What I’ve always loved about Amy is that she can sing a song a thousand times, yet never do it the same way twice.. Inflections change, timing gets altered for effect, strength and wistfulness in tone sometimes are exchanged according to mood. When she delivers, you get every piece of her heart in a song because she IS/was her music.
@@homeskillet7423 It's not boredom... she didn't study music, she was a natural so she could or even had to improvise within the boundaries of her compositions. Just like Kurt Cobain, Jimmy Hendrix and countless others, she didn't write the music down, only the lyrics, that's all she really needed to remember, the rest came as she performed.
I think this is my favourite recording of her singing this song. No screaming audience screaming stuff at her. It’s just her and the guitarist and she somehow seems just extra open, vunerable and raw. It’s so beautiful, honest and moving. What a talent, what a soul! It’s so rare in the 'music business’ where the truth is it’s all about an image and the ‘look at me’ money making machine and it is not about talent or soul. This performance brings me to tears. She was the real thing. So rare.

I think the magic is how she makes it look effortless while putting 100% of her heart into it. She was so real that it just bursted out of her. It’s so tragic when people like Amy are taken so young. It’s amazing that decades later the music has stood so strong against the test of time and probably another few decades from now someone will be watching back on this video and feeling the same way. I remember listening to her since she was alive and all these years later it’s an odd feeling to think that she was a real person that existed. I can’t put this feeling into words except to say it’s feels as if she was too real for this world. She had so much grace in living even with pain being able to take raw emotion and turn it into something so potent it still pulls my heart strings so deeply. I’m sure anyone who knows what love is can feel her music & probably understands exactly what she’s talking about though it’s a feeling that isn’t so easy to speak in plain language or to simply write on a keyboard. It’s something that bellowed from so deep within her that it speaks volumes upon volumes more than just the words themselves. She was a truly amazing beautiful artist and singer. I will always remember her fondly.
The true ability of a singer is exposed in this kind of situation where you just have a guitar for the basic support. This modified version brings Amy's talent out to the fore... impeccable voice control and all... we lost her too soon!
She may have regretted getting famous but she wanted to be a popular singer since pretty early on. Read her essay/application to Sylvia Young Theater School. She wrote it when she was 13 I believe.
That is a persona many famous people put on... but they keep doing things to make themselves famous. People who actually don't want to be famous aren't famous. Kurt Cobain is another one like that. It's just an image thing.
Hot Dogs yes it *can* be an image thing, but that is so far from the case for Amy or Kurt. You’re projecting your own beliefs and desires onto these people. Kurt and Amy sang and made music. Because it’s what they loved. Of course they may (or may not) have dreamed of success, but it’s very clear that whether they dreamed of it or not, they wanted nothing to do with it once experiencing it. And if that’s not the case, that must be why they were both so happy...right?
Kurt Kobain was like that. Just a scene and venue musician who wanted to write great music and who had "found god" in one narcotic or another. Amy was just very ghetto, and morose/depressive/ and always on some dope or another, finishing it off with crack cocaine.
No one gives love to the guitar player... but I really love the way that dude plays. I know he's not exactly pulling off some complex stuff, but he compliments the piece nicely. What an honor it must be to play with a singer like that...
I just started listening to her a few days ago. The first video I ever saw of her was when she was high on stage and couldn't perform right. I'm 16, and I didn't ever hear of her before since I was young. So heartbreaking. It's crazy how in her music she literally summed up her whole life without even knowing it was gonna go down that way. Now every time I listen to her it will be associated with nothing but sad thoughts. Such a shame.
its funny you say that. i had to perform this song for a gig with a singer, and we used this performance, as a base, and the singer just couldn't get the phrasing and timing of that part right. Only Amy could i think.
did the music world a justice, it's amazing how she effortlessly did that , I wonder if she a taking a bow from wherever she's at, the justice league of music
@Damon McGeachy As a die hard Amy fan, I strongly believe that Amy felt her music in words in every sense. However, after much consideration and viewing her live recorded performances; I strangely and perhaps wrongly believe that her somewhat intoxicated spirit due to alcohol created some of her most honest and beautiful performances. However, whenever she was visibly high from stronger substances it overtook her talent and overshadowed her performances as a whole. I am no stranger to alcohol or substance abuse and in no way romanticizing this behavior but believe this is a small part of her troubled brilliance. Long live Amy forever xoxo
