My MOST EMBARRASSING eBay Warhammer Purchase!

  • I can't believe I got into this hobby almost 25 years ago. It seems like yesterday that I was picking up my first box of Eldar Guardians from a local hobby shop. Fast forward to nearly 25 years later and this week we will take a look at what is my absolute dumbest eBay Warhammer purchase to date, not that the models were bad, but man did I overpay! The auction was for a few squads of Eldar models from the late 90s and an Avatar of Khaine! I got into a crazy bidding war and just couldn't contain my emotion, I was pretty young at the time and didn't really think about the price if I'm being honest. In fact, I tried to justify it to my parents, saying these were special, and I got a good deal, which really didn't work, and they were a little upset. Of course looking back at it now and still owning the models just makes for a good story, but I felt bad about this purchase for quite a while, weird kid guilt, anyways...
We will be taking a look at the Avatar of Khaine today and seeing what can be done to bring it to a good place. I'm so excited to finally be done with this project and am very happy to share my results. I do hope you enjoy it as much as I do :)
This video was a fun one for me, lots of reminiscing about the good and bad of playing Warhammer when I was young. I eluded to quitting the hobby because of this model, and that's mostly the case. I was legitimately laughed at for this paint job by adult players back in the day, and some very not so nice things were said, so I told them to shove it and I quit buying models. It took me 20 years to come back to the hobby, and I am so glad that I did. I don't ever want to see that happen to anyone, and I will always do my best to encourage and lift up my fellow hobbyist'. I do feel like this hobby has gotten way better about things like that, although I still see room for improvement too. Either way, I hope we can make a positive impact on the hobby and have some fun together painting and playing wargames!

I had an original lead Space Marine dreadnaught that I repainted about 10 times while I was still doing the hobby. I kept changing chapters for my marine army and the dreadnaught was always the one that got repainted first. I wish I still had it and could go back and do it justice (how it looked in my head rather than how it looked after paint job number 10). Cheers for the video, really nice seeing you having the chance to go back and redo it.

Shout out to that tumbling Eldar at 3:30. I don't know if you bought it like this, or 12 year old Casey had the idea, but if it's the later, it's actually a pretty brilliant way of making an action pose that coveys the superhuman grace of the Eldar. He looks like he doing acrobating rolls while firing.

It took a lot of saving and scraping together money to get boxes of models and stuff. I think I was a little lucky in that my dad was already into model trains, so the shop was the same, the hobby was similar, the money...still, being young and trying to get into it was tough and not sustainable really. But here we are now right? :)

being 12 in the 1990 everything GW was affordable
40-60 unit plastic box sets for 30$ lead command groups were 5 minis for 10$
the sculpts weren't nearly as breathtaking as they are today but it certainly feels bad that they are out of the price range for young people today

Mate I was in the same boat as a kid, I was the only one who's family couldn't afford mini and that's totally fair enough on my parents part. My friends used to rub it in my face that I didn't have any minis. We entered our late teens and early 20s and 40k wasn't cool to them anymore so I ended with boxes and boxes of their vintage minis. Now we're in our 30s and I've got a few beautifully painted armies made up of their minis that they get envious over whenever they see them bwahahahaha

First, for those shoulder pad transfers, highly recommend Vallejo decal softener! A video by ThePrefect showed me that multiple coats, pressing it down and letting it dry in between will actually dissolve the transfer material and pretty much just leave the ink. Takes a little while to do multiple coats, but it really makes the transfers look painted with no extra painting!
Second, the orange shirt, purple mask and sunglasses with the Dremel, straight up vibing, awesome.
Third, awesome job on the model. Looks so satisfying to have done how you want all these years later!

