i still use a 7 year old laptop that utilizes a geforce 940m. has 16gb ram and a 2.8ghz i7, while its not amazing compared to the stuff coming out today, it does everything i need it to and i got this laptop for free from a relative who no longer needed it. Its absolutely perfect for music production and it can handle lots of automation on tracks, complex sound design, and as many effects as i can throw on an instrument without it sounding bad lol. i dont play a lot of games, but its capable of running everything i have on steam at pretty decent framerates and it will easily handle older titles. i dont feel the need to upgrade even though this hardware is a bit outdated because its perfect for what i use it for, maybe if i ever get heavy into gaming or my DAWs recieve updates making it to where i can no longer run them with new resource intensive features, then i will upgrade, but i dont see the point in it currently and i dont think this video really gives this processor a fair chance bc for the average person it will do exactly what you want it to, especially paired with the right processor and ram and you really only need a better processor if you wanna do high end video editing or you're a true gamer who wants to play new graphically intense games that require A LOT of power.

i have a positivo bgh schoolmate 15 tv with a celeron [forgot the model] at 1.6ghz with boost to 2ghz. they gave us those at school but i was lucky to get that specific one because the previous model had an atom 1.4ghz (i think) and 2gb of ram, mine has 4. it wasn't bad; ran LoL at 20fps lowest settings (back in 2016), ran minecraft just fine, risk of rain 1, commander.exe (random "joke" game i found the devs page that doesn't exist anymore. had metal slug-like sprites is not a virus), used it to play osu for a while and was fine too. the heaviest game i tried to run on it was dirt rally and i think it managed 3fps on lowest settings, or maybe 5, i forgot.
when you finished high school the IT guy would get permission from the principal to unlock it so you could get it home and use it undefinetly (has a tpm chip with a licence that had to be renewed every few months) but i forgot about that when i finished school and is now locked. it can be unlocked with a bios flash but don't tell anybody lol

I've also upgraded the screen to a 1080p version (after the backlight on the original went out). Great video. Can confirm that your FPS results are accurate. I also upgraded the stock 1TB HDD to a 512GB Samsung EVO SSD. As an everyday computer, it is fantastic. Has done everything I've thrown at it, including some light video editing.
    Great video!

Thanks for the video, I just recently picked up a laptop with a 740m for around 130 Euros. Not too bad for the performance which seems to be not too far behind your 940. For casual and e sports games it still holds up well, better than I actually expected giving the poor specs. You should however limit yourself to 720p.
What's also helpful is a small overclock, can be done in MSI Afterburner and will give you about 5-20% better performance depending on the game and chip you have.

My old, limping along laptop is a woeful i5 core duo with the 940mx. I've squeezed a surprising amount of performance out of it after repasting everything. I use linux mint, and hover around 40-50 fps in Minecraft 1.7.10 with about 40 mods and a view distance of 12, though it slows down if you are loading too many chunks. In vanilla + optifine I could run around 35-40 fps at a stupid view distance of 32, though I would pause and let chunks load in for a sec. I can hold 60 fps in most older games at medium graphics. I even got stable defusion working on the 2gb of vram, but it took 5-10 minutes for a 512x512 image and would crash making anything bigger. I also had to downgrade the Nvidia drivers to 470 in order to utilize the cuda cores, since apparently they disable them on more recent drivers. Overall its good enough for light usage, but looking forward to a new laptop or build in the next year; I'm dying for some next gen speed.

About Gta iv and its optimization. There's a mod that fixes it, name is Dxvk. What it does is swap the api to Vulkan. In the process fixing stutters and performance instability. Makes the game very playable.

Next time you try GTA IV try it with the DXVK & fusionfix mods! it completely fixes the stutter, and increases fps. it makes the game actually enjoyable to play.

I have an Acer with 940M (4GB) + i5 6200u, 16GB RAM, and Full HD TN. Bought for 800€ in December 2015. I still play Minecraft on it, even though I have a 2nd laptop with MX250 ( smaller screen). And in general, it would still be a nice laptop for office use if:
    - the audio card on the motherboard was not failing
    - the USB ports were not worn out
    - the fan did not have a worn out bearing, making it vibrate
    - the screen did not have scratches, pressure marks, and terrible viewing angles

I had a DELL Latitude 3470 with that GPU and an i7-6500U. The 940M was the default GPU choice bundled in most corporate laptops from the likes of HP, DELL and Lenovo, through 2016/2017, before being swapped by the MX150 later on. I was able to play and complete the Spyro Reignited Trilogy on that CPU + GPU combo, but at 720p at the Lowest settings and with framerate locked at 30FPS. 20-25FPS was the result.

I'd love to see a video on the gtx 950m, it being the last GTX card at the bottom of the range before Pascal, when mobile GPUs saw a huge jump in performance relative to desktop GPUs

I have a laptop with this GPU, its definitely underpowered but it makes more sense to look at it more as a laptop that can do light gaming rather than as a budget gaming laptop. I have used it to play older games like Alien Isolation, Rome 2, and mass effect 3. For those it is perfectly adequate assuming you keep your expectations in check. I bought mine for $500 in 2016 for school, and it made sense to get this over the similarly priced ultra books that had no discrete graphics at all.

