    This is the only fid tutorial on TH-cam even four years later. Thank you for your time and efforts. I am learning tons from you. You dominate TH-cam when it comes to para cord.

    Tip for anyone having trouble, I had to pass my lighter across the end of the fid a few times just to warm it up. Otherwise the moment it touched the cord it cooled it before the threads even had a chance to bite.

    Excellent! Another fine video. I have been struggling trying to figure out how to do these things with scant guidance.
    I am glad those weren't your fingers sizzling on the hot paracord. I've done that! The water dish is a good idea, too.

    Your field of view is shallow enough that it you change your focus setting to manual and adjust it to focus then you'll probably be good for everything you do. Instead of having to constantly...essentially manually try to get it to focus in the automatic mode by holding your palm out, it will be focused and will stay there. It might not work...but it might! Thank you for taking the time to create edit and post your videos! Excellent work!

      Yeah, this video is pretty old and my camera and set up have changed a lot since then. I've also learned a lot more about shooting videos since. That doesn't mean I still focus the camera perfectly every time though! lol I'm still always looking to improve aspects of the videos. You're welcome and thanks for the comment!

    How do you remove it? Just "unscrew" the cordage from the fid? Doesn't it get gummed up from the melted plastic?

  • @LeeSavidge

    I bought some fids a year or so back and always had trouble with getting the cord into the fid. In the end, I found if you cut the cord at the end at an angle as per this video, and as it cools, roll it in your fingers to make it a better point. Then, when it is cooled, screw it in. Screwing in when molten, for some reason, never works for me.

    • @1mataleo1
      @1mataleo1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Lee Savidge thanks, man! I just tried your method and it definitely works better. It gets the paracord in there really tight too

    Won't the melted paradors clog the threads of the fid when cooled?

  • @deborahjohnson9236

    does residue from the melted paracord build up in the fid if so is there a way to clean it out?

    can you put para cord in un melted and melt it from outside. Like put flame on outside of fid.

    • @TheJordanAntibellum
      @TheJordanAntibellum 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rickey Suarez I don’t know if you figured it out yet, but no. It’s just going to make the fid hot and you want the whole bracelet inside the fid

    I appreciate this video. Now I have a dumb question. Once you're finished with whatever paracord project, how do you get the cord out of the fid and clean it so that it is ready for the next project?

    • @visualoddity
      @visualoddity 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm dumb. I'm guessing you just unscrew it to back it off. For some reason I was thinking it would adhere/attach itself to the inside of the fid. lol

    • @TheWeaversofEternity
      @TheWeaversofEternity  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's no such thing as a dumb question! But I'm glad you figured it out. :)

    If you have a drill or drill press and a metal file, you can make one. These are much shorter. Get an aluminum screw post, under $2 each. I also suggest getting longer machine screws so you don't crush the aluminum in your drill. I recommend Lowe's simply because they have more choices on length. Then just file it down to a point.

      Travis Holtzman Great tip Travis! I've seen tutorials on how to make them as well. The premade ones are great for those who don't have the tools or time to make a fid. But yes, fids are very cheap to make as well. Thanks for sharing!

      This looks like a hybrid between a marlin spike and a needle. This weld on methodology seems very suited to the synthetic cord medium. A 550 cord diameter version may be favorable though.

    My paracord is stuck inside the fid. I can't get it to come out at all. I have even used pliers to try and turn it the other way no good, then tried pulling and twisting no good. UGH I am frustrated. How can I get the cord out.

      GD gamer yes bud. You bought the fid for nano or micro cord. You can still try melting and screwing it in. Might still do the job.

    So there are no tips for smaller cord? You'd think they'd make them

    • @TheWeaversofEternity
      @TheWeaversofEternity  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are smaller sized fids to use on thinner cords for sure. At the time of making this video, which was a while ago, I wasn't aware of them. You can often buy the lacing needles in sets of 3.

      You just unscrew the fid to take the cord out as the end of the fid is threaded.

      +the cube freak Actually don't worry about melting the paracord before you screw the needle on. Just make sure there's a bit of a melted bit there and screw the fid onto the melted nub.

    This is NOT a fid, it is a lacing needle. A fid is basically a spacer that allows you to pass the cord through.