"Back to Black" was inspired by her relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil. He had left Winehouse for an ex-girlfriend, leaving her going to "black," which to the listener may appear to refer to drinking and depression. However, the "black" to which she refers is more likely heroin, to which she was openly addicted; "black" is the second most common street name for heroin in Los Angeles
+juicer404 It was just drinking and depression. The black's just a metaphor. She didn't start the heroin until after her and Blake got back together. Hence why she looks so much better here, and sounds better. This was before the hard drugs. I'm way to familiar and obsessed with her story. Wouldn't it've been cool if she'd written about when it got worse...cool meaning deep; would've been darker. This music described a time period that no where near matched the black that was to come.
+Nicholas Pietrowski "u love blow, and i love puff, and life is like a pipe" i was more thinking her boyfriend preferring blow, "cocaine" and he prefering "puff", possibly smoking crack, giving reference to pipe all so, just cause she looks good here, doesnt mean she wasnt dabbling, was just better at hiding here maybe, or maybe before it got a grip on her properly
Puff is weed. She used to smoke a lot of marijuana and Blake didn't like it; he liked coke. After a while she asked to have some, which he said took him aback, and that was the first time she used anything hard, and we all know what happened from there. Like I said, I have scoured the Internet for Amy. These songs were written after their first affair.
Man. What would her life had been like if she just hadn't gotten involved with that guy? I know she was exposed to a lot of things and people that weren't necessarily the best, but I feel like he was really the one that directly caused her downward spiral. And here he is, living his life while she is dead. Her voice was so amazing and unique-incredible.
It's sad that during the last few months of her life she was so lonely that she wanted to talk to someone and people ringing at her house door with her opening and inviting them in and them saying "no, just an autograph.. Thanks" with someone filming from distance and laughing .Some people just don't have soul. Depression is a bad beast. She probably wasn't made for fame. Hope she found peace now. R. I. P. Amy.
She could have spoken to anyone. Famous or not. Her fans loved her. She had respect. She needed help and she knew it. But no one could tell her what to do. Maybe she just didn't know how to live.
@@MarkSmith-hf5nh Those fools did not love her. They only payed her any mind bc of her voice. it's disgusting the way the media and her so called "fans" treated her.
Only shallow people want autographs, so she met lots of them. A shame. I'd have been glad to bring a couple guitars, and hang out, and get to know her.
This song is for my dad . I’m 56 on May .And i remember at home with my walkman . I said to my dad listen please.. he loved this album.. rip my DADDY❤️🤩😉🤘🏻
This is the most raw, honest, and pure version of this song I've ever heard. No bullshit, no editing, no digital/studio adjustments to make everything "pop" and fit into a preset that appeals to whatever the fuck the definition of a pop album is, just the genuine message of unfiltered pain and emotion Amy was trying to communicate, before she left this world way too soon but at the time she did. Woman had a hell of a lot of talent and more troubles than anyone knew about, but hell if she didn't make an impact while she was here.
People value marketing over talent, happily lapping up the sh** they're selling us, all auto tuned, edited and over processed. I don't like feeling hustled when I listen to music. This is like walking out of a bar where people had been chainsmoking for 57 years and into fresh air. I love music that simultaneously breaks my heart and feeds it. 💔 💕
Totally agree, although I did think the version she did on bbc sessions was a great version too, I love this stripped back beautiful version. She was a true story teller.
This version is truly astonishing; I actually think it’s the best I’ve heard. Amy is obviously relaxed, performing before a small audience in a guitar store. Yet she performs the song with so much emotion. As I said, truly astonishing.
yes, this performance is musically flawless. awesome. talented. brilliant. incredible. amazing. show stopping. spectacular. never the same. totally unique. completely not ever been done before. unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, shit on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it.
Live versions of pretty much anyone are usually better. Not sure of your era, but I was in college in the early 70s & at that time you went to concerts specifically NOT to hear the studio version. Lipsyncing? Absolutely unheard-of, would have been considered a travesty. That seemed to change at some point. The last concert I went to was one Reader's Digest version of the record after another. I felt sick & left early.
