  • Two years ago, I created a video look at the 911 GT marketplace and the strange atmosphere that Porsche had allowed to happen.
    The video is here: • The Truth About Buying...
    Today, we revisit that topic and ask the question - can you buy a 911 GT3 again, without losing a lot?

    Great video! I'm actually pleased to see the arse drop out of the P car market. Investor speculators with no appreciation of the actual value of a GT3 (that being an incredible unfiltered driving experience) just about ruined the market for a period of time. Cars, especially GT cars, are there to be driven and enjoyed, not sat in a garage in some speculative "asset" collection. I achieved a life long dream last year and bought a 991 GT3. It gets tracked and thrashed on B roads regularly. The fact I'll lose money never enters my mind. Porsches should be driven like they were stolen. To hell with cars being treated as non depreciating assets!!!

    If you want any sports car, I’d suggest you wait until end of the summer:
    1. The fallout of Covid will be truly known by then. Lots of people will sell their toys; they aren’t essential
    2. People buy cars, especially sports cars for the summer and sell before winter kicks in. Great time to buy if you can lose a summer of driving
    3. It gives you time to be patient and think things through. If it still makes sense and you still want it then go for it. Impulsive purchases are rarely good

    • @Dudeisthere
      @Dudeisthere 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree. Due to the current economic situation luxury car dealers are going to struggle to get cars off their lots. There are already decent discounts happening, this will probably go on for some time until this Corona shit is over. So id say if you can afford a car like this now the next few months is a good time to buy, yes the cars will most likely depreciate, but thats always a risk and as Jay already said buying these cars for profit alone doesnt really make sense in the first place.

    Another great, honest video on a car which is purely designed for track and “everyday” use ability. Investing in a car of this nature means your taking the privileges away from the fun and the design aspect, creating higher forecourt prices, the purest is not being able to warrant using the GT cars as Porsche intended. My wife and I have plans to buy one of these cars, bucket list, to enjoy the rest of our lives touring the British isles, sounds more fun than investing doesn’t it? Investors buy houses, it’s a no brainer, GT cars are for the purest not investors🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🥂

I applied the same logic to buying my own 2010 GT3 RS back in 2013 and added a 2008 GT2 last year, both being high mileage cars. I'm so pleased with both, and my total price paid for both cars is roughly equivalent to the price of a single 'cream puff' example of each. Thinking of a 991GT3 to actually drive, this has been very helpful. In the next 6 months do you think there is more value in the gen 1 or gen 2? Prices are around 20% lower for gen 1and I wonder if, as a quick but by no means race driver, I would really notice the difference. A Porsche experience instructor I was with last week reckoned the gen 2 was the best car Porsche have made, preferred it to the 992 GT3. I’m not buying for investment and will be buying outright but wouldn’t want to loose more than 20% over a couple of years.

    It's uncanny how similar our logic is when it comes to buying cars. I will always give preference to a car that has actually been driven rather than stored away under the cover for the very reasons you mentioned. And I have a rule that I adhere rigorously: Only buy that car if you are going to put at least 1500 miles a year on the clock! That rule has cost me an awful lot of money over the years.

    I do agree with most of Jay's points. I got into a high spec GT3 at the summer of 2018, the car was very boring and harsh to drive on the street, the turbo would have been a much better car. But the gt3 was brilliant when pushed above 70%, the problem is I dont track so I hardly ever get there. Driving the back roads pushing the car above 70% was nerve wrecking coz the limit was so high. I had it up for sale shortly but the 991.2 bubble as described by Jay just started. The market's flooded with gt3s (still is). It took me almost 8 months to finally trade it in for a scuderia, which i absolutely love. It's got presence and very exciting even on the street, and when pushed is a complete beast just like the gt3 was (even though not as refinely engineered). If I havent trade in the gt3, i would have lost another 20k today stuck in a car that's not right for me, so i am very glad i did that. The dealer who got my car ended up selling it at 5k below the trade value (they actually lost 10k with the conditioning they had to do). Looking at high mileage cars today for 90k, that's a steal with a warranty on the engine for another 3-4 years

    Good analysis with lots of good points (including buyer type of GT3 vs Turbos). The ratio between 997 C2S and GT3 vs 991 CS and GT3 will have a growing impact: as you said the 991 GTs are not as rare. That’s because they finished the Stuttgart factory upgrade (where all 911s are made, including GTs) and we’re able to make a lot of the GTs. I have a 997.1 C2S a 997 gen 1 GT3 is £70k, which would mean that I’d have to trade up £50k-ish just for the Metzger... No thanks...