I never even painted my Avatar of Kaine I got at a similar age in a huge eldar battleforce box. It's a cool model still. As a model builder, I have a inexpensive suggestion for others who may not have ultrasonic cleaners or anything like that.
'Easy Off' in the yellow can is good for stripping paint off of metal and plastic figures and models.
Just place the object into a resealable bag, spray the Easy Off until the object is fully coated. Let sit for an hour, sometimes less. Depending upon the age or thickness of the paint being removed.
After soaking, use a toothbrush to scrub off the old paint.
Then rinse it under warm water (mostly for your hands to be comfy), using the toothbrush to get all remaining paint and oven cleaning residue off.
Then dry. Air dry, Hair drier dry. Which ever. Both. 👍
Perhaps that is useful information nation for some of you. I've used it for years.
I know how it feels to be mocked and degraded to the point of leaving a hobby you love.
Especially being a female Sci-fi model builder, I got shit from parents and peers, as well as strangers.
"You can't build models, let alone Sci-fi. You're a *girl*! Girls can't do that stuff. Its only for boys and men!"
Yes, my parents said the same stuff.
I had my models destroyed by some of my step-fathers.
I left the hobby for about 10 years, then got back into it.
Felt proud of myself and my work.
Displayed it at my local hobby shop and got some compliments.
Aaannd, a few men complimenting the work, then after discovering that I made them, they quickly diminished it by saying my original ideas actually came from novels, and they tried to give the titles they read the designs in. After already complimenting the work as cool and original.
It hurt their masculinity that a female could create something cool.
I got a few more complaints from a few other male model builders around that time.
But, overall, starting around 2005ish I noticed more males were not being so sextet and childish about my builds.
Very helpful, and complimentary, without hiding it or changing their story. 😎
Times have changed for the better in some areas. Especially in hobby areas.
Great video. Thank you for sharing.
Be Excellent to each other and to yourself and Party on. 🤘🎸😎🥳🌈

Mine was always that it was smoke coming out of the funnel in the head, and it just psychically shaped its' self into looking like hair. You might want to think about getting the one from FW, it has very obvious hair. And, at only 100 bucks, its probably gonna be cheaper then the new plastic GW one coming out this year.

I have a question for you and maybe your peers. I just repainted the cowling on my Warlock Jet Bikes to reflect the colour I use for special units. In this case I changed from Dark Angels green to Midnight Blue. I used a blue grey undercoat and then painted the blue on top and it looks stunning. It is so deep that depending on the light it hints at purple or a deep blue that goes on for ever. I might have highlighted and shaded the job but I don't want to change this effect. And with Eldar you can get away with the nature of the equipment looking pristine because that is who they are. Question: Would you ever paint on a colour and not enhance (?) it because the finish is so good? Or do you believe there is no option but to layer it down?

I feel a lot of the sentiments of this video, 1998 was the first year I got into the hobby when a friends mum got me the space marine command box set. I have no clue what happened to it all but I'll have to hunt down that set and paint it again if only to for the nostalgia because compared to the new Primaris stuff it just doesn't compare. That said that box will always have a special set of memories for me.

Hey Casey! I'm working on one of these models myself right now, didn't think I'd see a new video about him! Quick question, have you tried any of the other panel liner colors by Tamiya? The browns are great, but I still haven't figured a good use for the grey. Any thoughts?

    • @eBayMiniatureRescues
      @eBayMiniatureRescues  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I haven't gotten my hands on the other Tamiya colors, been meaning too though! I've heard they are pretty great. Grey would be so good for doing dark colors, or if you want to make something look dusty. I've used grey enamels on the newer Black Coach model from GW, on the dark wood it really stands out and makes it look good. Otherwise it would work well for white armor that you didn't want to have a super strong black line, actually, Eldar Guardians are a perfect example, the newer one I showed in this video was all grey lined.

I'm really happy to see mini painters becoming open to products that are applicable to all hobbies involving plastic things covered in paint. Micro Sol and Micro Set for decals, panel liner, weathering pigments and effects. Be nice to see photo etch detailing make it's way into mod kits and sets. Good & cheap way to add intricate detail to small scale. Now I don't feel like a stupid old man or an out of touch weirdo because my solution to everything mini related isn't citadel. Scale model builders can learn how to paint diorama figures and learn about light, shadow and contrast from mini painters; mini painters can find better products and weathering techniques from scale model builders. Gundam people are still learning everything ಠ‿ಠ

      @eBayMiniatureRescues  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I just don't have a ton of chemicals around the house. My cabinets lock, but I still have kids that want to get into things. I don't think they would actually get into anything too harsh but better safe than sorry. Acetone for metal is definitely a better way to go, it melts the paint pretty quickly.

Done - yeah, as long as it took to read this, its done. It works instanly, and you just scrub with a brush. So easy, but you can also leave it in the jar for literal years!
