Shadow Wrap Short Rows

  • In this video, I demonstrate the short row technique called "Shadow Wraps". This technique turns stitches into a "shadow" stitch as opposed to wrapping the stitch. "Twin" and "Triplet
    stitches are created before turning your work in short row shaping.
    This technique creates short row stitches with a bit more heft to them, making them great for use on your sock heels. No heel flap is used in this heel technique. It's great for sock beginners and also for adding a heel to an existing tube sock pattern that you might have laying around.
    This is a fairly long video but it will walk you through all the stages of the short row shaping as well as how to close up those stitches as you create the heel cup.
    This technique can replace basically any short row technique in your sock pattern . Try it out! I hope you all love it as much as I do.

    Hi there, I knitted a sock a few months ago, well saw your instruction which i knitted at present time, and came across your instruction with your heel wrapping method,I LOVE IT SO EASY and no spaces nice and easy, with much better result,than other methods. Now I will cut out the other heel, and now I will only use your method. If I cannot find the instructions for the heel inset , I will unravel the sock,and knit the whole sock, it is worth to do the whole sock over. Congratulation for your instruction!!! and thank you,Love&Light 12/17/2022!!!

      Hello Belia!
      I don’t think you’re crazy at all. I learned to knit through TH-cam so I totally understand seeing a certain video that just makes it all click for you. Thank you for your very sweet comment and I am thrilled that you were able to create your first sock. There’s no feeling like it. Best and happy knitting!

    Excellent tutorial clearly explaining the method. My only problem was that I'm doing heel and toe in contrasting colors. Following your introduction on where to return to the main color of the sock put my yarn in the wrong position. I had to cut the main color yarn to pick it up again. I should have picked it up before going across the last row of picking up the shadow wraps.

    This is the easiest short row technique I’ve tried. Thank you so much!! Very clear and detailed tutorial. Can this method just be substituted in for another (like German or W&T) short row in sock patterns or are there adjustments that have to be made?

  • @krisvanallen
    @krisvanallen 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    If using a contrast color, does this method make your working (or main yarn) on the opposite side of the heel? Meaning ends to weave in?

    This is a technique I would love to try. In your tutorial you speak of multiples of 6 but for my sock (very basic pair I am trying) I have 32 stitches for the heel flap. 32 is not a multiple of 6, can i do 11/10/11 or would 10 be to many stitches for the unworked stitches in the center of the heel. Thanks for the advice

    • @Whiletheyplay
      @Whiletheyplay  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! For a 32 st heel, I would suggest a 11/10/11 ratio. You could also do a 10/12/10 but that would give you a shorter heel cup and a wider heel bottom. I hope this helps and I would love to see your finished sock if you'd like to share later. 😉

    LOVE your tutorial. I am knitting toes up socks and it Will be my first Shadow wrapped hell. So where do I start my hell. At what lenght of my foot. Merci!

      Typically, I start the heel when my sock reaches 3” less than my overall foot length. For example, if my foot length is 10”, I start my heel when my sock measures 7”. Hope this helps!

    I notice this is on a toe up sock, would it be the same for cuff down?

  • @jenbell7041
    @jenbell7041 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is there a way to make this heel less deep? When I knit it too down it’s got too much at the back bottom of my heel. My stitch count was 32 so I did 10,12,10 Should I put more in the middle section or less?

    • @Whiletheyplay
      @Whiletheyplay  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jen!
      Yes, for a more shallow heel, I would work fewer short wraps and leave more stitches in the middle. So maybe try 9, 14, 9.
