  • This week I tackle a set of Space Marine Scouts, and paint them up in an Imperial Fist color scheme. I really like these old models, they really just don't make them like they used to!

In the lore, Scouts were the chapters aspirants on their way to becoming full blown Space Marines. The scouts in the Space Wolves were some of the older marines, though, which is why they can take different weapons and deepstrike

Space Wolves in 3rd Ed. were beasts: Rhino rush tactics; Land Raider Crusader laden with 14 Blood Claws led by a Wolf Priest hit like truck; & the Wolf Scouts with melta bombs deepstike turn 2 wrecked your enemies camping armour!

Not surprising considering this is one of two fan favourite chapters that only see the Codex Astartes as ass wiping supplies with outdated scribbles on it (Guilliman’s been working on it since he woke up).

Wolf scouts were full grown space marines, but cus their mentality didn’t fit into the pack mentality, they were took out of main line squads and had their lone Wolf tactics but to better use. Basically the small Spec. Ops. teams

It is funny that Scouts are considered "Elites" in the current (9e) codex, when they're supposed to be the exact opposite of elite.
There is a reason, though: limiting Scouts to an "elites" choice makes them less common than full marines, as they "should" be in the lore.
(Also, IIRC many Marine players were fielding entire armies of Scouts in prior editions, which wasn't how they were intended to be used!)

I play a space marine army a lot of the time. Ultra marines. I have two painted squads of scouts and an unopened box, with the plastic wrap still intact. When I was buying boxes back in the day, I often would get an extra and never touch it. I pretty much have a full unopened army in storage, for many of my armies.

In 5th edition Wolf scouts were still elites. You could attach a wolf guard as sergant to them. You could come from right, left and behind as a reserve. Put in a melter, a combi melter and a powerfist made them a bane for enemy tanks.

I got some modern scouts with Snipers and Camo Cloaks, I was given them as a sorta gift by my uncle when we showed him around our local Comic book store. It was shortly after that I found my love for orks so these guys got a partial Salamanders paint job and some volcanic bases. I'm willing to give them up to bolster your Imperial Fists if you so wish.

Blood angels scouts were really good. Infiltrate to 18in away from the enemy, black rage towards the enemy up to 6 inches so you could potentially charge on turn 1 and str 5 int 5 on the charge.
also those models were in use until the plastic scout came out in mid 2000s 4th - 5th edition

It's funny how the different, less distorted proportions of the metal scouts make it clearer just how much Primaris Phobos marines are a straight update of them, the same way Primaris Tacticus marines are an update of the classic tactical squad with a Mark IV helmet. The plastic scouts have weird hunched-over postures and giant heads and the sculpting of the cloth on their arms and legs makes it poofy, but on the metal scouts, with their smaller heads, straighter stances, and less emphasis on the cloth sleeves and pant legs, you can see the Infiltrators/Incursors/Reivers have the same boots, the same hip pouches, the same grenades and pouches and things hanging off their chests, and overall the same silhouette, just with the addition of the helmet, proper backpack, and the one enlarged shoulder pad. I never noticed that before watching this video, I guess because I'd never gotten a good look at metal scouts before. Heck, the Incursors even have the same cyclops visors. So, thanks for showing me something I'd never noticed before!

  • @SparksNZeros

I love vintage pewter models like this and it's wonderful to see them given some attention, ive never been fond of the 'hero rock' approach to counteract scale creep though as it feels like it detracts too much from the models, especially older ones which are often more of a blank canvas with more simplistic detailing. Ive always gone with just making vintage armies with modern paint schemes to make the models deliver as much as they're capable of whilst also looking cohesive with models they are contemporary with. I've a vintage metal eldar army spanning from 1989 to 1998 that does well in that regard although some of the plastic kits still stand out as huge compared to the pewter pieces of that time.

Great video! Love your techniques! Point of correction on 3rd Ed Space Wolves Scouts, the thing was, they could infiltrate, deep strike OR come in on your opponent’s board edge. Until it was FAQed into oblivion, they move was x6 scouts (they could only take squads of up to 6) with two plasma pistols, and a Wolf Guard leader in Terminator Armor with a Cyclone Missile Launcher. They show up on your opponent’s edge and back shot tanks, or force units to turn around to deal with them.

Here's a helpful hit for doing iris/pupils, use a toothpick. The point on a toothpick is usually fine enough to get a nice little dot for the iris/pupil. I usually go with just black as it can be painful to try and put the pupil right on a colored iris.

