When my recon squad called for air support in Nam, F-4 Phantoms were sent out to us. They would make a strafing pass and hit their after burners as they flew up a mountain side toward us. The sound was primordial. It would vibrate your internal organs. If any NVA were still around they would be scared shitless just by the sheer nasty noise these things made.

Those planes without radar, without electronics, with free fall bombs attacked a British aircraft carrier in 1982. We must recognize that they are good. I do not want to imagine what an F22 can do
Used to sit in a sandbag bunker at the end of the Chu Lai airstrip in Vietnam, and watch the F4 "Smokers", in two plane elements, taking off directly over our heads with full bomb and missile loads outbound to targets. Talk about LOUD! Full afterburners and going for the brass ring. They would be just a few hundred feet overhead, and then zoom out of sight headed inland. Impressive sight.
Sweetest looking jet in the Air Force. I used to refuel the D and E models at Homestead AFB FL from 78 to 82 with the 31st POL Squadron. The sound of these ‘birds brings back a lot of sweet memories. PHANTOMS PHOREVER
Had the good fortune to spend four years flying the F4E in early seventies. It was the multi role fighter of its era, bomb truck, dive bomber, interceptor and dogfighter. It was the experience of my lifetime, hard to believe the subsequent fifty years have gone by so fast. Some mention the smoke, there is an interesting back story to this. The engines were tuned to run "rich" to keep the turbine inlet temperature down. This contributed to the remarkable reliability of the J79. It was possible to lean the mixture by installing modified burner cans that largely got rid of the smoke, but this led to significantly reduced tbo. It was a $$s thing, in the end most operators opted for the smoke
Same ATL Jim Graham at DAL? I got two F-4 rides, one as a cadet in the F-4E at Spangalem AB GE, the other at VX-9 Point Mugu in a QF-4N. Some of the best flying a T-38 FAIP could get! Now a 7ERA JFK. Best
What an legendary aircraft! That sound is awesome! Sure wish the commentators would stop their incessant yapping when aircraft are doing flybys though.
@@Paul33500 The MiG 21was certainly more maneuverable than the F4, but that doesn't necessarily make it a better aircraft. Properly flown, using "zoom and boom" tactics, the Phantom could dictate the terms of engagement. As long as the Phantom driver didn't make the mistake of getting into a turning fight with a MiG then he had a pretty good chance of shooting his adversary out of the sky. That said, the MiG 21, the MiG 17 and the MiG 19 were all formidable opponents and a Phantom driver underestimated these aircraft at his peril, but none were superior to the F4.
First model I ever put together. I had to have it, I saved some of my paper route money to buy the kit. Then when I joined the military I got to see them flying all the time. It was a bad boy. It could do it all. R I P. Phantom. One of the all time greats.
Living in Nevada as a kid, we'd sometimes see these flying overhead in the desert. The roar they caused was just awesome. I later met a pilot who had flown these. He described them as like driving a muscle car.
I still love the old phantom. The wings are all notched, bent up at the tips, anhedral at the elevators,...You could almost imagine the designers trying to manage the power the engines put out. Smoke trail,...The plane just thinks it's going to come up to height and kick your butt. It knows you see it coming. It likes that you see it coming
Our local Air National Guard flew phantoms well into the 1980’s. One of the pilots took us out to the runway threshold while several pairs took off. We were within 100’ of the phantoms and we had to plug our ears. I was ten at the time but i will never forget how those planes made the ground shake as the pilots stood on the brakes with full afterburner.
Used to watch the Air Nat Guard F4's at Mcguire in the late 80's. They would come back from their practice runs flying about 100' over the runway and blast straight up right over my head (they used to let you park at the end of the runway). It was so loud and it actually would make the car shake a little. The most awesome (and loud) display of power that I have ever seen. They should keep one or two as a tribute to one of the most awesome jets ever.

F-4 Phantom-- fastest way to turn JP4 into smoke and noise. A co-worker was a mechanic on a carrier during Vietnam. He said it was common for the Phantoms to return with vegetation hanging off various parts of the a/c. This was from flying into debris from exploding bombs dropped by a/c ahead of them on the bomb run. Flying that fast and close to the weeds you don't have time to think about what could go wrong, just fly the mission.

I just re-read _Phantom Over Vietnam_ by John Trotti and it was just as gripping the second time. One number he cites about this beast that stuck in my mind was 4.5 gallons of fuel consumption per minute _at idle just sitting on the ground_
@@zeeeman8744I've watched hundreds of F-4 catapult launches and it was almost standard practice to go to afterburner from just before the cat stroke until they had established a positive climb rate. The burner was on maybe 30 seconds for that.

Two ship F4's remind me of Summer Camps in the 80's at Gowen Field. When our Air Guard flew recon F4's and they'd greet us in the a.m. with two ship takeoffs and in the afternoon with their return. Loud and awesome were the F4's near Gowen, quiet and low when we'd see them buzzing us in the field. I miss 'em..
There will probably never be anything as sexy as the Fox-4 ! Best aircraft the Blue Angels ever flew in an air show was the "J" model. How does the overwhelming thunder of those afterburning engines get lost in the recording? Not criticizing, just wondering where all the bass goes? Is it the result of low gain settings on the microphone? Great upload! Thanks!
I'm from Springfield, IL. The 183 TFW is based here at Capital Airport. Runway 2240 is about 9,000 feet, because the Phantoms needed it. The wing transitioned to F-16A's many years ago, but planes were moved to Indiana because of a friendly fire incident in Afghanistan. I live 1/2 mile from 2240.

