You can just feel the anxiety of Speed desperately WANTING to be right when Rex removes his hood, and the incredible let down when he sees a different face than he anticipated. (Made all the more poignant when you know the plot twist shown later).
“It doesn’t matter if racing ever changes. What matters is if we let racing change us. Every one of us has to find a reason to do this. You don’t climb into a T180 to be a driver. You do it because you’re driven.” Every time Racer X gives that speech, my heart sheds a tear. The emotion is his voice is so palpable. Plus, the line really fits well with the theme of fighting for what one believes in, which is a key component of the film.
That scream at the beginning you can feel the pain and anger in him for wasting his time risking his life almost dying in a dangerous race that "killed" his brother trying to achieve something to save his family from doom
I agree, I think that was something missing from the new Batman movie was he wasn’t charismatic or interesting at all as Bruce Wayne. The dark knight did a perfect job making the characters feel real and had you invested
Always loved this twist in the movie but at the same time, I wish Rex would just tell his family the truth. They all miss him and his absence has damaged their family. Even if he has a job to do, he should still let his family know he's ok.
Netherwolf6100 the idea was for this to turn into a Trilogy but due to the poor box office returns we never got it. I feel the sequels would dive deeper into Racer X’s choice and the struggle it bares upon his life.
Something that's super impressive is both speed and rex still have perfect control on the Thunderhead Track, despite both their cars not being meant for it. Thunderhead is a T180 track, meaning cars with rocket boosters on the rear and rear wheels that turn. Their cars here dont have either. The entire track is made of slippery forged steel, so they barely have grip on it either. It shows just how truly exceptional they are at not just driving, but truly controling their cars that they can drive in this completely incompatible track.
if we go by Speed flashback during the opening scene, the two brothers spend their times on Mach 4 on Thunderhead after school really shows their dedication and hone their skill that even driving a traditional wheelbase on Thunderhead look like sunday stroll.
thunderhead doesnt have many loops, crazy jumps or extremely steep climbing corners like the other T-180 meant tracks we saw in the movie, i think it only has one straightforward jump, but if the car has a strong enough suspension and can reach the required speed to make the jumps, all youre missing is the skill to excentially drive on ice due to the low grip on the track. and hey, ayrton senna could drift an F1 car in the hard rain, so imagine speed might be an even more legendary driver than senna.
At 2:30, you can see Racer X's facial reaction to Speed's disdain for making the same mistakes that Rex did which must have felt like such a blow to him. His own brother feeling like his death was wasted. This movie sorely needed a sequel to resolve this. The family was so tore up over his death that there should have been closure.
The acting on his behalf just makes rewatching after the final plot twist be much more impactful. X can be shown as tough in physical and be skilled at driving, but he just couldn’t manage to hide his own shock at his little brother’s disdain at what Rex “died” to achieve. On a deeper level, he most likely expected Speed to understand why his legacy was important, yet he got a totally different outcome.
And even more depressing is the scene that came afterwards. When Speed’s father told Speed that he regrets telling Rex that he won’t welcome him again, and that he values his work more than his son. Rex “died” with that cross on his back, the cross that his family won’t mourn his actions for trying to do the right thing, and that his only hope was that Speed would be able to acknowledge his legacy on some level, but nothing came to his end. Just makes him an insanely tragic character which I hoped would have received a better ending.
Personally, I don't think this movie needs a sequel at all. The fact that X has to live with his mistakes is tragic, but kind of beautiful in a way. In regards to closure, I think the family got that by watching Speed win the Casa Cristo where Rex died, as well as allowing Pops a second chance when it came to letting Speed go where he tried to clip Rex's wings. Spritle never even met his older brother and the rest of the Racer family seems to be at peace now with the loss of their son. Is it a sad fate for a good man? Yes. But... I kind of appreciate that.
Chancy Cat well comic books are very unrealistic when compared to what of most likely happened irl, cuz then the acting would’ve seemed fake and Cartoonish
I'll substitute racing with everything that is going in this world, Politics, Sports, Academics, Video Games, etc. " It doesn't matter if these things never change, what matters, is if we let these things change us" I just can't believe how true that quote is, it really made me emotional.

Keeping away all those child jokes and the silly animation, this movie is a master piece. The first time i hear this quote was the moment when I decide to keep being myself no matter what until my death. And the Grand Finale, the truth about who is Racer X, a man that lives a life of pain and suffer for protect his family and make a change in the Racing World and the perseverance that he has to keep his secret, the moment he decides to never come back home was his last time. One of the bests Underrated Characters in the history. Rex Racer.

