel color should've matched the different colors of the back. Or at least be white, like the Scribe in the green version. JMHO.

The soft-touch plastic on the 11 is a horrible fingerprint magnet. Worse yet, it's almost impossible to remove the gunk. Fingers crossed that the "metallic" (I hear it's actually plastic) will be better in this regard. Yours is the first review to dwell on the warmer screen color. Hardly worth an upgrade. After 2 years wait you have a tiny screen increase and slightly faster page turns that changes nothing for most readers. Nobody reads books so lightening fast that a fractional page turn improvement makes any difference.
I'll stick to my 2021 PW till I see some huge improvement.
Good luck with that e-ink technology moves exceptionally slow hence why most people have their e-readers for years before they consider upgrading
@@AlessandraSmeraldi 2024 still uses e ink
Hi Sir, can you demo Text-To-Speech function please? I am unable to get it work, and navigating while VoiceView turned on is extremely slow.
worth an upgrade for me. selling my 11th gen regular paperwhite and buying the 12th gen Signature Edition. More memory for audiobooks, faster interface and page turning, wireless charging and auto adjusting light.
How do you find playing audiobooks from the kindle I normally use my phone so I’m just wondering if the experience is better
@@AlessandraSmeraldi no it really isnt. But i get no disturbanses from the phone going off with text messages and phonecalls. Dont het the urge to pull my phone out. I just put the phone on silent in a different rom and walk around or lay in bed with a bluetooth speaker or headphones. I like it this way. Only thing i miss is a decent speaker on the kindle so i have that option as well
I have 3 words for you: Denim vs Matcha 🤔
what about the pdf reading? my pdf files (only text, around 120MB) on gen 11 usually crash the device - as well as the browser, when i read newspaper websites... (actually, i wonder when it'll be able to comfortably navigate through google maps).
I really wanna know too since I wanna study on it
And now we need a good case that is available and affordable. 😅
Does the case for 11th generation fits to 12th??
@doal9525 no it doesn't. The 12th gen is slightly bigger.
Will you do the comparisons with the new Kobo's please?
@@shanessinging what is the yellow banding? It's my first time getting an ereader and I really don't wanna regret getting the 12th🥲🥲
How about under direct sunlight?
7:05 I honestly prefer the warmer light even without the warmth turned up. I have a warmer light on my phone too
Same. Less blue if Definitely preferable...
I'd love a comparison with the Oasis 7inch.
Was this video done using the latest firmware which just released for the 11th gen? People have claimed that has improved page turn speed
Yes my 11 is so much faster with the update
If only it had page turn buttons, then it would be a worthwhile upgrade.
I really like the idea of a charging stand. I wish my oasis had one.
0:10 right😂
2:06 I can see that. As someone with sensitive eyes I feel like I would notice that a lot... Not sure if it's something I would get used to or like or dislike. But I definitely noticed right away! 🤔
8:58 while I did absolutely love the color I found it very dramatic and hilarious of Amazon to release a device that's basically the exact same and continuously add the word "new" as if it was so great and amazing 😂😂😂
We need the Kindle vs the new Paperwhite
Awesome review!
yeah... i got the gen 11 paperwhite in june 2022, so im not due for an upgrade for a good few years. amazon has completely missed the mark on innovation and features users actually want. im hoping by the time i need a new ereader kobo will have fixed the contrast issues on their color device and that they still have physical buttons
@@catherinedeparis7130 could be they couldn’t even tell a difference?
I do not see the "fuzziness" as described, and I do not care about the swiping. Thank you for the video, no need for me to upgrade.
I would have liked a demonstration of typing a note comparison. I feel that my 11th gen has so much “lag” as I try to type into the search bar or type a note. It would be great if that were improved on the new 12th gen.
At least it already improved 😂 it's no real browser
So you can confirm that the slight Warmness on the Gen12 is new ? I don’t want to return it again for the second time. 😢
Yes, we did an entire video on it. It is a warmer look than the previous version
@ I saw this video. I just wanted to hear you say it lol I would have been devastated to return it a second time.
Sold my 10th gen paperwhite and ordered 12th gen SE. With Black Friday price on it, it's kinda no brainer decision
Why do they keep making these bigger. I want one that's the size of a paper back novel.
