- This week we take a look at some really cool Space Wolf models for Warhammer 40K. With the advent of Primaris we are gaining quite a lot in quality of model, but we are losing a little bit of spirit, and older Space Wolf models are a perfect example. These older models just had so much going for them, they are hands down some of the best space marines out there and we need to preserve this as much as we can. The small marine might be going away, but that just means we get the opportunity to pick up even more at an even better price! Let's take some of these guys and see if we can't help them out a bit.

What Space Marine Chapter do you feel stands out like Space Wolves do?
There's just something about Space Wolves, they got to me I think...Super fun minis though and I really had a good time just sitting back and painting them up, not every model feels like that!
Space wolves stand alone. In both being memed on and uniqueness.
I love my Primaris, I got into the actual hobby side of 40K at the end of 9th, but there is something so nostalgic about the older, more stylistic marines that just speaks to me, so I've jumped into 30K for my fix. That being said it seems they're starting to bleed the character back into some of the newer sculpts for 40K, like the new Sternguard Veterans. They have that older warrior monk vibe the Primaris initially tossed out in favor of tacticool for a while.
Grey Knights is my answer, btw. They desperately need new sculpts but I'm worried they'll lose some of their flavor.
The salamanders probably come closest to standing out like the space wolves, but no other chapter outside of the really small specialist ones (grey knights, custodies) are really as customised as the Legion of Fenris
I agree the newer primaris space Wolves lack that detailed touch. They just feel like any other chapter. But I feel like that short coming has been taken up by third party companies.

As a Wolves player, we all stockpile Wolf Guard Termie bits and the Wulfen Dreadnoughts.

Definitely agreed, the variety in bits you can get from literally everywhere else but GW is fantastic. It's just kind of a shame that they put that on their community instead of giving the people more variety and options.
Agreed, i think GW should do like they did with the black templar and give us primaris versions of the space wolf specific units. Like primaris bloodclaws that come with 15 per box like the old ones, or the new primaris jump packs as new primaris sky claws, heavy intercessors can be remade into primaris long fangs, etc etc

I started out painting model cars & planes with enamels in the 70's, so by the time I started painting minis with acrylics in the 80's it was EZ-mode.
Thanks! I just want people to know that it gets easier and to not give up, I did for a long time and regret it immensely.

A buddy of mine who is in the army gave me some second hand space wolves and boy were they caked in paint. It took almost three days to get all of the models cleaned. The box even came with some extra bits that were from kits made in the 90's. I even got my hands on some metal space wolf terminators. Despite the models being considered dorky by today's standards, I still think they are awesome.

The best part, that I forgot to mention, was that mixed in with the bits was a paper banner in good condition. An old school pewter banner bearer is also one of the models I cleaned up. I hope to get them painted sometime in the future.
I really do miss all the unique kit options from back then. We get more generic kits now and have the upgrade sprue, but i really miss when the kits had so much more character and different. Quality over quantity. Space wolves were one of the armies that first got my attention during 5th.

I have always been a spacewolves fan, way back when i even had the original leman russ metal mini with his wolves, wish i still had that model
proper primaris space wolves will come.... eventually.
until that day comes we have green stuff, the treasure trove that are the old bits and of course all the absolute legends that have supplied us with 3rd party space wolves bits (like the bases you used in this video)

I literally just glue the sprues and bits from my child hood toys on the bases for basing, that way the stuff is always with me

Most of the 40K products I've ever bought have been Orks, with Space Wolves as a lone exception, as they have some really great bits for kitbashing heroic barbarians. I still have a few bits left from a box of Grey Hunters I bought twenty years ago. :)
I used to add space wolfs (slightly modified) to my black templer army just to add some different model types to what would be a generic army.

Great video and rescue! Recently I've got tasked with commishion to assemble, base and paint 2k points of Space Wolves. Logan, Krom, bunch of wolves, lots of Blood Claws, sum terminators. Beautifull sculpts, tons of leftover bits but fuuuuuuuuu** me, that's a lot of details to paint and heck of a work as my first commishion :D Kinda makes me not want to do this hobby anymore... Though I motivate myself with thought, that I will use money from this commishion to get me an airbrush ^^

I completely agree! The new models lack so much creativity for the Blood Angels, Dark Angels and especially Space Wolves! We were spoiled earlier in the hobby with getting such detail and being open to converting models how we wanted them to look, instead multiple one pose models. Even with heavy conversion work, Primaris aren’t the same

That would be great, the Space Bear Kickstarter is literally only a few days from ending, and all the puppets war bits that are already out there, it's only a matter of time really :)
I like most of the work on these models. I'm not really a fan of the snow on the marines. it makes them look like statues rather than models that are moving. The armour would also likely produce heat, especially the backpack, which would melt any snow flakes and prevent it from building up.