The thing is... she never sang ANY song the same way twice. She's a true Jazz singer. She didn't plan out her riffs, she felt them out. So saying one version is "better" than another is kinda missing the point of what makes her so great. Singing riffs isn't that rare of a talent these days, but being able to improvise the same song countless ways is. Some would call it singing with soul, but even soul singers often plan out the notes they are going to sing. Being truly spontaneous is a vulnerable way to perform, but if its done successfully you'll connect to the listener's emotions in a much more profound way. I'm obsessed with her live performances, but I also wouldn't change a single note on her album. It's a work of art.
@@maximewijffels4391 I agree. That says a lot about her huge talent. Real talent is shown live, without filters/arrangements/sound effects from the studio
Same. I've been alive when some crazy and sad events have happened. But Amy, Amy is the one I cried for. I wonder what she would be doing today? Probably be the mother she always wanted to be.
***** I always thought she was attractive when she was healthy, even kinda cute at times. But then, i've never found tattoos or piercings to be very healthy-looking in the first place, or attractive. I dont think she would have had any trouble finding dates though, even with no voice, that's for sure.
Well, high or not she could sing amazingly well and was at least original in her style. Sadly, a pretty bimbo like Taylor Swift is supported and backed by the same idiot fans that dismissed Amy's natural talent.
I think she's absolutely gorgeous. Her amazing talent made her even more gorgeous in my eyes. She's different, not everyone likes different but I do. May she rest in peace.
My gracious was this woman talented. Every performance she immerses herself in the feeling of the song. That's why you never get the same version twice she sings her interpretation fresh every time.
Not just Paparazzi bad taste in men that idiot Blake was the stepping stone to her downward spiral and people like her Dad who should have intervened were more concerned with lining their pockets and keeping her away from the people who wanted to help her and hide her away from it and protecting her. Makes me so angry.
holy shit, is she ever on top of her game singing this song, it just blows me away how good she was. She had a fantastic voice with range, rhythm, cadenance and her own hip hop retro jazz sound. You can fell the emotion in every word her voice played like an instrument playing each syllable of every word in the song. A true artist one of the greatest musical talents to come along in the past 40 years. Who knows what she would have created if she was still alive and healthy. Great lyricist and song writer with a complex masterful understanding of sound and music.
DAMN SHE HAD A VOICE..There's no words to describe that amount of talent. Its so much sadder when musicians die in their prime. In another world we're all crying along to the songs she wrote that we never had a chance to hear in this world. The thought of that really makes me sad.
I do agree with that assessment. Only recently have I discovered that. The best originals that I've heard the past week were from artists in pain from a loss of some sort. Sad but true.
She was still just a girl at heart. The look on her face when she reacted to Tony Bennett reading her name when she won an award was priceless. He was her idol, and he totally dug her, too. She never thought in a million years that the admiration would be mutual.
She lives on through so many women who have adopted Amy's style. Once in a lifetime talent and such a tortured soul, I wish she was still here and I could talk to her.
This girl was just irreplaceable, one in a million. Such a talent gone forever. I remember media hounding her when she was at her lowest and adding to her pain and misery. Rest in peace Amy sweetheart 🌷💖
sucks I discovered her music long after she passed away, and the reason I did was because i was in rehab. If I would have had the opportunity back then to listen to her music I would have been a lot happier.
Love how effortless this is for her, not even any effect on her vocals absolutely raw as it could ever be This kiddies is how you sing, no bullshit no auto tune just pure talent, what a terrible loss for the music industry
Amy was phenomenal on so many levels, whether it was the rich quality of her voice, the way she improvised differently and flawlessly with nearly every performance, or her skills at writing those amazing songs she gave us. I loved how she took bluesy jazz, blended in some smooth soul from a long gone Era, and brought those old styles to our modern world. She started that trend that was picked up by Adele, John Newman, Mayer Hawthorne, Duffy, and so many others. I can only imagine what she would've done if she hadn't left us so soon...
Hauntingly pure. Her voice and sound lingers with me for along time and I never tire of hearing it. It doesn't grate on me or become repetitive, it's just like coming home to everything I enjoy about music. Bless ya Amy.
Imagine being one of her session musicians like that guitarist. What an honour it would be to be able to say you had the chance to make amazing music like this with one of fhe best voices in the world!