3:02 Right at that moment, Rex wanted to cry, but he held back. He chose to leave because he knew that if he stayed longer he would not be strong enough to keep the secret of his true identity.
My favorite parts are when X genuinely smiles when he says “I’m sure your brother would be proud of you” and when he looks down at the end with excitement knowing his brother has what it takes and will figure it out
Spritle: What you doing? Speed: What's it look like? Spritle: Where are you going? Speed: I don't know. I just got to get away from here. Young Speed: "Can i come with you, Rex?" Speed: What? Spritle: Can we come with you? Speed: No. Spritle: Why not? (Zips bag) Speed: You'll understand when it's your turn.
“It doesn’t matter if racing never changes, what matters, is if we let racing change us. Everyone has to find a reason to do this, you don’t climb into a t180 to be a driver. You do it because your driven.”................. “I’m sorry that’s for you to figure out, and I just hope when you do. That I’m there to see it.” These lines give me the chills every time they have so much meaning to them
"I'm Sorry" "Don't be, I'm sure if he was he here he'd be immensely proud of you" That line hit me, cause I have a younger brother too and some of the stuff he dose, I’m so proud of him, even if he doesn’t know it
Watch the movie Emperor with Matthew Fox as General Bonner Fellers he performed the role great! Fox performed both roles Racer X and General Fellers perfectly!
You know, when I saw this scene in the context that x was lying, it hit me really hard cuz that moment he said “I just hope that when you do...that I’m there to see it 🙂” it made me realize that his brother really was proud of him, and when the detective said “you think you made a mistake not telling them what happened” I legit fucking called it and I loved it
One of my favorite lines in the movie, is when Rex is watching Speed and the woman says something like, "he's going to be very good", Rex sighs and says..."No, he going to be the best." I can hear and feel the conflict that Rex is feeling. Proud of course but knows what that life comes with and what Speed is in store for...because he is living proof of the result.
You know what i like about this scene even though he doesn’t know it speed’s been driving by his brother side for years and he’s always had his back like brothers
I really like how X’s breath is a little shaky while he’s trying to console Speed, really makes it believable that he’s struggling with lying to his little brother’s face that he’s actually dead.
My favorite part is how Rex decides to drop the tough guy act and act like Speed's older brother once again. He just bares his soul to Speed without a second thought.
Damn in this scene speed hella knew that was his brother . If you watch the whole movie and go back to this scene it's like it's always been there . What a great piece can't wait to look into it some more
Speed: Yeah but, what happened to your face? Racer X: oh well, the studio called and they didn't want to be copyrighted by Fate and the Furious so I changed my face. Speed: Wha? Racer X: Nothing
You can see in rexs eyes right after he take off his max, and speed says “you’re not Rex” that he’s hurting, he hates that he can’t tell speed he’s Rex.
If the music of this scene sounds so familiar to a LOST tv episode (who was starred by Matthew Fox) is because Michael Giacchino was the composer of Speed Racer and LOST soundtracks
This is one of the best scenes in the movie imo. It allows us to see how much Rex still cared about His family and How far He was willing to go to protect them and help His little brother succeed. When He heard what Royalton was doing to His family, He went back to their home with the CIB to help do something about it, even if it meant Him actually dying this time in a rally race. He definitely knew Pops wouldn't allow Speed to go but He went to get and help Speed because He knew how much Speed cared about His family and wanted to protect His family from Royalton. Rex also knew that even if Pops didn’t allow Speed that Speed would still come anyways. Finally, his speech here shows how proud He was of what His little brother chose to do. He was proud that Speed chose to protect His family, even if it did seem like winning the Rally Race was pointless because of how it turned out. Rex wanted to let Speed know that it wasn't pointless and that He didn’t make the same mistakes. He wanted His brother to feel proud and happy for not only winning the race but sticking to His beliefs and doing what He can to help His family even if it meant possibly ruining His relationship with Pops. Most of all though, He wanted His brother to succeed. Rex didn’t want to see Speed give up because He knew how good Speed is/was. He knew that Speed could achieve what He couldn't. He knew that if Speed kept on going that He would change the racing world. And He wanted to see Speed succeed at it more than anyone else.
I never noticed when I was a kid that Shooting Star's engine sound is the same as the Ford Saleen Mustang (Barricade) from the first Transformers movie.
