      After watching your video, it reminds me of a saying... the frog that lives at the bottom of a well knows nothing about the sea. The frog thinks the well is the whole world, but it's really just a tiny part. It's about being naive, or like being a small fish in a big pond.
      In this case, Quina is the frog that needs to get out of the well and see the whole world. I think if you don't approach Quina, he'll just stand around Qu's Marsh chasing those same frogs forever.
      Also, I think it's funny that the whole game deals with existentialism, but I got strong hints that the Qu's are imaginary. They're not real in the same sense as everyone else. I think.

      Being a comedic relief is never a good reason to have a character in a story. It's fine if they "are a comedic relief", but their role has to at least have a significant connection with the main character or one of the characters and not just a tag along. But strategic-wise, yeah she or he, is a useful member of the party.

    Quina is easily my favourite character in FF9. Unlike Cait Sith or Kimahri they're actually useful in your party, and their absurdity to the entire story and on a personal level is some great comedy relief. They also have such a pure, childlike personality and drive - I don't know how anyone can hate Quina.

      Cait Sith definitely misspelled the second name, though.

    Playing FF9 on Switch now. I love Quina and his/her unique skillset. Also has the most epic frog catching music ever.
    What I like about Quina the most, is that despite everything, s/he is a compassionate and optimistic being. S/he comforts Vivi, telling him that “I not human. You definitely human.” When chosen to go with Zidane at the end, s/he states that “leftovers good.”
    Quina’s simple view of the world is a change from everyone else’s views. S/he is an imaginative being, and always willing to help a hand.
    You don’t always need a dark backstory or angsty morals and actions. Sometimes, you just need to eat some frogs and move on with life. Be a free spirit.

    • @FF-Gamr
      @FF-Gamr  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's very true, no one has better frog-catching music than Quina! You're completely right, Quina doesn't have as much of a backstory as the other characters but that doesn't mean he/she is less important or motivated to explore the world. A great character.

    I named Quina after my dog who solely exists for food and following me everywhere I go, and it made a legendary FF character God-Tier. Probably my favorite FF character ever solely because of how ridiculous he/she is. It actually LOL’d when frog drop delivered the final blow to Necron to beat the game for me. Cemented Quina’s (Bubby’s) status as the GOAT for me. A freaking frog fell on the final boss and killed it 😂😂😂😂

    I love Quina. S/he’s hilarious! And so useful. S/he packs a punch (sometimes) and has many variable spells to learn. The perfect fourth member to compliment my usual general RPG party of physical attacker, magic attacker and healer.
    I love the scene (it might have been an ATE) in the game in Treno when a criminal is trying to kidnap Eiko by promising her a meal (I’ve forgotten the exact context) but Quina comes along and they mistake him/her for Eiko’s bodyguard and gets chased off by Quina yelling “give delicious food!” And running after them.

    • @FF-Gamr
      @FF-Gamr  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly - given that you can have four party members in battle I think Quina makes a good choice, given the character's range of abilities. Lvl5 death is particularly useful when you're trying to grind and level up your party pretty quickly. Yeah I know the scene you mean 😂 I like the fact that even the characters IN the game and inhabiting that world basically don't have a clue what Quina is.

  • @invisi-bullexploration2374
    @invisi-bullexploration2374 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    One memorable part of the game is where Zidane and Quina are stuck on a two person team. Zidane isn't shy about voicing his dislike if not utter contempt of Quina. Quina tells him not to worry and he's made a good choice. And later on during the boss fight Quina has a hilarious moment to shine. In another part of the game they assist Eiko in cooking, demonstrating that they are not completely selfish. Quina's story is that of a childish individual/deadbeat growing as a person.

  • @Ravenfellblade
    @Ravenfellblade 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    I love Quina! Quina and Vivi are my favorite FF characters ever, perhaps as much because of their interactions with each other. I feel like both characters are made better together, and neither would be as interesting in the absence of the other, though Vivi would still be a heart wrenching story. Quina knows himself very well, but knows little of the world, while Vivi knows little about either. Both are on journeys of self discovery, and both are different versions of the same coming of age, loss of innocence motif. While having very different backgrounds and personalities, they face many of the same hardships, and so develop a tight bond.
    Vivi and Quina's wedding scene is one of my favorite bits, too.
    Vivi is a popular choice for favorite FF characters, but I think we need to acknowledge that Vivi's journey, and his story, hits so many of its highest notes because of Quina.

    • @FF-Gamr
      @FF-Gamr  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well said, I agree completely. The dynamic of the party and how the characters interact with one another is what allows them to develop - they don't exist in isolation. Which is one of the reasons why FFIX is so good, every little interaction (however inconsequential it may seem) plays a part in each character's journey.

  • @WarlordXecc

    I always considered Quina to be male.
    Quina cannot equip female equipment, Zidane's Protect Girls ability does not work with Quina, Lamia's Entice is a spell which only works against Males that works against Quina. And also, Quale once calls Quina a "he".
    Either way, Quina was one of my favorite FFIX characters!