    Good vid James. It’s worth noting though the engine issues on the 991.1 gt3. I believe Porsche farmed out a 10 year warranty through RAC to cover any blown engines of which there were many but after 10 years, you’re on your own, which is in about 2-3 Yrs time. The better car is the .2

    Great informative video as usual. Here’s an interesting reference data from Total911 magazine: 3000 991.1 GT3 vs 6000 991.1 GT3 RS worldwide. If you look at their 997 predecessors, their numbers are half and less. 991 is when Porsche opened the manufacturing Gates. Simply Porsche responding to demands?

    What I'm curious about is since they are testing the 992 GT3 right now, once the new GT3 is released what will happen to the 991.1 GT3 prices? How much did 997 GT3 prices dip when the 991.1 GT3 came out? We are at that point right now were I think they are still going to go down. Here in the US you can find 991.1 GT3s at around 100-110k. Is this going to be the price for those early GT3 cars moving forward or will they dip under 100k? I am thinking about pulling the trigger on a dot one going for 112k, but not sure if I should wait a little bit longer. Love the video FYI

    Great, pragmatic, summary Jay! As a 911 C2S owner who wanted a GT3 and was politely declined by dealer (🙄) I was, am, gutted. I’m not paying +50% for “an idea” tho - that idea being they’re an investment. My 911 is used as a daily, for European jaunts with the family and for Trackdays. I’ve put 33k miles on it in 3 years, and it’s amazing. Oh you’re so right about performance and noise too … I have the standard exhaust. On a 3.0l turbo gen 2. Sacrilege! Some would say. But no, when you put it in Sport mode it makes plenty of glorious noise, including the pops and bangs (why, why, are people so obsessed with them?) Anyway, great summary, really well presented. Hi Jay, another very informative video, what's your opinion on the 991.1 gt3 engine issues? If you were to buy one would you make sure it was "G engine spec" or wouldn't you be worried due to the 10 year warranty?

    • @stevelaclair2739
      @stevelaclair2739 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      “G” means nothing. G6 means everything, which didn’t ship from the factory. People can still blow the G0’s in the 2016’s, they’re just built marginally better to delay it. All you have to do is take the original engine (E, F, G, whatever) to the track a couple times and it’ll fault.

    My budget is a far cry from a GT3 but at a significantly lower price point I’ve owned one of Jay’s other cars- a Honda S2000 for over a decade as my daily. I’ve put loads of (reliable) miles on it and could sell it today for more than I bought it for.
    There’s plenty on offer from many makes at all price points that might not necessarily make money but will preserve capital or mitigate a loss and that’s a good use of funds which can provide smiles too.

    Very nice video but I have some minor criticism:
    1: Some graphics would've been useful to visualize the numbers.
    2: I didn't really understand what you meant with the 991 GT3 not being rare. Did you mean not rare on the market? That is certainly true as one can see by the numbers you presented. But if you meant rare in terms of production numbers, that is not really the case. There aren't firm numbers on the 991 GT3 yet but first numbers suggest that there are at max twice as much 991 GT3 compared to the 997 GT3. Taking into account that there are many more 991 than 997, in general, we have to ask why are there so many more GT3 for sale? It has to do much more with fluctuation than sales numbers

    I bought my 2018 GT3 off a speculator. He had gotten upside down on a 911R (supposedly paid $500,000.00 to a dealership for it!). I had absolutely zero sympathy for him and got the car (with all of the options I wanted, including Sapphire Blue paint and a manual tranny) for several thousand dollars below MSRP. That said, I would probably never buy another one. The buying experience was the worst I have ever experienced. The Porsche dealership I originally approached was owned by client of a close friend of mine, so I was a known entity. Too, I offered to pay cash. What was their attitude? Test drive? Ha! Available cars? Ha! The salesman looked down his nose at me and quickly told me only clients who had established a, "relationship," with them were able to obtain an order. "What kind of relationship," I asked. "Well, people at the top of the list have ordered 918 spyders," said the salesman. "Have a nice day," was my response. I have never had that kind of experience before buying a car. And I will (hopefully) never again. What a racket. If I ever do sell my GT3 and buy another sports car it will NOT be a Porsche. Can anyone say, C8 ZR1? Hhhhmmm...?