Need to share this. I just had the most bizare find... what can you do if you don't have glue ? on metal miniature ....
you can soldered them !! Just found 2 High elves Dragon Princes with the body parts soldered.. The metal was melted at the junction point. Problem they are not aligned at all.
lol wow! I mean, glue is cheaper and easier but I guess you've gotta use what you've got on hand. Hopefully, you can get those separated without hurting the minis too bad! Thanks for sharing, that's wild!

Thanks! It's Citadel Snow Flock. Surprisingly good stuff, a little bit of pva and just sprinkle it down, it's really fine and makes for great snow :)

What do you use for air quality with your 3d printer? Its my main holdoff on printing more
For the most part, I'm not too worried about it. I print in a finished garage away from my house, so it stays separated from people, but the printer I mostly use has built-in fans and filters on it, and I run an air purifier in my space so it is constantly circulating and filtering everything. My purifier has LED indicators on it for air quality and it generally runs clean, so I feel fine with it. I have no real way of knowing other than that, but I'm not sure what else I could be doing to help, maybe a hood with a vent out the window, but that seems like overkill.
@eBayMiniatureRescues I use a garage as well so I should look into those air filters. There's also safe resin I've seen but I have no idea how safe that really is. I know that resin fumes aren't the worst thing as the main side effect of them seems to be you develop a sort of allergy to them, so I suppose worst comes to worst it'd be no more 3d printing. The dust is what I know is really dangerous. Thanks for your answer!
i love your videos but sometimes the high frequency sound on your vocal track can give me a bit of a headache. have you tried eqing the high frequencies down a little bit? love your work!
Casey, how often do you clean out your sonic cleaner. The bottom must get layered in crud.

Definitely not as often as I should. Even when I do clean it out I don't tend to "clean" the actual paint off the sides, the bottom does though. The liquid gets all sorts of colorful pretty quick with new models too so it looks pretty dirty lol. At least once a month I need to change it all out. So maybe 4 or 5 cycles worth all said and done. Usually with 5-10 models in there.

They look like my work from when I was a kid and just started. No idea what I was doing, didn't have anyone to teach me. Way before TH-cam tutorials but having fun still. Thinning paints? What's that? Why do all my Marines look like they are melting,!

Not sure what kits your buying but the ones I've picked up for Primaris Space Wolves are full of sculpted bits that you can put on yourself. Your marines can be an absolute mess of decoration if you want.
There are some that have all the stuff and I think that's great! I'm talking about actual sculpted pieces of the model. These little guys have sculpted legs and torsos that are specific to them, another chapter couldn't use them. We just don't see as much of that anymore is all. I mean, I like the size and quality of Primaris marines but they are meant to cover the entirety of "Space Marines" and for you to paint them and glue bits on for your chapter. It makes sense from a production side, make more boxes that work with everything, but it feels like we are losing personal identity with some of the chapters.
So you're mad that the bits are.... removable? I'm not trying to be an ass, I just genuinely don't understand. There are still lots of characters with sculpted in details and the rest are bits that you can attach any way you want. ¯\_(ツ)_/ ¯

I’m not mad so much as I just see there are less cool options than there used to be and that’s a bummer. I’m definitely glad that you can put bits onto a model, but that isn’t exactly the same as a pre sculpted part that was in mind when the model got sculpted. It’s all personal preference of course, I just like the look of the old models and wish the newer models still had that kind of character to them.
I just can't get over how derpy the first-born models are. Thank the Chaos Gods for Primaris.
There is a lovable derp to them, maybe that's just nostalgia talking though lol. I do like the size and quality of Primaris, definitely an upgrade, even if we get much less sculpted chapter-specific models.

Primaris are definitely significantly more bland than the older minis.
I would hate to be the person who poured their heart and soul into their miniature to find it on your channel saying it's the "worst". You don't know who did it, could be a kid in their first adventure into the hobby, or someone with disability. Either way they loved that miniature and probably thought they did a great job. Just because it doesn't meet your high standard. Why put them down?
I can tell you spent some time writing this, but please, watch the video before commenting something like this. I didn't say anything bad about these models. The point of this is to address how hard the original painter tried but may have lacked some knowledge, I even compared them to some of my first models, and so here we are with easy painting tips to try and help people on their way. Not putting anyone down, just trying to lift people up.
