Is The 991.2 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Simply Too Hard & Fast To Enjoy On The Road?

  • I do enjoy a good 911, and I have driven many this week. However, some recent cars I have driven from Stuttgart have been a little too hard to enjoy on the roads. Today I'm driving one of the most hardcore models in the line-up - the GT3 RS, but on Scottish roads will it simply be too much of a track car to have fun in?

    Just a note on "the 600LT is way faster" that you mentioned: around the ring, the McLaren is more than 10 seconds slower. The 600LT is probably only faster in a straight line; put in some corners and the GT3 RS will gobble it up.

      I'd find that to be believable though, as in the McLaren is lighter and has turbos which would mean punchier acceleration. Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer the gt3, but I reckon the McLaren would be gone. Tyres could be a factor also

      just like Robert Mitchell (another fellow youtuber who spends his time on the ring) pointed out, you buy the McLaren because of how it feels, the noise, and how it looks. Actual performance is a secondary thing with McLarens. The Porsches are pretty much the most effective and efficient track tool you can buy right now. Especially the GT3 RS.

    just as an explanation to those who wonder why McLarens have narrower tyres: from a Vehicle Dynamics department point of view they have always chosen the approach (I think it started with Gordon Murray's F1) to put the narrowest tyre that can cope with the power. Hence the P1 has narrower tyres (unless I'm mistaken) than the 918 or LaFerrari. However its engine still allows it a very quick standing mile. The benefit is good steering feel and also a nice "driftable" car. You can power slide a 997 GT3 but on most dry roads it's not that easy for every day drivers (it is for Tiff Needell or Chris Harris who've practiced a lot). The modern 911s tend to be a bit "over-tyred". They feel very sharp and are a hoot on those welsh roads. A car that is more adjustable and fun for the average driver is a Cayman with not too wide sections front and rear. Ultimate track performance is typically conflicting with driving feel.

    Helper springs aren't actually contributing any support to the weight of the car. The spring rate of the helper spring is too low for that purpose. It is purely there to keep the main spring in the correct position. In fact, the helper spring is fully compressed most of the time, until the suspension is beyond a certain level of droop, does the helper spring expand. The reason why the GT3 RS has decent ride compliance on the right roads is because the damper rebound control is actually relatively soft.

  • @jryalls
    @jryalls 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I get what you’re saying about the GT2 but it’s actually a better road car because of the turbochargers. It’s got low down torque which makes it far more drivable. I’d still have the GT3 RS though because N/A

      I agree on the supercars, but hot hatches are doing it too. The latest crop of German "hyper hatches" like the A45S are too fast but also lost all the fun of a hot hatch. I test drove a new Type R thinking that would at least be fun, but it was waaaaay too serious. Looks mental but it's not a car you can drive like an idiot which for me is the whole point of a hot hatch. I bought a Porsche instead...but not a GT3RS (too fast...but mostly I can't afford it). I went for a 981 Cayman S, which I think is about the fastest car that you can throw around like a hot hatch. Has the boot space to match too.

      They actually make an amazing road car too, but only when you’re far away from a city, on un-policed ‘motoring magazine’ twisty roads and with some friends who have spent twice as much on their ultra-flashy, super high horsepower machinery (that far exceeds their driving ability). Then you can stick close to their tail without breaking a sweat, or romp off into the distance while their cars bottom-out. When you stop, they will all swear “there’s no way that thing has only 520bhp”...

The 8000-9000 rpm are the sweet spot and you are way above speed limits when you are there. This is a track tool, not a road car and for its purpose its THE perfect car. And I love the lizard green!

    Never really been a fan of the 911 but sometimes there is that sneaky admission that there is a certain one (and in this case it's painted in Lizard Green) that you would like to have parked on your front drive......

    This isn’t an entirely accurate review. There is loads of steering dynamic driving thrills, and amazing feel of tyre grip through the front or rear tyres in a 991.2 GT3 RS. I can only guess you wasn’t driving it fast enough, which is harder to explore on public roads. Drive it around the track like Silverstone, (which is what as RS is aimed at), then you will feel exactly what’s going on with those wide front tyres. This is an excellent car for driver feedback and communicating the limits. You will just lose your license way before, and zero fear of death, your bollox won’t even fit in the bucket seats trying on the road 🤷‍♂️

    You didn't like the 992 Carrera S Cabriolet you reviewed, but I'm intrigued to find out if your thoughts on the upcoming 992 GT3 manual will be the same or not. I'm sure the digital dashboard look won't be much different, but Andreas Preuninger told C.Harris and H.Catchpole that the front axle will feature double wishbone suspension - and I remember how much you like that suspension design. Time will tell.