🙏 Amen!

Every time I see Amy perform, I just feel such sadness. The world lost a true, primal talent. Truly special.
some are sent to shine bright for a short time but leave us with lasting memorys and amy was one
Tragic loss. What on earth were her management doing to help her??!!!
Indeed. Look at her. She not even trying and this performance she does so effortless. She was so raw
I agree what a loss
Yes and please pray for her to pass some down to us
Today Amy would have turned 32. Gone too soon. RIP.

Shon9tilR Totally agree. :-(

I get this feeling that she never really wanted to be famous, she just wanted to sing. That's it.
It's not just a feeling. She always said that she is a Jazz singer and just wants to sing in little clubs. So sad what happened to her.
Favorite song ❤Here in 2024 RIP Amy
No one gives love to the guitar player... but I really love the way that dude plays. I know he's not exactly pulling off some complex stuff, but he compliments the piece nicely. What an honor it must be to play with a singer like that...
Real talk
Amy had nice words for him, there's some interview where she talks about him, the jazz scene....etc. etc.
I like this version more so than the original studio version. I give his playing half the credit of this awesome performance.
TheOunceler yes. He did a wonderful work ! And shines during the song!
He laid it down... Pure and simple.. beautifully... She added her heart and and emotion.. combined.. art.
This girl breaks my heart every single time I listen to her, but I can't stop listening to her. Such a tragic loss.
Да, вы правы!
In this song, she unknowingly foreshadowed her own death. RIP. Your talent still leaves my jaw on the floor.

+Nicholas Pietrowski
"u love blow, and i love puff, and life is like a pipe"
i was more thinking her boyfriend preferring blow, "cocaine" and he prefering "puff", possibly smoking crack, giving reference to pipe all so, just cause she looks good here, doesnt mean she wasnt dabbling, was just better at hiding here maybe, or maybe before it got a grip on her properly
+Jenna love No. It's a metaphor. (see Nicholas Pietrowski above) This song was written before she got into class A drugs.
What a great voice even with acoustic Guitar very powerful. Miss much Amy
I can’t listen to her sing, without a tear.

God needed his angel to sing back at home. Her and so many others. I think to show us what we can somewhat hear when we get there.
R. I. P. Amy.
Did that actually happen :(((
She could have spoken to anyone.

That voice was a gift from God. It saddens me that we lost this amazing woman to such a tragic end. Rest in peace Amy

Hữu Nguyễn Đức sir, you cannot study under her, she passed away several years ago :(
This version is better than the original... there's a better range of vocals
Hannah most of her acoustic or live versions are better than the commercial one
Just an incredible voice, so natural and unforced.

Does anyone else think she's kind of pretty when she's 'put together', like in this video? She didn't deserve all those 'hideous' and 'ugly' comments.
***** She had a very striking style, and not everyone is into that.
***** I think she is high as fuck in this vid, just saying...
Like Jimi Hendrix did.
I never seen this before. Makes tears fall out how did we lose her?
tyhe ppparzi? ????? You fuckewrs destoryed her.
Not just Paparazzi bad taste in men that idiot Blake was the stepping stone to her downward spiral and people like her Dad who should have intervened were more concerned with lining their pockets and keeping her away from the people who wanted to help her and hide her away from it and protecting her. Makes me so angry.
Her dad pushed her too hard and stuffed up her life for the cause of his dick
I will tell you in one word how the world lost such a beautiful human being : MONEY.

holy shit, is she ever on top of her game singing this song, it just blows me away how good she was.