    I was a Porsche salesman in Sydney when the first 996 GT3 was launched, well actually it was "rumoured" rather than "launched". I got a hold of a file that was 40 pages typed on plain A4 paper detailing the specification. It was about 15% more money than the plain Carrera. I rang 3 of my 911 customers and told them to get to the showroom ASAP. All 3 ordered a car and the next week there were none left for Australia ever. My customers couldnt thank me enough. One tipped me an air fare to London!
    They were amazingly hard core compared to a Carrera, well priced and rare. That made them investible. When "the herd" run for it and they are overpriced they are not investible. Incredible that they (996) are now as a used car 4 times the price of a plain Carrera that was only 15% cheaper when new. The change of ownership to VW has in my view also led to a silly and confusing proliferation of "special editions" which are just VW group profiteering to the long term detriment of the brand.

    Hi Jay. I enjoy watching your videos and I’m wanting to ask you a question. I’ve forever been a Porsche fan since I was a child but haven’t had the opportunity to own one. I was looking at purchasing a Cayman S (981). However after falling in love with the 981 GT4 I’m hoping to be in a position to purchase one within the next 12 months. I’m an average guy with a decent job but not wealthy. I’m wanting to know if now is a good time to purchase a 981 gt4. I’m wanting to own the car for extended period of time and it won’t be a garage ornament. But I want to buy at the right time so I don’t break my bank. They range from £61k - £80k. What’s your thoughts?

    • @peterbett3076
      @peterbett3076 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      leerud69 i know you didn’t ask me but I have a GT4 that I bought in October 2018. It was very low mileage at 1500 and the exact spec i wanted - comfort seats, yellow and steel brakes, but cost £85k, so I went for it. There were one or two others sneaking under £70k at the time but not in the colour or with the seats I wanted. The car now has 14.5k miles and is probably worth £65k, so I’ve taken a big hit, not that I plan on selling it soon. In hindsight I should have been a bit more patient and waited for a higher mileage car to come up and compromised on the colour if necessary. I’d also never done finance before so felt in better hands at a Porsche dealership so I ended up paying extra for that obviously and a little extra interest rate on the finance. This is not a tale of disaster or regret by any means but it does show you can save a lot of money if you use due diligence and are patient.
      Ps I’m the guy from the GT4 strut tower failure vid on youtube “vehicle villains”

    • @leerud
      @leerud 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter Bett Hi Peter, thank you for the reply! I welcome any advice. And when you own a GT4 yourself then you’re a man who knows some information others like myself can find useful. I have been so close myself to going out and getting one financed last minute without thinking, but I haven’t luckily had other things going on which stopped me from doing so. I have noticed in the last 3-4 months the prices have dropped quite a bit which I expected with the release of the new GT4. And giving the current circumstances in the world I’m not sure wether to go for it now, or hold off and expect another drop. Like yourself I don’t expect the car to be an investment, but being human we don’t want to lose a lot of money in a short period of time. So would you advise on being a bit more patient and see how the market goes the next 12 months?. I don’t mind buying a gt4 with higher mileage at a cheaper rate being to me it’s a dream car.

      leerud69 if you can afford it in about 4-12 weeks time i would buy then. This will be when the panic selling is still peaking. There may be a small recovery towards Christmas when things start to get back to normal, but tbh you can’t get far wrong in the near future, just be patient and keep a very close eye on the classifieds

    I don´t know one GT3 or GT3 RS driver who would be so insane to spend so much over sticker for a car. People mostly use it on Trackdays and Touristenfahrten. It`s their dream toy and a lot of them have just a normal family car as 2nd runner. People like that think about brakes, tires, spare parts and in this category, the Porsche is the easiest car to handle. One guy I know had a 570 McLaren for a season and sold it because it costs too much to run in comparison. So a lot of them are really looking for what they spend and they don`t waste thousands more just to get a car early. - So I totally agree with what is said here in the Video. This overpricing doesn`t fly with most Porsche GT Owners.
