Great color Matt. The shine is fantastic. I never tried building the Challenger. I did at one time have the ARII 57 Chevy. This kit reminded me of an AMT kit.
Hey Matt. Looks great in that orange, trial and error are how we learn. As for your 40 degree weather, I'll take it. Saturday and Sunday we didn't get above 18 during the day and night time lows were -4 &-8 here in Northern Illinois. Come get you some of that brother!
There are a few tricks to using "craft" acrylic paints. Using a quality acrylic "thinner" is a must. You can make your own using 70% ipa, distilled water, and glycerin. I have used a lot of that type of paint and it comes out great using Createx reducer.
A bit of airbrush medium added to the craft paint and alcohol like you had and you would've been in business man. You should definitely give it another shot! The stuff I have is by Golden and is called 'Airbrush Transparent Extender'. It was cheap at Michael's. Used this with the Plaid paint for the first time myself and could not have been happier.
I use plastic spoons to test my paint when I used old model master paints for cars now I use MCW Lacquer since I dont like mixing their oils with all the extra things to make it dry hard and for my air craft and armor I use Tamiya
The couple of things I figured out with craft paint is thin with Windex! Windshield washer fluid and IPA like other people said dry way to fast! Get a Badger electric mixer to stur the paint it makes a big difference. Bumpy paint is particles in the bottle. I do 2 things the Badger in the bottle and a powerful mixer for mixing Test Tubes and a ball bearing or B B in the bottle. For clearing over the craft and other water based paint is high gloss floor polish. Always let the clear dry for at least 20min between coats it self levels and builds great. Yes it's not as strong as 2K but much easier and cheaper to use. If I were you I'd try Createx Paint. Really easy to use and lays down beautiful. They have hundreds of colors and additives for awesome effects and not expensive at all and it's made in USA in Connecticut. If you would like I'll give them your name. I'm friends with Chris who does all their demo's here on TH-cam. Check them out.
Like the orange I used to have a one-to-one 73 Challenger with a cream color call and just to make you feel good the chance here right now is like 12 for the windshield of 10 below
Hey Matt! Just want to give a shout out to Ron Coon Resin! For all the oval track race car builders out there. Plus Big Donkey Resin for all his stuff too! Hard to find the oval race car stuff that the racing community is looking for. Thanks Jim
Thanks for the small teaching lesson on mix ratio of paints Matt!! I am ALWAYS having issues with that part! Great color you chosen, and for the record, here in Minnesota the temperature will be dropping below 0 tonight with snow coming in. So ur weather is a heatwave compared to us!!...lol
I use Craft paint and I came up with my own thinner for it and it works really good. IPA is for removing the paint. it will thin it but it will also gum it up.
Hi mat I use craft acrylics on 90% of my kits I used to use washer fluid but it was too wet and took lots of coats to cover. What I found that works really well is just mix it 50.50ish with either pledge floor polish or as I found out recently that works absolutely brilliant is Vallejo paint thinners. Tried other acrylic thinners in the past with no luck. Also you can add a few drops of the Vallejo flow improver you just have to experiment with your mixes because acrylic needs to be a little bit thicker. Get some plastic spoons and have a play with it and use light coats I use a hair dryer on the first couple of coats then once they are down your next couple of coats will cover great. Also I use 2k clear and cellulose thiners you do end up mixing more than you need though so I paint a couple of bodies to cut down on waste. Again with this practice with mixing ratios because it is quite easy to add to mutch hardener then your clear will not harden don't ask how I know. Get it right and the end results are amazing and much cheaper. Ps if you use water or washer fluid and get the mixing and painting down to a fine art you still cannot apply decals because the paint will become soft. if you use pledge it acts like a binder and once dry you can decal over it and it won't soften. Saves mixing 2k clear to put a coat on for decals I haven't tried decals over the Vallejo mixed acrylic yet but I suspect it will be ok.
The paint came out nice Matt, my only attempt at craft paint wasn't great either, I couldn't even get a spray pattern to look right coming out of the airbrush, never even tried spraying it on the car. Looking forward to part 2!
Acrylics do have a learning curve but you can get good results.. i use them because i dont have the ability to always spray enamels cus of orders. But you have to buy good quality acrylics also....and no I don't suggest using alcohol:)