    Quina is one of those people who you meet. First they seem very obnoxious, self-centered and does what they want. Later you learn that because of their unwilling determination and little nudge, they pretty much are masters of the thing you love. Quina is very odd because compared to the other characters Quina could beat them easily if they were just smart enough. That is why Quina needs others to compensate their skills. I found quina's personality and journey pretty personal. Maybe it is the not fitting the mold persona or perhaps the hidden powers they could hold. I also remember firstly putting them aside for Vivi, Steiner and Garnet, because I felt that Quina was pretty useless. "Quina can eat, so what?" I didn't have patience with Quina to understand how powerhouse they can be.
    Maybe Quina taught me that when I personally evolve and start to experience new thoughts and ideas, I can also evolve similary as Quina did on their journey.

    Quinas quote in the german version is actually quite different. It says "Isch gehe meinen Weg, wasch dagegen? Aber manschmal brauche isch eine starke Hand, mampf..." which translates to "I'm going my, you have a problem with that? But sometimes I need a strong hand...". And the fact that Quina talks in the german version like they are constantly eating something makes Quina even more likeable in my opinion. I actually think it's quite cute and way better than the broken english but the translators did an incredible job and they put so much love into translating it to german, it's awesome really.

    Quina is the best... sure I overlooked them my first playthrough... but once I got into the Frog Catching subquest and decided to actually learn blue magic, I was impressed with their versatility... has not left my party since... Party is Zidane, Dagger, Freya and Quina... I like a summoner/white mage to heal, while Zidane lays down the hurt, Freya jumps and Quina... well, Quina is just Quina...
    Also always have Vivi marry em... x3

      Zidane, Dagger, Freya and Quina - good party. I'd either go with this or substitute Vivi in for Freya. First time I played I also thought Quina was just a joke character, but he/she is so much better than that. One of FFIX's strengths is that each character is clearly defined and you really can have so many different types of party.

I think Quina along with the Qu's bring in an unexpected depth upon replaying and seeing all the extra or miss-able scenes. I also believe the choice to make Quina genderless or gender vague was amazing. It was one of my first experiences growing up with any sort of representation of lgbtqia+.

    Hmmm.... Quina is indeed a very good character, however I don't use him/her in my party very often. I'd rather have Amarant and Freya, but it is still fun to eat the monsters so that s/he learns the blue magics. The frog minigame is also a very good escape from the main story.
    Seing some videos talking about Quina's potencial has open my eyes to how useful s/he is in the party. After all, I just didn't use him/her because I had no idea of how to put some abilities in use.

  • @ladyphoenixgrey3923

    Quina was always one of my favorites, even long before I ever understood how to use her.
    That opening tagline: “I do what I want. You have problem!?” hooked me and made me wanna know what it was. And once I got her in my party, she was only ever out of it when the game required. I can’t imagine her not being in the game, so to me she’s entirely integral to the story and the feel of the game.
    I can see how she’s not for the actual story, but when I play she has to be there or the game feels half-hearted.
    And I still feel this way 20+ years later. I’m actually doing a play through right now on PS4 and I just finished the Iifa Tree and all I can think is, “Yay! Back to Madain Sari to get Quina…and Amarant!”

    Why Quina works for me? S/he isn't an essential part of the game. You can neglect him/her if you wish. But when s/he is in the party she takes part in many conversations, changing the game in more than one way.
    His/her perspective adds the right emotional opposite to many conversations, breaking through the negative spiral some of the other characters experience.
    S/he kind of gives you the outsider's perspective, that you as a player experience when playing the game, making him/her more relatable in many ways. Because as the player you want to experience the world, you want to see new sights and explore new cities. S/he is the person you are, travelling with a group without actually sharing their purpose, but going along for the ride.
    Also s/he is a beast in battle when levelled-up and kept up-to-date with edible foes.

    I think that more than anything, Quina kinda suffered from Qus being pretty much the rarest intelligent race in the game. If memory serves, you only meet 3 different Qus, Quina, Quen and an unnamed Qu who works as a chef in Alexandria in the very beginning of the game. I think that one even had the exact model of Quina, but it couldn't have been Quina because at that point, Quina was still tied to the swamp.
    There were a lot of Qu Swamps all over the world, maybe having 1-3 Qus as NPCs being there Quina can converse with to broaden our Qu-Knowledge would have been a nice addition. It also would have helped Quinas Way of Eating to be more interesting!

    Her "twister" blu mag also can destroy high level enemies because it deals significant amount of damages.

    I wonder if Quina was partly inspired by Jar Jar Binks, from the Star Wars prequels. There are striking similarities between the two characters. They both live in a swamp, are solitary individuals, clumsy, free-spirited and good-natured, and appear to be nonessential to the main plot (unless you believe that Jar Jar is a Sith Lord in disguise!) Jar Jar doesn't share Quina's obsession with food, but there is a scene where he gets into trouble stealing from a stall. He has a long tongue as well, and a somewhat froglike appearance.
    Episode I: The Phantom Menace came out just before FFIX, and the Final Fantasy series is of course known for making Star Wars references. What's more, a line of dialogue from that film appears before the final boss ("Fear leads to anger..."), which establishes a strong connection between FFIX and that particular movie. It's entirely possible that Quina was designed as a homage to Jar Jar!