I remember at an air show I got underneath one trying to find jets ( I thought it was a Harrier😅). The Hero that actually flew it in harm's way after alot of laughing told me the history of it. What a versatile battle tested bird.
Did anybody else notice the pilot mishap during the takeoff? At 2:01 you can see the brake-parachute-hatch open up and the brake-chute flying away. At the pass while taking off at 2:20 you can see, that the hatch is still open :D
Why do they have to destroy the f4? Can't they just demilitarize them and sell them to a warbird foundation that will keep them flying for years to come?
The simple fact that Iran has the F4 and F14 are a major reason. That, and laws regarding the sale of military "defense articles", plus nuclear-capable aircraft. It took Congress to get the one that the Collings Foundation has flying chopping through a lot of red tape.
The f4 along with the f14 and 15 have to be one of my most favorite fighters of all time that is until the USAF brings out another fighter design that tops these three
I grew up under the southern flight path in and out of NAS Dallas. I remember watching or at least hearing these big, beautiful suckers go overhead almost every day. And if it wasn't a flight of F-4s, it was a flight of C-130s.
Only the US Military can take a 18 year old kid playing grab ass in the high school halls and in a few months train him and turn him into one of the finest propulsion mechanics on the J-79. Here it is 37 years later and not a day goes by that I don’t think about working the flight line launching F-4’s...The sounds, the smell, the sight of a Phantom rumbling down the runway on takeoff will always be with me...
My uncle flew these in the Viet Nam conflict. Mostly as ground support. His last assignment, was flying the “wild weasel” missions. Which I understand was to fly over known SAM sites, as fast as they would go, drawing missile fire. Then, the F14’s or F 16’s would come in, and blow them up.
Did anyone else notice that the F-4 on the far side (camo) lost it's brake chute at power up/brake release? Look close at 2:22, the chute door is open. Worked C's and D's at Kadena years ago.
Enjoyed my 33 months at Zweibrucken with the only recon outfit on the European continent. The 26th TRW and RF4E aircraft. Now those were some hot rods.......
Did anyone noticed the first F4 with green camouflage AF-349 lost its shute when put on afterburner at take off? you can clearly see the tail scoop open due to a faulty lock.

Why do they have to destroy the f4? Can't they just demilitarize them and sell them to a warbird foundation that will keep them flying for years to come?
Hopefully a couple F-4s that are in service in other countries can be preserved.
These were taken from the bone yard in DM. If they were not converted to Drones, they would be still be wrapped up there.
The simple fact that Iran has the F4 and F14 are a major reason. That, and laws regarding the sale of military "defense articles", plus nuclear-capable aircraft. It took Congress to get the one that the Collings Foundation has flying chopping through a lot of red tape.
+WAMQF4 are you one of the f4 pilots

Spangdahlem AFB Germany 3yrs. C/D and E's. Loved this plane
The f4 along with the f14 and 15 have to be one of my most favorite fighters of all time that is until the USAF brings out another fighter design that tops these three
It'll be a damn hard Job
for the Designers ,and i don't think that they will convince me ,but we'll see what the Future brings
@@f-4ephantomll271 I agree It will be a hard job but we gotta wait until the life span of the f35 is up which will most likely be in about 30 years
I grew up under the southern flight path in and out of NAS Dallas. I remember watching or at least hearing these big, beautiful suckers go overhead almost every day. And if it wasn't a flight of F-4s, it was a flight of C-130s.
Same here, out of Oak Cliff near Kimball High
Instant magique de voir ces deux avions en démonstration....Bien filmé..Very goog Like....
Richard Bramley there were no F-14’s or F-16’s in Vietnam. But kudos to your uncle, that’s a special kind of aviator !
The lead sled, but what a fighter. Memories of Col. Robin Olds,
Coolest jet fighter
Did anyone else notice that the F-4 on the far side (camo) lost it's brake chute at power up/brake release? Look close at 2:22, the chute door is open. Worked C's and D's at Kadena years ago.
If they brought back the F-4 for airshows, please bring back the F-14 Tomcat! Please!!!!
I worked on f4C, F4E, F4G, and lastly RF4C, Loved the plane. Even worked an F4E that went to Hill and came back a G.
How old are these two aircraft….? They look absolutely awesome….
Visker they are probably late 60,s, early 70’s
most likely early 70s, they got the TISEO camera and the agile eagle slats on the wings which were the hallmark of the late E model phantoms
That airplane just embodies testosterone!!
💪💪
Enjoyed my 33 months at Zweibrucken with the only recon outfit on the European continent. The 26th TRW and RF4E aircraft. Now those were some hot rods.......
RAMSTEIN AB, "76-78" 86TH Ground refueling(POL) F4E'S !! #MEMORIES🇺🇸✈✈✈✈
Ramstein AFB 1966-1970 Jet Eng Mechanic 38TRS 417Th Best Job Ever
Is there a reason why the f4 doesn’t have a rio in the back seat for occasions like this I mean maybe because the pilot doesn’t need one
PLEASE KEEP EM FLYIN!
Did one of them eject their chute as they applied power for takeoff?
If you use a little imagination, you can see Bien Hoa, Da Nang, Takli, Udorn, or any other base in Vietnam. Just a magnificent, legendary beast.
This...is...damned...AWESOME!
Awesome. Thanks 👍🇳🇿
Did anyone noticed the first F4 with green camouflage AF-349 lost its shute when put on afterburner at take off? you can clearly see the tail scoop open due to a faulty lock.
I don't know why it popped and cute didn't reply, but the drogue did come out.