It was always a really cunning and underrated plot device to put the theory that Racer X is Rex right out in front at the start, and show Speed and Trixie making the obvious conclusion rather than remain ignorant due to the demands of the plot. And then, use the cliche twist to unveil a bigger twist, that X is not, in fact, Rex. Only to place this swerve back within the original framework at the end when the audience is allowed to see X is really Rex after all.
This was the part in the movie that it went from flashy cheese to a real homage to the show. The moment it unintentionally elevated itself. The moment it became one of my favorites. I only hope to write something so unexpectedly well one day.
He would be an incredible Batman and Bruce Wayne. Mabey not in a live action movie but mabey in a TV series like Smallville but he has fully become Batman. For some reason his voice hits hard, and I think if he played Batman he would try to save and help the villans like he did in the Animated Series.
I always loved this scene cause it addressed a potental plot flaw/hole I'm sure all of us knew about watching the cartoon. One slip of the mask and Rex's secret is blown, and yes during the Casta Cristo Ninja fight X still does the hammy makeshift mask moment that those of us in the know expected, but this, seeing X's face and it NOT being Rex's face was like wating to hit a hole and finding it paved over. Plus the actors for Rex and X look enough alike that it's not unbeleivible one was the other.
This was Peak Matthew Fox "Lost"-esque acting. God the first 3 seasons of that show were amazing. I wish I was back doing my undergrad waiting for a new episode every week.
i still wish there was a sequel where he reveals he is Rex and Royalton takes his money and bails himself somehow, with Cannonball Taylor coming back dangerous for personal reasons
Bro, I just noticed the part when Speed is driving next to Racer X is a parallel to the scene at the start of the film when he was racing his brother's ghost. Some parts look really simmilar. For example: Speed slows down at the finish line (just that this time he did it to bump into him, not to let him win). What makes this even better is that at the end of this race, Racer X fools Speed by making him think that he died in a crash just like he did when he was Rex. This is just *chef's kiss*
This movie was rank number 10 on Watchmojo's channel for being one of the worst live action movies based off of anime, and after watching this scene I have to ask. HOW?!!
Based on what I’ve seen on Watchmojo, they are wrong on just about everything, to the point of thinking that Jethro Tull was one of The Beverly Hillbillies. Critics tend to have 2 critical flaws in how they view films: 1) They think they are removed from the general audience (they’re not, they are part of it, the only thing separating them from the crowd is their writing abilities), 2) They tend towards groupthink and trend-hopping with their own little clique. This is why people gravitated towards Siskel and Ebert, for that rare instance where critics would actually disagree with each other.
“You don’t climb into a T-180 to drive, you do it because you are driven.” Is the most profound statement in this whole movie. It’s basically saying that people don’t do great things because they have to or were asked. They do those great things because they were drawn to it, because they want to
I dont know why people hate on this movie so much. Its got some incredible acting, and there are some incredibly deep meaningful scenes and tones. I loved this movie as a kid, and I love this movie as an adult.
GOD! This movie is underrated as all hell. I loved it back when it first came out because of my earliest memories of watching the original anime late at night.
the anger, the frustration, and the utter anguish over his actions not amounting to anything to fight back against Royalton from hurting Speed and his family.
For years while in the mach 4 after the incident the moment that racer x survived the crash while training on his own to be a racer in his own right as he became speed racer's aid to take on jack cannonball taylor.
No one will ever convince me that the actor for racer x wouldn’t have made the perfect Batman/Bruce Wayne

You know what i like about this scene even though he doesn’t know it speed’s been driving by his brother side for years and he’s always had his back like brothers
I still cry every time I watch it
Me too
I'm so pissed I didn't grow up with this movie. Now that I have seen it, it's already one of my favorite movies ever made.
This movie was way ahead of its time
Especially when it was easier for then to find visuals that translate into pure cinema!
Such a good film. Ahead of its time. I wanted Racer X to reveal himself so badly, I feel like they thought they were gonna do a sequel.
I really wish they did hopefully they can try to revive it now since more ppl appreciate the film
@@Sikeurmahi345 Spritle would have to be recast though, he's well grown up at this point heheh.
That’s why I haven’t seen this clip in years until today!
@@LeaveTheMark_YTthey wouldn’t have to. the sequel could just take place years later
thank you for posting this. didn't watch the cartoon as a kid, but I do like Mathew Fox's acting.

Damn in this scene speed hella knew that was his brother . If you watch the whole movie and go back to this scene it's like it's always been there . What a great piece can't wait to look into it some more
Such an underrated movie.
SPEED:
Why Don't You Just
Tell Me The Truth
You're Rex Aren't You
RACER X:
You Mean
You're Brother
Speed: Yeah but, what happened to your face?