Does the slight tint really on the 2024 PW really have an effect on usability? I usually read manga on my 2021 model and there's noticable processing lag (downloading, opening big books, sometimes freezing, etc) and I thought the dual core processor in the 2024 model would help 🤔
The only thing I want changed is for the kindle to show the book covers without internet. My 11 is perfect except for that one major major annoyance.
Thank you for going over the ankle charger because I have the previous one
@@ToriDanielle wow, that's great. A lot of people were asking us about that :-)
Yes its faster but do we really need it to be faster when turning pages? The 11th Gen isnt even slow. I might get the new basic just because of its new color Matcha 😅
Not only turning pages, you may benefit from faster menu, back and forward navigation
My brain switches back in forth between thinking one has brighter background or another. All in all I think they are going in the right direction with upgrading e-ink sandwich, they should bring back etched glass from voyage next time
Not worth updating. The newer color versions or new oasis version may come in the future I think. So stick with 11 for a few more years
Expectations: PaperWhite
Reality: PaperGrey
You mean PaperCream?
@@tavusion not white anyways. They're lying in the product name.
and the retail box wasnt helping either
It would have been nice if the Signature Edition had micro-etched glass front like the one on the Oasis, and at least 64GB of storage.
The screen on paperwhite models is fuzzy because of the plastic screen cover. it hurts the sharpness of the text. the new model doesnt fix it.
I saw some over reviees of Kobo 2e vs Kobo BW (Carta 1200 vs 1300) and it was also pointer out the more yellow screen of Carta 1300. This seems to be the case here.
The 11th gen was a huge leap over the 10th gen. This new kindle feels like it is a polish of the 11th gen.
5:30 you are wrong. Many zexh youtubers tested that old hardware performs identical to their brand new performance level.
Now compare with kobo libra 2
Sticking with my faithful Boox Nova Air.
So better screen... good.
Not worth an upgrade from 11 to 12 but. If you don't have one yet!
Great device, not worthy of an upgrade from the previous generation, but definitely interesting for newcomers. And it sets a new standard in ereaders technology.
If I may say, I think the bezel color should've matched the different colors of the back. Or at least be white, like the Scribe in the green version. JMHO.
My ferret broke my Kindle Paperwhite 11 gen, so i don't another option and i buy this one, I hope works fine...
I must have had the worst Kindle ever because the refresh was so garbage I sent back the same day and never even cracked open my Scribe.
Gen 11 light looks uneven.

My 12 is black
I have an 11 and will get my 12 in a couple of days. I got the Signature Edition because of the "metallic" enclosure. Reviewers (including this one) aren't commenting on it to speak of.
I use the warmer color on my iPhone Kindle app and I much prefer it, so it's it's similar I'll be really happy.
Good review. Best one I've watched.
@@emmgeevideo hi one you get yours, please let me know, how does the grip of the metallic kindle feel like? I mean is it plasticky or soft touch like previous models? I don't want it to be slippery
@@Gauravi25 It is a bit more plasticky (a bit more friction as on my macbook but it is warmer than the metal, so more plastic ;) ) but i like it much more than the soft-touch of the gen11 Paperwhite. It seems that i also have less fingerprints (what i can say after one week). I also hope that the kindle stays some years in this state, my 11. gen is hard to clean, almost impossible for resale (so my dad is happy now ;) )
@@Gauravi25 It isn't all that different at first use. It is definitely "grippy" but less than the 11th gen. Not slick at all. After a half day of use I do think it will be less of a fingerprint magnet. That doesn't bother me as much as the inability to get it clean. I'll have to use it more and try to clean it to be sure.
The newer one is Just a bit faster. In my opinion It’s not worthy the change.
Great comparison. Thanks. The speed of the new one is enough to make me upgrade, but I'm holding out for the Colorsoft!
I'm in love with all my Kindles - currently Gen. 11
I'm not happy with it's akku performance:
I'm reading a lot and need a clear font without serifs. Easy to adapt, no prob. But I feel I have to turn the print type more bolder to achieve a good contrast.
May this setting lead to a shorter performance? (days instead of weeks).
Can you tell how Gen. 13 performs as it comes to contrast?
Thank you for your outstanding review 🙏👍
Its very similar xD. If you have a 11th gen, don't buy the new
the "ecology thing" is just a stupid thing since it's just a way to catch more clients but it makes "weak" the body
2024 kindle is less white, they are preparing people for the kindle color which will not be white too. Just saying, not based on anything.
No need to upgrade.