I used to have one of these laptops as my main machine. It was an x556u with the 6200u, gt 940mx 2 gb ddr3 and 8gb soldered ddr4 and 128gb ssd. It was a good entry into gaming for me as it was my first laptop that was my own. It played quite well with games like tf2, minecraft and Lol. Even fortnite ran half decently back then. It sounded like an quiet jet engine and was like a toaster in the 80-90 degrees sustained load. The main issues were the dd3 used in the 940mx rather than gddr5 and also the 1080p screen which meant that i couldn't play anything more demanding at native res. It was also really nice for the few first months but then the crappy plastic case started to show scratches on the lid and palmrest due to being completley made out of plastic and being used as my school machine and everyday gaming machine for 2 years or so. As after 2 years of usage it looked and still looks like crap, the paint is coming off everywhere, hinge cover snapped off, even the w key is slightly melted (yeah like literally melted) and esc is missing.

I used to play a lot of League of Legends and Overwatch with this. It even ran Rise of the Tomb Raider and Sniper Elite 4 really well (but with very low settings and resolution). My laptop was the model with 4K native resolution so that's a pretty sweet bonus by itself. And yes, some indie games can run run at 4K with this GPU.

Funny you upload this, I have an HP Envy M7 that has this same GPU with the i7-6500u and a 1080p screen. Have not tried to play any games on it since HP’s software loves to lock the FPS to 30 then bump it to 60 and go back and forth and back and forth causing all kinds of issues in games. It’s not hardware related throttling, but software. One of these days I’ll be lazy enough to format and reinstall, then try again. Cant imagine the performance will be much better with the i7 than an i5 but it could be interesting, given the 1080p screen

I have an older asus laptop that's been just a loyal unit. 4720hq i7, upgraded ram to 12gb, threw a 500gb ssd instead of the 5400rpm harddrive, and came with a 950m(ddr3 version 😭) but honestly I've always known her limits and I haven't been disappointed. Good machine

Had one Aspire E5-573G-553C and "upgraded" it with adding 8GB RAM with 240GB SSD, ofcourse replaced HDD in optibay . Bought in 2016 and owned till end of 2020; Sold it cause old version onboard HDMI can't handle 3440x1440(100Hz). To be honest, I was satisfied with the performance, taking into account the fact that I was bought for the WoW game(daily/weekly quests/5 ppl. dungeons). I think the main drawback is GDDR3 with 64bit bus, there was a feeling that dedicatedGPU could do more.

Still rocking a i5 7200U 940mx laptop. TW3 runs at stable 30+ FPS on medium to high graphics (the original, not the "updated" version). I even beat up Elden Ring on ~30 FPS with it.
Amazing graphic card for its age and price range IMO.

Hii!! Love your videos mate!. Could you please cover the geforce 920m next? It was a really common cheap laptop graphics chip but can still run fallout 4, fortnite, assasins creed at 768p low settings. Thank you chap!

I have a 25W MX250 (4GB GDDR5) in my HP Envy business laptop/tablet, it's the absolute minimum to play modern games. It is about twice as fast as the 940M.
Games like Overwatch or GTA 5 run fine at native 1080 resolution (100%), intense games like Battlefield 5 provide only stable 60 fps at 720p.
Fortunately, I run most of the time games like Rimworld on it which run perfectly fine on the iGPU of the i7-10510U.

Processors with the letter "U" at the end of the their description will adversely impact the performance of your game. Here's a fact: I have a Intel i7 4700mq (8 CPUs) laptop with a nvidia gt755m graphics (2013 model), and I am able to play some very demanding games from 2018, upwards eg, forza horizon 4, and battlefield 5 at a solid 30-40 fps and a steady 60 fps for fifa 20.

As a person that still daily drives this exact laptop, It is 5 year old entry level pc. At that time I played all modern games of that era at high settings 45 fps 720p of course. Its just that huge leap in technology and game graphics that killed this card. And believe me the main problem is not the gpu but cpu. That 2 core i5 is struggling when you open a single app. I still do all of my jobs on this boy and for the games that It can't run, I use geforce now. And some of your benchmarks seems like suffering from something. I played GTA5 in all high settings and textures set to very high and I get the same fps as yours. For cs:go I don't drop above 120 fps all times. And best thing about this computer is the display. It can be overclocked up to 95Hz without hassle. I was planning to change my laptop, but thanks to shortages, high prices etc etc It seems like I'll be stuck with this laptop for one or two more years.

You can launch csgo with msi afterburner layout.
You can go to RTSS and add a profile for csgo executable with enabling stealth mode and set launch options on steam with this command:
    "-allow_third_party_software"
    It works for me.

As a “Proud” owner of a laptop with a GeForce 940MX, I can say that the X variant does perform noticeably better. You can also expect up to 10 FPS gains in some titles, atleast with the gddr5 version

witrh Odyssey coming out for Elite, I'd love to see some benchmarks on some of these mobile GPUs also being inclusive of that game as well as on some of the lower-end GPUs to show how that particular game runs. A lot of people are going to want to probably give the new expansion a try and go and buy something silly not realizing it won't run.

Bro, I really love your videos but please, increase the recording volume of your microphone. The volume is too low compared to the average volume of other videos across youtube. Or at least speak louder. Other than that, great job!