    Quina is legitimetly hilarious. My girlfriend who doesn't play games would look up at the screen in a scene with Quina in it and laugh out loud at some of his/her dialogue and antics. She's by far the funniest FF character ever imo. He's also maybe the strongest character in the game. Vivi is the most inetersting and lovable character in the franchise and the world it's self is beautiful and fascinating.Some of the best mini games in the franchise and arguably the best soundtrack in the franchise. This game is imo the top to bottom best FF game.

    quina is labeled genderless but the game treats it as male
    *master quale referred quina as "he" in one of his statements
    *lamia' s entice spell affects quina, which works only to males
    *protect girls ability wont work with quina
    *quina cannot equip female exclusive equipment and accessories

    Quina doesn't have a character arc because they don't need one. Their life is about absorbing and enjoying the experiences of life directly. I see Quina as a mirror to the player audience. People who don't get Quina don't get Final Fantasy IX.

    Also she is good support~

    I usually love blue mages, it's fun to collect the magic's and they are usually powerful and useful. But quina just never clicked with me, tbh a lot of ff9s characters didn't. It's quite an interesting look into him/her, and I wouldn't cut quina from the game, but I've never really considered quina party worthy.

    Quina is the JarJar of final fantasy. Cait sith is waay more pivotal to the plot then Quina is. Caith sith is the one who spies on Shinra telling the team what they are up to. Caith Sith is nessesary because it gives a humane face to the heartless corporation of Shinra. Throughout FF7 shinra is seen to be heartless, ruthless and apathetic to peoples feelings. Reeve gave shinra a touch of humanity, showing that not all shinra employees are terrible/ruthless. Caith Sith is also responsible for getting the black materia out of the Temple of the Ancients, without caith sith, there is no way the party would have gotten the black Materia. Quina was placed into the game because they needed a filler character. Yes Quina has some beneficial spells..but there are other/more effective ways to get the same effect. Vivi is a better healer then Quina (give everyone a coral ring, guess what? Thundaga turns into a Curaga) Amarant is capable of more effective support (high tide+monk flair=full party regen, full enemy weakness debuff) Freya can restore the partys hp/MP, she can eliminate the power of mages with her Luna ability. Quina is only effective once you put in time and effort into raising him/her, whereas everyone else already COMES powerful. Quina is utterly useless

    quina was great but i would have liked her outfit to be more traditinal towards a bluemage. a light blue outfit and hood. he she would have still looked loony but at the same time cool...
    i also didnt like how they ruined the black mage. the reason the black mage sprites face was black in the old games was because their face was shaded by their hat. black mages were encased in shadow, dark and mysterious, but they made it a cutesy doll... and then the knight job was ruined in the form of steiner.... so damn goofy and annoying. i really wished beatrix joined the team instead of steiner or at least have her an additional playable character... and then my favorite job class, the dragoon, was ruined... the dragon armor that they wore was completely trashed for an outfit that made her look fat and rediculous. these 4 could have been better in my opinion.... vivi and steiner can be kept the same but quina and freya need a new costume option... and beatrix needs to be a new hidden character option.

    I haven't played FFIX so I can't give an opinion on Quina Quen's role in the story, but I do know that FF9 was meant to be a throwback to earlier titles. Quina's character design (and everyone else's for that matter) makes a lot more sense if you were to imagine Quina as a NES or SNES sprite. From both the front and back, Quina has a distinguishing physical trait - her protruding tongue when facing the camera, and the broad red coat that sticks out from the background when facing away from the camera. I assume that's why other characters have specific physical traits that "stick out" so distinctly (Zidane's tail, Eiko's ribbon, Freya's ears and staff); they were designed as if they were elaborate concept art for what would become 32x16 pixel sprites.

    • @FF-Gamr
      @FF-Gamr  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a really good point, I hadn't considered that to be honest. When you compare a lot of the character designs to those of 7, 8 and 10, they do seem a lot more 'unique'. Great comment, thank you!

    • @theenglishman
      @theenglishman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well 7's characters were designed around the limits of early understanding of PS1 hardware. It's why everyone has big heads and limbs. It wasn't until 8 that Squaresoft figured out how to make uniquely designed characters with realistic proportions, which was then deliberately ignored in 9, and brought back in 10.

    You conclude at 3:28 that because Quina has a comical character design the character works? I don't follow. By that standard anything with a comical character design automatically works as a comical character. Quina's jokes are one dimensional, weak and repetitive in the extreme, yet because her music and character design is lighthearted you declare that its now one of your favorite characters in the entire finnal fantasy series? I just don't get it.
    Lets go over the reasons your have put forward for why this is one of your favorite characters out of all the characters in the Final Fantasy series. 1. The Character design is comical. 2. Their theme song is comical. 3. They have very vague character motivation, and 4. They are very powerful in combat.
    I suppose there is no accounting for taste but I would have figured that in a story driven game series to make it into your list of favorite characters said character they would have at least some positive point concerning the story and being well written within that story. Can you point to a single joke this character makes that isn't just some variant of the statement "I like food." ? Apart from once claiming to not be a thief to some dwarves I cant think of a single one.