I just read the Marneus Calgar comic and (probably a lot know that anyway, but I'm new-ish to the warhammer lore) it seems the size is even lore conform, cause scouts are usually neophytes before their implants are all done and before their training is finished, so they become scouts to kinda get some combat experience "Not fully astartes, but not a regular human anymore".
Of course there's also the whole Primaris size thing going on.

My trick for the eyes, just do pupils (pretty sure everyone is like that) how I do it though is I take a Gundam Marker light grey fine point tip pen and just press it once. Specifically the GM02 pen. It doesn't bleed, it's just the right size for the majority of eyes on most models, DnD or Warhammer. And I've used it for every model and it works well. I personally think the grey works better than the black but if you want to try the black let me know what you think. (black is GM01 pen)

Back in the days I never played my Space Wolves Army without a Scout squad, showing up at the opponent´s table edge with meltaguns and a power fist ready for action :-D

I too like the glowing no eyes. I tried to paint real eyes once and ended up with Jeffrey.... the wood elf war dancer who looks like he fell out of one too many trees as a child

Yay, this is why I'm subscribed. That's a nice color scheme. Cold blue tones for the pants etc was a smart choice. Eyes turned out way better then expected

I made a 3D printed pineapple for someone the other day. Did the same burnt umber with yellow over it using my airbrush. Pineapple Space Marines! I build tank models besides figures. I use that panel liner on every single tank I build. Glad to see some cross over usage. Ninjon used some of the enamel washes on his latest video I use all the time to weather tanks models. And every tank gets pigment powder on them for weathering.

Got to agree, I hated painting eyes. Only suggestion I could have given would be using a little less of the white dot on the eye but then I like the idea since the blood angel scouts, especially flesh tearers would have that red glow around there eyes 👍

Love it! This set (I was collecting Dark Angels space marines) was my second or third set of citadel miniatures, seeing this brought back some wonderful memories. 🙂

I have a number of these guys, was thinking of an Imperial force, they came with a variety of weapons to accommodate most categories.

Discovered this channel in the course of looking at the new Horus Heresy sets having been out of the hobby for over 15 years. You are almost single handedly inspiring me to go dig out all of my early 90s to around to around 5th edition collection. Thinking I should look at some sales and trades to get into building an HH Imperial Fist's Legion Army. Especially, all the books, catalogs, NIB pewter stuff and old unassembled kits.

I was lucky to get a complete set of shotgun scouts from the 90's for 27 bucks. Painted them with a grin the whole time through :)

Just a question to an old post. I have many old metal minis that I would like to overhaul. The question is will it decrease the value if you cut the tab off the feet? This question has put this project on hold for many years.

It's funny, just painted those same models myself last week. Really love them. And you're right, they seem like hobbits compared to the new Primaris.

Hey dude, I just wanted to let you know that you inspired me to repaint all my old WH fantasy high and wood elves from the early 2000s. I had them in an alcohol bath for a few days and they came out pretty clean! Unfortunately some models are not in a good shape any more, so I will have to do some green stuff and kit bashing to make them work. Imrik's dragon was completely crushed, with only the metal bits in good shape... I think I will still use Imrik and put it on a horse and keep the dragon head and the other parts as spare parts for future projects.

The various versions of eye painting is something that drives me crazy.
Unless I have to do it, on most minis, I tend to go with the closed eyes look, using an additional tiny bit of a wash as a last step after highlighting the face.
Glowing eyes is far easier than getting "realistic" eyes to look correct, and they can be done relatively easily with two shades of the same basic color with a darker one that you paint the eye with and then a bright one to dot the largest portion with (Except for a red glow...which is where a pink actually works well). I've largely used Reaper paints for it with most and a few others. Normally, you want a more pastel color for the dot. For example, Reapers Gore Red with their Breast Cancer Awareness Pink, and their forest green with rot grub green...not sure of the actual colors, for that one because it's a barely legible scrawl of a handwritten name over the label that I got as a promo color). With Blue, I'd gone with a royal blue and then a cold off-white craft paint.
While it may be cool for a short time, under no circumstances use the daylight clear glow paints. A friend of mine gave me some of those a long while ago (He works event decor for places and it was post halloween that year), and it starts out transparent, but the pigments eventually burn active and stain which creates a nasty eye look in the end.