I know you go to Hobby Lobby and just wondering if you were ever tempted to try that"Createx" airbrush acrylics that are in the model isle ? They have some truly interesting colors. The only thing I don't like is the different additives you need to add to the paint. If any of your viewers had some experience with this paint It would be great to hear of they're results. I am working with 5312 Pearl Tangerine .
I love the staggered fitment wheel/tire combo in this kit. If I'm ever to build a replica of the "Dirty Mary & Crazy Larry" 69 Charger these would be the authentic wheel/tire to use.
It was very common back in the 80s to see cars with mismatched sizes and brands. There was even a 70 Challenger in my city that had the front lowered and the rear jacked up with M/T N50-15 in the back and stock G70s on chrome rims on the front. Looked wicked.
I thought the journey to work with craft paint was awesome. I would say don't give up on it. I think you just had too many variables at one time. Once you tested it on some scrap and saw it wasn't good, you could have mixed it with what you know and try again. I hope you still try to work with things new to you. It's a journey we all can experience. Thanks for sharing.
In your videos you talk about using an incubator to dry your paint. I was looking into it food dehydrator to do the same thing. Could you please show what you use? And maybe give a few pros & cons on each. Thanks in advance.
Could you possibly put the body on a actual 73 Challenger model car that way it’s more detailed? Just a thought love the videos they are very enjoyable to watch keep up the good work 👍
Nothing wrong with a curbside every once in a while ( sez me ), I just got done with a very complex build and wanted to cool down; but, yet, keep my hands busy
You don't learn anything, unless you experiment. Sure. If you had have asked some of us what we thought of craft paint as an exterior paint base. Most of us would have said "No. STOP!" But, there would always be that niggle in your head of "I wonder?" Now though. You know never to try craft paint again. lol All in all. Great job. The second finish came out killer.
Being a challenger owner I never cared for those 73 challenges grills some Car Guys call them frown face Challengers nice shine on that orange paint job Matthew 👍
I got one...they are kinda cool but they are kinda average in detail. The other set of wheels are the stock ralley wheels. Yet if you build it...it does look cool. After all...it is a Dodge Challenger.
Thank you Matthew for the mixing ratios. Now that I've seen you do it, I can understand. Only question I have is, what reducer you use. I bought mr hobby leveling thinner, because of what I heard. Keep up the good work.
@@modelcarvideos5829 oh ok thanks, but do you think polishing my paint will make it shiny, because I usually use a spray can and sometimes the clear coat either doesn’t bond with it or it makes no difference
That kit is supposed to be 24th scale so have you thought about using the chassis and interior from the Monogram kit? If so, I have a glue bomb built up you can have.
I'm doing the 69 dodge Daytona same colore. need the temp to warm up a little. FYI this kit it is a POS, AMT in a collectors tin do not get this kit unless you like doing major modifications just to make it straight stay away.
Personal opinion....it's not the paint. It's the painter. If you're a good painter it shouldn't matter what kind of paint is being used. I'm still not there , yet.
Nice !!! I just did a 72 roadrunner in Orange i used rust oleum
When I was building armor models in the late 1980s, I always thinned the Tamiya flats with isopropyl alcohol. Worked great.
Building models is a learning experience, it’s nice your not afraid to try new things.
👍🏻👍🏻
Looks cool so far.great work.
Thanks!
I've seen some really good paint jobs done in acrylics but it takes some learning
I've had to change paint and colors on a few builds so I've been there and done that too...

Awesome Paint Job! 🎨
MCW paints are so nice.

Nice paint job👍👌
Love that paint!!

Love that paint job outstanding

We made a drag strip with copper tape and a groove from a table saw and turned these into slot car drag racers.

That's great info David! I'll have to try that.
I like to use craft paint for anything that I want dull. Perfect for weathered builds.
That’s all I use craft paints for is weathering
If you use craft paint, thin it with the washer fluid, NOT the IPA. The alcohol dries way to fast and produces a rough finish.
Wont the blue of the washer fluid change the color of the craft paint?
It doesn't
@@modelcarvideos5829 Awesom,e I may have to try it. But I usely use very high quality acrylic paints.
@@Riverrockphotos I've only seen it change the color yellow makes it a little green but not any other

👍🏻

@@crustyoldoffroader7436 Until it has the consistency of milk. I'm the kinda guy that doesn't read the directions, so I usually burn some cookies. Ha