Racer X: oh well, the studio called and they didn't want to be copyrighted by Fate and the Furious so I changed my face.
Speed: Wha?
Racer X: Nothing
@Matthew Concepcion don't worry I don't either
This movie was so ahead of it’s time idc what anybody says the colors and acting were always fye super clean visuals especially in 2008 wyf
Amen! Especially that was a time not so long ago when all that can easily translate into a good movie.
You can see in rexs eyes right after he take off his max, and speed says “you’re not Rex” that he’s hurting, he hates that he can’t tell speed he’s Rex.
Literally one of the most underrated scenes of cinema
0:14 When You Step On Lego Barefooted
Unbeknownst to Speed, Racer X was his long lost brother Rex Racer who ran away from home long ago
I never noticed when I was a kid that Shooting Star's engine sound is the same as the Ford Saleen Mustang (Barricade) from the first Transformers movie.
Be careful, kid.
Black Bolt can destroy you with just one whisper from his mouth
It was always a really cunning and underrated plot device to put the theory that Racer X is Rex right out in front at the start, and show Speed and Trixie making the obvious conclusion rather than remain ignorant due to the demands of the plot.
And then, use the cliche twist to unveil a bigger twist, that X is not, in fact, Rex. Only to place this swerve back within the original framework at the end when the audience is allowed to see X is really Rex after all.
Not to mention that in the original TV show, it's stated that Racer X is actually Speed's brother.
Movie was ahead of its time fr
0:41 "Unknown to Speed, this is his older brother Rex, who ran away from home year ago, and is now known as "Racer X"!
I actually know Racer X was Rex cause of The Next Generation tv show and mostly the tv show.
Cubsflims TheBandit025 and they also reveal it at the end XD
I mean all speed racer fans knows this... it was even told and shown in the old anime
@@Tachyonpng they basically told you in every episode too
@@ChargeJN Every the episode the character was featured in anyway.
Dude anyone who’s a real fan should know that
This was the part in the movie that it went from flashy cheese to a real homage to the show.
The moment it unintentionally elevated itself.
The moment it became one of my favorites.
I only hope to write something so unexpectedly well one day.
Apart from Christian Bale - Matthew Fox would make an amazing batman
He would be an incredible Batman and Bruce Wayne. Mabey not in a live action movie but mabey in a TV series like Smallville but he has fully become Batman. For some reason his voice hits hard, and I think if he played Batman he would try to save and help the villans like he did in the Animated Series.
Maybe he would been amazing as daredevil
The casting in this movie is really spot on, one the best imo. Really show that the showrunner really cares and love the source material.
That last part when he hit the breaks. Awesome
This movie was awesome
0:14 When you fail the exam or wake up late always.
I realize now how much I missed out on how emotional this scene is.
He would have been perfect for a prime aged Batman. Dammit Hollywood
I swear Rex and Speed sound a lot like their anime counterparts
i still wish there was a sequel where he reveals he is Rex and Royalton takes his money and bails himself somehow, with Cannonball Taylor coming back dangerous for personal reasons
The fact that the dudes who made the Matrix wrote this always blew my mind
This is unironically one of the best scenes of all time
Racer X looks exactly like Speed
This needs a reboot!!
“You don’t climb into a T-180 to drive, you do it because you are driven.” Is the most profound statement in this whole movie. It’s basically saying that people don’t do great things because they have to or were asked. They do those great things because they were drawn to it, because they want to
One of the most underrated movies
I dont know why people hate on this movie so much. Its got some incredible acting, and there are some incredibly deep meaningful scenes and tones.
I loved this movie as a kid, and I love this movie as an adult.
Because it's the trendy thing to do
@@HunterMagunter Unfortunately true.
One of the most unappreciated movies ever.
this scene alone has rent free in my brain since 2008.. and it keeps coming back when im at the shower..
GOD! This movie is underrated as all hell. I loved it back when it first came out because of my earliest memories of watching the original anime late at night.
I can really feel the anger in his scream
the anger, the frustration, and the utter anguish over his actions not amounting to anything to fight back against Royalton from hurting Speed and his family.
That roar of rage...Speed was PISSED.
For years while in the mach 4 after the incident the moment that racer x survived the crash while training on his own to be a racer in his own right as he became speed racer's aid to take on jack cannonball taylor.
This movie deserved a sequel. One of my favourite movies of all time.
He looks like Harvey Dent
Yeah, he does look like the actor in the Dark Knight.
So underrated movie
